I've always liked back east brews on tap at local CT restaurants so when my friends wanted to meet up at the actual brewery I was so excited! Upon entering there are various types of seating from patio to indoor to private areas for parties. I really liked the QR code method to buy food made in house. I can say I was very impressed with my steak tacos! Such a perk at a brewery! When ordering a brew I was a bit disappointed I couldn't get a flight but they did offer smaller glasses to taste multiple brews. Icecream man is always a fan favorite and a classic so I opted for that. But my friend got their icecream man topped with a berry beer and she loved it! I was in the area for business. My only regret is we waited until the last night we were in town to check this place out. We didn't try the food but based on their beer quality, the food would be equally epic. Generally when you stop into a brewery you'll try a few beers and find one or two you like. I haven't been to the Back East Brewery in years. Last night I stopped by to meet a friend. This brewery makes me feel like this town is much larger then it is, with roads accessing this brewery, I've never noticed before. This brewery is pretty big. There was a private event when I first walked inside. They have plenty of seating options, inside, outside on the patio, as well as on the lawn. They have live music, but unfortunately by the time I arrived the band was wrapping up. I got one of the sour beer cocktails, Maine Squeeze. This is a grapefruit, lime sour with blueberries and blueberry juice mixed in. This looked incredible and tasted even better. It was tart, but sweet and so refreshing. We sat outside on their patio where we chatted and enjoyed our beers, and we stayed until closing. read more

Back East has been around for a long time however this was my first time visiting. Very cool place. I could tell they were preparing for May 4th (May the 4th be with you) an homage to star wars. Looked like it will be a fun time. My friends and I enjoyed the different beer we chose. I had a back east light. We also ordered the pretzel bites and enjoyed them. Back East Brewery is one of my favorite breweries in Connecticut. The vibes are chill, the space is beautiful, and the outdoor seating area is such a win. There are comfy chairs perfect for soaking up the sun, and a shaded section if you need a break from it. Inside, the space is just as great, with thoughtful updates over the years, including the addition of a full kitchen (huge win!). I meant to take a photo of the chicken tenders, but they disappeared before I had a chance. Seriously, they were that good. As always, the beer selection is top-notch. I tried the Blast Off Close Encounters (DIPA. I believe it was 11% ABV), and even a half pour was more than enough. They also have a great menu if you're in the mood to sample a flight and find your new go to. Kids, babies, and families all blended in perfectly, and there's even video games and a Nintendo if you're feeling nostalgic. It's a big enough space that it never feels cramped, and the energy is always just right. Shoutout to Ice Cream Man, which is easily one of my favorite beers and the one that got me hooked on craft beer in the first place many years ago. If you're new to breweries or looking to explore something beyond the basics on tap, this is the place. The staff is amazing as always. Super friendly, knowledgeable, and always ready with samples or solid recommendations based on what you like. If you're into craft beer, Back East Brewery is a must visit in Connecticut. This review is specifically about Greg. His behavior made us extremely uncomfortable, and when confronted, he became defensive and hostile. Note to the owner: unless Greg's demeanor and attitude improve significantly, it would be in the company's best interest to remove him from customer-facing interactions. My husband and I visited this brewery for the first time around 4:30 PM. It was slow, and as experienced brewery-goers, we asked about flights so we could decide which beers we might want as full pours. We were helped by a woman with short blonde hair who was friendly, knowledgeable, and exactly what you want in a customer-facing role. She explained that while flights are not offered, she was happy to provide small samples to help us decide and assured us it was no problem. She also explained that half pours were available. She poured five small samples for us. My husband chose a half pour of Lil Lager and a half pour of Oktoberfest, and I ordered an Athletic NA. We also ordered pretzel bites, which we were told had to be rung in separately--unusual, but fine. Shortly after receiving our drinks, I noticed that all half pours were listed at a flat rate of $5, even though a full 16oz Lil Lager was only $4 and the 16oz Oktoberfest was $7. I mentioned this to the woman helping us, and she agreed it didn't make sense. She told us she would charge us $2 (a soda price) for the Lil Lager half pour, which we felt was fair and reasonable. This agreement was clearly communicated and understood. At this point, Greg abruptly inserted himself into the interaction, asking if we were done and demanding our card, despite the fact that we had just received our drinks and were still waiting for food. He had not been involved in our transaction at all. His interruption was unnecessary, uncomfortable, and disruptive, especially given that the woman assisting us was more than capable of handling everything. When Greg questioned her about our tab, she explained the pricing adjustment she had already agreed upon with us. Greg dismissed her explanation and overrode her decision. He rang us up and charged $5 for the half pour of Oktoberfest, $4 for the half pour of Lil Lager, and the full $5 for my Athletic--completely disregarding the agreement made with us and undermining his coworker in front of customers. His actions felt deceptive, disrespectful, and violating, not only toward us but toward his colleague as well. By this point, the entire experience had soured. When our food finally arrived, we just wanted to leave. As we passed Greg on our way out, he told us to "have a good night." I told him directly that he had handled our transaction incorrectly. He became immediately defensive and interrupted me repeatedly, insisting he had done us a favor by charging $4 instead of the $5 half-pour rate. This completely ignored the fact that we had already agreed--clearly and openly--with his coworker on different pricing, which he knowingly overrode. This was not about the money; it was about principle, respect, and basic customer service. When I told him the experience was awful and that I planned to leave a negative review, he told me to "go right ahead," raised his voice as we were leaving, and falsely accused us of having "20 tastes." This accusation was inappropriate, untrue, and hostile. Greg demonstrated a complete lack of customer service skills, poor judgment, and an inability to understand the basic goal of a brewery: allowing customers to experience the product so they want to purchase more of it. Instead, he dominated his colleague, alienated customers, kept inaccurate tallies, and made unwarranted assumptions. The entire interaction was uncomfortable, unprofessional, and frankly bizarre. If this establishment is going to hold small tastes against customers, then flights should be offered for purchase. As it stands, the environment felt unwelcoming and inhospitable. We will not be returning, and I will be sharing this experience with friends, family, and neighbors. This was, without question, one of the worst customer service experiences we've had at a brewery. read more

Over the past year, I've discovered just how many great breweries one can find in Connecticut, and Back East certainly ranks high on that list. They easily accommodated our large group even on a busy Saturday afternoon. The beer selection offers something for everyone. I would have been content to spend the entire afternoon here drinking their peanut butter stout. My only disappointment was that they do not offer flights, but that disappointment was easily pushed aside by ordering half-pours of several beers. The atmosphere was very festive too. On this particular day, there was a food truck in the parking lot too (Fat City Kid, separate review) serving "all the foods" that you would want to have with your beer. Cans of most of their beers were available for purchase in the refrigerated case, and for any of which they were sold out, they were willing to provide you with growlers. You have to drive to the backside to get to the entrance. They have plenty of outdoor seating and indoor seating as well. The servers were knowledgeable of their products and it was easy to order. I ordered a few IPAs and enjoyed all of them. They have other options as well. I'm not a big sour beer fan but my party enjoyed it. There was a food truck outside next to the building. Fun, mid sized brewery with a great wait staff and large beer menu. This is a solid brewery in that they have something for everyone. The snacks are just ok, but they supplement that with rotating food trucks and we come for the beer and setting anyway. Ice cream man is a solid IPA and their other flavors are fun including Double Scoop or Bubble Scoop, Triple Scoop, lil Scoop, etc. they have some great bottled and aged selections as well. Overall, great little place that always treats its customers right. The brewtenders are well versed on their products and super attentive. Came here for an event. Parking is located in the rear of the building. The entrance is also located in the rear of the building as well. There is plenty of seating both outside and inside. I spent most of my time in the back room for an event. The inside area was spacious and accommodated our group of close to 40 with no issues. There is even a small area filled with merch to purchase. I'm not a big beer drinker but there were other options available which I appreciated. Service was quick and everyone was very friendly. read more

I routinely do beer tourism when I am out of town for work. As this one was a half mile from our customer, I figured it would be a good spot to check out. From the outside, it does not look like much, but once you get inside, you see how large the place really is. A great number of tables, a lengthy bar, and a nice outdoor patio with gas heaters to keep warm (it was a bit chilly that night. I did not see food inside, but they had a pizza "truck" in a surplus army vehicle (did not partake as we had dinner planned out a bit later). The big question is "how is the beer"? Typical hazy IPAs like most breweries in America these days. Nice job at the style (what, a good NEIPA in NE?). Good enough, I grab two four packs and brought some back with me (drank some and gave some to my boss, as well). The Unicorn Farm and Rakautra were both hits with my beer share group. If I lived in the areas, I would gladly return. If I get on this client, I will, as well. Overall a great experience. read more

The number of breweries in Connecticut is (mostly) growing, but since it opened about ten years ago, Back East has continuously improved and grown and is hands-down one of the best breweries in the state at this point. They opened a new taproom directly next to where their old space was. What was once small and kind of felt like a dentist's office waiting room is now spacious and bright and gorgeous. This also gives them more space to brew, which was very much needed given how much they've blown up since they released beers like Ice Cream Man. Speaking of which, they've also opened two checkouts: one for draft pours and one for can sales, because when they have a special release, the line can get pretty long for can sales. Onto the beers. They've got an extensive selection, and when I was there, I remember numerous IPAs (West Coast and NE), a few lagers, a Berlinerweisse, some stouts. Nice change from a lot of local breweries that are pretty much only IPAs at this point. Additionally, they've got some snacks but, but they also have a great food truck schedule when you're looking for something more substantial. Overall, definitely a brewery to check out in Connecticut, especially in the Hartford area. For sure try the Ice Cream Man as it's become what they're really known for, but everything I've ever had is delicious. read more

WOW...updating this review was well overdue! Back East has remained a great brewery since my prior review almost 8 years ago. It has significantly changed since then fore sure, and is more worth a visit than ever! More beer, more space, mor hangout potential. Stop on by! (I should note that I'm slightly biased here, as I know one of the owners, but I have no personal financiall interest in the business, and will keep this review as honest as possible.) Venue - They've expanded several times since my latest review, and now offer a ton of clean, well laid out indoor and outdoor seating. The bathrooms are nicely sized and clean, parking is fairly plentiful, and they also have the ability to setup private reserved space. Lastly, it's worth noting there's ample space to keep your social distancing game on par! Beer - Back East brews several different types of beer, including, but not limited to IPAs, IIPAs, New England IPAs, blond ales, stouts, brown ales, pilsners, berliner weisses, etc. While they have many great beers on the board, their Ice Cream Man IPA is probably the most sought after and is certainly a well known CT favorite, so I'd snag a glass of that if it's on tap during your visit. ...after that maybe dabble a bit. They offer a broader variery of in house brewed beers than most breweries. Cans - Check out the can sales area on your way out for some to go goodies! Seriously, stop by. They'll have something you'll like, and it's a nice space. I know I'll be back at Back East soon, though in order to go back to Back East I actually have to go a bit back west. read more

I was blown away by the extensive renovations they've done and the space, both inside and outside, is absolutely stunning! The beer was just as excellent as I remembered and I loved that the Square Peg Pizza truck was on site on this particular day because there is no better combination than great beer and perfectly cooked pizza. This is one our go-to breweries and the more I visit it, the more I appreciated this place. The bartenders are all great and this time it was Liz that shined. The selection of drinks is good and the prices very reasonable. Usually we bring some snacks to nibble on, but Back East now has a kitchen. We tried their appetizers - the nachos that were different and could have had more toppings on them. In our group, we also tried pretzel bites and the Meditation platter that had hummus and the not so liked falafels. The menu probably needs some tweaking to match the top-notch drinks and because the kitchen is new, just slightly affected my rating (at least for this time). read more

I stopped by here this past Thursday afternoon by myself for some after work drinks. They have a somewhat weird parking situation where you park in the back and then walk a not too short distance around to the front in order to enter the taproom. I arrived at shortly at 5 PM and the place was already packed and there was a line. As a matter of a fact I had to wait about 10 minutes or so before I could even order. I didn't see much of the inside but they did have a small bar and plenty of seating, both high top tables and couches. They also had a cooler in the corner which had a number of their beers for sale. In addition to the indoor seating they also had plenty of outdoor seating complete with picnic tables and Adirondack chairs but it was too cold on this day for me to sit out there. As I often do whenever I visit a new brewery, I went with a flight here. At Backeast Brewing, you get to choose 4 of their 17 on draft beers for $7. To make things even more complicated they have the #5, #16 and #21 rated beers on Draft Magazines top 50 IPAs in the USA. Sadly I didn't see that before I ordered and only ended up with one of the 3. In any case I decided to go with the Tony goes Dancing Double IPA, You wanna peach of me? IPA, Unicorn Farm IPA and Ice Cream Man NE IPA. The first beer that I tried was Tony goes dancing DIPA which started off smooth before finishing with citrus and a huge dose of hops. Second was the You wanna peach of me? IPA which was a little sweeter on the start before getting into that ipa flavor although not too much. Up third was the Unicorn farm ipa which had a little sweetness at the start and finish with the perfect amount of hoppiness in between. Last but certainly not least was the Ice cream Man IPA which started off smooth before the hops kicked in and had a finishing taste of creamsicle just as the menu described. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in the future. I enjoyed all of the beers that I tried here and actually can't wait to come back again and try even more. read more

This was our second brewery of the day. We ended up sticking it out the rest of the day here because we really loved the ambience of the place. It was a jazz band there, which was different and there was a lot of seating outside and end. There was also a lot of dogs there, which I always like to see as I'm looking for places to bring my dog to typically we got some appetizers off of a lunch truck that was there, they don't serve their own food, but they do have a rotating food trucks. The second spot on a quick tour through Bloomfield's breweries its been a while since I have stopped in and was excited by the changes that had happen there since the early days of them establishing themselves. Pulling in from the road I saw a bustle of activity outside as people enjoyed live local music and games with drinks in hand soaking the summer air. Inside thy have expanded from the few barrels that they use to have to the now couches and bar tops that people could enjoy their drinks while relaxing after a hard day at work. The last time I was there, there was a line for their beers and glad to see they had either been more efficient in how they pour their concoctions or I was late to the party, either way I was able to step up and view the menu for a more in-depth description of what has been brewing in their steal containers while a draft display showed the list on a bigger screen. The IPA that they had created were the rave as I overheard big accolades for their IPAs that I had to try a few samples before filling up my growler to take back home for my dad and I. Glad to see that both Back East and Thomas Hooker continue to grow and expand in both flavor and following. read more

You really can't go wrong with free beer tastings, and it is a major plus that Back East has many stellar options to choose from. With a bit of time to kill, Tim M. and I hung out on a Friday afternoon and took part in the 5 free tastings. Each one was unique and above average. You can definitely identify beers to drink and purchase in the future based on how different yet good each of their beers is. And the list rotates, so it's definitely worth coming back. Definitely a skewed male, skewed older crowd. But the vibe is chill. I wish there was a little more ambiance, but with the bright lights, it feels like a bright basement with comfy seating. I was one of the first who showed up, for the tapping of an authentic barrel-tapped Summer Ale, which means they didn't ass any carbonation. It was expectedly not as sparkly as the average beer, but its flavor could not be denied. Very fresh, light, and just enough hops to satisfy the IPA-drinker in me. read more

Situated in an suspecting commercial/industrial office park. I actually drove past, then a double take corrected my oversight. With ONLY 2 hours remaining to today's tasting my friend Wil & I wasted no time getting inside. Free samples, really? "Hey now! Hark thy Angels!" Not being too greedy and seeing 8 on tap, we went straight for their new release Rakautra. Oh my, the citrus aroma and hoppy flavor knocked my socks off. Really! The bar was then set and we moved onto BEB's Winterfest, Misty Mountain IPA, Porter, Imperial Stout. All were great. The staff and clientle were a pleasure to mingle with and hear numerous other journeys of fellow beer lovers. The Rakautra won 4.75 out of 5 and Five 6-packs came home for the Holidazes. read more

Broken wobbly toilet aaa the first issue. So as soon as i walk in i want to use the bathroom. The toilet is not sealed right and it tilts over HARD when i sit down. That right that is terrible. We get ALL flights for each beer and it cost $14 not bad. Each beer is unique in taste not one is the same i promise that. Problem sitting inside there is no room it's super small and gets crowded fast so we go outside. The tables they have are large spindles stack on top of each other NOT bolted down you don't know how many times we almost knocked our flights over! They didn't have basic tables outside. I then think of when it's winter time how do you sit inside? Was not GPS friendly its right before the Dunkin' Donuts on the right of you pull up to the 4 way intersection you passed it. This was stop #3 and a wonderful way to end our Yelp Day Trippers Excursion. Thanks to the co-owner Tony for opening up the brewery for us on a Sunday afternoon, providing us with our group with a private tour and tasting of their Misty Mountain IPA (a favorite), their Back East Ale, Porter, and Winderfest. Although Back East has only been opened for 2 years I see great things for this company in the future due to the owners love of the craft of brewing beer and the fact that their brews are so darn tasty. I always say that coming to a brewery is the best way to find out the brewers philosophy as well as to (usually) try their beers without having to commit to a 6 pack - as there is nothing worse then getting home and being suck with something that you "might like". That is not the case here as each one of their varietals I tried was distinct and refreshing - especially the Winterfest which was a red ale with wonderful local honey notes at the end. My second favorite was the Misty Mountain IPA - at 7% abv this one is definitely a sipping beer! I will definitely be back in the future to purchase some freshly brewed beer - especially when the Pallet Mallet becomes available again! read more

Their IPA is pretty light on the hops though so if you aren't a fan of IPA and hoppy beer, this one might be for you. They sell some of their brews in growlers and others in 6 packs of cans.
