I'd like to apologize for not reviewing sooner!! This is a REAL hat store. This family-owned business has been a fixture in the valley for decades, and while I used two different hatmakers when I lived and worked in Colorado, they didn't come close to the expertise of this outfit. As a native to the valley, the damage from sun exposure began as an outside kid. As a young adult starting out as a horse professional, I wore what most people wore - a basball cap. In my 30's, the dermatologists began their annual battle to repair the damage, instructing me to 'stay out of the sun'. Yeah, right. After one session of extensive repair, Doc really chewed me out! I explained my work, to which he exclaimed, 'Then wear a real hat!' The baseball cap only shaded my eyes, not my face, nose, chin, ears, neck, chest... and the damage was requiring surgeons. Seriously. So began my quest to every western shop to try to make a hat work for me. I had no idea that the pain & headache was because the shape of my head IS NOT ROUND, like most people, yet every off the shelf hat is! To wear a hat snug enough to stay on while horseback, yet comfortable, seemed impossible. One day I was miserable with yet another 'round' hat I was forcing myself to wear when someone told me about a place that makes quality hats exactly to the shape of your head, allowing for even, comfortable pressure. No way! What? Don't even know what I did with those stupid round torturous hats. Might've run them over with the truck AND trailer! You can imagine the rest! That antique contraption they use to get the shape of your noggin is the game-changer! Over 30 years, Az-Tex has made probably 6 hats for me, worn morning to night outside working. They last forever, and my new hats were usually a style change I was looking for. They clean up like brand-new and are really an item one could pass down to kids or grandkids. Retired now, I go there for my golf hats! So, again, sorry I hadn't reviewed before now! Thank you, Az-Tex! Your expertise made my career so much easier! read more

While they do seem to have a lot of hats, this establishment is not what I would consider a proper haberdashery. The storefront is definitely a tourist shop. I'll add that there was a lady keeping the store by herself. She was quite short and more than a little cranky. Shame. I went in knowing what I wanted. When she couldn't produce there was no thought of taking my measurements and ordering for me. Just "we might get some more in." I need more certainty than that if an establishment is to win my custom. I will not be back. read more

I inherited my fathers cowboy hat that he wore as long as I can remember, probably purchased sometime in the late 60's or early 70's. The hat was really old and faded and just kind of beat up, plus didn't fit my head which is bigger. I was really worried about where to send this to be restored because of how sentimental it was to me, and plus, who would do the quality job I was looking for. I decided to go with Az-Tex Hat company even though they have so so reviews, but saw some before and after pictures of some hats they restored and decided they looked like they did quality work so I sent it in for them to do. I will tell you it took a while and communication wasn't they best, but the quality of work just BLEW my mind. I received the hat today and was so blown away that I decided to leave a review instantly recommending this place for hat restorations, amazing job and even did what I didn't think they could do. Because the hat was faded and actually couldn't be dyed because of the type of felt used, they literally flipped the hat inside out and re-formed it's shape. It literally looks brand new. Hey there , so yes I've been here before, but it was 20 years ago and I decided it's time to have my hat "serviced" and by that I mean to have it gone over top to bottom including new custom ribbon around the crown and new block with "Gus" crease and a brim edge pencil curl They custom make hats as well and utilize great instruments that take a measurement of your head... it's a really neat contraption The hat is a 1980 Resistol "black gold" 20x that use to have the cattleman crease 65 so it was a bit taller than most cattleman crease crowns The hat was done in a month but looks absolutely brand new and everything done to it I could image. I'm a shorter guy 5'8" and a bit in the heavy side at 240 but this hat look good on me and I'm not a tall crown hat wearer The lady was very nice and professional at the same time Why not 5 stars... I believe it's because the location is in the middle of "Old Town" Scottsdale so the rental will be very high... so to get the hat done was a little higher than I expected but the work was amazing... read more

Great selection of Stetson hats; unfortunately the hat I purchased from them was marked up 50% from $195 to $295. The owner was defensive about the mark up claiming that Stetson's pricing was wrong on their website. I would recommend going someplace else for your western wear. read more

Bought a hat for $87 was told it's real leather. Next day I'm up in Sedona and see the exact same hat for $38 and a tag in it that was cut out of mine saying it wasn't even real leather. if I had more time in the state I would've been bringing the hat back. read more

Not sure what this stores hours are... did a great job on my hat by all means. However, I drove after work 3 times to pick up my hat and got to the store before 4:45pm and doors were closed and no one answers the phone. The last time I even told one of the workers on the phone that I was on the way there and showed up and the door was still locked. Bad way to run a business if you ask me. Especially since I am coming from the other side of town and am coming out of my way to make it before the store closes. If the store closes at 4:30pm this needs to be listed on their website!! read more

If you are looking for any kind of obscure hat this is your place! They have all kinds of hats here! They even have stuff in storage that they can get if you need something that is 'out of season'. I happened to walk in a few days after the Kentucky Derby and what a treat, so many amazing, beautiful, well-made hats!! I was there for another need, but wow, I almost wanted to buy a crazy derby hat...such COOL stuff! The sales associate was extremely helpful; you can tell they know their hats (any genre). They are a bit on the expensive side, but nice well-made hats are pricey. read more

It was the pink cowboy hat in the window that got my attention and glad I went in. You want hats? This place has got them - all kinds, all sizes! And that is good because one or two sizes does NOT fit all. Plus they will measure your noggin to be sure. I was going to go for a red cowboy hat since it was holiday time but fell in love with this red top hat which I rocked through December. Worst customer service I have seen in oh, about a hundred years. Walked it and looked around... I was the only customer in the whole place. At first I thought no one was there. So I looked at their product. Prices seem kind of high. Then a homeless guy walks in trying to sell something on consignment (!) and I hear a woman's voice. She tells the guy "no" and he leaves. Then after browsing alone for a few more minutes, and not seeing the brand I was looking for, I headed for the door. She never said hi, and made no effort to come offer any assistance or service. I just purchased a fedora here on 4/29. On 5/1 I go up to Sedona for the day and walk into a boutique wearing my new fedora. The employee asked if I purchased the hat at her store because they had the exact same one and exact same brand. I replied no, I purchased it in Old Town Scottsdale. Well I paid $50 for this hat and this boutique literally had the EXACT same hat for $25!! I was so upset! I mean a few bucks-whatever, but literary DOUBLE the price?!! Total rip off. Was provided incorrect info by salesperson, mistakenly referring to wrong item, then left on hold for over 10 mins, then no answer with multiple attempts to call back. I love this hat store! After shopping every other hat store in the valley, I finally was fed up with baseball caps and wanna-be fedoras. I needed a 'real' hat, I needed a professional hatter - I needed AZ-Tex. After arriving on-site I could tell I was in the right place: a large, comfortable great-room stuffed wall to wall with fine head gear. The sales person seemed to know I needed special care, as I was taken under her wing. We spent nearly an hour working though the store's many offerings, trying on and speaking about a wide verity of hats before I found the right one. It's made of leather with a screened top for ventilation (a must in the AZ summer) and it is easy on the eyes. So was the price. For the kicker, after a few days I was concerned that it may be a little too big. I arrived back at the store and there was another capable salesperson on the floor. She was just as kind and knowledgeable as the first. After much contemplation and re-measurements, I ended up having the hat replaced with a new one that was the next size down. It still wasn't a perfect fit and AZ-Tex respectfully demanded that I allow them to make it so. She took the hat into her shop in the back and after a few moments emerged with my hat, but it was professionally modified to be just a little smaller for a custom fit - like I said, I needed a hatter, not a kid selling franchised caps. As I left I was told that I can come back anytime and they will adjust the hat as needed. Come back I shall. Not so much because I think that this hat will need another adjustment, but because I saw another one there that also wants to live on my head. Saw a review and thought they would be the best around. well they first said "this is no problem give me a couple days and we will have it look like new." well after 8 DAYS of them saying "oh its on the table we will have it ready tomorrow" i finally walked into the store and they had them ready. only problem is they didn't fix the problem. was completely upset and would never recommend them to anyone!!! read more
