Big disappointment. Maybe I should've ordered their signature fried chicken instead, but I wasn't that hungry for a whole bunch of fried chicken legs. After reading all the positive reviews of this up and coming new Korean eatery, I finally got to try it today. I ordered a small deep-fried Boneless chicken with tater tots & the Beef Bibimbap. Given the time the fried to order boneless chicken left the kitchen to the time they actually reached my mouth was only about 3 minutes, I have to say the chicken pieces were surprisingly soggy. I don't get it. Maybe too much red chili paste so they got soft too quickly? The chicken had a very strong garlic taste and I usually love garlic. I was also disappointed at the lack of "bam!" from the Korean chili red paste that was coated all over the chicken. I expected at least a kick on my tongue. Nope. I then put my hope in the Bibimbap. Sorry to report, the $5.65 price tag + sunny side up egg + nicely seasoned green veggie were the only redeeming features. The rice, which is supposed to be the basics to any Korean rice dish, and what I was eagerly anticipating, failed to impress. The rice tasted hard, not like cold hard, but warm hard. The meat, well, it was not slices of beef, which is what an usual Bibimbap would serve, this was just ground beef. I understand I shouldn't expect too much from a dish under $6, but ground beef? I'd still give their signature fried chicken a try. I wonder if I could order "spicy" to be at a higher level than what I had tasted today.

HALIFAX! Do you know that you have a place making Korean Fried Chicken right on the peninsula? Dear sweet mother of mercy, why are you not giving them all your money for mouthfuls of fried, saucy, chicken-y goodness? This, the best kind of KFC, was the foodie trend in Australia when I lived there last year. And Backoos, a tiny unassuming takeaway restaurant not from from SGR, has it. You need to get it in your gob, whether it's the small bite-sized pieces of dakgangjeong in a cup, or an entire chicken cut-up and fried and sauced until your mouth explodes. It's a small place with only a couple of stools and a small counter for a quick lunch in. You're better off getting it to go. Sure, they seem to have a menu of other foodstuffs, but why would you bother?

Been wanting to go here for a few weeks and finally stopped in. Ordered a whole chicken half and half. Half plain and half sweet and spicy. There are several other options including honey garlic and green onion. It was cooked fresh while we waited. The sign said its best to call ahead for a whole chicken ... Good advice. Our order was taken by the man at the counter , we paid and then he disappeared into the back to cook. The smells in the shop were incredible. He was completely focused on our meal. Others came in but he continued on with our order. We could hear all the food being prepared. The chicken hit the fryer. Ahhhh, nothing quite like that sound. We had also ordered japchae. Used to having that cooked and ready to go but once again, it was cooked to order. It took about 30 minutes so definitely call ahead if you're not good with waiting. We rushed home with our food. Took the obligatory picture for social media and dug in. It was so worth the wait! The chicken was perfectly cooked. It had been cut into bite sized pieces making it easy to eat. The japchae was beautifully seasoned and delicious. Batter is like a tempura as opposed to dredged and no seasoning to speak of on the plain. The sweet and spicy was cooked so the sauce was caramelized. It comes with two salads - pickled daikon and fruit. I am a fried chicken fiend and this was definitely top 5 fried chicken Ive eaten. This meal could easily feed 4 normal appetite humans. Two of us barely made a dent. They have daily combo specials. Look forward to our next trip.

This Korean restaurant is on Birmingham about two blocks from the Central Library. I found it easily. It was my first time here, although I have been to the one on the Bedford Highway a few times. The girl who took my order was friendly and helpful. I had the japchae appetizer. It was freshly made for me in the kitchen while I waited. It came hot and there was lots of it. I ate it in the restaurant. I would have liked to have had a little kimchee to eat with it. They have a good menu with a number of delicious dishes at reasonable prices. The restaurant was busy while I was there. I will be back to try other dishes.

Full Chicken (half and half) comes with salad and pickles. Side of rice. So goooooood!

The flavors here were rich and deep and maybe even mild for me but... potato was nowhere to be found in potato soup. The galbi was sweet and well marinated, soft yet chewy. Wholesome bowl of bibimbap with a good mix and balance of textures and flavors from the veggies, meat, grains and egg, bound by a few squeezes of gochujang. I wish there was more seafood in the pancake, but what was there made up in taste. Settled in a quiet and sleepy plaza, we were their last customers for the night. Service was attentive and thoughtful, the server asked about our preferences for water temperature and cleaned up promptly in a team. The restaurant offers KBBQ in addition to a la carte.

It's a small space with maybe a couple of dozen covers, simply decorated with some lovely fabric prints on the walls. Tables have the hot grill plate, if you're going that way. Our waitress was delightful, especially when she discovered she was entertating a fellow Korean speaker. Encouragingly the clientele was heavy on oriental folk and the food was just superb. We went quite light, what with it being lunchtime and everything was tasty, good size and very authentic, according to my daughter. With the population growing in the area, I sincerely hope this excellent establishment flourishes.

There's a variety of lunch options near my office, but many are your standard pizza joints,…read morein-house lunch spots, and cafes. Gangnam Korean BBQ caught my eye as a place that would have something different - and more flavour - to offer. Their menu has a broad selection of options, with a couple dozen apps, as well as several each of rice and noodle dishes, soups, hot pot and of course, their namesake Korean BBQ. I was looking for something that wouldn't splatter my work clothes in some sort of sauce, so I went with the tofu bibimbap. It was a great mixture of crisp, pickled veg, a rich fried egg with crispy edges and a runny yolk, and soft, lightly fried tofu. A side of gochujang let me spice it up to my own taste. The bibimbap came with bonus sides of miso soup, kimchi and danmuji (yellow, pickled daikon). All added their own flavours and textures to the meal - the warm, savoury soup, the funky snap of the kimchi, and I really enjoyed the danmuji. In addition to its vibrant yellow, the pickling mellowed out the earthy funk of the daikon but each bite still had a great crunch and light tartness that helped cut through the richer parts of my meal. All told, it was a delicious meal and at an easy-on-the-wallet price of just $14 for a hearty, but healthy, meal. A return visit saw me coming by with my wife for a weekend lunch. She went for a couple of their many delicious-sounding apps, the fried Brussels sprouts and yakitori, while I went for the jajangmyeon (black bean pork and noodles). My wife's dishes came out first, and impressively quickly. Deep fried Brussels sprouts are this generations beet and goat cheese salad in their ubiquity, but hey, it works! With just the right level of char, the crispy cruciferous vegetable was dressed in a teriyaki sauce and sesame seeds for extra flavour. The yakitori weren't quite what I expected, as the chunks of chicken were deep fried instead of the typical grilling, but I appreciated their crisp crust that the frying imparted. A bed of spinach and drizzle of sauces felt like an unnecessary deviation that would be better served by a smoky, charcoal grilling, but they weren't bad so much as a bit superfluous. After a short wait, and a few stolen bites of my wife's food, my hefty bowl of noodles was before me. The noodles had a similar look to ramen, minus the de rigeur crinkle and weren't as supple, and came with a veritable sea of black bean sauce. The deeply rich, savoury and sweet sauce doused every noodle and then some, with tender bites of pork, cabbage and onion fleshing out the dish. Our server said this was his favourite dish on the menu, and I can see why - it's a bit of a deep cut versus the more familiar dishes to us non-Koreans, but it checked a lot of delicious boxes! My times sampling Gangnam's food have been nothing but complete successes, and while I benefit from proximity to them, they're a destination-worthy place with wonderfully executed food at more than reasonable prices.

Before heading out, we selected five items from the extensive menu, and chose to eat-in. When I handed the list of items we wanted, the hostess graciously suggested that the amount of food might be too much for two diners. My response was that the intent was to get to taste as broad a range of dishes possible, rather than a limited number based on just two of us. Turns out that had there been four of us dining, there was plenty of food to go around. We were the only Caucasians present. I think there were five other tables occupied, and the customers were relaxed regulars who obviously had a preference for this venue. I think the wait time for the food was about 15 - 20 minutes. As the dishes started arriving, we were issued chopsticks and spoons. Neither of us were experienced in the use of chopsticks, so forks were the first request. Maybe even knives, next time. The dishes were produced without any ostentatious flourish. All were hot and the dishes well heated and I found that out the hard way. I was impressed with the hostess. She was the only employee in the serving area, in addition to an unknown number employed in the kitchen. So she did the serving, the cleanups, answered the phone, and dealt with the take-our orders. She wore an engaging smile, and was gracious at all times. No lurking nearby as we ate, but she had a very good situational awareness of all that was taking place. There was also a "call" button on the table, which brought her immediately to us to answer a question. With her poise and skills, there are a lot of servers and hostesses I have encountered at other dining spots who could have learned from watching her for even a short time. The food surpassed any expectations. It was all excellent. I felt that the kimchee fried rice might not have delivered a full kimchee experience. And then I spotted a couple of small pieces of cabbage on one of the condiments plates and popped one the into my mouth. My sinuses suddenly felt as if they were on fire. My face grew hot, and I realized that this had to be the genuine item. Next time, my approach will be a bit more circumspect, but I will again partake. My son and I will be back, and will make sure that there are one or two others dining with us. This was an experience we both want to share with others.
