Great people-watching, both within and outside the many large windows. Comfy, homey furnishings and an airy large space. Food: EXCELLENT. Local, sustainable, healthy, creative, and DELICIOUS. We had the Banh mi on fresh baked bread that was to die for -- perfectly spiced, with each bite savory, sweet, crunchy, fresh, rich. The coffee was terrific, too! And there were so, so many astonishing fresh-baked things available... serious temptation for the two diabetics on holiday! Service: Our server really went out of her way to make certain we were comfortable and well taken care of. She was bright, friendly, communicative, and quite helpful to two strangers who'd just arrived in Ireland! Value: Remarkably low price for such high-quality food! Wait time: None. A lovely place with a great concept. Local produce and products sold in the shop and a small but varying menu in the cafe. We went here for a late lunch and I am afraid was quite disappointed. They had run out of most things when we arrived. How a cafe runs out of half the fishes in a 5-6 fish menu is beyond me, in any case, I chose one of the dishes they did have. It arrived luke warm and lacked any flavor. A chili lentil dish that was neither hot or spicy and lacked seasoning. I wanted a piece of carrot cake and by the time I got around to ordering they had run out of that too. The flourless chocolate cake was nice and I liked the taste but too dense for my liking. Coffee was way to sour for my liking and I left half of it behind. Maybe it was an off day but this place is not cheap and I expected more. The shop itself is lovely and they have some nice things but overpriced in my opinion. Staff were nice and friendly and the ambience made up for some of the disappointment. Stopped in with grand plans to get an arancini plate and a glass of wine to kill time until dinner - I ended up not loving the arancini special of the day - but think that I was happier with my pivot than I would have been with arancini. I ended up getting the sourdough toast w ricotta and honey - in my mind this was going to be one lame slice of [probably still pretty good] sourdough with toppings. NOPE. You get two giant slices of bomb sourdough and then a full vat of whipped ricotta with honey. Exceeded expectations. I'm curious as to what inspired this premier and unique looking coffee shop! Upon entering this place, you wouldn't think they serve food or drinks. The decor all over the place make it seem like you're at an art exhibit combined with a local farmer's market and your own living room. Nothing matches, but everything about it looks comforting. As for their coffee, I ordered an expresso by accident, but the guy working there was cool enough to convert it into a cappuccino. And supposedly, they use a double shot in every coffee cup so you can really smell the flavor and savor the taste. I really enjoyed my cappuccino! That's another great thing about this place. You can see them create your coffee. It's like art! The kitchen area is also open, so you can see them prepare your sandwiches or plate. I'm a huge a fan of this hipster cafe. I thought it would be super pretentious, but the staff was really friendly and it has a cool vibe. It was quite busy mid-morning on a Friday. As everyone knows I'm a HUGE foodie and my philosophy of finding good places to eat also applies when I travel. Sure I can have what's considered the traditional dishes of the region, but this and finding places where the locals *truly* eat can be at very different places. The Fumbally, with its communal tables, daily specials that span the globe in terms of dishes and its use of local and/or organic ingredients in its dishes screams out "hipster" and this sort of dining may not appeal to everyone (The No1DP would outright refuse to eat with me if asked). However I appreciate this approach to food and in this type of dining environment the people you'll find eating here are also people who have the same mindset aka the local foodies. The locals surely won't be eating their Irish breakfast or fish and chips every day, and despite Rick Steves' travel philosophy, you sure won't find this restaurant in any of his guidebooks. However I think I was the only non-local in this restaurant and a communal space is a great way to get people to talk. The even more hipster thing I did was to eat here during their weekly Wednesday dinner, which features a set menu based on a theme. For my week it was "Irish Summer", which boasted the seasonal vegetables from organic suppliers. Everyone orders from the same menu - only options are which courses to eat. I did a drink + main + dessert (and additional wine) for €34, a reasonable price (per locals) for a high-quality 2-course menu with drinks. This may be pricey for a night out for American tourist standards, but I got quite the experience that compete with any craic I can find at one of the Temple Bar pubs. DRINK: Sherry fino, Elmhurst apple + ginger bug (€7). I couldn't taste much of the sherry but I can taste the ginger and the faint taste of apple. It's a well-mixed cocktail that I can see being sipped by the poolside. The amuse bouche had a chili jam which perked up the appetite. MAIN: St Tola goats cheese, McNallys organic kale + Dunany spelt berry risotto with roasted McNallys summer squash with Fumbally cured Tamword lardo toast (€15). This isn't your typical risotto. It is a little chewier and the texture is similar to lentils. Turns out that it has a higher protein/fiber content than rice so I actually felt more full than just eating a veggie risotto with rice. The goat cheese worked here to make it more creamy, as did the squash. Kale added some crunchy topping. I chose the lardo over bruschetta as lard in this form is hardly served in the US. It's like a cold version of bacon and replacing the meat with the fat. Texture was a little meaty and it was hard to bite into it to fully separate the meat. Would work better being spreadable like leverpostej. DESSERT: chocolate mouse, earl grey crumb + organic Wicklow blueberries (€6). I am not a mousse person and this was some damn good mousse as it was more airy and less pudding-like. The bread crumb and blueberries certainly helped. I had a great time here eating great food with 2 couples, one younger and one older. They were very friendly Dubliners who were impressed that I could find a place like this. The way I found this is to use a combination of scouring through the blogs as well as a respectable local restaurant rating guide - in the case of Ireland, the McKennas' guides. If you can't afford or don't want to do Michelin-starred dining this is your next bet for good food in a region as there is no longer a Europe equivalent of Yelp. After eating here not only do I recommend eating here as a solid option, it's also a good opportunity to experience Dublin through the eyes of local foodies. read more

Nice servers, but an orange juice I ordered -- with our coffees (which can in 5 minutes) -- never came, even though I asked 3 different servers about it. And I got a cup of filter coffee, but no cream or milk. After I asked twice I finally got up and went in search of it myself. I would go back for the food and ambiance, but only with an expectation that it will take me an hour and a half to get stuff (or not!) that should take 45 minutes. Ah well... read more

Fare: Fresh, organic food, killer breakfast wraps, eggs, and lunch salads, great coffee and a range of calories and sweets to salve that sugar rush. Decor: Created with studied random abandon that's a right-down, weirdy beardy, bike-riding hipster attractor. Just what is needed in the Liberties, this joint is going to be very popular with the fashionable set, nearby office crowd, tourists, and locals, alike. In better times they'd search you at the door for an Apple Mac Book Air, and give you one it you were without, just so you fit in better. Now, BYOD and use the free wi-fi. Attire: Tuxedo top, jeans, Shoes with no socks. Think Monocle magazine and Tyler Brûlé. Unfortunately, there is a an element of attitude that doesn't suit everyone. Staff attitude: Barrista attitude was way "too cool for school" for my liking. I wondered what I had said to offend him. YMMV. Opens 8 AM -5 PM weekdays (generally). Comedy mornings and other events are held there too, and there can be special evening events and dinners, so watch out for noticies. This has to be balanced by the fact the place is closed when you least expect it, such as Patrick's weekend or other bank holidays. It seems unfair to the local community, tourists, and others who venture into the area at these times, who really deserve a better deal. read more

Big, airy space, comfy seating, options to sit on your own or at communal tables, nice art on the walls, posters of community goings on, and general stuff to look at, as well as prime people watching. Then there's the food. It's really, really good. It's healthy, home made, colourful and good. My favourite thing is actually the simplest - avocado on rustic toast with fresh chilli, tomato & olive oil. So tasty. Really, really tasty. They have wifi too so it's a nice place to work from. I have been wanting to come here for so long, and what can I say, except that it was worth the wait! This place is known as a hipster haven, so in case you think that doesn't appeal to you, can I add "in the best sense of the word." Charming decor, shared tables (whatever happened to a sense of community, amiright?), fresh food, friendly service and a great assortment of options for every palate, including for those with intolerances, allergies, a matter of personal conscience or what not. What's not to love? I opted for a chai latte, this was the good stuff, spiced to perfection and overall "just right". For food, I went with the toast with scrambled eggs, mixed with cheese and garlic, but just subtle enough not to be overbearing. My friend opted for a salad meal with an addition of falafel balls. The falafels were a highlight, rivalling even the middle Eastern restaurants about town. The accompanying hummus did not disappoint either, it was top notch stuff. We topped it off with a slice of gluten free chocolate cake which was also quite heavenly. This place doesn't need much more than to tell you how good the food is. Let it be known though that the ambience doesn't disappoint. This place is worth all the hype and then some. read more

I love the Fumbally so much. I went to the Fumbally every single day during my visit in January. Everyone at the Fumbally was so so nice, and lovely Ger always brought over my lattes which were so very good. I kept count of how many I had during the trip. A thousand, that's how many. My second time coming to The Fumbally after hearing about it from a Japanese friend, I'm not disappointed! Came on a saturday both times and the place is jam packed with not a seat to spare, so most likely you will have to share a table. But the atmosphere is buzzing and the cafe itself is really bright, with wooden tables and rustic style decor. It's got kind of a hippy feel to it. The only thing that annoyed me was trying to find a seat at all, so had to wait a while until someone left. The food is mostly healthy stuff; their salad plates are vegetarian (similar to what you would find in other vegetarian restaurants such as Cornucopia), but they also do meat like pulled pork, steak etc. The soups are really nice and the servings are pretty generous too. I like their daily salads which cost 9 euro for a plate, and you add falafel for 1.50 euro, or a soup for 2.50. I haven't tried it, but I saw Korean kimchi and Korean stir-fry on the special boards which sound pretty interesting (and really spicy). Overall, the staff are quite friendly, the service is fast, the food is good and prices range from about 8-15 euro for main. A great place for brunch/ lunch! My one star deduction is for being super crowded and noisy, but you can get a takeout. read more

Scrambled, on toast with tomato and cheese. Incredibly simple, but incredibly satisfying. We would always make sure to eat slowly to make them last. After eating heavy (albeit delicious) foods throughout our entire vacation, the Fumbally was like finding water in a desert! The Fumbally is incredible. They have a huge high ceiling airy space that is a really well decorated. The kitchen is open to view the staff was super friendly. There is plenty of seating for either a quick or a longer more relaxed stay. I only had the privilege of visiting once but I was absolutely blown away by the eggs they serve. They come with this incredibly rich cheese and garlic mixed in and some extremely rare non-plastic tomatoes to top it. First impression: we had been waiting in line for about 4 minutes, where the cashier was having small talk with another guest who already ordered/paid. Instead of acknowledging us to say "be right with you" or anything..he kept talking. So I thought that was a bit..well, not hospitable. Then another waiter saw us standing around awkwardly so he gave us 2 menus to look at. Food: as a vegetarian, the overnight oats porridge was AMAZING!!! Oh my gosh, so good. I would go back there just for that. The eggs looked good, but I don't eat eggs. However, my mom did ask them if they could make egg whites...to which they said no. I am not sure why..? They said it's because they are too busy but, we were the only people in line. My mom offered to break open the eggs for them (ha ha :*)) just as a joke but also kind of serious..but they said no, they're too busy for egg whites only. Hmmm? So that part kind of turned me off from the place, as this was the only place in Dublin that we had been to, that said no to making egg whites. So if you want an egg white only meal, look elsewhere. Other than that, the porridge is amaze balls and I would do that. The avocado toast was good - my mom did like that as well. So pretty sure I had coffee at Hipster Central.. Visited The Fumbally located on Fumbally Lane (funnily enough) Dublin 8. You can check their food menu online but was only really interested in a quick coffee and pastry. Really good choice, their rasbperry cheesecake looked so good! I found it hard to choose but ended up choosing a pear popover (Another US import) and fiancé chose a really healthy flapjack... They give you a wooden block with a letter on it (like a toy you had as a child? and deliver your coffee to the table when it's ready. Yes that is a lost balloon in one of the photos :( You can also buy coffee here. Today wechose 3FE Ethiopia Kebel Kercha Guji. High ceilings, a complete mismatch of seats and the plates wouldn't look out of place in my nanna's cupboard. The cups on the otherhand are a total modern grey and tie in far better with the building. So yes it is full of hipsters but families were there too. They've a great contrast of old and new and that makes me think we'll be making the trip back there again. If for nothing else than to pick up more coffee beans to bring home! read more

I will not lie, I loved this place. I felt like if I was transported in one of those places I love in Berlin during my whole lunch and that was great. I love the ambiance of the place and for once, a cafe I like in Dublin is not tiny, even tho it was pretty crowded we found some place. The food we had was good, mine was delicious, and the all irish my boyfriend had was pretty good too, even if it was actually pretty small and he was still hungry after eating it, which I totally understand because yes, it was tiny. So here is the reason why I removed one star, I don't mind paying a little bit more to be in a nice place I like, but at least, I'd like to have my belly full while leaving the place. What I'm trying to say is that in my opinion, this place is a bit too expensive for what it serves.
