Great Staff and service. Small Restaurant on a corner of a square. Can be quite busy at times but thats coz they serve good quality food. Very filling and every dish I saw come come out of the kitchen (for our table and others) looks good and fresh. My bf and I are glad we come across this place while on our way to the ferry terminal. Just discovered this place after living in Nanaimo for 20 years. The food was amazing - my sister and I went for lunch on a Saturday and had Black Bean soup (to die for), and Tortilla soup (also delish) as well as tacos - sooo good and all was very filling. The salsa was incredible and they are not afraid to go spicy! Will definitely go back with my husband - he will love it. We chose to sit inside but the deck was a nice option too. I was genuinely impressed by this place! It's a bit small, and in the mall beside where the yelp map shows you, but the food is good! The chips and salsa are house made. They make their own chips! Finally! The salsa is definitely not mild, which I very much appreciated. I had the Del Jardin Burrito - Rice, black beans, lettuce, guacamole, pico, sour cream & cheese. Simply the Best Mexican in Nanaimo! Mexican food is not Tex-Mex and Baby Salsa makes real mexican eats and makes them great. We had the Street Tacos and Tamales. The Tacos were exceptional, not the best I have had but they did taste like my friend's grams made them at home and that warmed my heart and my belly. The Tamales were the best I have had in BC hands down!! The service was great and even when my friend left an article of clothing in the resto the waiter chased down our moving car to return it. Not too sweet, just the right amount of tartness. Yum! Good start. Next was the salsa....usually the killer for Canadian Mexican restaurants. It was excellent. Went on Saturday lunchtime. I noticed 1 of the 2 servers sneezing into her hands, she left soon after. Down to only 1 server for the place. My 4 yr old grandson and I ordered nachos. I thought they'd be quick. 20 minutes or so later they finally arrived, complete with hot peppers which I had to find and remove. They were ok. Salsa is terrible, watery and sour tasting. The nacho chips rather tasteless. The sour cream and guacamole were good. We attempted to have dessert but the 4 year old couldn't sit the extra 20 minutes and we had to leave before they arrived. From the rice, salsa, and tortillas. I appreciated how large their menu was and how many options they had for vegan and vegetarians... they obviously put a lot of effort in catering to vegan Mexican food in additional to traditional meat forward dishes. We were surprised to find Baby Salsa nestled in Harewood in the corner of the mall parking lot. Upon purusing the menu we were even more surprised that they actually offer a lot of dietary options for vegans, vegetarians, pescatarians, carnivores, and of course for those on the ever popular gluten free diet. The food itself was fairly standard as far as Mexican/Tex Mex goes. They have queso which is as Tex Mex as it gets. They also have some fairly authentic Mexican dishes like tortilla soup and mole. Most of the mains come with the same re-fried beans and Mexican rice so keep this in mind if you want to order family style/sharsies. The server was very nice and the meal came quickly. The biggest bonus for us was that they allow you to bring in your own bottle of wine and they charge a nominal corking fee. They also serve alcohol. Really very civilized. read more

The best, and I mean the best, Mexican on the Island!! I have no idea why the reviews are so poor here when this is honestly our favorite restaurant in town. Homemade salsa, fresh authentic dishes and fabulous service. It has every other "Mexican" restaurant beat for pricing and for flavor in Nanaimo. I know several out-of-town people who make the trek just to eat at Baby Salsa, and it's well worth it. This place is disgusting. I don't think the owners could ever have even been to Mexico. Also do not ever order fish dishes here especially if they claim to be halibut. 1st time there - ordered halibut and I was brought 1/2 halibut and 1/2 snapper. But with the halibut laid over the impostor fish to try and disguise it. It was gross anyways and I couldn't even eat it. 2nd time ordered halibut and as soon as I took a bit I was gagging. It had spoiled and was rotten and fishy and oily. Absolutely revolting. Other dishes ordered here ha e been equally inedible. Literally some of the worst food I've ever had. Authentic Mexican food, best Tortilla Soup. Two in our party loved their burritos (the Sante Fe and Del Mar ) and my son loved the Just cheese Quesadilla. I was alright with the Holey Mole but found the guacamole had too much lime and because I smothered my burrito in excitement, I was disappointed.
