I stopped in Cleveland for the night and met a coworker here for dinner. I'll admit I was skeptical at first based on the reviews but my coworker had eaten here recently and recommended it. I was pleasantly surprised! I ordered the 14oz ribeye with a baked potato and it was delicious. Very tender, flavorful, and cooked exactly as I asked for (medium). Our waitress was spot on; friendly and kept our drink glasses full. Service was as good as any I have ever had. I will be back! read more

Overpriced, I ordered the gulf shrimp at 21 bucks and the other seafood establishments in the area have the same meal at a better price, and they taste just as good. Good luck getting your waitress to bring you stuff. My husband had pecan grouper and it was ok. He asked for butter and sour cream and it never came, so he didn't eat his potato. Smack dab in the middle of a nice downtown area. The staff is really nice and friendly. I have eaten here twice. On the first visit I started with crawfish tails and cheeze sticks which were pretty good. The salad bar was OK but not special. I ordered the Chicken Falafle (sp?) which was recommended by the waitress and was actually really good. A friend got the lobster tail and was very happy with his choice saying he would order it again. The second time I visited I was taking some customers out for dinner. The food was still really good as my friend ordered lobster tail again and I tried the ribeye. My only gripe was that it took way too long for the food to come out....I mean awkward long and kind of embarrassing in front of my customers. I do not want to be too rough as the food was great once it came out. But....this is something they may need to improve on. I agree that the pricing is scaled a bit higher than it should be, but this is still worth trying out. read more

Backdraft seems to have the same problem as several other restaurants in the Cleveland area: mediocre food at exorbitant prices. While I've never had a bad meal there, I've also never walked out of the restaurant thinking, "Wow, that was great!" I will say that the stuffed lobster tail I had on my first visit was tasty, but unfortunately, it was overcooked. If they lowered their menu prices by about 20-30%, I'd probably be less critical of their food. I just expect the quality of the entrees to match the price I'm paying for them. As far as atmosphere is concerned, the restaurant feels cramped, and being someone with back problems, I find their seating to be pretty uncomfortable. The salad bar is microscopic and feels pretty pointless. I like a little bit more to my salad than lettuce, cheese, bacon bits, and ranch dressing. Service is decent, but as others have stated, the kitchen is a bit slow. Overall, Backdraft isn't a bad restaurant, but there's definitely some room for improvement. read more

Within a moment or two of arriving, our server comes to greet us and tells us the specials and takes our drink orders. I decide to test the bar tender's repertoire. I ordered an "Old Fashioned" and wait breathlessly until the waitress returns and informs me that their bartenders don't know how to make one. So, the bartenders don't know how to make one of the six classic cocktails. I am somewhat concerned because I believe ANY/EVERY bartender should know how to make the six classic cocktails and any bartender that doesn't at least know enough to improvise one of these has no business pouring anything but beer. I forgive the deficiency of the bar assuming that the bartender is a college kid who hasn't slung liquor long enough to appreciate the appeal of a well made cocktail. I toss the bar a softball and hope that they will console me with a passable amaretto sour. I am not disappointed as a perfectly blended beverage finds its way to my table. Leigh and I decide to split the appetizer special, pepperoni dip. I order a cup of the crab soup for myself as well and we ponder our entrée options. The menu has most of the staples you'd expect for dining in the delta and a few eyebrow raising surprises. Leigh decides upon a steak and I order the Alaskan salmon with a mango chutney paired with garlic whipped potatoes and an order of the barbecued shrimp on the side. Our entrees come with a salad and I fill a small plate with a delicious bean salad from the salad bar. It is light, effervescent, and a wonderful blend of vibrant flavor and firm yet yielding textures. About half way through my salad our pepperoni dip arrives with a basket of bread and we dig in. I am somewhat skeptical of this concoction until I take the first bite and fall in love with the seductive blend of gooey mozzarella, hearty pepperoni, and silky smooth cream cheese. Leigh and I quickly dispatch with the small sizzling bowl of love in front of us and just as we do, my soup arrives. The soup is one of crab, corn, and vegetables in a cream broth. It is almost a blend of crab bisque and cream corn chowder. The soup has a definite kick from what I presume is cayenne. The spices aren't overwhelming, but the heat is certainly there. It is delightful and I share some with Leigh. She loves it and remarks about it right away. Finally, our entrées arrive and we dig in. Leigh's steak is done to perfection with a nice seared crust and just the right amount of pink in the middle. The steak's flavor is excellent and the cut is appropriate (some local steaks can be a little under or over proportioned for my tastes). The salmon is better than I anticipated. The portion was large enough to be satisfying and the meat was flaky without being rubbery or chewy. The mango chutney gives a distinct bright sweetness to the dish that plays well with the delicate flavor of the salmon. The potatoes were a little less firm and garlicky than I would have liked, but they were by no means bad. I prefer mashed potatoes to have some texture to them and to be a little more liberally flavored with garlic. The barbecued shrimp was a little less satisfying. There was no description of the shrimp in the menu and I had envisioned skewered shrimp grilled with barbecue sauce. Instead the shrimp were served in a bowl of sizzling oil and barbecue sauce still in the skins. I have no problem with peeling shrimp of they are boiled, but reaching in to a bowl of sizzling fat saturated with barbecue sauce and spices to peel my shrimp isn't my idea of fun. The shrimp were good, but more labor intensive and less flavorful than I would have enjoyed. The mess of peeling and eating the shrimp seemed somewhat out of pace with the otherwise accessible and neatly presented meal. I would recommend sparing the customers the "dirty work" of cleaning their own shellfish unless they are being served boiled shrimp, crawfish, or another traditional dish where one expects to "dig" for their meat. Overall on a scale of one to ten, I give Backdraft a 6.5, with a 7 easily within their grasp given a more proficient bar staff and at least the addition of a handy-wipe to their more "finger dependant" fare. The menu is familiar and diverse enough to please most locals and the prices are comparable to other local places such as The Roof or Airport Grocery. I recommend taking a friend or someone special there and sampling the cuisine for yourself. I will definitely frequent the establishment again and look forward to discovering more from their menu. read more

I want to start by saying this is my real name. Just so the owner will remember who is writing this review. I found this place on Yelp and looked nice. The posted hours of operation was until 10pm. We arrived at 9:15pm and were told that the kitchen was closed. We offer to pay extra if they cooked us a dish. We were then told by the bartender to order a pizza to be delivered, that others have done this before. The owner, a woman named Cindy, who could possibly be the rudest human I have ever met, totally flipped out. We had plans to stay there and have drinks and spend plenty of money. Instead we were asked to pay our tab and leave. I paid the bartender Morgan ( who was nice ) $40 for 2 drinks. The tip was far having to work for a rude ass person like Cindy. If this is how she treats customers, I feel sorry for the employees. AVOID THIS PLACE!!!!!!! read more

This new Cleveland restaurant seems to be attracting crowds, but I don't know if they'll get a lot of repeat business. The food (mostly seafood and a couple of steaks) is mediocre and overpriced. My steak was tasty, but the salad bar and the side dishes were either not good or just ok. The firefighter theme is kind of strange. Mixed review. The food was better than ok but not great. My biggest complaint was that it all came out too fast. I really wanted to relax with a drink and just take my time. Before I could take first sip, out comes the salad. Few bites into the salad and out comes the entree. Had fried shrimp and it was very good. I think I was just put off by feeling rushed. We knew Cindy, the owner/chef of BACKDRAFT, from her original restaurant THE TIN ROOF AND COMPANY in Boyle MS, and were delighted to find her again at her new restaurant. She uses many heirloom recipes that have stood the test of time and has an unerring sense of taste from the restaurant's decor to the details of preparation and presentation of every single item on the menu. Cindly's son, the bartender, is a volunteer fireman and it is from his involvement in firefighting she developed the theme of the restaurant's decor. We had the Cindy's Crab Au Gratin as an appetizer and it was just as good as it was when last we had it at the TIN ROOF. It used to be available as an entree, but it is served only as an appetizer at BACKDRAFT... I think the portion is large enough to serve as an entree with the simple addition of a side or a salad. My wife had the Ahi Tuna with the Wasabi Ranch sauce on the side. The Ahi was sushi grade and served with perfect grill marks on the outside and rare on the inside; the sauce was so good Margaret asked for more and it appeared on the table almost instantly. I had the New Orleans style BBQ Shrimp and oh my goodness was it good. There was plenty of freshly baked bread served with the BBQ Shrimp to dip in the sauce - which is reminiscent of Pascal's Manale restaurant in NOLA - a very good thing! We were a bit too stuffed for full sized desserts , but the waiter let us know they offered dessert shots - shot glass sized servings of their desserts.. Margaret got the Key Lime Pie and I got the Banana Pudding (made from Cindy's grandmother's recipe, which is served hot!) and we were delighted. Christoper was our waiter and we couldn't have asked for better service.
