This was our second stay at Wharf Masters Inn, and it somehow managed to be even better than the first! We spent two nights here celebrating my birthday and our anniversary, and it remains my absolute favorite place to stay on this side of the coast. Karen is such a wonderful host and truly makes you feel right at home from the moment you arrive. She prepared an incredible spread during our stay, including a delicious charcuterie board, flatbread, artichoke dip, and her famous "Slap Yo Mama" gumbo with fresh dipping bread. The name doesn't lie...it absolutely SLAPS! Hands down the best gumbo I've ever had. Room 120 was spacious and comfortable, with an amazingly comfortable bed and the perfect ocean view!! There is nothing better than lying in bed, watching the ocean, and listening to the waves. I also enjoyed a bubble bath with the jetted tub both days, which made for the perfect relaxing getaway. The balcony is nice with tall chairs and a table to enjoy a glass of wine (or three lol) in the evenings. :) If you're looking for a peaceful coastal retreat with exceptional hospitality, beautiful ocean views, and thoughtful touches throughout your stay, I can't recommend Wharf Masters Inn enough. Ok after being here for the weekend Cliff and Karen went out of there way to make our stay very nice the rooms excellent lots to see the coast up is beautiful, nice complementary breakfast between eight and 10 down in their little diner coffee, waffles, yogurt, etc., enough to get you going, beautiful courtyard, where you can watch the local musicians on Friday nights and also order a like dinner. One month ago, we suddenly realized we didn't have family coming for Thanksgiving, so I started trying to find somewhere for three of us (me, hubby and mom) to spend the weekend. We love the NorCal coast, and I cast my net wide because I knew there wouldn't be much available. The Wharf Master's Inn popped up, with the Wharf Master's house - two bedrooms, one bath, small kitchen, living room and private deck - in our price range. We dig Point Arena, so it seemed like kismet. We arrived on Thanksgiving day, in the afternoon. The staff was fantastic at every turn, especially the innkeeper Karen (owner, host with the most, wearer of all hats!) and her front desk associate Vanita (with all the Southern charm). Cleanliness, good beds, abundant towels, quality linens and rocking chairs on the private deck for our beautiful view of the ocean were part of our perfect experience. I pre-booked Thanksgiving dinner at Wharf Master's Wave Lounge, it was delicious. Happy hour snacks on Friday and light breakfast offerings in the morning were nice bonuses. There are many stairs in the Wharf Master's house and all around the property, between that and many walks down to the wharf and back, we definitely got a workout with our vacation! I had a very enjoyable stay here at the Wharf Master's Inn. The inn is located on top of a hill off of Highway 1 and near a wharf that is not crowded. I reserved one of their pet friendly room thinking I would bring my dog with me on the trip, but that didn't happen. The room was spacious, clean, and had a patio. The bed was comfortable, and the staff was friendly. They offer light refreshments late in the afternoon and morning; though you can special order a meal in advance. Their office is only open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. so you will need to plan accordingly if you need service or plan to arrive after 8 p.m. Check-in is at 3 p.m. The town has limited restaurants/services, but food wise, there are two wonderful restaurants at the bottom of the hill and a coffee shop. Because the hotel is built on a hill, most of the rooms will require you to climb up stairs. Not every room has a view and I recommend you reserve from their website instead of third party sellers like Travelocity or Expedia for a suitable room. Beautiful location with awesome ocean views. A real plus is their access to the conservation land behind their inn. We enjoyed hiking on it. Mellow, peaceful atmosphere. Stayed in an ocean view King bed room with balcony. Pretty windy and cool during our stay, but that didn't detract from our experience. The Inn Keepers, Karen and Clifford, are nice folks who are very helpful and welcoming. The weekday rates are a good value. We decided to stay an extra day which was on a Saturday. The rate increased with no value added--so that was disappointing. The room was clean and inviting--nicely decorated in a nautical theme. The one amenity that created a problem for us is the jetted tubs in the rooms. The people above us used theirs and the rumble it created was so loud that we had to leave our room and go outside for an hour. And this was after 8pm in the evening-- inconvenient for us, as we were settling in for the night. ( A suggestion would be to acoustically dampen the sound by dropping the ceilings and putting insulation in the room ceilings on the 1st and 2nd floors.) We walked to the wharf and had the most delicious pizza and fresh organic salad at the restaurant there. Pick your room carefully, as there are stairs and no elevator--which they explain in the room descriptions. All in all, we enjoyed our stay and would stay there again. read more

This stay was utterly fantastic. I desperately needed a chill place to get away and focus on school work without losing my mind. The serenity at this inn was seriously off the charts. Karen, the owner, made sure we had everything we needed, and then some. I even scored some retail therapy in the lobby merch, because, priorities. Our room was clean and comfy, and the jacuzzi tub was pure bliss. The bed was super comfy, but a little creaky, which was kinda funny. The view was gorgeous, and the weather was nice and cool, just what I needed. They served an amazing cup of coffee, along with a yogurt bar, croissants, and fresh fruit for breakfast, because, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. There were also DVDs and board games to spend some quality time with your Peeps, and even lawn games in the courtyard, because, why not? Since my husband discovered this gem of a place around mid-2025, we have come and stayed at The Wharf Master's Inn 3 times in 6 months, we like it this much! We love its location with ocean view, friendly and professional people, jacuzzi-in-room, clean environment, and relaxed atmosphere. When one visits with reasonable expectations about a small-business, one can definitely fall in love with The Wharf Master's Inn. First of all, the location. My husband likes it because it's just the right place to rest at the end of his coastal motorcycle ride from SF/Bay Area (or a break before continuing on northwards). I like it because of the ocean view (from the rooms we chose). We love being able to enjoy jacuzzi in private and anytime of our liking (within reasonable hours). The rooms and public area are clean and pleasant. Equally important reason for us is the people. Karen the hotel owner is not only fun, kind, and full of incredible stories, but she is also professional and hard-working. It's a wonderful bonus that she makes awesome gumbo! Her crew is also very nice and friendly. The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly, and comforting. The view outward is the ocean, but they also have a view inward, and it's the courtyard. We enjoyed playing corn-holes and dart in the courtyard. The landscaping surrounding it is neat and calming. Most importantly, there's a nice landscaped patch for Tilly the turtle whom I've yet had the honor to see. Some interesting places around The Wharf Master's Inn that we plan to explore more during our future stays are the restaurants just below the Inn (a pizza place and a bar with live music on certain days of the week), a few places in town (a very nice pastry shop, a coffee roaster, a pub, and a restaurant), and the trails around the Inn. That said, here are my personal tips on making the most out of a stay at The Wharf Master's Inn: (1) Booking is best made on their own website. Their home website has very detailed and specific description of the rooms, which definitely helped when I needed to consider price, view, size, and accessibility (they don't have elevators). Don't hesitate to call and inquire about a room of your interest when it says so on the webpage; it's a small business with limited hands so certain less-booked rooms are available upon request. (2) Come with reasonable expectations. This is not a corporate run big venture. (3) Their price is definitely reasonable for the quality of the experience one can get within a certain distance in the area. read more

A perfect location! This was a quick overnight getaway for us from Marin County. Our first time staying at Wharf Master's Inn, but definitely not our last. We stayed in Room 123, the furthest out, closest to the ocean. Nothing like sleeping and having the waves lull you to sleep. The room as immaculate, tidy and nicely decorated. Everything you need, fridge, wine glasses and a deck with beautiful views. The weather was perfect this weekend. We couldn't have asked for a better time. My husband and I chose this quaint Inn to stay at for two nights during our 25th anniversary. We were traveling up the coast visiting lighthouses. This Inn Is in close proximity to Point Arena Lighthouse. The owner and host, Karen, treated us like family. The customer service was superb. Any questions or concerns that we had was met with immediate results above and beyond expectations. We even enjoyed the limited cell phone reception. We were able to text but not receive many calls via Verizon. There are hard wired phones in the room in case family does need to reach us in an emergency. It was nice to have that break. We have already started to plan a trip back soon. read more

Came here for my husband's birthday to get away from our busy work life in the Bay Area. This hotel was the cleanest hotel we have ever stayed at on the coast. We were very pleased with the property as a whole, it was very serene. The owners of the property were very welcoming, accommodating and friendly. They do not have a lot of food options, but we did try the gumbo and the charcuterie board, which were both very good. Breakfast options were also really good. We liked that there were games to play, a comfortable smoking area (we take many smoke breaks), and the jacuzzi tub! We will be coming here again instead of going to our normal spot in Fort Bragg. read more

Stayed here a while ago and realized within a few minutes this is not the room I booked and it was quite a downgrade, I went straight back to the front desk and was told I had already signed and couldn't switch rooms and it was bookings fault, when I complained with booking later the owners straight lied and said he offered me a refund. Based on other reviews, I'm sure the one of the owner will jump in here to "correct" this post with a cheery, dismissive response about how lovely the wine and views are, but let's be honest: great views doesn't make up for bad business practices. Instead of replying defensively, I hope this time they simply takes this as feedback and ensures other guests aren't treated the same way. Hope they have a WONDERFUL day! read more

We had a romantic, delightful time on Valentine's day 2026. Even on a major holiday the place was quiet. Our room + balconey had a great view of the stunning harbor and westward to watch the setting sun. It has a garden like feel to get to the rooms through the landscaped courtyard. The owner/hostess made us feel very welcome as we checked in. As the inn is perched on a hillside, the one caveat is parking is limited at the upper elevation closest to where the rooms are at. At multiple levels lower down there is ample parking. But you will have to climb some stairs or follow the upsloping road. There is plenty of hiking in the area. My wife and I have been long term visitors to the Sonoma/Mendocino coast area. We are both Ukiah High grads, so very familiar with the area, having spent a lot of time on the coast over the years (Ukiah is about an hour inland). We had pretty much given up on our former go-to spot in Gualala (about 15 mins from PA) but decided to give Wharf Master's a shot. PA had always been one of those pass through places for us, though we did dine at the restaurant on occasion. Wharf Master's was an awesome find! The place is clean, well maintained, and super friendly. It's not fancy or anything, but clean and comfortable. The owner was just an amazing hostess. Made us feel like visiting friends. We had a relaxing 3 night stay that didn't break the bank. Nice view of the wharf and ocean from the balcony. Decent coffee from the locally owned coffee house at the wharf, fun evening at the Garcia River Casino nearby. Yeah, it's still PA, but we will be back. So glad we found this place. It's a bit of a trek from our home in Auburn, but well worth it. read more

This beautiful and charming property exceeded my expectations! The pictures online do not do it justice. I had the pleasure of staying here for 2 nights/3 days to just relax and disconnect (no cellular signal but they do offer WiFi). I requested one of the remodeled rooms which was such a gem - our room had a beautiful large jacuzzi tub, a fireplace, and a balcony, although, I believe all rooms come with these amenities. What more could we ask for? Everyone was so friendly and welcoming here. The air was so crisp and the weather was perfect, not too hot and not too cold. Wonderful New Years Eve experience in the little gem of a town - Point Arena. Wharfmasters Inn is under new ownership and since the last time we stayed the rooms have been updated. We arrived and Karen walked us to our room. THE VIEW!!! Superbly breathtaking! She turned on our electric fireplace and made sure we knew how to as well. She pointed to a hike along the bluffs and that is what we did first thing -the sunset was spectacular. There is now a little bar, with a happy hour, and food/restaurant area, which was perfect as we are board gamers and were meeting friends and wanted a bigger place to play before heading out for our NYE revelry. I had a glass of wine and my husband a beer and we nibbled on the charcuterie that was out before ordering a salad to split - one glass of wine/beer and the charcuterie were complementary. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and I'm pretty snobby about beds and the jacuzzi tub was such a delight. Listening to the waves crashing and waking up to the sunrise over the pacific - what a powerful New Years experience. We didn't want to leave. New Years day dinner we walked down to Pier Place and had dinner and played more board games - there is also a coffee shop and pizza place (those were closed). It's the description of my favorite inn located in Point Arena, California: Wharf Master's Inn. This was our second stay at the inn, owned and operated by Karen and her husband Cliff--and part of the Arena Cove Historic District dating back to the 1860's. It's a picturesque collection of cozy units built into the oceanside cliff, starting with the main house constructed for the wharf master circa 1870. There are small courtyards and seating areas snuggled between buildings--and full of Calla lilies, wooden sculptures, and unobtrusive fountains that extend the natural ocean wave music rising from the dock below. The town of Point Arena ("Punta Arena") has less than 500 residents, so there are few restaurants. But Karen has a lovely short menu--including the heartiest gumbo this side of New Orleans, available for in-room delivery. Spend time soaking in a bubble bath with a clear view of the sun reflecting upon the ocean. Take a walk down to the water and pick up sea treasures. Grab a bottle of wine in the lobby and dine on a wonderfully balanced charcuterie board in front of the room's fireplace. Sit on the balcony at night to see the sky reveal a wave of stars and the seaside serenade below. This is not a paid testimonial. My son picked this Inn out 7yrs ago during a family trip. We've stayed 3 times. We thought we loved it before...then we came back in Aug of 2025!! Karen is the BEST and the improvements are fantastic. Anything we needed she took care of. The rooms and grounds are great. I spend 3 nights at Wharf Master's Inn to just get away for a long birthday weekend. I had no real plans, no idea what I was going to do once I arrived and other than hoping for clear days (it was July so there are no guarantees with the fog), I had no big hopes or expectations. Wharf Master's Inn is charming. It's away from the road and people and just anything that makes you feel like you're still "too close". The hosts are amazing as well. You know they've got their hands full but you never see that side of it. Always smiling, always available and super accommodating. I was in room 120 and friends were just across from me. My room was clean, bright, spacious, relatively quiet and just what I needed. Friends called and had sparkling wine, a charcuterie board and a bath bomb put in my room before my arrival. I have to say, Karen did an amazing job. The charcuterie was perfect and the bubbles were well chilled. After enjoying a little time on the balcony staring at the water, I used that bath bomb and took a soak. All 3 nights I slept with the sliding door open and enjoyed the sound of the water and the cool breeze. When it got a little too cool, the electric fireplace heater worked great to take the chill out of the room. I had room service for breakfast (great bagel and latke's) and dinner (charcuterie, veggie spirals and pasta). All very good and really reasonably priced. While there I drove to Boonville and Philo for wine tastings and pairings with friends (Pennyroyal Farm has some of the best cheeses I've ever had). I spent a day visiting the lighthouse, tasting some beer brewed in Point Arena, grabbing coffee at Cove Coffee (really good avocado toast) and even taking a nap or two. If you're heading to the area, give Wharf Master's Inn a try. read more

Stayed at the wharf masters last night. What an awesome property. Price was right! Easy check in with the owner working the front desk who also showed me to my room. Nice clean room with a balcony overlooking the cove. Jet tub and shower was a nice option. No smoking on balconies, understandable. Nice stone paved well lit area designated for smokers. We just strolled down to the beach (literally 1 minute walk) plenty of picnic benches. Great place, great stay. We will return. read more

Staying at the Wharf Masters Inn has always been a 5 star experience and so has the surrounding area. My wife and I have been staying here for the last 12 or so years and lately try not to miss the 4th of July weekend. Karen and Cliff whom are the owners and hosts go out of their way to make everyone feel like family. As a guest you can participate in the different games they have in the courtyard, take a one of a kind hike on the ocean bluffs, fish off the pier or just relax on your deck. The Wharf Master offers a few different options for breakfast, lunch and dinner but only at certain times of the year and the food does not disappoint. My wife and I stayed here for a long weekend getaway and loved this place. All the staff (front desk, maintenance, housekeepers) were very nice and helpful throughout our stay. We reserved a "Spectacular Lookout King" room which is on a top floor with a beautiful view of the cove. The room was fairly well appointed and comfortable with a nice balcony to enjoy the view and some wine. We had breakfast and dinner while there and they brought the food to our room, nice and hot, and very tasty! Dining below the Inn is also quite good and prices were reasonable. No need to drive for miles to get good food. Pay attention to the days of the week for restaurant open times, but we had no issues during out Friday - Tuesday stay. We highly recommend it as a terrific getaway spot! read more
