Go for a whopper walk up along the river, go over to the obelisk and imagine what it would have been like to have been hanging out with the Connolys and Johnathan Swifts and the likes, get a bitta wind in your hair, then get yourself over into the Courtyard Cafe in the grounds of the wonderful Castletown House, and get the warmth back in you. Get a nice sambo or hot meal and a lovingly made hot chocolate and cake to finish. You'll walk home with a spring in your step, guaranteed.

They have breakfast, deserts and drinks. We had photo error but actually had pasta and a superfood salad. The pasta was flavorful and used Spanish style chorizo. The superfood salad had yams, hummus, quinoa, various greens and I added chicken. It was bright and flavorful. The soup was a wonderful standout as was the treacle bread that came with it. It felt like home. The desert was a carrot cake with blueberries which was also remarkably light and the blueberry was a surprisingly beautiful addition. We can easily see why this place was a five! I popped in for breakfast with friends just before Christmas. Had a lovely poached egg with sausages (yummo - they source them from nearby Celbridge). The baked goods all looked gorgeous, and my son devoured his pastry without letting me try a bite! Staff was friendly and efficient, the prices were great, but mostly I'd recommend the Victorian Tea Rooms for the cosy atmosphere. Plus, the shopping at the Straffan Courtyard is not to be missed!

I'd initially been a little intimidated by it, having had one of my lecturers refer to the unit as a "hipster mecca" in Maynooth, but far from it. There are funny blackboard drawings outside the shop, changed daily. Let the quirky cartoons lure you in and you'll be greeted with a chirpy hello & a smile by one of the lads behind the counter. It's my ultimate cheer-up place in the town. Just the right size (Goldilocks would be delighted with this joint) as you can sit & do your thing in peace, or chat away to the other customers (there are a lot of regulars). However, at busy times there might not be much (or anything) in the way of seating, but fear not young caffeine addict - they do coffee to take away. My drug of choice is their mocha. The mochas and hot chocolates are made with chocolate buttons, which is just super luxurious & is a real treat. Sometimes I've gotten spare hot chocolate in a dainty little espresso cup at the side of my mocha. Chocolate on the side of chocolate? This is why I come back. They also serve a small range of sandwiches, which are great for when all the coffee you've consumed starts to burn a hole in your stomach. The croque monsieur will change your life, without getting too overdramatic about it. They've got different roasts of beans on offer, sourced locally and changed frequently. If, like me, you've got a limited knowledge of these things (but like to pretend otherwise), just ask which they'd recommend and you'll be happy out.
