Shanghai style fried noodles, mixed vegetables, and bbq pork
    Dennis H.

Tldr: Cheap, quick chinese takeout. Inconsistent quality and taste Came here a couple times when i succumbed to my chinese food cravings during school at Waterloo. This place is conveniently located in the University plaza, offering take-out chinese food. They offer combos with choices of fried rice and fried noodles (shanghai and chow mein) as the staples, a choice of vegetables, and a selection of meats. In my opinion, the quality and taste of the food here is just ok. The amount of food that they give is not always consistent (also depends on the person that is serving you), and some days the meats are pretty dry and can get pretty salty and greasy. The fried rice and noodles are also quite bland. However, they are pretty speedy with their service, and the price is pretty competitive relative to the other food joints in the plaza as well. If you want a quick bite (kind of like a grab and go type of meal), then you could try this place. But if you're looking for better tasting chinese food, i would suggest looking elsewhere.

    Steam rice combo (6.99)

A new steamtable based restaurant that replaced the old Panda King (which did not do well at all). Both being steatable restaurants, Baba chicken definitely has higher food quality and is attracting a lot of people with its 6.99 special which gets you steam rice with 2 meats and 1 vegetable. Their steam table selections are similar to Mikeys, except they also serve chinese bbq meats (bbq pork/duck) which I assume is one of their biggest attractions considering not many other places around has it. Their food is definitely more authentic than others around. Their bbq pork is not the best I've had but i still get it just cause its bbq pork. The bbq pork quality itself is also a hit or miss since they usually give you the skinniest pieces available first. You the tray of bbq pork have only half fat pieces left than definitely go for it! I persoanlly also really enjoy their crispy chicken. It's like sweet and sour but just sweet. They also serve drinks like hk style milk tea (can add tapioca). Personally have yet to try it but I have seen many people get it.

All of this for $5.65 (second meal in the background not included).

Fast service, good food, very friendly workers. The Shangai noodles always slap, and the baba chicken is goated

The interior is very cute here - the menu is handwritten on a chalkboard and they have stuffed animals on sale at the side. We came here at around 30 minutes before closing time so unfortunately we were only able to get takeout. There was plenty of available seating though and the restaurant was clean and tidy. We decided to order the cold noodles (liang pi) and the yo po noodles which came up to a total of $16. You get to play rock paper scissors with the cashier, and if you win you get 5% off your order. Portions were huge for the price and the food smelled so good! The noodles itself were quite chewy and carried the sauce well. I think both dishes were a tad too oily though, and it also tasted more sour than spicy. I probably won't order these dishes again, but I noticed they serve other interesting dishes on their menu like peking duck pork wraps and pork patties - I might just give it another try when I'm in the area!

Convenient place for a hot and spicy lunch/dinner. Price is slightly more expensive but they also give large portions. Would recommend the standard meal combos over custom orders due to difference in price. Their 麻辣烫(malatang)are a staple, but the pickled cabbage fish casserole left a better impression on me. Though that might be because I had their malatang too many times aha Overall a homey meal, but personally find it a tad expensive for something I could make at home. Would recommend for cold winter nights.

Let's start with the good. Huuuuge Boa's! Easily the biggest I've ever seen. The bun is as good as they come, pillowy soft, yet strong enough to hold all of the ingredients that make up these massive sandwiches. Now as far as the food itself, well, disappointing to say the least. I tried the chicken katsu, crackle belly, and Seoul beef. All were technically flawed in various ways. The chicken katsu was the more enjoyable of the bunch, great on breading and flavor, but the chicken itself was tough and on dry side. The amount of beef in the Seoul beef is beyond generous, and actually tasty. But the kimchi does absolutely nothing to add to this. As far as the crackle belly? My oh my. Pork belly is my thing. I've had more than I could count. None as bad as this. The name crackle implies crispy. This cut of pork was so tough and overcooked with little to no fat, that i started to question if it was even ever from the belly itself. Surely this could not be the norm at boa sandwich bar. Maybe a bad day at the office? I would certainly hope so, because even with mild expectations, Bao sandwich bar falls waaaay short.

Environment: The restaurant is located at the King/University plaza, where there are ample of parking space and really convenient for those taking the bus as well. The restaurant itself is clean, well lit, and has a few seats. It's best to come in a group of 4 of fewer if you plan on dining here. The decor seems to be going for a "bathroom chic" as described by my friend -- "4 stars - delicious food, feels like I'm in a bathroom"! Lol. It's mainly because of the tiles on the wall and the uncomfortable seats. Food: The BOGO special only allowed us to order from their special bowls so we tried the Big Umami (salmon + tuna) and the one with the Duck. Quantity wise the bowl seems to be good value given that it normally costs $15 per bowl. They put a generous amount of toppings on top of the rice and the flavour was good and the fish sashimi was quite fresh. Definitely no watery/soggy texture! The food also looks damn good with lots of colours, which not only is super appetizing but also so Insta worthy!! Service: Basically fast food McDonald like ordering, no table service. When we were lining up they got someone to hand us the big cardboard menu and explained to us how the ordering works. However...they somehow managed to messed up the order. I got the Big Umami with rice and only one of them had rice while the other one was mixed greens :( definitely a little too healthy for me.....
