The main house, built in the mid-1700's, continued with the original family in residence through the 1930's. Sold to the local historical association in the 1950's, the museum houses diverse exhibits on so many aspects of Cape Cod culture. The docents show great knowledge and enthusiasm. The main building contains an immense jam kitchen. Unfortunately, it was closed to visitors for jam production when we were there. We purchased some of their jam in the gift shop and it was delicious! The Nature Center offers fun cooking classes and events like afternoon teas. They also have a pretty garden and a room dedicated to Thornton Burgess' work. I'd highly recommend a visit, especially on a pretty day. Take a picnic!

There is also a cannon that shoots water from the side of the pool. You get wet, which is nice on a warm day. They also have batting cages, which are some of the only ones left on the cape. They were great too. The radar gun for pitching the baseball was also fun. They have two rock walls which are good for ages 6 and up. They have a zip line too, but my son was not old enough to do it. The sifting for gold and gems was a blast, they have several different sized bags to choose from. They contain gems and fossils mixed with sand and you sift with running water. A real fun time. It is cash only and there are no bundles with all or some of the activities.

Full…read moredisclosure, I did not think I was giving five stars when I was looking at places to visit, approaching from the outside, paying at the desk. What changed? So, here's our story. The desk said they would join us to a walking tour already in progress. The tour guides just circle the house, and so you would then leave the tour at the point you entered. In our case, the guide walked downstairs with a lady who immediately took her leave, so we had the tour guide to ourselves. (Good reason to visit places off-season.) As we walked around the rooms, she was explaining things, I was reading, photographing, asking questions, sometimes that didn't have answers... and I started to get the distinct impression that this is a truly local place reflecting what life is like in Centerville. And that's my favorite type of museum. Well. Let me tell you. Because it was just us, the guide started talking a little bit more about stuff that interested us, like some of the local history and families behind the place. And bit by bit, they softened, with smiles, and let us explore things that may not always be on view to the public. And I won't go into details on this public review. But that is how you feel like family instead of a tourist. And by the time we were done looking at the dresses, and the mannequins, and the armaments, and the anchovies, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats... Oh, right. Centerville. Come on a day when it's not crowded, and I bet you'll come away with the five star sentiment yourself.
