Badgley's is a combination auto repair shop and museum. It's been operated by three generations of the Badgley family, since 1948, at that location. They love to work on antique cars (although that's not their sole line of work) so there's almost always something interesting being taken apart and lovingly restored. I've been taking my cars there for 20 years, and I trust them absolutely. They routinely tell me I don't know what I'm talking about, and that what I want them to fix isn't the real problem, or it's not worth fixing. Very salt-of-the-earth. Decent, kind, concerned, ethical. When I bring in a problem that isn't within their specialty, they immediately tell me, and refer me to somebody they'd trust to repair their own cars - and I've always found their referrals to be solid too. They shop around for used parts, when that seems like the right way to go. They bought a used engine mount and held onto it for six months for me, because they knew mine needed replacing. Of course, that means they trust ME too - it has to run in both directions. Might not be the cheapest place in town, if you're trying to patch something up to get back on the road. But if you want it done right, the Badgley brothers will do it. read more

I spent well over $100k with Badgleys to restore s classic car to show condition. They were well known for their experience and respected nationally in the classic Oldsmobile circles. The workmanship, body, paint and mechanical was so subpar it couldn't win a prize at a neighborhood block party. It is now at a quality shop being restored from scratch. No explanation was given for the subpar work except "it was difficult for us". They refused to offer any type of settlement and will not take my calls. A lawsuit has been started. I also have a GTO which they did the mechanicals and is still leaking after four years. I take it back to them every spring, they say they've fixed it, by fall it's leaking again. read more

My daughter is an MSU student and we needed a local East Lansing shop to care for her older car. I saw Badgley's Garage recommended several times on MSU parent boards so I had her take her car there for an oil change and tire rotation. We recently had an issue on the weekend, and we helped her get her car there and I called and left a message (I wish they had a key drop) and they promptly repaired the car on Monday. While I agree that this garage is pricier their service/repairs have been good and timely. read more

I engaged Badgley's to fix a car that my son and I had done a DIY brake job (booster+pads+calipers+rotors) on all 4 wheels, but did something wrong because the brakes were binding badly. Badgley refused to do anything about it unless I paid them to replace all 4 calipers to the tune of $1000. Their (mis)diagnosis was that the (brand new) calipers were all bad since "all AutoZone parts have a 90% failure rate". This was despite the fact that they relieved the pressure by opening the bleeders (clearly indicating that pressure was in the LINES). For this idiotic bit of professional misconduct, I was charged $152 for diagnosis. Avoid this place like the plague. read more

The business has been in the family for over 80 years.lots of old decor and family photos. The building is well kept and easy to get to. I took a bus home and returned in an uber. This is my first time using this garage and I'm happy I found it. I called and let them know what area I needed inspected. They were upfront about the inspection price. However, if you have the work done, the amount of the inspection goes towards the repairs. Transparency in car repairs is not typical, but this company has it down. You can use a NAPA tool to price check issues on their website. They text me a report on the finding which included a photo and a video showing where the knocking was coming from. Easy to check around on pricing, but I ultimately had them do the work. Set my wallet back over a grand but it was worth it as my vehicle feels super safe now. read more

Took my car to Badgley's Garage (1st mistake). Initial story I got was that I had 1 cylinder misfiring and that it was likely a bad spark plug and coil. They recommended all new spark plugs and one new coil. So I authorized the repair. After the $810 repair, they told me that mysteriously only half the pistons were firing now. Story then was that there was sludge in the engine. They recommended putting in an additive with the oil and having me drive it for 1000 miles. Then bring it back for an engine flush. I trusted them so I said let's do it (2nd mistake). After picking up my jeep with nearly half the power I dropped it off with, I called them and said I didn't feel comfortable driving the car with such little power. They reassured me that I needed to drive it for 1000 miles. Next day the car overheated and left me stranded on the side of the road. Had it towed back to Badgley's (3rd mistake) only to be charged another $110 and my V8 hemi was still a V4. When I picked it up the second time, they told me the car would "likely have to go to the dealer". It became clear to me that at no point did they have any idea what was going on with the car and yet felt comfortable charging me $920 in unnecessary repairs. I gave them every opportunity, listened to all of their instructions and what did I get in return? $910 more in student debt and half an engine. 0 stars. read more

The two guys who run this place are the NICEST mechanics in Michigan. They are NAPA certified (which your mechanics should always be), and they will do a great job quickly - they did $2000 worth of repairs on my car in like a day. Amazing service, great to talk to, and a local, family-owned feel. I cannot recommend this place more!! read more

I see why they are successful. My daughter's car had ignition issues. She's at MSU I'm back home. They really could have bent me over a barrel but DID NOT! They found the issue and fixed it with no parts and 1 hour labor. I was expecting to pay much more and would have without question. This was my preferred auto mechanic when I lived in Lansing. My ex and I both took our cars here when we were in grad school at MSU and they treated us extremely well. I first went here because of good reviews on another site. My first impression was that the place looked totally sketch: old cars sitting around... it looked kind of like a mini-junkyard. And the mechanics seemed apathetic, like they didn't care whether or not they had your business. But don't let appearances fool you! The guys who work here love fixing up old cars, and when they're not doing work for money, you'll see them doing auto work in their spare time. It's a family business, and if you talk to the guys a bit, they're great, if it a bit rough around the edges. And appearing not to care whether or not they get your business is a good thing: they won't try to screw you over and rip you off! My car was making a weird noise and I took it in here to get it fixed. Not only did these guys fix it for a fraction of the cost of what Tuffy quoted me, they told me straight-up that the other guys were full of crap and that it was a cheap and easy repair. My ex had an almost identical experience. She was skeptical at first, but was completely won over by the good prices and good work. They've even thrown in little stuff for free every now and then. They did good work but don't understand families with a kid in college/old car finances. Despite telling them I didn't want to put a bunch of money in to an old car, they took the opportunity charge top dollar for a brake repair. Again, good work just not recommended if you're in this situation. read more

I went there to have them check out why my engine was shaking when I went into reverse. First off they charged me $117 just to take a look at the car, then they told me my spark plugs, spark wires, and ignition coils needed to be replaced and it was going to cost $500. I went to a different mechanic I know and it turns only 1 spark plug needed to be replaced in the back. I called back to see if Bagdley's would replace just the one spark plug and they insisted that they would only do the $500 repair. I said I couldn't afford to spend $500 on that and they still said they could not only replace my spark plug. Overall I definitely think they tried to pull a fast one on me as my car only had 67k miles on it and should not need several spark wires and ignition coils replaced. I am not originally from the Lansing area and needed to get a clunk in my car looked at. They were able to take my car in quickly, and were flexible when I got stuck at work and couldn't drop my car off on the day of my original appointment day. They gladly took my car the next day and had it finished by the afternoon. Fair price, the work and parts are covered under warranty, and the clunk is gone. Will definitely be using them if I need work in the future! read more
