I reserved a Jeep with Avis from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. the following day. After taking the ferry, I called Avis to request a pickup for my wife and me. They told me they could only transport one person, so I took a taxi to the rental location instead.
When I arrived, I witnessed one of the check-in agents yelling at another customer because he did not have roadside assistance through Avis. The man explained that he had coverage through his own insurance company. The agent insisted his insurance would not work there. He called his insurance company on the spot, and they confirmed it would. The agent became so upset that she threw his rental agreement at him and walked out the door.
I then approached the other check-in agent. I was the intended driver, but my wife wanted to use her credit card. The agent said that because it was my wife's card, she had to be the one driving. I offered my own credit card instead. The agent still insisted that my wife would be the driver. My wife had to step in and clearly state that she was not driving and that the agent needed to take my card. Only then did she accept it.
The agent then noted that I had reserved the Jeep from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. the next day and told me I could not do that. When I pointed out that the website had allowed the reservation, she simply replied that she didn't know why, but it wasn't permitted. I offered to pay extra, but she refused. I explained that the ferry left at 3 p.m. and that I only wanted a few hours to drive around beforehand. Her only offer was to drop us off at the ferry at 10 a.m. I agreed to return the vehicle at 10 a.m. instead.
The Jeep itself had extensive damage, the check-engine light was on, and the key barely worked. It took nearly five minutes to start the vehicle every single time.
When I returned the Jeep, the agent said they would take me to the ferry. I told her I already had other arrangements. She claimed that was not what we had discussed the day before. I had no interest in waiting five hours at the ferry terminal, so I left.
This was the only negative experience during an otherwise enjoyable week in Puerto Rico. read more
