I really struggled with this review because the food is genuinely good, but I had two completely different experiences on back-to-back nights. The food is worth trying, but the wait times can be excessive, and there didn't seem to be much teamwork in the non-smoking dining room. Our first visit was fantastic. It was just the two of us, and our server was outstanding. Drinks stayed full, the food came out quickly, and he checked on us regularly without being overbearing. We were in and out in about 45 minutes. We enjoyed it so much that we returned the next night with about 10 family members. We called ahead and had a table reserved. From what we could see, the non-smoking dining room wasn't especially busy, though I couldn't see what was happening in the smoking section. Drinks took about 15 minutes, which is understandable for a large group, but after that we waited another 15 minutes just to place our order, even though we were ready when the drinks arrived. From there, things went downhill. Our server was friendly but clearly overwhelmed, while another server in the room appeared to have time available and never seemed to step in to help. About 45 minutes after ordering, we asked about our food and were told it was coming. It still took another 10 minutes before it finally arrived--roughly an hour after ordering and about 90 minutes after we had been seated. Some meals came out incorrect, and mine was undercooked. I had to leave before my replacement arrived because it had started raining and I needed to get home to tend to our farm animals. I want to support this restaurant because small businesses are important to our NNK community, and the food really is good. But waiting around an hour for food after ordering is difficult to overlook, especially when, from what we could observe, the dining room didn't appear to be overwhelmed. One small thing that also stood out was the owner's reserved parking space directly in front of the entrance. It felt a little out of place for a customer-focused business. read more

This isn't my first time going to this restaurant/bar... The good thing about it is the bar is smoking but has great ventilation and the restaurant is non-smoking so it has something for everyone. When it's in season, the softshell crab sandwich is my go too, one of my other favorites is the Maryland style crab soup oh my God it's so good! I have to run a few errands this weekend. Me and the neighbor decided to pop by there for a lunch this time I tried the Kinsale hotdog a.k.a. a foot-long hotdog wrapped in bacon and deep-fried served with your choice of sides. I got the homemade coleslaw and everything was cooked to perfection. Obviously, I did not eat the entire hotdog. It was way BIG! My friend ordered the French dip which comes made with shaved ribeye steak and a huge bowl of Au Jus for dipping ! His side that he chose was onion rings. They were great. read more

This is one of my go to places post golf. This place has more of a sports bar vibe with many tvs showing sports and a nice pool table to get some fun round of pool. Food and drinks are great for a sports bar in the country side. I ordered medium rare cheese burger with side of tots. Tots were nice and crispy. Burger was very delicious and made to perfection. My husband ordered crab cakes and he said he loved it. Although not a crab season but it met his expectations. We are not picky about drinks when we go to sports bars. We often order ipa or lager on the tap. Service was great. They often check on you to see if everything was good. Pool table was a nice plus to this bar. I love playing pool so I am looking forward to going back again when I am in this area. read more

Not worth a second visit. The owners had their parking at front door while handicapped and veterans had to go around their trucks. Bartender was overwhelmed, almost finished my beer before we could order. He for burnt bacon wrapped scallops. I had the joy of hair in my shrimp. We got burgers thinking they couldn't mess that up.....they did! We ordered medium, got rare. Got our bill....$3.55 meal tax. WTF?!? Never heard of that. Next time I'm only tipping on the food not all the extras these places add. Also no apologies for hair in my food. Teach your staff to wear hairnets in the kitchen. read more

Yes!!! What can I say, this was the place to eat because the food was so home made and the portions were generous. We took half our meals "home" to our air bnb for tomorrow's meals. This place rocks! When we first found the Backdraft it was fun, great food and service. Recently, within the past month it's been nothing less than a huge disappointment. The last visit the order was wrong, I ordered the French dip, it was dipped alright. The au jus had spilled all over the sandwich and was a soggy mess. By the time I sent it back, my husband had finished his dinner so I got mine to go. Such a disappointment after waiting almost 40 minutes to get served. Tonight, we thought we would give it another try. Huge mistake. I reordered the French dip, my husband got the Rueben, and nachos for an appetizer. After waiting 37 minutes, I asked the waitress about our food, and she brings out a plate of nachos that had been sitting around until they were soggy. Not to mention we ordered them with no jalapeño and it came on it anyway. My husbands Rueben was soggy with dressing and my bread was crispy on top and a soggy mess on the bottom. Not only was the food a disaster, but the trash in the parking lot needs to be policed as well. On a ten point scale, I give them about a 2. Although the service seems friendly, she never asked to refill our drinks or give us an update on food. For $50 in today's environment I expect more. We won't go back, nor would we recommend this establishment. read more

What to say about this place... The food was delicious. I had one of their cheesesteaks and it was so tasty. The passion charge onion rings are a pass... My kids loved the fire chiefs hats they got from the server. She was great and handled my larger party with 4 kids under 10 and us adults with ease. We were in what appeared to be the dining room which was decorated cutely. There seemed to be another side that was maybe a bar but I didn't check it all out. Definitely on the list to return again. The wait times are out of control at this point. I called in an order at 6:38pm and was told it would be about 45 minutes. It is 7:53pm and I still don't have my food. It shouldn't take over an hour for a salad, cloud sandwich and a cup of chili. I don't know what the problem is, but it needs to be fixed. read more

This place still sucks. Paid $35 for a seafood boil dinner. They boiled it beyond belief. Couldn't peel the shrimp, sure sign of over cooking. The corn was boiled to the point the corn kernels were mush, the melted butter was butter tasted like butter flavored oil with way too much garlic. I told the waitress "I'll let the chef know" she said, nothing more. Your lucky there are limited restaurant options in the area. read more

However, upon entering we were asked to turn around due to them having no seats available, including the bar (there seemed to be an event taking place). I understand that turning patrons away is awkward for staff, but they could've been professional about the situation or at least had a manager at the door or at least a hostess or maybe a SIGN?! Interesting local spot. One side is the bar area which does allow smoking. The odor does carry over slightly into the dinging area but not terribly. Plenty of food options for all. Chicken tenders are big, juicy and flavorful. Chicken Philly was very good as well, very good portion of chicken. Shrimp Po boy(fried) was yummy. Burgers were good but not cooked as requested. Onion rings were thick cut and tasty. Service was okay, it seemed like we had a waitress switch at some point, we all had empty drinks asked for refills and received room temperature water (no ice). We were in around 4pm and were the only ones dining in the dining section and it took a good while to get our food. We tried the key lime pie and strawberry cheesecake crunch for dessert. Both tasty, key lime pie was very tangy which is different but still good. They do have different menu options for dinner which had even more options that sounded worth trying. Also had daily specials. Overall it was a good experience and would return if we are in the area. read more

A wonderful place that I happened upon on my way through Kinsale. I liked everything about it. It's a full service bar with good food. I didn't have any food since I was busy with other things at the time but from what I saw it looked good to me. It is the only place I have been in twenty years that had Ashe trays. Visited for lunch and had the reuben sandwich. Talk about thick - I didn't realize it was a double-decker. I left with a happy belly. The cook is from New Jersey and must have taught these VA locals a few things about how to make a good sandwich. As I come from a family of fire fighters, I definitely appreciated the movie décor as well. read more

Stopped by for one reason the name and the second reason husband said he's always wanted to stop and eat there. My husband is a firefighter so why not stop right? There are two entrances to the establishment. One to the left is the bar area and the one to the right is dining. It was decorated nicely and all. The staff were nice but the only thing is the smoke from the other side I'm assuming makes it way to the dining room. The food was ok we had the nachos which were good. I had the smokehouse which is shaved steak, bbq sauce, fried onions strings on a hoagie roll. Pretty dry and not fully filled on the bun. Not that great. Also we had the chicken wings with sweet chili sauce we weren't impressed. read more

We enjoy going to this hometown favorite. The food is always seasoned well and special requests are 99% of the time handled with ease. The wait staff is very friendly and attentive and usually bring me my drink without even having to order it. I guess you could say I'm a "regular". The weekend specials recently have been excellent. Went in for dinner on a Thursday, group of 5. We were under a time constriction since we were going to see a play after dinner. Dinner seemed to take a while to arrive. Then all of our dishes were cold so we couldn't figure out why it had taken so long. My shrimp and grits had a great flavor and the hot dog was tasty (although the kitchen must have been running out of cold slaw for the hot dog entree). The person in our group who ordered the burger, said it was awful. I'd be willing to try this place again though. I think it's more of a drinking establishment. read more

Went there today for lunch, first timer. Had one of there Phillys and it was delicious! Had well cook crinkle fries nice and crispy. Bread was excellent too. I don't know if the barbecue sauce was made on-site but it was excellent. Waitress was very personable and even gave me a to go drink. Can't wait to go back and try a burger! read more

I was back East visiting a friend at his beach house that was out this way. We'd been eating Seafood for a couple days and I was looking for something different. The Good: We came here on a Saturday night and the special was prime rib. It was a 16 oz angus prime rib, soup or salad, potato, and starch for $21. 1st off when the steak came out it was more like 20oz. It was cooked perfectly, tasted great, and it was the least fatty prime rib I'd even had. You can get it blackened also, so then the whole thing is like the crusty outside that is so delicious. The soup was crab bisque and it was really good too. I choose the fingerling potatoes. When I got them they had mini purple potatoes mixed in too. It was a great meal and 1 of the top 5 prime ribs I've ever had. The Bad: You can smoke in restaurant/bars in VA and there was a ton of people smoking in here. It was also weird seeing the waitress smoking and then bringing out your soup 30 seconds later. The ugly: some of the clientele. It was an interesting little place. It turned into a bar at like 9:30pm. They had a DJ that started playing, and they charged a $5 cover after that. I wish we would have stayed later than 10:30pm to check out the late night seen. read more

I kept hearing about this place from co-workers, and since it's somewhat local, and we're in a quality restaurant desert down here, we decided to give it a try. It's firehouse themed, which doesn't bother me, because I was a firefighter for many years. When we came into the bar entrance, there was a live band playing, so they sat us in the dining room. They seemed short staffed, because it took a while for anyone to take our order. The place isn't fancy, but it was cozy. They have a little gas fireplace which keeps it warm. We ordered crab dip, which was average. It wasn't warm and came with crackers. It had a good amount of crab, and wasn't too salty, but it wasn't anything to jump for joy over. I ordered a "Black Smoke" Burger, which was like a Black an Bleu with Bacon, and my fiancé ordered the crab cake sandwich, billed as "the best in Virginia" on the menu. The food took a bit to come out (the place was packed, so I'm not knocking them for it) and when it came out, our server knocked my tea over, directly onto my plate. I figured it was going to take forever to replace it, but she was back in less than five minutes with another burger, so I'm assuming some other poor sucker had to wait longer for theirs! The Crabcake was FAR from the best of anything. It didn't have a lot of filler, but it was obviously fried or grilled in the same place they grilled the burgers. It has a very burnt burger taste to it. The inside tasted ok, but she couldn't get past the taste of the outside. My burger was very good, and the fries were also good. After we ate, we went to the bar side to check out the band. We had a couple beers, and were enjoying the music, when a fight broke out, at first between two men, and then between their wives! It was quickly broken up, but it was comical, and fit in well with the bar. The Backdraft is a rough and tumble joint, with average bar food, that won't make you sick, but won't leave you with a feeling you'll want it again. It is what it is, a honkytonk style bar, in a rural area.. if you like that type of bar, you'll like the Backdraft! read more

I ordered mild wings and I got plain wings and the food took so long.they burnt our mozzarella sticks. We ask for crab soup but we got vegetable soup and the put crab in it. Their was a hair in my water.and they shredded cheese on our Parmesan wings after we asked for it to to be melted. read more
