Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and very friendly. He was patient and we never felt rushed. We were in a van and it was very comfortable and we had plenty of room. For future readers, you'll recall that the spring of 2021 was a crazy time, coming off all the COVID lockdowns. Many distillers, who hadn't been open for tours for many months, were finally opening their doors, and demand for tours and tastings far exceeded availability. Tommy apparently has a few connections, and was able to get us the Connoisseur's Tasting at Heaven Hill, and the full tour and tasting at Maker's Mark. The experience was great: The van was large and comfortable, and Tommy--locally raised--knows the area, it's history, and plenty about the distilleries. In addition to the planned stops, he also made an unscheduled stop at the tiny Limestone Branch Distillery so we could taste some craft cocktails and buy some souvenirs. Bottom line: If you love bourbon, and you're looking for a relaxing, enjoyable, and memorable afternoon in the heart of bourbon country, you will not go wrong with Tommy and CopperTop Tours.

Stumbled upon this amazing place during a random walk around Louisville's Butchertown neighborhood…read more What got me looking was the beautiful "There Is Always Hope" mural on the brick building's exterior. What got me in was the sign advertising "Microbrewed Soy Sauce, Spirits, Tasting Room." What got me to stay was the inviting, cool interior (so welcome on this day approaching 100 degrees), the comfortable couches, throw rug, and green plants. And the bar with free samples. So many free samples! Chocolate bark, caramels, truffles, ginger snaps, benne wafters, and more. Everything I tried was yummy. It wasn't explicitly stated, but sitting at the bar I got the impression I could have as many as I wanted. These truffles could easily be $3-4 apiece in some other shops. And I had too many; the truffles were excellent. I wasn't drinking alcohol that afternoon which is a shame because they had a full bar with lots of bourbons and whiskies and intriguing specialty cocktails. But I did try one of their mocktails, the Matt's Butchertown Oasis: Pineapple juice, their own mint julep syrup, fresh lime juice, club soda, smoked chili rim. Cold and refreshing and not too sweet. Their generosity with samples paid off, at least in my case. I bought so much there: artisan chocolate bars, cocktail cherries, a barbecue sauce and a marinade, a soy sauce and some ponzu. They make at least 4 kinds of oriental sauces, small batch and barrel-aged. I didn't try them but am looking forward to doing so soon. One, the "Bluegrass" is described as "the original. Meaty, brothy, briny, and leathery with a subtle sweetness." The other, the Bourbon Ponzu, is "clean and refreshing. Bright, tangy, tar, and biting with notes of citrus, mildly sweet, and umami flavor." As if I hadn't had enough sweets already, another staff member came by and encouraged me to try the ice cream. I wavered, so they suggested just a taste. Which I accepted. How adorable: a little swirl of soft-serve in a tiny cone no more than 2 inches tall. Salted caramel, very good. Did I really see another customer drizzling smoked soy sauce on theirs? I think so? Sounds weird but could it really work? Something to try perhaps.

The ladies there were friendly, wonderfully helpful, and clearly loved working there. We got to sample so many products to learn what we liked and bought all our many favorites. So much better than picking something random to take home and hope it'd be good. As the only customers at the time, they had time to tell us back stories about the company and products and even give us a short casual tour of the soy sauce brewing and smokers working. You may not be as lucky with how quiet it was for us, but still highly recommend a visit. Great people and a surprising array of well crafted specialty foods.

Kirk was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and even took a ton of candid pictures of us on the trip that he later shared with us. The ride was very comfortable and we had great conversation. A few changes since the last time I was at this winery…read more First off - NEW OWNERS! The previous owner had passed away and his wife sold the property and winery. They were lovely people and based on my recent visit, sold to lovely people. Onto the wines - I believe it was $8 for 6 wines. I had a hard time narrowing down their choices to just 6 as everything sounded so good. The Vidal blanc was the first wine the new owners had completed from start to finish and it was absolutely lovely. They had a delicious selection of dry reds as well. The Kentucky roots was my favorite in this section. The cab was smooth as well. We ended up sitting on their patio and had several bottles of the summer nights. We all had a hard time picking out wines to take home. Needless to say, we will be coming back as the future seems bright for this family and the winery.
