I was not comfortable as a young woman visiting this bar. I'm sure this sentence gets used a lot in generality, but I have an entire essay on my reasoning for this and I hope it can help in any way. I have to preface, this is my first ever review (and first negative review unfortunately) so I have put a lot of thought and time into writing this. I waited a couple days in order for my emotions to not dictate my writing. Backstory: Last Tuesday was my first time visiting Backwoods Bar in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. CDA is my hometown so I was with my friends and family. We had brought together a group of my girl friends and their boyfriends/husbands (8 total). My brother in law from out of state was also there after finally getting time off from the army. It was a special occasion. We were respectful and courteous of our volume since that's how we were raised and knew it was a weekday. However, things turned sour as a man that had been drinking all day arrived. He seemed to have a different idea of how he wanted his night to go and was specifically looking for a fight. To clarify: every situation you will read about below was promptly relayed back to the employees. 1): One of the guys in our group recently had surgery on his arm which was in a heavy-duty sling. The man kept pushing his arm/shoulder (pretending to be playful in a really odd and aggressive way) even after we had explained to him that he was in pain. 2): I then witnessed him taking advantage of my friend's injury by flirting with his girlfriend in front of him in what I assume to be an attempt to rile him up. 3): I try my best in every situation to be polite, but it was growing increasingly uncomfortable to maintain my energy with the amount of jarringly backhanded "compliments" he was throwing at us. It felt as though he was trying to lower our confidence/spirits in a poor attempt for us to "seek his approval". 4): Also him hitting on my twin sister while knowing she was with her husband (he had met my sister's husband just minutes prior) while insulting me was really weird. 5): The man was also following the girls in my group around- even going as far as to linger around the women's restroom when I had tried to excuse myself a second time after being followed around by him. Once I entered the restroom, he began to verbally harass the girls in my group who had seen him follow me. The girls were trying not to be super rude or confrontational, for the fear of things escalating but ultimately they just wanted to let him know that we were being made feel uncomfortable by him. 6): I exited the bathroom; hearing more of my group come over to that location. I heard a lot of the f-slur, and a derogatory term for women's genitalia being yelled- to which he admitted to expelling that type of language when an employee came by. He was then kicked out for the commotion but came back in multiple times afterward. It looked as though the employees were allowing him back in, in hopes he would act differently but of course that was not the case. I saw the bartender embrace him after he came back in a 3rd time- telling him that he was family to them but that he should calm down a little. It was confusing to see an almost 30 year old man being coddled in such an atmosphere. My group consisted of 21-24 year olds and we were baffled. I understand that he was extremely drunk but we could not imagine acting like how he was to then only be given a slap on the wrist and a pat on the back. We were told he was a regular at the bar but that did not excuse how his behavior was dealt with. I really wished better for this establishment but they were prioritizing this man over a decently sized group of young adults who had the real possibility of being regulars as well. We were spending a lot of money and tipping well so it felt like a slap in the face. I fully understand that obviously situations like this sometimes happen at bars. Having been a bartender myself, the way this was dealt with was unprofessional. He was over served and not handled. I hate to leave things on such a negative note because there's potential for this bar to be better. Besides the obvious issues in security/management, I did like that the bar was very nice, clean, and spacious. There were lots of things to do like play pool, corn hole, there's a big open area outside with lots of seating, and tons of card game options. The woman bartender did a great job preparing the drinks. Drinks were tasty & quickly made. I would go back ONLY if I knew changes were genuinely made in terms of security and some sort of accountability:/. I always wish for the best in local businesses so if this kind of instance occurs again, I pray that they are more strict. I wouldn't want any more people to go through this or for them to lose any more business due to something that can so easily be patched. Thank you for reading. read more

If you enjoy paying $20 for cocktails served in shot glasses while being ridiculed by the staff, this may be the perfect spot for you. The bartenders gossip more than they pour, mock customers to score points with their clique, and serve drinks so weak you'll wonder if the vodka evaporated on the way to the glass. Backwoods Bar is a great place if you've ever wondered what it's like to pay fine-dining prices for mocktails in shot glasses while being insulted for asking for regular-sized drinks. It's less a bar and more Mean Girls: Dive Bar Edition. Save your money -- CDA has plenty of places where the drinks have alcohol and the staff left high school behind. read more

If you're part of the "in-crowd," maybe Backwoods will treat you fine. But if you're just looking for a normal night out, prepare to be ignored--or worse. We walked in to find no bartenders in sight for a good 10-15 minutes. One eventually emerged (bathroom break? who knows), and suddenly another woman who had been sitting at the bar as a patron decided she was a bartender too. So yes--she saw us waiting, ignored us, and only jumped up when backup arrived. Off to a great start. The service was cold, dismissive, and joyless. Drinks? A joke. My friends were handed cocktails in whiskey shot glasses and charged $20. The next round, when my friend politely asked for normal-sized cups, she got them--but with zero alcohol inside. Another $20. To top it off, the bartender decided to shame her for the crime of being tall and gorgeous. Classy. This isn't the first time either--we realized the last time we came in, the exact same bartender pulled the same attitude. Two for two. Both times, we left early and took our money across the street to the arcade bar where, shockingly, the staff doesn't belittle paying customers. Backwoods has all the makings of a cozy neighborhood spot, but with staff this rude and unprofessional, good luck keeping the doors open. read more

Monday night Kareoke is a good time. While each bartender is awesome in their respective rights, a few of them have become friends. I enjoy my time at this place. Thursday night they have the Brad and Tad show which is pretty cool. The regulars that chill here are good people. read more

They really out did themselves with the upgrade to this place in 2022. It's super nice inside now. However, no worries, its still a dive bar that just super nice and clean. Same people, same great whiskey, but with nice new TVs too! They play fantastic 80s rock here, which makes this my home away from home...fun people, all down to earth, a great outdoor patio that was also upgraded. All-in-all, a fancy dive bar with good service, great drinks, fantastic music, and awesome people if you're out of town looking for a really nice but still down-to-earth dive, this is your place! I've never been to a bar that had such horrible service every single person that worked there was awful. We were there for 30 minutes never even got confronted for food or beverage never even got a beverage. Do not recommend the servers there are really snobby. When we walked in, she said it would be a 20 minute wait. We just wanted a drink and she said it would be a 15 minute wait just for one drink as she rolled her out her eyes like we were bothering her to do her job. read more

Don't come here if you want to have fun. They try to steal your money when you put money in the jukebox. Only because their patrons are too sensitive and only enjoy music that THEY LIKE. luckily, the owner paid me back for the $10 out in the jukebox. Their patrons belong in a retirement home. read more

t's unfortunate that my review ended this way. My husband and I went in just wanting to play some pool and have a drink. Instead we were met with a sweet bartender who did everything she could and a creepy man at the bar who dictated the music on the jukebox we paid for based on how comfortable he wanted to feel. At the end of the day I'm sure this good ol' boy atmosphere will go over until a man retaliates on what's been said to his gal. The whiskey selection is nothing above what you get at your average bar. What a disappointment. There's no food so nothing to review there and the "ambiance," is a joke. This place is NOT closed. But it is no longer Hogfish Bar. It is now Backwoods Whiskey Bar and it is pretty awesome. Cheap drinks, pool, darts, ski-ball, pinball, and some pretty damn good air-fried food. They have a nice porch with outdoor tables, cornhole and even Jenga. I came here a year ago when it was still Hogfish and I was not impressed. The new owners and staff are excellent. If I were them I'd probably put up a few more TVs, particularly behind the bar, but other than that it's a near perfect bar. read more

If you're gonna have a BOGO special and complain about honoring it, don't have one. If you're gonna participate in a league dart sponsorship and complain about giving the standard halftime drink, don't participate. Either that, or educate your bartender on shift in business etiquette and customer service. (Ie not slamming bottle caps in the trash because you're pissed off at honoring your obligations, and grilling your customer on why/how they should be eligible for said specials). How do you know your patrons don't intend to make it up in tips? Not anymore... I likely won't be back. Too turned off by the evening bartender. Otherwise the venue seems cool enough. Once you get past the smell, it's not a bad dive to hang with friends. Pool and ping pong tables are a bargain. On Sundays pool is free! The bartender is always chill. The daily specials are legit. read more
