Heaven in a strip mall. I didn't expect much from this neon engulfed palace right off of Route 70 that looks more amenable to take-out dining and just may be a restaurant by accident. What you won't find is a menu swimming in Doritos-inspired Taco Bell abominations that are excreted into your car through a pulsating sphincter cut into the side of the building. This is the real deal. Fresh and flavorful featuring ginormous portions that should be enough for three meals. The Tacos Dorados appetizer and the Azteca Fajitas (chicken, beef, shrimp) were more than enough for two but we experimented with some beef enchiladas that were outworldly. One minor observation. Dinner plates were simply not provided until we asked and napkins were also nowhere to be found until we insisted and I ran out of sleeve. With a less stellar kitchen, stars would have been shaved but Azteca remains the mighty hole-in-the wall Mexican gem where the menu carries the day. Enjoy. read more

Once she calls me, I make my order and hang up. 5 minutes later I get a call saying they are terribly sorry but they can't honor the special they have on the menu on their website. Had dinner here last night, got sat down and were given the chips and salsa. I went with the Durango combo which was a chicken taco, nachos, taquito, quesadilla with rice and beans. The food was decent but it didn't really have much flavor to it, it was a little bland. It was definitely fresh but wish it had more flavor. Service was okay, and inside had some tables. It cries authentic Mexican cuisine. Chips and homemade salsa were placed on my table by Gianna, my server. This salsa was great and I mean Great. I could have made this my meal. My main course consisted of Azteca Burrito, a combo of steak, chicken & shrimp burrito w/refried black beans, sour cream, & extra cilantro. I was ecstatic for 20 minutes. Rest rooms clean like home. When this place burned down in Toms River I almost cried-we had been eating there since the first day it opened! Now they are open again in Brick and another location is opening on 9 in Toms River (across from Carl's fence). Yay! The food is just amazing-it's fresh and down right delicious! This place is the worst ! The service is horrendous, and the food was exceptionally bad ! It came out cold the soup and we asked to have it reheated and they said we'll put it in the microwave and that'll be good ! With a huge attitude ! Then on main meal came out and that was ice cold ! My family and I had dinner here last night. Since there are few good Mexican places locally we were really hoping for this place to be a winner. They recently opened so we expect a few hiccups. Our server was a friendly young lady. She was pretty on top of things. The stuffed avocado appetizer was delicious! There were a decent amount of shrimp in the dish - well worth the 11 dollar price tag! I enjoyed the carnitas burrito as my wife enjoyed her shrimp and roasted garlic. We will definitely be back but a few minor comments: We had both asked for black beans and received refried instead. My wife's shrimp were served with a side of mayo. Mayo at a Mexican place??? We found this a bit odd.. I have an allergy to mayo and guess I need to specify in the future no mayo. Kids menu is a bit pricey. 10 dollars for a kids cheese quesadilla is a bit much. read more

This new restaurant is located where a Vietnamese one was was before. It was a Wednesday night so it wasn't busy. As soon as we sat down our server came and took our order of drinks. This is a BYOB so only soft drinks were available. Nachos were served: they were crunchy and the 3 different salsas were fresh and tasty. We asked some queso fundido con chorizos for an appetizer and everyone loved it. My grandkid ordered carne a la parrilla which was a very generous portion of a tender flank steak with a salad on the side and beans. He liked it very much. The rest we all had tacos al pastor which were prepared the way they are supposed to, with grilled pineapple, fresh cilantro and onions. Shallots, radishes and beans on the side all for only 8.50$ each. A great deal!!!!! I definitely recommend this place. read more

We were hoping for a good local Mexican place, but the food is mediocre at best, everything lacked a bit of flavor. My wife ordered a steak burrito and the meat was a bit dry and chewy, my chicken burrito was ok. The chips and salsa was ok- sauce was good but many of the chips were small pieces that were like the bottom of the bag type size. And the tamale was atrocious, I don't know how that could've been served... which made it go from a middle of the road 3 to a 2 star. I can't recommend this place and I certainly won't visit a second time when there are many others to try. We can only hope to find something as good as Juanito's in Redbank or Juanito's II in Howell. read more

Great experience Saturday night at EL AZTECA. New location opened recently after their previous location (in Toms River) was lost in a fire. Our family has been patrons of this restaurant for several years at their Toms River location. Saturday was our first time in their new location. We had the "Botana Azteca" as an appetizer; it was more than enough for the 3 of us. Our entrees included Chicken Tacos, Carne a la parilla & Huaraches -steak & chicken; everything fresh & delicious; you get huge portions here so come hungry. Food was absolutely one of the worst Mexican restaurants I've ever been to. Ordered the Corta Azteca. Steak was dry and tough and lacked any flavor whatsoever. The rice and beans must have been sitting there all day. Taco Bell even has fresher tasting food. Avoid this place at all costs as I'm sure you'll be as disappointed as I was. read more
