Please be aware this review is for the nail service only and not any other service from the salon. I'd give this experience one star but since the nail tech was nice and friendly, as was the receptionist, I bumped it up to two. I came in for a gel extension service. Mind you, I've had my nails done plenty of times in the past but I haven't gotten them done within the past few years because it's expensive. The service seemed fine and pretty much went like all the other gel services I've had until it came time to set my nails in the UV lamp box. And then it burned. It burned my nail beds real bad. No marks were left or anything but the heat was so intense that it just was extremely painful each time I put my fingers in there. The nail tech said that sometimes people can be sensitive to the UV lamp but I've never felt it burn like that. Has something changed with gel setting in the past few years that I'm not aware of? After my nails were done and I left the salon, I could I realized I could see through my nails. Like there weren't enough coats of polish or the polish was really watered down. You could see straight through them and the brushstrokes on my nailbed were highly visible. Also, Not even a week and a half into having these nails and the extensions have started lifting up by the cuticle area. Every other time I've had gel nails, they've lasted at least four weeks and they have never lifted like that. A very shoddy, cheap job for a $55 service. Overall, highly disappointed as this is the worst nail job I've ever had done. I definitely will not be going back. read more

I am seriously extremely disappointed in the nail service I received here. The nail technician clearly didn't know what she was doing and she had to be like 17 years old ( only say this because I seriously question if she has her nail technician license ). My mani/pedi didn't even last four days and she didn't even bother to take off all my nail polish before beginning! If there was a quarter of a star option, that's what I would have chosen. For $85, this mani/pedi could have looked better if a 10 year old did it. I can't even explain how pissed I am for wasting my money here! The only plus side was the free ice cream. Except maybe that was just because they know this girl sucked at her job. Ps, don't go here!! Ask for Anya. She's young, hip, honest and so very nice! I've been to a few other stylists there and haven't been as pleased as I have been with Anya's touch. She seems to know exactly what look I want. Not being in the field (of hair design), I never know just what words to use to describe my desired cut. With Anya, I show her a couple of pictures, tell her about myself, and she gets it. I think the older stylists are used to more conservative clients and are a little afraid of the edge. It probably doesn't help that I go on my lunch break, wearing more conservative, work clothes. I guess I always hope that if I explain how I play at night, the image will be understood. I hate to admit when looking for a salon to get my hair done the day of my wedding I was looking first for convenience. This salon was directly across the street from my church. I was fortunate that I picked a great location that met my hair needs. Staff was friendly and welcoming. They match me with a stylist that was familiar with both my hair type and up-do wanted. We had a practice session before the wedding where my suggestions were taken into consideration for the big day. The day of my wedding I along with four bridesmaids got our hair done here. Eveyone's hair looked amazing and held up through the long wedding day. The atmostphere of this salon was fun and relaxing, exactly what you want on your wedding day. The entire time I lived in Columbus, I went to Anne at Avola Lanza (I was lucky to have Inna and some other amazing stylists a few times when I couldn't get in to see Anne). I love everyone there! They even did my hair for my wedding! My mother still goes there. She drives back to Columbus from Cleveland just for Anne! If I had more time off, I would drive back too and I try to schedule an appt when I am in town. If I could, I would give more than 5 stars. ON MALPRACTICE IN THE SALON INDUSTRY: Offering a client a free haircut after royally screwing theirs up is like giving a doggie bag to the victim of food poisoning. ABSTRACT A haircut a Avola Lanza goes horribly awry when Cyndi Robinson takes a patch on the back of my head down to the bare skin in a place that can't even be covered by a hat. INTRODUCTION This is a tale of a brutally botched job with clippers that will leave any of your remaining hairs standing on end. But first, some lazy back story...at the turn of the millennium I lived in Grandview and had my hair cut regularly at Avola Lanza by Glen. (Who is awesome and I understand is now at Polaris.) I then moved to Chicago, but often come back to visit and so, needing a haircut and passing through the neighborhood today, I dropped in to get things cleaned up: clippers on the side long enough to hide the scalp and texture up top for versatility. Fatefully enough, owner/stylist Cyndi Robinson was available and set to work. MATERIALS AND METHODS The following materials were used: -Professional-grade clippers and occasionally guards -Professional-grade scissors -Assorted standard salon/barber equipment -Cyndi Robinson, owner/stylist of Avola Lanza The method used is as follows: Roughly 1/3 of the way through the haircut Cyndi committed a visually and audibly noticeable foul up with the clippers at the bottom of my neck, right side. Unable to see what happened I was a little worried, but since Cyndi didn't say anything and I had good experiences there before I decided it couldn't be bad and to wait it out and see how she handled things. Cyndi set into motion a coverup of Watergate proportions as she aggressively trimmed, combed, faded and blended for the length of time a full haircut should take. We then went back for a wash and upon returning she broke the hard news that she had taken the clippers to my neck SANS GARDE (french for without the guard on) and shaved a substantial patch down to the skin at the bottom of my neck, right side. RESULTS The bare section at the bottom of my hairline was the full width of the clipper head and over an inch deep from the edge of my neckline up into the back of my head. (mind you, I specified I did not want the scalp to show on the original haircut.) She did her best to make it look normal, but as you can see from the pale section of my neck (see photo), she moved my hairline substantially up the back of my neck so it both looks ridiculous AND still shows the mark. The best complements she could make on her own work were, "it doesn't look too bad", "the part on top looks great, don't you think?" and "that turned out better than I though it would". I wouldn't be so kind, and prefer something like: "it looks like they just shaved me down for electro-shock therapy." or "My kids attacked me in my sleep and stuck gum in my hair." or "Slingblade!" DISCUSION At this point, I would have asked for a crew cut as this would have been the only way to possibly cover this up, but I did not have faith in Cyndi to be able to give such a style. (I was uncertain if she had ever cut men's hair, frankly, as I have received better haircuts at cheap barber shops and by my own hand on numerous occasions.) The haircut I received recently at Avola Lanza was undoubtedly the worst haircut I have ever received. Moreover, the way Cyndi tried so hard to cover up her serious mistake before deciding, after significant delay, she had to admit her error gives me serious pause with respect to her professionalism and integrity, particularly with regard to her judgement that she would be able to somehow blend it in without me noticing. In sum, Cyndi poorly estimated the gravity of her mistake and her ability to rectify it. If she were a surgeon, someone would have died on the table due to her distraction and incompetence. Fortunately, I just wound up with a really bad haircut. Either way, it's professional malpractice. read more

I have never been one to leave anything but positive reviews, as I don't want to hurt any business, however, this experience was so terrible that it needs to be discussed. I came in Saturday June the 30th as a walk-in to get a gel polish removal and change. I was told they had time for me, and so, as the girl was removing my gel, it took longer than normal, but instead of allowing it to soak long enough for it to start coming off, she hastily began to scrape it off. Then, as she was painting the gel, she was doing it so quickly and sloppily that you could see the streak marks, and see through to my nail underneath. She failed to paint the sides of my nails near the skin, and the nails has been filed in such a way that they were completely jagged edges. I knew she had an appointment after me, so I didn't say anything. Then, she accidentally used a base coat instead of a top coat, and instead of just fixing those few nails, she just put the topcoat on over it, resulting in my nails not drying. As anyone who has had or worked with gel polish knows, it shouldn't be wet or sticky when you leave. But mine was, for about 45 minutes after. It stuck to literally everything I touched and so I called to see if my nails could be redone. I was scheduled for that next Monday. On Monday I came in and met with the same girl. Again, she struggled to get my gel polish off, and scraped to get it off, but still couldn't get some of it off, so she buffed my nails until it came off, but unfortunately, buffed out my actual nail as well, until they got to the point where they were paper thin. She wanted to continue, but I told her to please stop and instead just put a nail strengthener and regular polish on, as my nails had been ruined. They had been buffed and filed down so low that they bent just by being touched, which was truly frustrating as I've always had very strong, thick nails. They also were all filed in different shapes and so truly, my nails looked like a disaster. At this point, I was too frustrated to say anything, as I didn't really think saying anything would help my situation since everything had already gone so wrong. The only reason I'm giving two stars instead of the deserved zero is because of how kind the nail tech, as well as the reception staff were. The experience, however, can be counted as the worst manicure I've ever had, and truly I wish I had never walked in. read more

I'm so happy I happened to find this place! I started coming here at the beginning of the year because it's right down the street & around the corner from my work. Allison is really fantastic and I always leave looking great! I think she has a great instinct for what kind of style will look best on you - I've been really happy every time I've walked out! I'll echo what some other reviewers have said - I'm much, much happier with my results here at Avola Lanza versus other salons where I have paid a lot more $$. In fact, that's why I started coming here in the first place because I was tired of spending over $200 for each salon visit and just feeling "meh" about my hair afterwards, so I was in the market for somewhere NEW. When you're spending that kind of money on your hair, you should be totally psyched about how you look, not just "meh" - and now I finally have that feeling.... without getting my mouth torn out at the register :) They also have a great assortment of products - I really like everything I have tried (everything smells so good - my hair smells great after leaving the salon, haha!), and it's all surprisingly reasonably priced, so I can actually buy what I want :) So unless something really drastic ever changes over there, they've definitely got a returning customer in me - I'll never go anywhere else for hair stuff! Two days before my wedding I trusted this salon based on the reviews to provide eyebrow waxing. Well, the esthetician was uncertain throughout the entire appointment. It took approximately 30 minutes for her to wax my brows as she repreatedly applied the wax to the same spot. Then she asked if I wanted the top of my brows waxed. Clearly for my wedding I wanted even, contoured brows so while I thought the question strange I calmly said yes. I have been to multiple salons and have never had an issue getting my brows waxed. My brow line is well-defined from previous waxing. Nevertheless, the esthetician left the top of my brow uneven and I had to retrim my brows myself. But this was the least of my issues, a few hours after my appointment I noticed some mild redness and discomfort along my lower brow line in the areas where she reapplied the wax several times. I placed a cold compress on my brows and chalked it up to just irritation from waxing. Boy was I wrong, the next day (also known as the day before my wedding) I had dark red, inflamed burns all along my lower brow line on each eye. These were burns from reapplied wax. Essentially, she waxed away a layer of skin. I was mortified. I asked for a refund which was promptly provided (either this wasn't the first time a refund was requested for waxing or the person behind the desk clearly saw the burn marks below my brows) but the upsetting experience and burned eyebrows were the two last things I needed one day before my wedding. I was disappointed, sad, angry and really frustrated that the esthetician was so oblivious to the notion that my skin would burn after multiple applications of wax. Thank goodness I had an excellent makeup artist who hid my horrendous burn marks. Unfortunately, this salon failed to provide a proper relatively simple service of brow waxing which resulted in a very negative experience for me. read more
