From Chattanooga, TN it's about 1 hours and 10-15 minutes and from Nashville, TN its about 2 hours and 45 minutes or 171 miles give or take...about the same distance from Atlanta, GA. I'm a big fan of these small towns where everyone knows everyone and most of the land is farmland. No big strip malls, no McDonalds, no Mcmansions all over the place. From what I can see from us driving by and stopping for about half an hour or so most of the area is local mom and pop. Lots of antique shops and the downtown area looks like it hasn't changed in years with cool vintage signs...There are a few small chains such as a Hardee's and Days Inn. If you grew up in the south then there is a good chance you had an opportunity to take a field trip in school to the Craighead Caverns which is the largest underground lake in the US that's not under a glacier https://thelostsea.com/ I wouldn't mind coming back again next time I'm in the area to check out the cool antique shops...

If you drive into the narrow streets lined with old houses you'll find rather lovely 19th century homes. You might just plan a day to roll around the neighborhood. Beyond that, there's a park with cranky ducks, a gorgeous garden and gazebo adorning the library, and a bandstand near where the old railroad used to be. The imprints of train tracks still run through here. I could easily envision how this as a busy train stop back in it's heyday.

Not many cars when I got there around noon but it was full when I got back on a Saturday around 3pm. Took my dog out for his 10th birthday and he had a blast. Loves outdoors and the water. You can take the full loop and see the smaller falls and the the bigger falls. Or you can see one, come back around and then see the other. The only reason you wouldn't do the full loop is because it does get a little steep and rocky and there is a cable to help get down. Don't let the cable steer you away. I had my dog with me and was a little nervous only using one hand and the other with the leash, but it was pretty simple to get down. Also recommend going right at the split so you can go DOWN the rocks instead of climb up the rocks at the point. Overall gorgeous views. Mostly shaded throughout the hike but be sure to bring water!

We went an hour and a half out of our way to visit The Lost Sea…read more After the experience, I'd do it again. This isn't just a cave tour. It's an underground adventure. The journey takes you about three-quarters of a mile through the cavern at a comfortable 58 degrees, so bring a light jacket unless you enjoy pretending you're on an episode of Survivor: Chilly Cave Edition. The climb back out is roughly the equivalent of 14 stories, though there are three scheduled rest stops to remind you that oxygen is still available. Like many attractions, your experience depends heavily on the guide. Ours, Sam, was knowledgeable and professional, but more matter-of-fact than entertaining. The information was there; the excitement wasn't always. Fortunately, the real star of the show doesn't need a microphone. The underground boat ride across the second-largest known underground lake is absolutely fascinating. Gliding through the darkness while seeing rainbow trout swimming in waters hidden beneath the mountains is one of those experiences that's genuinely hard to describe until you've seen it yourself. The cavern is also packed with history, but I'll let your guide tell those stories rather than spoil part of the adventure. One bonus: they offer free-roaming spelunking areas for those who want to do a little exploring on their own. Five stars. Unique, memorable, and absolutely worth the detour. Some attractions are tourist traps. The Lost Sea is something you'll actually remember.

"Samuel Houston, born March 2, 1793 in Virginia and moved to Tennessee with his widowed mother. At age of sixteen Houston ran away from home to live with the Cherokee Indians on Jolly's Island." "Archaeological artifacts dug up from this island dated historic and prehistoric tribal peoples that lived on the island dating back to the late Eoodland Hamilton phase (ca 600-900), early Mississippian Hiwasee (ca A.D. 1300-1500) The Cherokees which were the last tribe on the island left 1818. Their legacy and fate brought this Memorial Park. The island is also called Jolly's Island, name for Chief John Jolly. As a young boy, Sam Houston lived on this island with the Cherokees. Chief Jolly adopted Sam and gave him an Indian name "The Raven". Possibly, this early influence guided his ambitions to settle the State of Texas. I'm still impressed that our family of 4 all paraglided over the 4th of July weekend! I truly…read morethought one of us would chicken out but nope! My 12 y/o went first then my husband then my 9 y/o then me, and we all had a blast! The staff here is excellent. They educated us on all things paragliding and shared their personal stories of travels around the world. Tons of experience amongst all the pilots here. They're like a melting pot too as one of our pilots was from Costa Rica (Justin) and one was from Russia (Alaina). Pretty cool community of people really. As our weekend stay at Bolt Farm Treehouses got closer, we decided to spend the dough on paragliding. It was $200 per person plus we treated our girls with the GoPro for $50 each. I'd say the experience was everything we hoped for and more. As they explained to us, we were at the winds mercy, and the day we flew (7/2/21), the wind gave us about 10 minutes in the air. They had told us the average was 20 minutes. We saw others fly for longer the next day, but you get what you get with the wind. My youngest flew with Austin, and after watching the GoPro video, he was a great fit. She felt very comfortable and he chatted just the right amount. I had Joe as my pilot, and he was older and very experienced. He even let me take the reigns for a few moments as he said he likes to educate others who may want to be a pilot themselves one day! Each of us landed as planned in the fields below, gathered up the gear, and hopped on the bus to drive back up the mountain. This drive was my least favorite part as I suddenly felt a little green, but luckily they had a case of water bottles that saved me. Due to the price, I don't know that we'd ever become frequenters of paragliding. My girls would love it though as they both immediately asked to do it again! I heard there are only so few places in the world to paraglide, so I'm glad we found this one right around the corner from Bolt Farm where we were staying. Overall, I highly recommend this experience. Perhaps one day, we'll take up lessons to pursue being a pilot, but for now, we're just excited to have shared this experience.
