My first visit to the salon was back in 2015 and Ayten and her team always do a great job and they are extremely knowledgeable, warm, and friendly. After moving from Harlem to Brooklyn, I tried other salons closer to me and it was a mistake.. I ended up with heat damage. Although I have thick hair, Ayten and her team always reaffirm that I don't need higher heat. Other places immediately want to increase the heat and it leaves my hair very flat, but I always have a nice bounce leaving Ayten. Also, a deep conditioner comes with a silk press, other salons will charge you $25+ for the service. My only gripe is the music and noise level of the salon haha but the quality of work and consistency makes it bearable lol read more

I've been going to Ayten for years... I mean YEARS. I think 2019 is my 5/6th year. All I can say, Ayten has never disappointed me. She has seen my many different hair phases and has helped grow my hair healthy and to my current length, approximately 19" (yes, I measure my hair every few months lol... 24" length goals). I hardly get my hair trimmed professionally because I always left feeling I got jacked. But this time I caved in. I normally trim myself but I wanted something professionally done to start of my new year and my needs were more than I could handle at home. Yelp reviews lead me to Ayten. I have thick full head of natural 4C hair and that's a force to be reckoned with and I feel most salon'ist claim they can work with it but once you sit down they want to unleash their frustration on your poor head. Then my trims always turn into unwanted hair cuts. So I was really scared for my experience here. I went in Dec'15. Late day appt so salon wasn't crowded. Ayten sat me down and asked if I wanted blow dry w/wo flatiron. I was impressed automatically by how not "off putting" she was with my hair. (Again just reflecting to other salons that I show up with 4c natural hair, they faces looked pained as they stare at my hair). My hair was washed by her assistant and through the process I just kept thinking "Goodness gracious, these people don't know what dragon they just have awoken". Then I sat under dryer x 30mins for condition. Hair rinsed and now in my chair with Ayten. Hmmm...l awaited for her to start snagging my left and right with some small tooth comb. Can you tell I was just prepared for the worst? To my delight, she seriously blew dry hair like I had silk tresses and I did not feel like my hair was over heated. I was super impressed. She asked the amount of hair I was comfortable parting with prior to starting the trimming process. I am no ballerina, but I was flexible so she did her thang and I still left with length preserved. I chose this place because it was close by and had amazing reviews. I've never been happier with a decision. I walked in nervous due to having many horrible experiences at other hair salons. That anxiety didn't last long with Ayten. She guided me in her every move and took the time to make sure my haircut was even. Short version: Run, don't walk, to Ayten Farrell Salon. Long version: I came across notice of Ayten's salon on a Harlem website. I was excited to see what looked like a clean, professional salon within walking distance. Ayten made time for me within the next couple hours. Cool. Then she did something that changed my life: An hour before I was supposed to arrive, she called to let me know that, as she had predicted when I called, she was running a little behind with her current client, so I should arrive on the later end of the appointment window she gave me. You mean, a stylist who values MY time? I almost fainted. When I arrived at her salon, she was immediately friendly, warm, and professional. She was also much, much fairer than I expected. I was a little nervous because I've only ever had black and Dominican stylists. But before I could say anything, Ayten looked me straight in the eye and said, "Don't worry! I've done this before." Whew! She checked out my hair and asked about how I style and care for it. Then she offered me beverages AND food! A professional, high-end salon experience in Hamilton Heights! Not only did she give me a great relaxer, she also gives a killer shampoo and roller set. She is funny, smart, and all around lovely. My hair looked (and still looks) awesome. Then she did the second thing that almost made me faint: Toward the end of my appointment, a woman walked in to ask how much it would cost to get her neckline shaved. It was only going to be a couple bucks. The woman asked if she could pay with a card, and Ayten told her that she only takes cash. The woman was getting ready to leave to go get cash and come back when Ayten stopped her and said, "Oh no, just bring it to me tomorrow. Take a seat." The woman must have looked as shocked as I did, because Ayten shrugged and said, "There are still good people in the world." So, I got my hair beautifully styled and a reminder of all that is good about humanity, for only $50. I've paid more for bad service in dirty salons, okay? I am not much of a hugger, but I hugged Ayten before I left that salon like we've known each other for years. I have finally found the home for all my future wash and sets and relaxers! read more

This is the best relaxer I have received in New York since arriving here almost 4 years ago. Since moving away from my stylist of almost 7 years, I have been through the ups and downs of finding another comparable stylist in the city. I've been to the high-end salons charging upwards of 200 for a relaxer (not even including style or deep conditioning!), the Dominican salons in my neighborhood, and random salons given to me by friends and coworkers. None of them have delivered services that I was happy with. Let me also say that my hair is thick. Like 3-heads-worth-of-hair-thick. I am biracial with Nigerian and Azorean heritage- both cultures already have thick, curly manes- and the combination that I have is usually challenging to stylists of all ethnicities. Ayten was wonderful. While she did express her surprise at my hair texture and fullness, she also voiced her appreciation, calling my hair beautiful on multiple occasions. I haven't heard that opinion many times when people have seen my hair in its raw, un-flatironed state. Ayten, at my request, relaxed my hair using Affirm Regular to about 80%. Texturizing can be very hard to do correctly- a fine line exists between underdeveloped, forever-frizzy hair and limp, destroyed overprocessed hair. Somewhere between are healthy, springy relaxed curls that can be worn straight or curly. I waited a while to write this review because while I LOVED the final results as I walked out of the salon, I wanted to see how my hair held up after a few washes to determine if there was any excess shedding or damage. There wasn't! My hair is FINALLY behaving the way it used to behave with my old stylist. Ayten will now be my go-to Manhattan stylist. The search is over! Quickly: Her prices are very reasonable. She and her staff are very personable, but also professional. They offer water/coffee. She does not do multiple clients at one time. No one tried to sell me a knock-off purse or bootleg DVD. A 10-minute walk from the train. JANE CARTER PRODUCTS! Clean, cute salon. I really have no negatives. Sadly, because I live deep in Brooklyn, I can't come as often as I'd like for visits in between relaxers. Maybe, I should have gotten Ayten? Why is it so hard to find good black hair salons in this city? I read all the reviews and was so excited. I got there and I was surprised by the decor, it wasn't inviting at all. When I walked in I was greeted kindly,by the staff and a cute little girl. There was only one client other than myself, the person who was to do my hair had stepped outside and I was told that he would return shortly. Why did I not decide to follow my gut and leave, beats me. The stylist came and started brushing my hair...he was very nice....by the way he was touching and brushing my hair I knew he was a newbie, I asked him how long he's been doing hair and he replied,"all my life, but professionally for about a year." The little kid who was there happened to be one of the stylist daughter(kids are cute, but only till a certain point), I got tired of her real quick. Once Ayten finished her customer, she sat in a chair at the hair washing sink and dozed off. Mouth wide open, eyes shut and completely fell asleep. This lasted for ten minutes, while he was styling my hair i noticed that the salon did not have a professional styling equipments, I asked him why they did not have some professionals irons and burners and he said something about they prefer using a regular iron to control the heat. When he was done, he had chopped off a good amount of hair and my hair didn't look that great. It looked ok, but not I just got out of the salon and my hair looks fly. I was truly devastated. I don't plan on coming back. Pros: the staff is nice. Cons: Staff not having enough experience, the salon is rundown, owner fell asleep, lack of equipments, hair looking ok, and a long train ride. in other words, not worth it at all. This review is long overdue. I went to Ayten's salon for a year and a half, after two arduous years of searching for a decent and affordable salon. During that time, Ayten became more than my hairstylist -- she became family. She has the warmest personality that allows you to open up to her right away. Even beyond that, she is a great at what she does. I have natural hair, and she gave me blowouts that left my hair perfectly straight with healthy sheen. There were a few bumps, but there were quickly ironed out because she's open to constructive criticism. I'm in LA now, and I'm strongly considering going to NY just to get an appointment with her. Where do I begin? I started transitioning from a perm 8 months ago with the intention of growing my hair to a good length before cutting. After seeing how personal many of the stories were I gave Ayten a call and set up an appointment. She was super nice and asked pertinent questions right there on the initial call. My appointment was this morning and I am happy enough to be writing this now. I am a Aveda, drink tea, and sit in a massage chair while I get shampooed kind of girl. This salon is not that place but Ayten's warmth and expertise makes up for that times 100. Ayten asked me what I wanted she assessed how my hair fell, she showed me how she was going to cut and she cut in a way that would let it grow out best. She also recommended products, a timeline for washing and co washing and trims and told me how to protect my hair at night. I came here on 4/30/15 and I had a very positive experience. This salon is filled with friendly staff and customers who are willing to engage in conversations. I went for a big chop and Ayten did an assessment for me before she started. Her assistant washed and conditioned my hair and then it was blown out to be cut. She convinced me to cut a lot but not all to see if I liked it first. She styled my hair and then I was done. It took 5 hours total which was a long time, but I had a lot of hair and it's very thick. Overall, my experience was great. Ayten is one of those people who you would love to be around because their aura exudes positivity. I love her spirit! It took me a day to get used to the styling because she didn't spiral the perm rods, but she took no offense, and she explained to me that she is always willing to learn when it comes to Black Natural hair. I think that makes the salon that much better because she is willing to listen to customers and wants to perfect her craft. I LOVED my time at Ayten's salon. She was so incredibly warm and friendly that I immediately felt at ease (especially how forgiving she was that I was late for my appointment, lol). I was able to meet some of her family and friends at the salon and she was so incredibly sweet to another customer's little 2yr old boy - making him paper airplanes while myself and the other young lady sat underneath the dryer. She also made sure to give me a Keratin treatment (after explaining to me the benefits of it and the science of hair in general) that left my hair feeling SO soft and luxurious. What I loved about her most? She's HONEST. Lol. You don't have to worry about getting a cut/color/ANYthing that she's uncomfortable with performing on you (in other words, you won't be a test dummy). Absolutely fantastic. I was initially suspicious of all the great reviews (you never know who's writing them) but decided to give it a try. I have a very long hair so I figured if it turned out to be a disaster I could grow it out quickly. I am delighted to say I have found my neighborhood spot. I'll be returning as long as they're there. Rarely do multiple stylists work so well together but Ayten gave me a fantastic cut which was followed up by an amazing blow dry and style by Marisol. I'm a Columbia University Medical Center student and was in desperate need for a haircut. One of the terrible things about my masters program is that we live in the Washington Heights area, which is far away from any good places for shop and leisure. The nearby haircut places were unisex and barbershops. Twenty dollars for a cheap poor haircut is not my style. I'd rather pay thirty dollars more for someone to style and treat my hair! I found Ayten on yelp, so I ventured to Hamilton Heights. I called ahead on Thursday and I was able to get booked for a Saturday evening cut. Make sure you call ahead to confirm, there was a little mix up with my appointment time, nothing too major. Ayten was very apologetic for the mix up. The salon is modernized and cute! Ayten listens to what you want and offers suggestions and tips. She really understands hair! I came in with heavy cluttered layers and left with a cleaner more sophisticated cut. I just loved that she connected my bangs with the rest of the cut- my bangs flow nicely. Overall great experience. Definitely, I have found my hair salon and I don't have to pay ridiculous Manhattan prices for a good haircut. Haircuts are 35-55 dollars- check the website! I visited the salon for the first time today. From the minute I stepped in the door I felt welcomed. Ayten immediately acknowledged me and offered me something to drink. My appointment was very personalized and I felt like she really wanted to get to know me and how she could help me to maintain healthy hair, I wasn't just another head in her chair. The appointment got even better when the mimosas started being poured :) My appointment was great, my hair came out feeling healthy and looking beautiful. Ayten really cares about you and your hair. I've gone twice (about to schedule my 3rd appointment) and both times I left thoroughly empowered and satisfied. I have tightly curled natural hair (some might say 4C) and to be honest, I have no idea how to care for it. Ayten agreed to teach me which products I should be using in my hair and how to care for it. 4.5 out of 5 stars. It's been almost a year and a half since I had my hair done by Ayten. I had one haircut (not by Ayten) within that time, so I arrived at the salon with a lot of dead ends and a shapeless mass of hair. The hair at the top of my head is a looser texture, so it was growing into a "mushroom", and I wanted a rounder shape. I told Ayten I what I wanted and, oh, what a difference a year makes! Apparently she has seen a lot--I mean, a lot--of natural Black hair since I last saw her. The first time Ayten did my hair, she made it very clear that she was not that familiar with my texture, but that she was eager to learn. This time, she heard what I had to say, and she confidently replied, "I know exactly what to do." Ayten whipped out her Jane Carter products, her Denman brush, and her hair dryer on low heat, and went to town. She did a beautiful job, and I'm very happy with the cut. I rate this experience a 4.5 out of 5 because a) there was a minor amount of heat damage, and the hair at the very top of my head is a little frizzy and 2) a small section of my hair is choppy looking, and I'll need to go back to get it evened out. That's the risk you run when straightening curly hair to cut it, though--a risk I will gladly take so I don't drop $150-$400 for a deep condition and cut. Once again, I highly recommend Ayten! She's very knowledgeable about hair health, knows her way around a curly head of hair, and is just a lovely person. I will definitely not wait so long to return. read more

The only reason this salon is getting rated five stars is because five is the highest I can go. Otherwise, I would give it a million more! Seriously. Sunday night (August 3rd) I came to visit my girlfriend and her family who lives in New York for only a few days, and for the past few months I've been dying to cut my hair (which was a little past shoulder length). Not only because I leave for the Army August 18th, but because I hadn't had a relaxer in two years and due to heat damage, my hair wasn't transitioning as well as it was when I first started. Needless to say, I wanted my hair cut really, really short so I could manage it, as well as "wash-and-go," and get my natural curl pattern back. Upon arriving to New York, I was indecisive as to whether or not I wanted to get my hair cut in New York or back home a few states away. My girlfriend (who is already natural) kept reminding me that if I wanted to get my hair cut in New York, I needed to look ASAP because (understandably) salons usually don't have openings at such a short notice. Monday morning (two days before I was scheduled to leave New York) my girlfriend and I found ourselves looking at natural hair cuts online for ideas, and shortly after, we were looking at natural hair salons in New York as well. We came across 2 or 3 natural hair salons that seemed good based on their reviews, pricing, and definitely client photos. Shortly after, we were making phone calls. Ayten's was our first call, and surprisingly enough, they were able to fit me in Wednesday morning. Upon arrival, my girlfriend and I felt comfortable. The shop opened right on time, and Ayten came on time as well. I showed her a picture of the style I wanted, and she asked what attracted me about the style. Asked about my hopes, worries, fears etc. regarding my hair and the style I wanted. Then she got right to work and the rest is history. What I love so much about Ayten Farrell Salon is that I felt so comfortable and that her main concern was making sure that my needs were meant. She took my idea, gave me her personal input and I gave mine, and we went from there. You can definitely trust Ayten and tell that she knows what she's talking about. I would recommend this salon to any and everyone - natural or not. The stylists there are more than willing to not only give you tips and answer questions while you're there, but also while you're away. They are so helpful and kind. If you value your time, your hair and money, DO NOT GO TO THIS SALON!! This Salon is mediocre at best, and based off of my horrible experience yesterday, they simply are incompetent and have no concept of professionalism when it comes to RESPECTING your appointment time. I've actually been to this salon twice before. The first time I went in, I met with the owner, Ayten, for a simple wash and trim. She talked my ears off about "black hair" and how to take care for it, which I get but she just took it too far. Now mind you she's a European woman who has an affinity for black natural hair. Okay, cool. But I don't need you lecturing me as if you're the first white person who have discovered healthy hair care for black women. Thanks lady, but you're not the first nor are you the best. The only reason I didn't walk out of her salon then is because I desperately needed a good wash and trim, and so I sucked it up and let the black hair care priestess lecture me while doing my hair. My trim was pretty decent, so I decided to come back a second time for a weave cut, but my weave was cut by one of her other stylist who did a pretty good job. Now let us fast forward to yesterday: I scheduled this appointment 3 weeks ago for a simple wash and trim. My appointment was scheduled at 12pm. I arrived at 11:50am as I wanted to arrive on time, and not a minute later, as I value and respect my hair stylist's time. I wish I could say that this hair salon value and respect their customers' time as well, but they DON'T. When I arrived no one greeted me, which was fine as each stylist had a client in his/her chair; however, it would have been nice if someone - anyone - would at the very least make eye contact with me and simply say that someone would be with me shortly. After sitting there for a good 10 to 15 minutes, one of the stylists, Beatrice, looked back at me and asked me for my name. After she realized that I was her 12pm appointment, she informed me that she would be with me shortly. Now here's my concern: she was JUST starting on someone else's hair - and we're not talking about a quick flat iron or a trim. Nope! She was installing a full crochet weave into this client's hair. Everything in me wanted to leave, but I made the silly mistake in thinking that she, supposed professional, would honor my appointment time and would promptly deliver the services I requested and discussed over the phone 3 weeks ago and AGAIN with her when she took me over to the shampoo chair to wash my hair. Nope, of course not. It was wishful thinking on my end, and I would greatly pay for it. After she washed my hair, she placed me under the dryer for 30 minutes for a deep conditioner treatment. I suppose she thought that by some miracle, she would be able to install a full weave into this client's hair before my dryer went off. Clearly not the case. So after the dryer goes off, I wait another 30 minutes before she sends the shampoo girl over to wash the conditioner out of my hair. While I'm patiently waiting, she's talking it up with her client and the owner, Ayten, who can clearly tell that I'm growing impatient but does absolutely nothing and continues to talk on and on about the origins of her German last name. So after another half an hour, Beatrice has her shampoo girl blow-dry my hair. Mind you I've been there for 2 hours and I'm just now getting my hair blow-dry? Unbelievable! She finally makes her way to me (keep in mind that she's still installing this other client's crochet weave), and begins to flat iron my hair. But wait for it - she has the nerve to ask me for the FOURTH TIME if I want a trim. I say yes I do, then she turns to the owner, Ayten, and asked her if she could do my trim as apparently Beatrice does not know how, I suppose. Like, are you for real right now?! What a waste of time! Mind you, when she asked Ayten if she could do my trim it was going on 3pm AND she too had a client in her seat whose hair she was JUST starting on. So that meant that I would have to wait another 2 to 3 hours for a trim?! No way.I decided to pay and leave. Total cost for my pain and trouble, you ask? $65.00 for a horrible wash, no trim hairstyle. As I quickly exited out, Ayten ( the black hair care priestess) mockingly called out "have a good day" - seriously?! I'm the paying customer and yet you're giving me attitude? Really?! I did my part and arrived to my appointment early and yet I'm treated as if I did something wrong? Wow. Good people, please save your money and avoid going to this place. This hair salon is overhyped by people who are in awe of some European lady who is willing to finger black hair and hire incompetent hairstylists with little experience who have no concept of honoring their clients' time. After time out of NYC I returned to Ayten Farrell Salon. It was great coming home. This is where I first decided to go natural so it was fitting that this is where I finally decided to do the big reveal. Ayten gave me a fabulous color and cut. She worked tediously to separate my kinky coils. What a fabulous job!! I left wearing my natural hair for the first time in 20 years and felt fabulous. I am still loving it a week later.
