I planned a 30th birthday that started at Bad Axe in July 2017, and it was an EPIC way to kick off the party! I reserved a lane (for groups of 12 or more on Saturdays, about $40 per person) and we had our own space to set up a snack table, plug in cell phones, and sit at the "viewing bar" (a piece of wood behind a chain link fence with stools pulled up to it- awesome). The walls were covered in Chicago murals, and the space was a good mix of rustic and urban. Our host greeted us and showed us to our space, and was very patient while we waited for some stragglers to show up. They only take credit card, and each person is charged individually, which is incredibly convenient. One quick online waiver, and we were ready to throw. We started with good form, and did a practice round of two-handed throws and one-handed throws. Again, our host was very accommodating, showing examples and correcting people's form. From there, we jumped right into competitions - we did 3 or 4 different types of team competitions, and ended with a championship round to see who was the best of the best! It was SO FUN and the competitions were well balanced so that no one felt bad about themselves. At the end, we got to try trick throws and THAT was awesome. Throwing two axes at a time, throwing underhand, and many more!!! All in all, it was a fantastic group event, and I would definitely go back! I highly recommend this space for birthdays, bachelor/ette parties, corporate functions, or just a date night. My only complaint is that I wish the Chicago location had way more walk-in days! read more

If you are looking for a unique and fun experience with your friends, this is it. Setting this up was easy and the staff was responsive with the bajillion questions I had at the beginning. Finding the venue was a bit difficult as it's not marked, but I'm here to help. It's on Loomis in the same building as the Bottom Lounge. If you are going east on Lake, make a right on Loomis and it's the last door on the left. When you walk in, you'll be greeted by an instructor and asked to fill our waivers on your phone. I did get a text with this info from the instructor ahead of time, but it was so close to the time when we had to leave it would have been futile to get that to everyone in time. If anything, I would recommend they organize this so these can be filled out a few days ahead, or at least send the text message at least one day ahead. Otherwise, it was a very easy form to fill out and took no time at all. Cody was our instructor and he was fantastic. He kept an eye on us the entire time and gave us pointers on form as we went along. After an initial practice portion, we started playing several games that were really fun, and before you knew it, we had been there for over 2 and a half hours. Our group brought food and drinks (no alcohol) and were cheering each other on the whole time. It was really great to see who was the axe throwing champ of our crew! I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a unique group experience in Chicago. Worth every penny. PS: I sucked, but I didn't care because now I know how to throw an axe. read more

I booked a private party here for a birthday and we had an awesome time. You get to bring your own food and non-alcoholic beverages as well which is great. (I brought pizza and juice boxes). Don't forget napkins and plates because it's not provided. You can also play you own music. I'd recommend wearing layers as it is in a warehouse and it gets cold. I'm not sure how it gets in the summer, though. Our funstructor, Sam, made sure we were all having a great time and showed us some great trick shots. Overall, our group had a ton of fun. Is highly recommend it! On a different note, unfortunately Kaiser Tiger is the only bar nearby. Walk further and find another bar after as it will sour the awesome experience you just had at Bad Axe Throwing. But that's another story. read more

Such a great time. If you're looking for something different, this is definitely your ticket, as I'm not sure what other cities offer up axe throwing? We had a group of 11 girls on a Saturday afternoon, we thought that the larger group size would mean less time actually throwing, but the process moved surprisingly quick. Our instructor, Julian, was awesome. We were a loud, vulgar, annoying group of broads- not only did Julian put up with us, he embraced our crazy group and made the experience that much better. Only bummer is, no booze. I GET IT, throwing weapons and slamming drinks doesn't mix, but a girl can dream. If you're true monsters like our group- it's a 4 min trip to the bar next door to take a shot in between throws. Also consider that the tip is not included in your initial quote! So be sure to factor that into your total cost as you're planning/splitting payments. read more

It was just okay. We scheduled a 3 hour session and left after an hour. It's a very unique experience and glad our group got to try it. Threw the axe about 20ish times. After the first 5, the euphoria fades and it's feels like just playing a game. The wood boards start to chip and the target was hard to see. Make sure to ask for a fresh set of boards at the beginning, ours were heavily used. Pricing was high and didn't match the time we spent at the venue. The axe throwing guide (I think his name was cody) put heavy pressure on our group to tip as we paid individually. That was awkward. read more

Went there last night as a date night with my boyfriend! We got there right at 5 when walk ins started and we were glad we did. Shortly after other people came in and had to be put on a wait list. We went to the south loop location but I over heard our instructor mention the other location is much larger and can take multiple walk ins. He let us control the music at our station with a large speaker which was awesome because it helps you get in the zone and have a really great time! There was a white board to keep score because they also teach you games and tricks to do. It was a super fun and different kind of date night! 10/10 would recommend. read more

This was actually a lot more educational then I thought it would be, we learned all different kinds of throws and techniques and they have an instructor there to keep you safe and show you how to improve. We all had a great time and I will say it is very satisfying getting the axe to stick in the wood. Don't be put off if you don't think you can do it I have never thrown an axe in my life and by the time we left I was at least able to get it to stick once on each turn. read more

What a blast! 5 Stars for an awesome experience but even better customer service! My husband and I just came in (Friday 1/5/18) because the website said they had walk-in throwing. Turns out their website had incorrect information and they had two parties coming in. Well, the guys working wanted to do right by us and let us throw awhile. Since no one from the parties had shown up, they let us get in the lanes and throw a bit. Colin was a killer instructor! He coached us on form and made sure to give us great pointers on how to improve. He took great photos and videos for us too. On top of it all, they told us not to worry about the charge since we didn't get to throw the full time and the website was a mistaken on walk in hours. You guys won me over on customer service alone. Absolutely a blast of an experience and even better treatment. Hats off to everyone working there tonight for being so rad. The instructors were very helpful and super nice so even if you were awful at axe throwing, they still made sure you had fun. They teach you different ways to throw the axes so if you have trouble one way, you're sure to do better another way. Or at the very least, you'll have a hearty laugh at yourself for failing. The venue is really close to tons of bars and restaurants so you can walk to them before or after throwing axes. This is definitely a great bonding activity to do with friends and family. read more
