I never had any real issues until my 6th year, which turned into a disaster, which is why the 1 star. I dropped off two plates (one to be engraved and one from the previous year as a font example) and was told it'd be done the same time the next day. I returned the next day with two more plates (again, one to be engraved and one as an example = 4 total plates) and asked if the first one was done. It wasn't, but I was ok with that since I just dropped off another. A week or so passed, and I decided to call to see if I could get an estimate on when it would be done. I wasn't in a hurry, but just wanted to know for my own information when I could expect it. I was told by the gentleman that he was a little busy and that he'd look into it and call me back. No call back. I called the next day, received the same answer with the same result. Finally I decided to go into the shop hoping that it would add a little pressure. The owner, an older guy, who mind you, is very friendly, told me about how busy he was and that he didn't know where my stuff was, that it was lost somewhere in the store but that he'd look for it and call me. Of course I never got a call. The weekend passes, I go in again. I receive the same song and dance and am told, once again, that he'd call. No calls. Finally, fed up I go in with resolve to get this thing figured out. He doesn't know where my stuff is still, so I say, hey, how about this, you give me a couple of blank plates, you redo my last year's one (because I obviously had already paid for it) and we'll go our separate ways. He says, ok, but since he's going to redo my old ones, he might as well do all of them. I am good with that. He tells me they'll be done by 4pm the same day (it's like 11am). I ask if I should call ahead to make sure they're done and he exclaims, if that makes you feel better about it, but that they'll for sure be done. I know better. So at 3:45pm I call. He tells me that they're not done (of course not!) and that he needed to run out to make a delivery and that he'd call me in 10-15minutes when he got back. He doesn't ever call me, but I decide to go in anyways. I show up, they're not done. I tell him, to give me some blank plates (for the ones he lost) and refund me for last year's. He's ok with that (and actually gives me much more than what I paid last year because he couldn't replace 2 of my silver plates) and that was that. In the end, I came out of it ok, but I wasted a bunch of time, energy, and stress, on going back and forth with a guy who, well, to be frank, could never remember who I was even though in the span of 3 weeks I had called 10+ times, left a couple of voicemails, had stopped in 7 times, and sent an email. Pretty displeased and disappointed that it came down to this.

A "refurbished" Seiko Alpinist. $188.00, $50 in shipping, $34 in tariff fees, (thank you very little you know who). I knew it was a gamble. It gained four or five minutes per hour. I hoped an adjustment or some work could at least make the watch serviceable. Walked into ARC, no appointment. Kelsy greeted me, directed me to Masami, who stopped his work to look at my watch, he politely identified it as a counterfeit, and said he would adjust the watch (NO CHARGE) to make it as good as it could be. "Would you mind waiting 15 minutes, sir?" What, really?! While Masami adjusted my Fakeo, Kelsy showed me about ten watches that I liked, (an hour), answered my questions, had great acumen, demeanor, and professional poise without projecting attitude or qualifying me, treated me like I was the only one in the store, and confirmed a thing or two she wasn't 100% sure of. Excellent. I don't trust anyone who claims to know everything. I wound up buying a beautiful and very reasonably priced (less than $350 out the door) Seiko and identified another that I will buy in the future. IT GETS BETTER! I asked Masami if installing new guts in my Fakeo would be a good idea, as I don't care about the status, I just like the looks of the watch and want it to keep time. He said he could do that, gave me an estimate, and said that just buying the authentic model would be a better financial path for the long term. I agreed. Always buy the best quality you can afford. Also, as I was checking out, I saw a watch that was beautiful, but redundant, with respect to my purchase, and as I asked a question about the band, Kelsy, being honest, wasn't quite positive about the answer... So one of the store owners, overhearing, (sorry I cannot recall her name and spelling), came over and explained the details to answer my question! AND she interrupted an in person interview to do so! AMAZING. So, the price of an education in a field where money can chase unlimited ends was, for me, a value and a lesson learned for not a disasterous price. And, I found a business that I can TRUST, and recommend. Readers, this is where you should take your watch, engraving and timepiece repair needs. When my budget permits, I will be back at ARC WATCH WORKS to get an authentic replacement for my Fakeo.

They may not know the niceties like "I'll be with you in a moment," and the work may not be done the first time you return. But these people are perfectionists! I have an old Rolex. It's nearing seventy, as am I, and I was determined to have it restored to its original state, so that I might use it every day. Believe me, that's easier said than done. Mike did it. Oh it took him a few months. And at times I doubted that I had made the right call. But that old "bubbleback" has been keeping close to perfect time for nearly a year! Mike Shaw is a third generation watch maker. He is proud to have learned from his father and grandfather, and he misses them both. But in a way, they are still sharing a bench with him. He loves to tell stories about them, and it is clear that he still reveres their abilities. That's not all. Mike can fix bands. My daughter-in-law has a 65-year-old Mido, whose expansion bracelet broke a link. It's a pity to replace an original bracelet with something new. Mike repaired the spring perfectly. If you have an heirloom that won't work, you are probably just a bit hesitant about entrusting it to a stranger. I'm telling you - Mike is the guy!
