Best brewery I've been to so far in the Hartford area and I've been to at least a dozen. Unique variety. Tastes like top notch homebrew. Their lighter beers have complex subtle flavors where most breweries would just have token light beers for non craft beer drinkers. Nice outdoor space and a whole food menu. Bartender calls it "Baskin Robbin's of Beer" and he'll give you as many samples as you want to help you decide. read more

There's nothing really to not like about this place. Plenty of tables, an outdoor patio, and a kitchen with a nice menu choice. Oh yeah - and the beer is good, too, with a nice selection. The beer service has always been good, as well. On my latest visit it seemed like it took a very long time to get our food - not sure what the deal was there. But it's usually not an issue. Great little brew pub off the beaten path in Bloomfield. Went w a friend to meet two friends to see another friend who had a gig singing and playing guitar. First time at this place, and it was well worth it. Large selection of craft beers and ales, reasonably priced. Food menu was varied, and included one size pizza. The table shared two apps; totchos and pretzel bites (which came with two excellent dipping sauces), and I also ordered the special pizza (sausage, broccoli rabe, peppers). Everything was really good. Pizza on the thin crust side, and had a kick to it. Note that there is no table service. Order food at the "bar", you get a text when it's ready, and pick up at the "food ready" window. Not a big deal...just be aware in case you're expecting something else. Entertainment by Marc Brunetti was awesome. Really good voice, eclectic repertoire, plays in a lot of local pubs in northern CT (as well as southwestern MA). What a great space! The layout can seat quite a few people comfortably, and they have a back room available for larger functions. They have a most satisfactory variety of beers. Their merchandise is fun to browse. The food portions are huge, and orders come out quickly. Flights are very reasonably priced (4 pours for $10). They have $2 off pints and then food specials. They have a great selection of beers and the food, especially the pretzel bites, are tasty. Now the beer, it's good. Need I say more? It's a brewery lol. I personally loved the limited edition Thicc AF. It's a dark stout. The atmosphere: So I sauntered in on a Friday after work. We were on spot number 4 because everywhere else was packed. My coworker and I hate crowds where we feel like it's fight to the finish for a drink. This place was the right amount of busy where tables were pretty full but the two separate bars helped disperse the crowd throughout the venue. A group was kind enough to offer us a few chairs at their table and we ended up leaving with new friends. You order your food at the bar and they text you when it's ready to pick up at a window. Thomas Hooker Brewing Company is a craft brewery that opened in Bloomfield, Connecticut in 2007. It was founded by Curt Cameron. The brewery actually has its origins with a brewpub called Trout Brook Restaurant and Brewpub that opened at the Spaghetti Warehouse Building in 1996. Eventually the brewpub would start a brewery-only operation called Thomas Hooker Ales and Lagers in 2003. This new division was named for Trout Brook's most popular beer: Thomas Hooker Ale (named after the founder of Hartford). By 2006, Curt Cameron and his business partners bought out the rights to the Thomas Hooker name and a brand new brewing facility opened in Bloomfield the following year. Not only is Hooker Brewery one of the oldest breweries in the state, but it was probably the first one to give customers a taproom experience. They had success early on with offerings such as their Blonde Ale and Hopmeadow IPA. In addition to brewing their own beer, they also contract brewed for other smaller breweries around the state. A secondary location, Thomas Hooker Brewery at Colt, opened at the old Colt Firearms Building in Hartford (to much acclaim) and features a small kitchen. As current beer trends have changed over the years (rise of popularity in hazy New England IPAs, sours, etc), Hooker Brewery has continued to add new interesting beers to their rotation. A full kitchen that serves pizza, sandwiches and various small plates was added to the Bloomfield facility in 2020, and a new live venue for comedy shows and live music (dubbed 'Hooker Live') opened in Hartford in late 2021. Hooker Brewery was one of the first breweries that I ever visited in person. My first visit was in September 2013, at a time when craft beer was only just catching on in Connecticut and there were only a handful of breweries in the state. At that time, Hooker's taproom was easily the largest that I had seen. After getting a nice tour of the brewing facility, my wife and I were treated to some samples of their various brews (some of which they don't even make anymore). I must applaud Hooker Brewery for updating their beer rotation and improving their recipes throughout the years as beer trends have changed in the state and other older breweries have gone the way of the dodo. My current favorite offerings of theirs would have to be "#NoFilter" (New England IPA), "Super Duper Double Citra" (Double IPA) and "Golden Nymph" (Double IPA). I haven't been to Hooker since they added a kitchen, but I look forward to getting back there soon. read more

We have been over to the Colt location and wanted to visit the main brewery. I had some tour tickets that I'd gotten in a raffle (let's not talk about how long ago) and Phil let me trade those in for flights of beer and took our little group of 3 on a walk about out in the brew room. They have great merchandise available (got myself a new favorite long sleeve tee) and a pizza window right inside so you can eat pizza and drink beer - nothing wrong with that! I cannot say enough positive things about our experience, hosting a private event with Thomas Hooker!! From start to finish, the staff we worked with made the experience so positive and so easy. The staff member we worked with to set up the event, Lisa, was responsive, helpful and kind - going above and beyond to answer our questions and accommodate our requests. The private room was set up beautifully, and the projector and sound system was a major bonus. The staff working that day (Sat 8/30) was extremely attentive to all of our guests and our party needs, and we did not have to lift a finger doing anything to set up or clean up. The bartender, Dylan, was incredible throughout the entire afternoon and evening, and so many of our guests specifically commented on his service and attention to detail. The food was delicious and the kitchen / other brewery staff fulfilled all of our requests for the day. It could not have been a more perfect event. If you're looking for somewhere to host, a private event look no further. It's easily the most affordable and nice space in the area (When we were quoted on the price, we truly thought it was going to be too good to be true, but this place really is just that great!) Hooker has been around for years and it's only gotten better and better. From a small brewery in a big building, to expanding in the building, opening a second location, opening a kitchen, and opening space at the dog rescue next door, they just keep growing, and none of it is bad. They even brew a special beer for the local minor league baseball team. They do a 3-5 happy hour Monday through Friday, as well as food specials in the beginning of the week: Monday BOGO pizza, Tuesday burger and a pint, Wednesday wing Spanish. Oh, and did I mention they're a brewery that's open every day? They have live music, comedy events, a patio, and are active in the local community. If you've never been, check Groupon first for a great deal on flights that also includes some decently nice beer glasses to keep (full size). I got a flight of 6 plus the 2 keepsake glasses for $7.40 total. He shoots, he scores! Plenty of seating both inside and out and lots of merch if the advertising game is your dealio. They make lots and lots of different beers here and most people should be able to find at least one beer they like, especially you IPA lovers. I tried three different IPA's and liked their No Filter (7% abv) so much that I took a 4 pack of canned pints with me for the road. Decent haze, super juicy. Easy, easy drinking. 4 packs were like 12 bucks I think? Totally reasonable. If I didn't already drink so much craft beer I would have bought two 4 packs for sure. Really, really enjoyed this brew. Not a ton of parking out front, so on this 70 degree and sunny Saturday in April, there were at least 15 cars parked along the side of the road. Just be ready for that...you might not want to drive your Lambo. Leave it in the garage and Uber it Hot Shot. No food, but you can bring your own or get delivery. Most pints run 6 bucks for a full pour. They do take credit cards. WiFi is strong and free, just like 'merica. Great brewery. Go get yourself some beers there Sparky. read more

Covid-era review: my first trip to Hooker Brewery (Bloomfield/Hartford lime) was a drive-thru experience as Hooker has several batches of beer about to hit expiration. To get rid of them, Hooker sold these beers in $10 gallon jugs (milk jugs donated by Guida's), donating the proceeds to Dog Star Rescue. We had to call ahead to reserve our order, and it looks like the rest of Greater Hartford did too! The drive through line ran behind Hooker, with pickup by the brewery doors, and when we left the line was down Granby Street! Our call-ahead order included Peanut Slayer, part beer, part dessert, that reminded me of Alvarium Clusternutter. It was smooth, dark, and nutty; maybe a stout for people who don't normally drink stout. Hop Meadow was a citrusy, forest-y IPA--quintessential NE IPA, and weird but still tasty from a plastic milk jug. Blonde Ale, I've had in cans, and it probably pairs with everything. The crew outside who flagged us in all had masks, and used radios to call ahead, and our order was loaded quickly. Hooker's having another Dog Star drive thru 5/16, so order ASAP, and try to go early. You won't miss the flags or Dog Star trailer (or as we left, the line going around the block!). It's wasn't the usual brew pub visit, using a drive-thru line, but the cause was good, the price right, and the beer tasty. Even if there is no seating just standing and enjoying great beer with friends is so fun at Thomas Hooker! Flights & growlers are relatively inexpensive which is an added bonus! In 1633, preacher Thomas Hooker left his native England and sailed to the New World to settle in Boston. But in Boston, he found some of the same suppression of the Puritans that he found in England. So what did he do? He bailed again, but this time instead of sailing the Atlantic, he left on foot and led about 100 settlers for 100 miles to the southwest and founded the Connecticut Colony in 1636. His legacy includes the title of "the Father of Connecticut". Fast forward some 367 years later, when his name became synonymous with something else- some really good beers. Founded in 2003, the Hooker Brewery is located in an industrial neighborhood in what looks like a factory building. We walked in today for a few flights and ended up sharing a table and gabbing with a long-time family friend and her friend. The thing that struck us all was exactly how many beers Hooker had on tap today. At least ten total I'd say, with some on the taps in the main tasting room and some on the taps in the big front room. I went with Nectar of the Goats (4.5 ABV), a Hefeweizen, the Chocolate Truffle Stout (7.1 ABV), and an Imperial Porter (8.7 ABV). The Nectar of the Goats is a nod to Hartford's new minor league baseball team - the Yard Goats, whose logo appears inside the Beer's logo. I didn't care for it as much as I did my next three choices. I loved the Hefeweizen, Stout and Porter. The Stout and Porter were terrific. The Stout included some cocoa powder from Munson's Chocolates and the Porter had coffee and chocolate in there. They were both outstanding. The tasting experience at Hooker Brewery was quite enjoyable - lots of tables and chairs and TV's and some upholstered furniture to lounge about and sip your suds. They also have a company store to buy your souvenirs, cases, and get your growlers filled. We had a really nice visit here. read more

Love always coming to thIs brewery and haven't been there in a while I was glad to see that the place had been upgraded with the indoor arrangements with a full tap room in both the front and rear area. It was a welcome site to see. A quiet Friday I can assume it's because the website is a little misleading with hours only going to 5pm but with the Friday being quiet I was able to get a growler filled with some local concoctions that they have been brewing in the test room. I frequent the Colt Building Tap room but it was nice to return to the roots of the local CT brewery. With some people outside and people inside with TVs on the walls and the gift store nearby, you could walk around enjoying some of their summer special brews along side their usual favors like their Watermelon ale that is a unique favor for Hooker Brewery. With many different events through the months, you should be following all that Thomas Hooker Brewery has to offer. read more

I've been to Hooker Brewery a few times, most recently last night for a HYPE event. I love that there's always something new to try and the staff is always, always friendly. Maybe it's because I actually stopped to talk to the two who were pouring exclusively for us (hi Jen and Miller!) but they took the time to get to know my taste in beer and recommend what they thought I'd like the most, both in their own beers (Down the Gose is my new favorite) and with other breweries. It's a HUGE location, mostly open to standing room, with a few broken-in couches in the front room aka Visitor's Center. You can get a quickie tour with a sample or two of whatever is brewing and an inside look at Phyllis and Lucille (the filling/labeling machines). I'll be interested to see if they hold onto this location when/if their new DoNo Hartford location opens or if they find a way to preserve the murals on their walls and bring them along. read more

My sister-in-law bought me a groupon for a beer flight, which includes a brewery tour. I called beforehand to see how it works. The tours are on Saturday, any time. No advance reservation needed. You show up and just wait for them to announce the next tour (based on supply and demand). I was very surprised to know that there was a brewery in CT. We parked in the back. Walked in through the side entrance and was kind of confused on where to go next. Walked right into the brewery and the back bar. Decided to walk a little farther and was surprised to find a front bar with some seating area and also a brewery shop off to the side. The bartenders were all really nice. For my beer flight, I ended up getting blonde, brewtus, red, and munich. Blonde was my favorite, but then again I like light beers that are less hoppy. While I was there, a older gentleman with a retired veteran hat approached the bar with his wife and ordered their drinks. Our bartender poured the beverages and said "It's on us. Thank you for your service, sir." My heart literally melted. It was such a sweet gesture! Later on, they made an announcement that the tour would happen in the next 5 minutes and to wait out back (on the brewery side). Our tour group was small (4 customers, one tour guide) but our tour guide was very thorough. Told us the history of the brewery, about Thomas Hooker, the process of beer making, etc. Overall it was a very enjoyable experience and was glad to be able to do something a little different in CT. read more

Thomas Hooker is a pretty nice brewery. The staff is very friendly and honest with you. I tried a flight and they gave me another free sample of a different beer that I had wanted to try. This was greatly appreciated. I'm definitely a beer snob and I love my IPA's, so the unfiltered IPA is amazing, as well as their grapefruit IPA. I do like stouts as well and I'm very picky with them, while Thomas hookers was not my favorite stout, it was much lighter and less thick. I loved how the brewery offered multiple tours while we were there, while I personally did not participate it just shows that the staff knows what they are talking about. They were also very helpful in the decision between buying cans or getting a growler. The seating room is definitely large enough to add more tables or couches, as well as games, which is something I would definitely try to tell them to work on, but standing at the bar is still fun and it was such a great time being there! read more

This is a modern beer brewery. They get a 4 because they taste in plastic. It was also very cob webby and dusty at shoulder height and higher. The beer was good and the tastings weren't expensive. My favorite was the Nectar of the Goats. It was nice soft pale ale. I also enjoyed the bandwagon, an IPA that had chocolate notes. There were signs up for beer and yoga which looked cool. Bring your yoga mat and for a few you can taste after yoga! So I get the feeling they are doing some fun innovative stuff there. Have enjoyed their beers from afar in cans for past two years. A real treat being able to sample their beers, fresh on draft. Also the food menu is simple and well executed. We had the grilled chicken sandwich with sautéed spinach, grilled onions and pesto - well executed on a fresh kaiser roll. Traditional pizza with Caesar salad was also yummy and well executed. Masks are required and we sat outside under a tent in fresh air with well spaced out tables. Staff was friendly and happy to make recommendations. Sitting outside is fine there are tables with umbrellas to give you shade. The seating inside however was not good there were only a few high chair tables plus bar seating. The rest of the sitting area was all used ripped up couches. We looked at the couches and avoided them as they looked pretty dirty. Dogs are welcome here and it's clear some of the ripped the couches. When you get flights they serve them in plastic cups.....now that left a bad taste in our mouth really plastic cups? This isn't a college party. The flights were SUPER affordable though $4 for 4 flights! The beer WAS GOOD flavorful and original. The address was GPS friendly parking is on the side of the road so be careful to not get blocked in. Would i ever come back? Went for their 1st and 3rd Friday open house. Basically $10 gets you a bunch of small samples, sometimes live music, and bunch of fellow beer people for company, and a free tour if you want it. They have about 10 different beers on tap, all of their staples, along with some rotating seasonals. You can bring a bite to eat yourself or stop at the food truck outside. The cement and metal main room is dog friendly, has a few TVs, and plenty of sitting room. The back room smells of fermentation (which it should, thats where they brew) and has another bar, which is nice because it splits the crowd. All of the bartenders knew the profiles of the beer and were helpful in navigating the selections. A great time with pretty tasty beers. read more

Worst brewery/tasting experience ever. It looks like everyone else reviewed the Saturday tours, I went for the 1st Friday thing where you pay $10 and sample all you want. It was so full there was nowhere to park. Then, we waited 20 mins in line just to pay the entrance and get our cup. Then we had to wait again to get our 2-shotglasses worth of beer. I'm 27 and even I felt kinda old there. It was totally a bar & social scene rather than your standard brewery tour. Plenty of kids were using it as a pre-game and meeting up friends for house parties later. This place was packed. Like you could barely move anywhere, and anytime you move you are in someone's way. There were two bars where you could get samples. One bar was in the back - there was no line, you just had stand there and shove your way in, and try not to spill your shot of beer trying to squeeze out. The other bar was more orderly - people were waiting in a smoothly moving line. It was so long that you got your sample, went back to the end of the line and drank it while waiting for your next turn. Standing in line with a plastic cup waiting for free booze? Reminds me of college frat parties. This was basically the same as an Asylum St bar or club - just as loud, just as crowded, and just as likely to get into a fight. Oh and "brewery tour"? No. You're drinking on the floor of the brew factory, and that's the tour. That would be cool, if you could actually move close to anything to see it, but that's a lot of effort and a lot of chances to piss off a bro. I didn't learn anything about the beer or the brewery but I did learn that people still wear baseball hats cocked kinda sideways, and that if you're a guy and someone opens the door for you only because they want to ogle your girlfriend, you better say thank you because he'll give you shit. read more

Thomas Hooker is the first CT brewery I knew about prior to the craft brew craze. It is well marked with a small parking lot and street parking off a side street. Nice outdoor seating area but on a 100degree day, we stayed inside. I love sours and thoroughly enjoyed their Pulp'd blackberry. They had some other good beers. The vibe is relaxed with bring your own food but sell chips. They have a big store and sell cans. Compared to other local places, the outside area sets them apart but not their beers. read more

I've only come here for their beer tastings on select Friday's. Parking gets crowded if you come late. But they have all of their draft to sample, which is great for any amateur beer-goer. This was the third stop on the CT Beer Trail tour my boyfriend and I took 2 weeks ago, and also my personal favorite of the day. Believe it or not, on Saturdays from 12-5PM, $5 gets you 10 tastings (even though my trip there was included in the tour, I checked the normal prices). They had 14 beers on tap when we went, so it was much like unleashing a bunch of amped-up kids on a new playground. Try all the beers! I tried the Demure Smoked Saison (really nice subtle smoked flavor), the Honey Berry Happiness Ale (bright, fruity, and super bubbly), the Soft Spoken Biere de Table (a little less interesting, but still enjoyable), and the Nor'Easter Winter Lager (my favorite of the bunch--deep and flavorful with pronounced caramel notes). All of them were excellent, and I really wanted to try more, but at this point in our tour, I was starting to get beer fatigue and we had 3 more stops to go. I'm itching to come back and use up all 10 samples, and maybe grab a six-pack of the Nor'Easter as well. Next time! We also went on a tour where we got to try some freshly made beer (not my thing, but still a cool experience). What struck me about this brewery was how their quirky sense of humor is incorporated into everything they make, from the signs all over their brewery to the names of their beer (Stacy's Mom). They also named their brewery cat Blumpkin which is really...special, and Blumpkin herself was sitting on a couch looking perfectly pet-able. Probably because of that irreverent sense of humor, the crowd here tends to be young 20-30-somethings. With the casual couches, pulled pork sandwich station, and funky music, the overall vibe was fun and energetic, full of people enjoying some good beer with friends.
