Basically walked in and received immediate, competent and friendly service from Kaylyn! Serving an older clientele--or perhaps it was a function of my appointment time (2 pm on a Wednesday)--I was able to make an appointment as I walked to the salon after a disappointing hair experience 12 blocks north. I couldn't find the salon entrance at first--you have to enter the vestibule of the ground-floor diner--and go up a flight to the duplex salon. I was immediately shampooed by Kaylyn, after which I showed her some inspo styles. She assured me the cut I requested was not unreasonable for my hair type and quickly delivered. She then added product and did a blowout before dry cutting for shape and precision. And she was kind enough to take before and after photos. My cut came out to a competitive $114 when paying by card, and you're offered a piece of milk or dark chocolate upon checking out. I am at a loss to understand why anyone would use this salon. I will never use Yelp to make a decision about anything. The entrance is a somewhat narrow, old, long staircase. You have to be very careful. There is no ADA accommodation - which now a days is unacceptable. My haircut was one of the worst I have had in years. The back is uneven and choppy. Cutter didn't even offer to show me the back of.my hair or make ANY effort to style it. In fact, when I told her how I preferred the front to look, she made a very slight effort to fix it - which did nothing - and said she had to trim someone's bangs. When I got home, I could see that the back was awful and the rest not my h better. This place was not expensive but not cheap. You are not offered water or coffee. There is nothing pleasant or relaxing about this experience. I made an appointment at another place in a few days to have this haircut fixed - and using someone that was recommended to me and that I should have gone to in the first place. I love this place. There are many great stylists, but what I love most is their honesty and professionalism. Today I went in to "fix" a color and highlight I got at another salon last week. I saw Alex who I asked to add a couple foils, fearing it looked too dark. He said he wouldn't advise it, that it will damage my hair and that with a few washes/sun exposures it will be as bright as can be. This review is for my bang trim experience. I was due for a bang trim, and the place I usually go to was booked for the weekend. Salon Above is near my workplace, so I figured with the good reviews and price point, I should be okay. I don't know if all stylists at the salon do bang trims like Danielle, or if they are doing a modified version due to the pandemic. If that is the case, I do not think they should offer bang trims during this time. All the previous times I have gotten a bang trim at other places, the hairdresser has attempted to straighten my bangs before cutting them because I have a natural curl in my hair. In addition, they trim the bangs a layer at a time. You want to make sure the base layer is even, so the styling looks even. Danielle literally just took my hair as it was and cut it. If I did not direct her to thin it out, the cut would've taken all of two minutes. I don't know about your hair, but my hair does not fall the same way every day. Thus, my bangs are now really uneven. I think I would've been more lenient if this didn't cost $15. Lesson learned the hard way I suppose. I very very rarely ever leave reviews, especially when I have had a pleasant experience here previously. The first time I came was for highlights and those were great. This review is for a cut I got a week ago. Before coming in I had nice, long hair which had grown out some layers, and I simply asked for a face framing layers and even showed a pic that clearly exemplified that style. I really don't want to say the stylists name because she was very very nice and may have been having an off day. I started to have a bad feeling when the thinning shears came out and it felt like I was losing a lot of hair. I had stated multiple times that I wanted to maintain my length. She took off at least 4 inches. Needless to say she blew it out and I maintained face in the salon but I wanted to downright sob (I did when I got home). I currently have a mullet...the layers in the back of my head are extremely uneven and piecey. For someone who already had thin hair, my hair is even thinner now. It was really upsetting when I got home and was able to play with my hair a little and I felt like I had nothing there. Needless to say, I feel like I was robbed of $100 and left feeling really distraught over what my hair looks like. It will grow back of course, but having to manage this style in the meantime is proving very difficult read more

Excellent haircut. Danielle did a wonderful job. I asked for a conventional/professional men's style (longer on the top, shorter on the sides), and she not only cut it beautifully, she also tailored it to my face shape and hair type. The salon experience was safe and friendly. I was impressed by the precautions the business has taken. And every staff member was kind and welcoming. Having mostly gone to barber shops since moving to Manhattan, I was blown away by the overall quality of both the cut and the experience. My long-term hairdresser left NYC in the pandemic so I'm trying to find a new one. I appreciate that they got me in that week. I saw Brenda and she did a root touch up and a highlight at the same time (total time saver, loved that). The color was fine, nothing amazing, but fine. The thing I hate about NYC -and this place is over the top- is the additional cost to dry your hair. How is this an extra charge in the first place? How can you see the cut and color if you don't dry it? But I digress. Salon Above charges $50 to dry your hair. I have straight, thin hair just past my shoulders. It wasn't a blow out of thick or wavy hair, she didn't really style it do anything really nice, it took 15 minutes. Ok so it's time in your chair, then charge me $25. No wonder the woman next to me was drying her own hair. This is the most I've ever seen any salon charge for a dry and a shame for not adjusting your price for the work, Salon Above. I won't be back, there are much better places around. read more

I highly recommend George, who gave me the bob featured in my picture, which has received many compliments. He is well trained, takes his time, and is a good conversationalist. I've been to this salon when it is desserted and mobbed, and in the latter case, it's not great to be seated on the main floor. One time, I was taken to the upper floor, which was much more spacious, and it felt like being in a private apartment. If you can, request to be up there. My only complaint is that I wish they let you put tips on credit cards. read more

When I came to the city 3 years ago with a shaved head, I was in desperate need of a capable and relatable stylist. Adrienne, specifically, has been my Wonder Woman in helping me grow it back gracefully. Aside from her skills in cuts, Adrienne meticulously (yet, effortlessly) primps, highlights, and styles. She has helped me in my transition of edgy normalcy (I teach, yet, I'm not a mom) and I had her prepare my hair for my wedding. Recently, I asked her to help me in my transition from brunette to ombré mermaid. I could not be happier with the results. Adrienne takes her time to add dimension, frame you face, and emphasize your desired look. She is most certainly a perfectionist that devotes time and care to each of her clients and is willing to take risks. Her creativity is unsurpassed and her personality is one to be coveted. Apart from Adrienne, the salon itself is clean, calm, vintage-chic and intimate. It's quite a relaxing experience sitting in that chair. To sweeten the deal, you're always offered water or tea during your visit, and upon your departure, the receptionist offers you a chocolate (milk or dark). Well my stylist is in NJ and normally I'd make the trek but I found myself without much time to spare before the holidays so I decided to do some yelp searching and came across Salon Above. It's a super cute salon that makes you feel right at home, by offering you something to drink as you arrive and a chocolate as you go. I had the fortune of having George as my stylist. He was very friendly and fun to chat with as I got my consultation, wash, cut, and dry and offered some helpful advice in response to some of my hair maintenance questions. A neighbor recommended Salon Above and I'm so happy I came here. Monika cut my hair and she was both eager to discuss what I wanted and have had in the past and offer suggestions of her own. She's a knowledgeable colorist as well, but I didn't need those services. The best thing about this place is that the haircut is so good I can go a few months without getting a trim.. it looks good the day I walk out it looks good 2 months later!. The atmosphere is wonderful too. The decor is elegant and sophisticated but it feels like an old school hair salon where you laugh, have fun and catch up with your girlfriends. Just had the best haircut I've had--not only in my four years of living here in NYC-- but honestly, since I moved away from DC in 2009. Yup, best haircut in 8 years. I had read reviews here, so I went to see Brenda for a highlight and color. I've been trying to up my game at work, and wanted something sleek and professional but also with a little edge. I came in with two photos--one for cut, one for color--and Brenda was ON IT. What sets her apart from the other stylists I've seen recently was how carefully she paid attention to every detail. I've had plenty of good-enough haircuts: plenty of stylists will do a decent job on the cut, make sure it looks good in the moment, and call it done. Brenda, on the other hand, was intent and focused every step of the way. From the initial highlights to the face-framing extra highlights I asked for, from the time under the dryer to the glazing, and then to the haircut--she paid attention to every detail. There have been times during past hair appointments I've felt forgotten--there I am, with my hair in foils, wondering if my stylist has forgotten about me, imagining what fresh hell my hair will turn into after too many minutes of dye. But not here: Brenda kept coming over to check, kept looking at how the dye was reacting, kept touching base. And the same thing was true during the haircut. She spent long minutes making sure the cut was exactly right; then she spent long minutes on the bangs. After that she did a blow-dry, and I thought for sure we were nearly done--but then she said I needed some texture, so she spent another ten or fifteen minutes working on my cut. The result was the best hair I've had in years. The color is natural but at the same time exciting; the cut is great from the front but also from every angle. In short: the price tag was over the $200 threshold--but this is NYC, and you can spend that much on a haircut/color that ends up looking mediocre after a week. I would suggest that if you haven't yet found a stylist that makes you feel spectacular, come have your hair done by Brenda. You might not find her as marvellous as I did--but I would say it's worth a shot. read more

I do not have very high maintenance hair and just needed a basic haircut, but wanted to make sure it was a pleasant and safe experience and Salon Above delivered! There were only 4 people in the salon total while I was there (myself, receptionist, two salon professionals) and everything was very clean. They are definitely taking COVID-19 precautions seriously. I have never been before and I randomly chose Dee as my stylist because the available times were good for me and she was wonderful! She asked me before making any length cuts, she made good recommendations, she was very friendly and clearly skilled at her job. And I was so happy with how my haircut turned out. LOVED my curly haircut, and adored the wild colors done on my full head! I've been going to Salon Above for years, ever since I discovered that Frank (who owns the salon and is also a stylist) really knows what he's doing with curly hair. In my experience, that's not easy to find. It's also the place where I first ventured into fashion colors (purple, teal...) and where I just had Adrienne's gifted touch change all of my hair into a gorgeous hombre from plum to purple to magenta to red! I brought in inspiration pictures and she worked with me to get it perfect!! If you're looking for a chill, funky, lovely space, with nice people, great cuts and color, and super-relaxing shampoos, this is your place. Loved my experience here! I made a same-day appointment for Patricia to cut my hair and walked out with a fantastic new 'do. First time I've gone here, but planning to become a regular now. I was a little nervous to go indoors during this pandemic, but there was a temperature check at the door, questions you had to answer to make you think twice about going in if you have been around someone who was or are feeling symptoms, and everyone was wearing a mask. I had read reviews here and decided to give it a try. I haven't really found a stylist I love that got my style until now. I called up to see if there were any spots open and got an appointment for just one hour. It may seem a little confusing at first but you enter the Diner. (There is then a stair case for upstairs or make a left for the diner) I hadn't booked with any artist but was happy when I had Adrianna who I read could be right up my style. And I was right. If you like funky hair colors, edgy haircuts, she is your gal! Sometimes it can be hard to find someone who gets that style completely. The haircut I got her was fine but the stylist barely even dried my hair. The roots were wet, there was no style to it ( just straight) and I left with my hair poofy. I just put it in a ponytail 2 minutes after I left. All this for one of the most expensive haircuts I've received. Reminded me of the haircuts in the burbs that I'd get for $14.99.
