I was talking a walk (at lunch time weekday) and seen the place, decided to go in to check it out. There were 3 people sitting there looked like family members talking and eating not customers. The sign said open so i walked in, no one spoke until I did. Strange a rude women came from the back and said WHAT DO YOU WANT.. I stated looking at the menu to see if i want ANYTHING at this point. A min or o went by she came back out I aske her about and item on the rather small menu and she stated what it was in her native language and pretty much walked off. I kindly exited and did not look back. All these High rise buildings and homes around this restaurant and they were EMPTY , NOW I SEE WHY....Wont get my DOLLARS. This establishment was suggested by the Lyft driver. I am guessing it's close friends or family to him. I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. The meat was over cooked. I ordered two different kinds of Egusi with meat and got two of the same overcooked goat meats it was GROSS, DRY, AND BURNT. The Jollof rice was good! The customer service was lacking. it pains me to say I wouldn't recommend this place. As a person of color, I was greeted with an awkward stare and silence from staff, but that didn't bother me. In fact, I was hopeful: a hole-in-the-wall restaurant with unpleasant or unbothered staff usually means the food is going to slap. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case. The Amala w/Efo (Spinach) was disappointing. Chicken was insanely dry, leaving a noticeable, old aftertaste. Fufu was left to be desire. I may be ignorant with fufu because I never had it gray. It just didn't work for me. In addition, they increased their prices, with the entrée being $20, which would wouldn't have been a problem if the quality of the food matched. read more

So, this place was recommended to me by my Lyft driver. He swore up and down that this was a more authentic restaurant than all of the rest in Chicago. I have gladly been a patron for the past two months and place large orders to last me a few days, i am yet to be disappointed. Also, the portion sizes are well worth the price you pay and the food is simply delicious. Often when i hear my total, i am surprised they don't charge us more!!! That said, service leaves something to be desired and the stuffy ambience of the restaurant space is quite the turn off. Our experience at B& Q was one for the ages. Place was clean with everyone following Covid regulation.Music was the beats of rhythmic bongo by the great Bol Shaka band.Giving one a feeling of being in the midst of ivory poachers in Tanzania. Ambience of burning smell of kerosene and anti mosquito nets made everyone right at home.The artwork especially the red on the walls from a bloodied goat which tried to escape the eatery pre Covid was sentimental.Food was great!! 6 thumbs up!!!Starting with the lion share of appetizers to the main dishes all delightfully and meticulously prepared. The best Ogusi with fufu I've ever tasted. It was so flavorful with a hint of spice. You can choose up to three meats so I just chose 2 pcs goat and 1 fish, their fish was cod. I wanted to try the jollof rice so the owner was nice enough to let me have a sample portion cause I didn't want to buy it as a side if I didn't like it. It was okay; I prefer Ghanaian rice better, don't come for me lol. My preference. I see that they have efo which I love, next time I have to get that. Their plantains are huge, 6pcs for $1. They have steam tilapia, not fried so make sure before you order. The decor and ambiance is very home like, their chairs are cushioned so it's nice. I would suggest that the owners make the place a bit more inviting because every time I come here it looks like it is closed and isolated. Parking can be limited too. So my dad and I keep trying to go to Ben's Noodle and Rice on Wednesdays, which is stupid because that's the only day they are closed. Attempting to go to Siam Noodle and Rice instead on Wednesday 11/27 resulted in our parking a few blocks off Sheridan and getting a good whiff of something goaty and delicious! That something turned out to be B&Q. With a lingering regret for the lost potential of Thai green papaya salad, we let the scent lure us into B&Q instead, despite the fact that we had no idea what we were doing. B&Q is Nigerian, a relaxed, small place with the menu offerings written both on the walls and on the menu. A team of ladies took care of us, one whose shift ended right after taking our order, but we didn't mind because she had been so helpful and kind about us not knowing what anything was. They were out of a few things but substituted according to their taste (as I requested, since I couldn't adequately judge substitutions). My favorite was the codfish in egusi stew. It was extremely tender, with surprisingly few bones for the cut we got, and it was soaking in this vegetably health cocktail of deliciousness. My dad's favorite was the goat, as usual, but he kindly allowed me to suck out most of the marrow. The meat was not the tenderest or the most tough - it lay somewhere in the middle - but the flavor was excellent and aromatic, and definitely the source of the scent that had brought us in. Pounded yam seemed to exist essentially to mop up sauce and kill spice (of which there was a respectable amount). The standard black-eyed peas and plantains kept the meal from being a stomach-leadening meat-fest. We tried some kind of mystery non-alcoholic malt drink. It was weird. Not the good kind of weird. But it's bottled and mass-produced somewhere else and not the restaurant's fault. The price on our bill bore no relation to the prices listed on the menu. It was way too low - $30 for three of us. They may have given us a break because they were out of so many things we ordered. I hope that was what happened and they didn't inadvertently make a math error and stiff themselves! $30 was more than reasonable for the stomach-stuffing amount of food we got. read more

I visited this restaurant years ago and enjoyed the Jollof rice and plantains. Sorry I couldn't same the same about today's visit. The receptionist/ waitress/ cook wasn't the friendliest and didn't seem to want to be bothered. I figured maybe she was having a bad day. After looking around the restaurant I noticed how dirty the door to the kitchen was and prayed it was not a indication of the cleanliness of the kitchen. I just classified it as a "hole in the wall" establishment. After arriving home to eat, as soon as I opened the container of jollof rice, it smelled as if it was in a fire- literally. I mean the scent of a burning building type of fire. The smell was unbearable, my family smelled it as well. What a waist!! I'll just toss this experience up as a donation to the " hole in the wall" in hopes that they will get it together. read more

Nasty food and I was surprised due to the fact that Nigerian food usually is good. All in all most of the Nigerian restaurants in this area aren't great at all. If you want good African food, the east coast is a better option. You'll won't be disappointed. I would consider either Yassa or Badou which are Sengelese cuisines and they don't care if your an American or African the food is always good. read more

B&Q Afro Root Cuisine has some of the best Nigerian food that I have ever tasted! The Jollof rice was engorged with spices and cooked to the perfect consistency. The chicken, beef, and goat meat were very tender and stewed in a loaded sauce that was packed with spices to create a deeply flavoured addition. The staff and waiter were warm and inviting. My waiter offered many recommendations and ensured that those dining were happy with their choices. Overall, my experience was pleasant and the price is an added bonus. The worst service ever! I was sitting there for an hour because the server was not able to communicate properly to the owner. I told him I was going to use a coupon I had purchased. I gave him the order and stated he would run it through his boss. While reading my book i thought he had followed up with the owner already. This is truly a unique restaurant. It doesn't have the traditional services that a sit down restaurant would have but the unique taste of a foreign country to makes up for that. I gave them a three star because sometimes service is a little spotty and the wait for your food could be long however the friendliness of the staff makes up for that. The restaurant is also a little cramped, so is the washroom. But I will go back again I might just carry it out next time. read more

I absolutely LOVE BQ! Been going there for years! Queens food is consistently good and well-priced. Sure getting used to "Nigerian" service as the staff does not hover over you, yet they allow you to finish your meal completely before approach, takes some getting used to. But... the more you visit, the more you learn not to take this act so personal as it appears to be a cultural thing. With CNN or the BCC always playing in the background under sounds of boisterous talk and laughter from some of its regular customers being warmly greeted by its owners... BQ feels like home-away-from-home and I've yet to step foot on Nigerian soil. So... Great food! Great Owners... Great addition to the coveted Chicago food scene. read more

I was so totally surprised at the service last tuesday night. My boys & I drove all the way to the northside for this food. It's pretty good usually. However my order was messed up! They didn't have it prepared properly & had the audacity to have attitudes. Usually the younger lady in the morning she's friendly. Too bad she wasn't there!....Customer service is everything. If you don't truly welcome americans to your restaurant it's in the wrong place. I was cheated out of my money! & the skinny dark guy was very rude!!! Charged me 5.00 for a side of rice that should have came with the ayamase! Usually if i buy jollof rice with stew. The younger girl always tell me to choose 3 meats!! This particular night. I ask the dark heavy lady why didn't meat come with it? She said it doesn't so very displeased & will not return!!!! Dear God, the Egusi Stew with goat and fufu is sooooo delicious that I've had to stop going there because I'm trying to lose weight. There have been times that I've burned my tongue because I couldn't wait for it to cool down. The waitress isn't really chummy, so don't expect her to hang around with small talk and smiling, but you won't really want that anyways since you'll be eating. Keep in mind that it is very SPICY so be sure to ask for a pitcher of water. This dish is sooooo good! I can't say much about the rest of the menu because I've only ever ordered this one item. So so so frigging good! The price for it is about 11 or 12 dollars, SO WORTH IT. read more
