Here's a cautionary tale about Avon Dental Group in Avon, CT. I've been going there since I was a…read morekid, and never encountered any issues. Recently I needed to undergo a crown procedure. The day before I called into the office and was quoted ~$600 for the procedure. I have Delta Dental Insurance provided through CIGNA, which Avon Dental accepts. After the temporary crown was installed, the front desk refused to submit the bill to my insurance, and asked for up-front payment of upwards of $900 instead. I asked them why the number was so different from the price quoted the day before, and the nasty front desk administrator informed me that the person who helped me was mistaken and did not know what they were doing. I was told that since a permanent crown requires them to spend money I would have to pay in advance. I told them I did not have that type of money on me, and paid them $700, which they seemed more than happy to accept. After the final crown was installed a few weeks later, I met with the Billing Manager (someone different than the nasty front desk admin). She explained that they have contracted rates with the insurance companies, which is why they knew the exact price I would have to pay, and again quoted me this $900+change figure that needed to be paid up front. I refused to pay her the additional money at that time and said I would pay what I owed after the bill was submitted to my insurance. A few weeks later, I received my Explanation of Benefits from my insurance, and the price I was due to pay (after insurance) was as I had been originally quoted the day before the procedure: $613. I had been forced to overpay initially. And if they would have had their way, instead of owing me $87 back, it would have been over $300. I angrily contacted the Billing Manager and demanded to know what was really going on here, and how they not only could demand up-front payment w/o submittal to my verified insurance, but also how they could get the amount wrong by over 30%. TWICE. The Billing Manager ADMITTED that when the company was acquired a few years ago, they had over half a million dollars in debt on the books due to unpaid customer bills. To fix this problem, going forward they would charge customers upfront estimates and submit to insurance after that. And that it was the job of front desk workers to collect as much as they could upfront. And that they were good at their job. Yep. You heard that right. That they were good at their job, of intentionally overcharging customers initially before submitting to their accepted insurance companies! I told her I would no longer be a customer or patient of their office, and am awaiting my reimbursement via check, which I was told will be received in 2-3 weeks. This is how Avon Dental Group operates now. It is not the same place it was, and unless you want an experience like mine, I would not suggest you go to them for your dental needs!

I thought I had found a great new dental place. All was great for my first basic visit. My second…read morewas JUST a teeth cleaning. That's it. They sent a dentist in at the end, I asked what this was about, technician says "Oh we always have a dentist come in" but they did not ask my specific permission. He literally poked his fingers around in my mouth for 30 seconds or so. And when I get the bill, they socked me for $56 for this poking. NEVER AUTHORIZED THIS DENTIST PART, NEVER AUTHORIZED AN ADDITIONAL $56!!! If you can't trust them for a simple cleaning, I sure as hell will never trust them with more. And now they have lost a patient. NOT HAPPY WITH THEM AT ALL.

From the day it was put in, until the day it fell out on its own, it caused pain, gum swelling and intermittent migraines. I returned to Dr Sanford for 4 additional visits with the same concerns and reported pain. On the 4th visit Dr. Sanford was visibly angry and very aggressive in his approach in examining the crown and overall area in question. He was also insistent the crown work had been completed 5 years prior and vehemently disagreed with my statement of 4 months until he found the date in my medical records. After 4 visits with no visible progress made, and now having a frustrated doctor taking it out on me, I choose another dental group to reinstall a proper fitting crown. It, along with several other crowns that I have had for many years are working great! Between Dr. Sanford's inability or interest to make the appropriate corrections and his highly unprofessional behavior, I requested a return of payment. He wrote a letter placing responsibility on me, the patient, for the dental issues. He refused to reimburse but instead advised me to come in again to see what could be done. Candidly, when I have an issue with my car, I do not give the mechanics 4 chances to get it right. Why would I have a lower standard for my own personal dental health? The service provided was sub-par at best. At the very least, a refund should be made. Simply a dreadful experience!

Luckily a technician caught it when I was sitting in the chair about to get anesthesia. I could have aspirated during anesthesia and choked. Also problems with the billing person, Mae. She wasn't responding to the insurance company request for additional information to process the claim. Also, the doctor wrote in my chart that I had 52 minutes of anesthesia when I didn't! They billed insurance for it. Even though they made me pay for it up front. When I told Mae I didn't have anesthesia she didn't believe me and wasn't going to give me the refund I was told I would get since I didn't have it. All around a very negative experience.

Today, I can answer that question with "this morning". I had two chompers that my regular dentist said would be problematic for him to yank, so he referred me to the Big Boys at Avon Oral, Facial and Dental Implant Surgery. They treated me very well. I had originally made an appointment to have this done in March 2020, but that nasty Coronavirus cancelled that appointment for me. I needed a consult first, and that took place about a month ago. That's when I met the extraordinary Doctor Daniel Gill, he looked at my X-rays, offered me three different anesthesia options, explained the whole upcoming process, and made me feel like I had a real voice in what we were going to do. He has terrific communication skills. Today's procedure again showcased Dr. Gill's customer service and medical skill. He explained every little thing he was doing as if he was a play-by-play announcer - "you'll feel a little pinch, feel some pressure, hear some crunching", etc. He was assisted by two helpers -Erica and someone whose name escapes me. They were both fabulous. When the deed was done, I can honestly say it wasn't bad at all. So, my experience in the dentist chair was excellent. I left with a comprehensive list of follow-up care instructions, two packs of gauze, and an Rx for pain management. Thank you, Dr. Gill and team -you were great.
