We discovered B & B when we were looking for a place to bathe our Standard Poodles. Their $5 Wet Dog Wednesday is a great service! As part of the experience, you select the shampoo of your choice. We usually opt for the oatmeal blend. The three tubs are located in the dog section on the right side of the store. There are ramps for dogs to walk up into the tubs and hooks if you need to toggle them. There are always fresh towels to dry your pups and of course pet blow dryers. ( We actually bring our own dryer since it is a little bit more powerful.) Be sure to bring combs and brushes if you need them for your dog. Great place with a friendly staff. This is a cute shop and the animals are moderately well cared for. I stopped by for marine fish specifically. They have a good selection of corals at AWESOEM prices, but their fish are disease ridden. When I went a dozen or more had Ich. This is pretty standard for aquarium stores, but here's the kicker: these diseased fish were MIXED IN with non diseased fish. Yuck! When I mentioned this to one of the workers, an older white man, he treated me like I was stupid and said that all fish have Ich all the time. I'm an experienced marine and freshwater keeper, I'm in several reef clubs, and volunteer extensively with marine groups in the area, and what he said is just not true. I asked if he had the medicine to treat him and he said "oh yeah!" With attitude that told me that he had no intention of treating them or even isolating them. Sad. The reason why this review is four stars is because of the supremely helpful and friendly staff. Everyone else (besides this one jerk) was really sweet. I'm pretty sure that the bad apple being talked about in other reviews is this guy I met-- I'm sooooo lucky to have ran into him my first time there. This shop is an hour from where I live, and I'd rather go to SB reefs where they actually quarantine and treat their fish like living animals anyways. If you're looking for fish, go to Bluewater aquarium zoo in fort Walton, or SB reefs in Pensacola instead. read more

Nice selection of pet foods, toys, treats, etc. In my opinion, I would not recommend buying any fish here. They have a large selection. But the fish don't appear to be properly fed. Anytime I place my hand near the top of the tank. The fish go into a frenzy as if they are starving. I have never seen that at any other pet shops. I also believe the guarantee you receive with any animal purchase is outdated and a bit of a joke. If the animal dies within 14 days, they take half the responsibility and you take half the responsibility. You get half the purchase price in the form of a store credit... Seriously??? Other stores in Mobile have a 14 day guarantee with full credit. Other than that, it's a good place to browse around, and talk to people. The staff are plentiful and have always been helpful and nice. The shelves are nicely stocked, store is clean, and checkout is quick. read more

I loved the variety of supplies for the different species and the convenience of the prices, however some things I noticed made me feel a bit uneasy, as to why I rated them the way I did. Once I walked in, I immediately went towards the reptiles to check prices on supplies. Lookin around at all the different animals, one thing that stuck out and was common among almost all of them- the sizes of the cages. Multiple animals were being kept in cages too small for them... While checking out the reptiles I asked an associate in the reptiles area about the baby bearded dragons, their setup, and their lights. There were at least five babies in one small tank, they only had ONE light on them and it was RED. When asked why they had a red light on them, she tried telling me it was to help them with sleep- complete crap. Bearded dragons need a UV light AND a heat lamp (but not red). The red bulbs can actually keep them from sleeping at night, not only that but can hurt their eyes.. sorry for the 'rant' but it is my review. Pet stores and their employees need to be able to actually provide the best care for the pets they intend on selling. Research EVERYTHING before investing in your pet, half of the employees at pet stores aren't knowledgeable and will feed you wrong information- sometimes leading to the death of an innocent animal that could have been prevented. read more

I worked for them many, many years ago, still the best job I have ever had and if money were no object I would be there still. I have read some of the reviews and maybe the younger generation are less involved in their jobs as some of the older folks but that is everywhere you go. I have had nothing but good experiences with my purchases and while it may take a minute or two to wait your turn it is because so many people are loyal customers and the workers take up time with the customers that need them. I was given every opportunity to learn about all the products and animals, they are proactive in that area but they can't make people learn. This review is for their "Adopt a Pet" event. My parents and I decided to go for this event to see if there is a puppy we wanted to adopt. It is a very convenient process for both side of the adoption. Even though we were there just to look, my mother totally fell in love with a puppy and decided to adopt him. THE PROCESS: The people who wants to give their doggies up for adoption can come by on the indicated event date online to show their dogs. They have to give up their dogs for FREE. The ones who wants to adopt come over, pick the right doggie, pay $5 to B & B and that's it! THE GOOD: It's literally $5 to adopt unlike the animal shelters. THE BAD: We asked the lady who gave up the puppy if the puppy already received necessary shots. Her answer was "yes, just call the veterinary office and they will give you the necessary papers." She gave us the specifics as to her last name, the date of the puppy's birth and the veterinary office the shots were given. Was the info true? NOPE. Oh and the lady also told us that the puppy was already potty trained. True? NOPE. Our precious little puppy pooped and peed all over the house...^^; So yeah, you get what you paid for...but for $5, we have a healthy 10weeks old puppy who is giving joy to my parents everyday. So if you ask me if it was worth it, I would definitely say YES. * Service = you cannot rely on B&B for giving you specific information of the previous owners since they don't keep record. But it is a great event and a lot of needy pets find loving homes like our puppy. * Price = You cannot beat this...$5!!! * Selection = varies on the day. We were looking for a dog that will not grow to more than 15lbs. It is not easy to find the smaller breeds but we were lucky that day. * Location = pretty convenient with plenty of parking. read more

I LOVE B&B. We got our first dog when I was 5 (I'm 21 now) and ever since then B&B has been our go to pet store, 3 dogs, 1 guinea pig, and countless fish later. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and true animal lovers. They carry my dog's food and all the treats he loves most. Over the years I have purchased 1 guinea pig and several fish from them. I am in their rewards program which is honestly a really good program. It's such a treat for my dog when we get to go to the store and it keeps him social and happy. My kids love visiting B&B on Cottage Hill. Every time we are there we have several employees approach to see if we need any help. On this recent visit we did and they found us exactly what we were looking for. The animals and fish look healthy and well taken care of. We love that you can pet the rabbits and guinea pigs and they have a large selection of birds, turtles, cool fish and aquarium plants to view. There are always things to pick up for our fish and dogs. The prices are reasonable and the experience fun for children. They are the only store in town that our fish have survived from. We have been customers at B&B for about a year now. This is by far our favorite pet store! We have shopped every department in this store. My family has two freshwater tanks, 3 dogs, lizards, and a rabbit; as well as two gerbils and a bird I take care of at my work. I can honestly say we have NEVER had a bad experience. The Krewe-members in the freshwater department are extremely knowledgable. They have helped us through every stage of both our tanks. The thing I really love about the staff is they draw from personal experiences with their own tanks. If they use a product themselves then I feel confident I will have success using the same products. The Krewe in the reptile department are amazing as well. They helped us get everything we needed to set up our terrarium which is now thriving. I could go on and on about the Krewe at B&B but I think you get the point. I am an avid goldfish keeper. No other store in Mobile can touch B&B's selection. I can't say much about their other fish selection but no where else in Mobile can you find Ranchu, Telescope, Lionhead or Wakin goldfish other than at B&B. It would be a whole lot better experience to shop at B&B if the staff wasn't so uppity. A little better customer service can go a long way. I've been shopping at B&B for many many years for my dogs. I believe in supporting local companies and B&B has never disappointed- in the dog department. I also have a 140 gallon salt water fish only tank. There aren't many places in Mobile that carry a variety of salt water fish, and as I said earlier, I believe in supporting local companies. I have recently been coming to B&B to purchase a good bit of my salt water fish. Many months ago, I purchased a good amount of cleaning crew along with 3 or 4 fish to add to the rest of my fish. I've never had algae problems with my tank and a few days after I put those fish in my tank, I started to have bad red algae. Needless to say, I treated the water but lost all of my fish, even my very expensive full grown emperor angle. I drained the entire tank and cleaned everything and started over this time with a very experienced crew to take care of my tank. I added a couple of eels, a new adult emperor angel, Dogfish puffer, and a grouper to start with (all purchased from progressive marine). I kept these fish in the tank for 2 months to make sure everything was going well before I went about purchasing more. I wanted to give B&B the benefit of the doubt so I decided to go back. I purchased a Niger triggerfish, red grouper, bicolor angelfish, unique looking angel with an orange tail, and a handful of cleaning crew. When I was at the store, you could see red algae all over most of their tanks but I picked out fish from tanks that appeared to be clean. Few days after I added these fish that were bought from B&B, my red and green algae came back and all of the fish have now started looking terrible- discolored and sick looking. I took a water sample to B&B and the guy assured that everything was fine and said to just give it time. I took that same water sample to another salt water store and they spent over an hour talking me through the ins and outs of treating the tank. This morning 3 fish were dead and the rest were all nearly dead. We have taken the rest of the fish out of the tank to another saltwater store in town where they are holding and taking care of them until we get this under control. It is the most discouraging thing to see so much money and time wasted away because I purchase fish from what I thought was an accredited fish company. I'm not one to blame my tanks issues on someone else which is why I decided to give B&B a second chance. However, the second time disappointed too. My advise to B&B- spend money on hiring a saltwater fish tank expert- one that actually cares about making the fish and the tanks pristine so that future customers won't have this issue. Educate your staff on the different types of algae. And most importantly, treating the algae in your own tanks. read more

Recently we bought a female rabbit from B&B. She is a very sweet, calm rabbit. The staff told us she was a three-month-old, healthy rabbit. Everything was fine at first. However, 10 days later, we were horrified to see a cage full of bloody bedding and a dead baby rabbit. We had absolutely no idea that she was pregnant and could not give her the special attention and food that she needed. This also meant that the staff lied about her age, given that rabbits can not conceive until they are older. Although I understand that the breeder may not have provided sufficient information about her, I would think that it would be the job of staff to check their rabbits for something as basic as a pregnancy. Additionally, we were told that the rabbit had "just come in", which would mean she was already pregnant upon arrival at the store. One can only conclude that B&B does not source their rabbits from reputable breeders and examine their rabbits to ensure their health. read more

I've been going to B&B for the past three years and got my first rodents there. I also got my first dog there from the "Adopt a Pet" event when we moved back from Texas. Though, the poor puppy had Parvo and passed away after a few short weeks of having him. I do not hold B&B accountable for this because they did not sell me the puppy. So when you're looking at the puppies during this event, always make sure your young friend is energetic and happy, and that the people you buy from are not sketchy in the slightest! What I love most about this store is that they've been around forever.. but also that they give you the chance to interact with the critters before you are sure that you want to purchase them, unlike of many other pet stores. Everybody who works there is very nice, accept for one guy who kind of scares me, but he seems like a nice guy, he just doesn't smile nor talk much. He works with the small animals. Today while I was there, I was bitten by a ferret but everybody there was very kind about it and even apologized for the incident. It didn't bother me, but I'm happy that they cared. Soon I will be buying two dumbo rats from here or Petco, and I'd much rather purchase them at B&B. The only problem I have with this store is that everything is a bit pricey, though I understand because it is a local store, not a franchise that makes millions on millions of dollars. B&B is a great pet store, and I hope to shop here for all of my future pets. read more
