My husband and I came on a week day and we were joined by another couple for an afternoon tour. Our tour guide (I feel terrible for forgetting her name) was super friendly and knowledgeable. She was even able to get most of the antelope and zebra up close for us to see, even though she warned us sometimes it doesn't happen. You can tell everyone who works there cares so much for these animals and their well being. Our guide even introduced us to them by their names and spoke to them and interacted with them lovingly. I honestly learned so much in that small amount of time and gained a new appreciation for these beautiful animals. I loved being able to feed the giraffes at the end. I gave them multiple kisses and have to say how gentle they were. I definitely want to come back on my next visit! read more

The animals are innocent and would get five stars, of course, but the whole experience was actually pretty negative and unprofessional. The tour guide was an intern and seemed unsure of herself. There was no overview of the property, its purpose, how the animals came to be here, etc. Beyond a few sentences about each breed she expected us to ask any questions for further information. Looking back at our photos we could have learned so much more. The range rovers may be trying to harken back to an African safari ala 1970s, but they are very uncomfortable to climb in and out of multiple times during the tour. If you're over six-feet tall, too bad. It seemed strange that there was no attempt to accommodate such a person in the front seat with the driver. All of that we could have lived with and still given it 4 stars, but when the driver of our rover (the owner?) asked very unprofessional and divisive political questions sprinkled with his own commentary and then lectured on climate change, and showed no thought for innocent people mowed down in a terrorist attack we just about climbed out and asked for our money back. He was quick to point out that he thinks they have the best guest accommodations of anywhere any one of us were currently staying (obviously oblivious that there are million-dollar homes as rentals overlooking the ocean just 20 minutes away). Not sure what in the heck he's trying to do at this place, but YES feeding the giraffes was a highlight. Worth having to endure the other non-animal sanctuary comments? Not for the price, and overall this was a bad memory, especially for my husband's birthday. I think we'll be removing all the mentions of this place in the literature at our nearby ocean-view vacation rental home. Get a clue people, no one wants to talk politics on vacation. Keep it to yourself and do your best to be professional and humble when showcasing your pet projects. read more

We had the most amazing weekend at B. Bryan Preserve in November of 2012! We came with our 2 and 7 year old daughters and our friends brought their two children . We rented the Bridge and Chapel cottages which were right next to each other. The cottages were cozy and beautiful! My 7 year old who is a Little House on the Prairie fanatic was tickled by the old wood stove, the antique décor, gathering eggs in the chicken coop, and harvesting beets from the vegetable garden. It was so magical to be eating breakfast on the porch, enjoying the scenery and watching zebras drink from the pond (where else does that happen?)! The kitchens were well equipped with everything to make nice meals and there were barbeques. Everyone enjoyed the hot tubs which had gorgeous views of the property. The big kids loved roaming around the cottages gathering sticks and bugs and the little ones loved being outside and seeing the animals. The kids all loved the tour. I'm not sure what they liked more, seeing the animals or riding in the vintage Land Rover jeep. Judy let them all have a turn feeding the giraffe and she did a great job educating us all about the different animals. Adults and kids had a wonderful time! I would highly recommend this as a family vacation or a romantic getaway. The Point Arena area is so pretty and offers great hiking. We also visited the lighthouse and went on a nice hike along the bluffs. I can't wait to go back! read more

Went on Christmas Day. Could not have asked for a better time. Cathy, our tour guide who does just about everything and can do everything girl was THE BEST. B Bryan Preserve was the highlight of our trip from San Francisco to Mendocino. We thought we were going to be late due to an accident on Highway 1 (allow extra time!), and Judy was very accommodating over the phone. Luckily, we were on time, and got to see all three types of zebras (you get to actually go inside a zebra's pen!), three types of antelope, and most importantly the giraffes. This place is wonderfully random and unexpected--Africa animals in the middle of the windy northern coast, with animal keepers from Mississippi! Definitely a unique experience. read more

This wildlife preserve is an amazing little treasure in Northern California. I visited with my girlfriends and we had a blast learning about the various animals on the property (AND feeding the giraffes ;) ). The proprieters are a sweet couple and it's clear that they are passionate about these animals. Thoroughly enjoyed Frank's commentary as we were driven through the property as well. We didn't know what to expect on this tour but once we arrived we went in the barn & looked around . Then our tour guide Cathy greeted us promptly at 9:30 & she was an amazing tour guide. Very welcoming & friendly person. We went with our four kids & if you ask them what their favorite thing we did on our vacation , it's the B. Bryan Preserve. We all loved learning about the animals & getting to pet a zebra & feed a giraffe. We were even able to drive out to see the animals. We all learned a lot about the different zebras & giraffes. We will be sure to book a tour again in the future & have already recommended this place to our family & friends. We highly recommend people book a tour . The B. Bryan Preserve is an absolutely fantastic place! On the guided tour (led by the knowledgable and friendly owners), we saw the newly born Grevy's Zebra, fed the beautiful giraffes and learned so much about the rapid extinction of some of the Earth's most gracious creatures. This is an extraordinary place. We loved seeing the animals. Thge accomodations are comfortable, clean and friedly.

Wow! A perfect weekend! (I'm not an easy sell, typically, and my travel partner's nickname is Eeyore.) Vaux le voyage. - CARRIAGE HOUSE: CLEAN, COMFORTABLE: We arrived after dark on Labor Day Weekend. Everything was arranged for us. We had the carriage house, as opposed to either of the two hand-built cottages, which are some distance from the main front house where the proprietors, Frank and Judy, live. The carriage house apartment is upstairs, a fun space under the intersecting angles of the roof and dormers. Both of us are over 6'2", and the roof lines are plenty high. The apartment was clean. If there was one detraction, for me, all weekend, it was that the master bed had a footboard, which isn't ideal for tall people. The second bedroom is small and tight under the roofline, but that didn't affect our visit. - We ate dinner out that night, walking the few blocks into Pt. Arena. We brought so much food, we ended up making dinner "in" the second night. Judy kept telling us about the hen house and fresh eggs. The flock of chickens roam free around the main house area. Sure enough, we found an egg in one of the nests and a few more from a basket hanging in the hen house. Augmented by our own imports, we had a delicious meal in the apartment. The impeccable cleanliness of the kitchen, the utensils, dishes, cookware, appliances, etc. impressed me. - THE PRESERVE: WILD, FASCINATING, EDUCATIONAL, UPLIFTING: The African hoofstock is close by. Scores of zebras and antelopes (and soon giraffes) are kept in pens covering 100+ acres of grassland. That first night, in the misty mist of the dusky dusk, I walked over to the nearest antelopes, a family group of Roan antelope. Just me and them. Wary creatures, moving away from the perceived threat. Guests are free to wander. My friend and I visited the new giraffe house, which is under construction. The formal tour of the Preserve, was done by vintage Land Rover, with Frank initially at the wheel and Judy playing guide. Most of the weekend guests were aboard, eight of us. Judy is knowledgeable, affable, and accommodating, fielding questions from both adults and children. - THE FACILITY: BEAUTIFUL, ACCESSIBLE, RICH: Frank builds the structures himself, with help. He brings in salvage architectural elements, from razed churches and Victorians, and incorporates them into his buildings. The giraffe house has stained glass from a church and multi-paned windows from a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed warehouse. The cottages have similar attention to detail and a home-hewn aesthetic. Frank, a former food biochemist, is happy to talk about his current work. He and Judy welcomed us into their house. Frank gave us a tour of the house, showing off his collection of vintage rock'n'roll poster art and Art Deco lighting. Judy talked about the history of their adventure, which began in Alabama and moved cross-country about 6 years ago. Clearly, their hearts are in it. Eeyore left behind a shirt in the apartment. Judy mailed it to him promptly. - B. Bryan Preserve was everything it should have been. Easy to recommend. Worth a return visit. read more

This place is incredible and a must... imagine waking up in a cozy cabin and deciding to wake your partner to join you for a soak in your private hot tub, while drinking a cup of coffee, to watch the sun rise. The zebras are also awakening, so you will likely hear one of them bray to attract a mate. Later, after waking the kids and preparing breakfast, a rothchild giraffe will greet you from afar as you prepare for a morning bicycle ride to Point Arenas pier. You decide to stop at Frannys on the way back for one of their amazing confections and enjoy it with a cup of tea by your cast iron fireplace in your private, quiet and peaceful, fully equipped cabin. Later in the afternoon you go on a tour of the grounds, and the owners invite your 11-year stepson to ride in the front with them in their vintage safari-style Land Rover truck. You then meet all of the other hoofed African mammals the B Bryan Preserve owners' are dedicated to conserve and preserve. And all of this a mere few hours away from San Francisco. This place is worth every penny, every car-sick kid, is worth every vacation day you can afford! read more
