We have tried several bagel shops since moving to Gainesville last year. Understand we are transplants from Southern California and grew up with the awesome bagels in the San Fernando Valley growing up as well as getting spoiled on good bagels in NYC over the years. The bagels here are good. My preference is the everything bagel. I have had them a number of times and they have been consistently good. They give a good amount of cream cheese or you can opt to use them for breakfast and lunch sandwiches they also have muffins and other baked treats. There are other varieties of bagels including specialty ones in the case by the muffins. I rather routinely get the nova lox on my bagel (sans the capers and onions) which always has good flavor. The only drawback is the place is popular on the weekends. Their line gets long at times and the cafeteria line approach can get backed up at times with people jockeying for position to order, pay and pickup. On the bright side, the coffee area is easily accessible once you pay for your cup and the staff is very attentive to coffee drinkers needs (I have noticed this even though I am not a coffee drinker). They also usually have samples out although you have usually ordered by the time you hit the sample baskets. The samples are kept high enough away from little fingers and behind a sneeze guard with tooth picks already applied to the tastes. We go frequently when the family is willing. So far, I find it to be the best bagels in town. read more

I ordered breakfast for my office. I was quoted one price and was charged a different and higher price the next day when I picked it up. It was a significant price difference, and when I explained to the manager about the price I was quoted the day before and who quoted it to me, he simply said that the price was below his cost and he couldn't do it. He then proceeded to explain how much money I was already saving, even though every example he cited was the price listed on the menu. I understand that people make mistakes, and that isn't the issue. One of the first rules of management is knowing that when someone on your team makes a mistake like this, it is a failure of management to properly train and inform team members, and management has to be accountable for it. I guess that the $20 gained on the price switch is worth losing future business. And who knows? Maybe it is. I will say that the person who originally took my order was very friendly. Love. Love. Love! I go here on the weekends, they have fresh wonderful bagels! The sandwiches are great! The wraps are amazing. The bagels and cream cheese to die for! My usual is an everything bagel with regular cream cheese! So good! They also have great hazelnut coffee, which comes directly from a village that they provide income to! Didn't know that this place existed until yesterday! The bagels are decent and the coffee is decent. Best bagels tried in gainsville. They have a huge coffee variety and refill charges (75 cents) go to charity. The salmon cream cheese was cream cheese with literal chunks of salmon lox in it. Weird, but it worked. read more

Very, very overpriced. A bagel with sausage egg and cheese with a Gatorade for $10! The break down of the sandwich is this..Hard Bagel (day old?) microwaved liquid egg, cheese and a generic sausage patty. The taste was bland and hard to eat. This was my first and last visit. read more

This would have to be my favorite non-chain bagel shop in Gainesville. Their bagels are always fresh and flavorful. My mom who is from New York loves them and always requests them when she visits. We ordered a three-cheese roast beef sandwich today, but the meat was so tough, you couldn't chew it. Had to through most of it away. The sweet tea tasted 'old'....either it was old, or the container hadn't been well-cleaned recently. Definitely not a good experience. And probably the last one for a while. Our favorite spot for breakfast, coffee and good bagels. Unique bagels - spinach, pumpernickel - plus scones, muffins and lunch too! Don't be afraid - the line looks long when you walk in, but they move you through it quickly. PLUS - samples of muffins and bagels & cream cheese while you wait. Can't beat that! A good place to enjoy a nice read and a good cup of coffee. They support Guatemala coffee culture with charitable funds while serving their delicious coffee. This place is irreplaceable to me. My grandpa Curtis used to take me here, and there's a deep sense of happiness and nostalgia whenever I come back. With all the change that's happened to Gville throughout the yrs, it feel like this has been the only place to remain constant. Plus, the food never disappoints, and this place has a good deal on bags of bagels. I'd take em to study groups at UF. They were a crowd pleaser. :) read more

I'm hoping I went on an off day or too late in the day but regardless it was a bad experience. The staff are friendly (yay they get a star!) I paid just about 7 bucks for a toasted bagel with cream cheese and a bottled drink. That's too expensive even in ny! The bagel was hard as a rock inside and out and not toasted the slightest bit! I brought it back to the counter and was given a whole new bagel which was very very nice of them considering I already ate half of my original bagel (I was hungry!). I hate to complain but I felt for the price I paid I needed to speak up. The second bagel was a little warmer than the first but still severely stale and i couldn't take more than one bite. The staff was really nice but the food was pretty bad and overpriced. The bagels were hard and chewy and the chicken salad seemed really gross and old. The meat was also super processed. Best bagel place in Gainesville that I've found. The only knock i have the place is its a little expensive especially if you order any of the sandwiches. A bagel, cream chese and pop(soda for all the locals) will run about 5 bucks. This is also a great place to pick up a dozen bagels for the office. If you have time run next door to publix to get cream cheese since both places only offer it in the tub and Publix is about $2 cheaper. I recommend going here if you need a bagel on the run or looking for a place to relax and eat with no wait on a sunday. read more

The food is good and the staff is very friendly. However, every time I come here they forget half of our order, then have to scramble to make it after half the line passes us. The ordering process is highly inefficient with as many as five or six people taking orders and not finishing the order before they move onto the next order. I'm sure people have a pleasant experience here but seriously, every single time I go here our order is forgotten about. First time here and it was delicious! Bagels were fresh and service was quick! I got the jalapeño cheddar bagel with veggie cream cheese and it was great! I'm going to buy a tub of veggie cream cheese next time! My husband got the everything with plain cream cheese. Great prices as well! We have guests coming next weekend and we will be getting a bunch of bagels and cream cheese from them to have for breakfast! They also have a great selection of coffee and pastries! read more

I don't particularly love this place but my finance thinks it is the best breakfast place in America. Their claim to fame are thier breakfast sandwiches. The coffee is really good. Yay for a decent bagel in FL! My bagel sandwich (fresh and yummy in all respects), bag of day old bagels to go, and coffee were great. So excited to have access to a good non-chain bagel joint. I love that they have poppyseed, spinach, and tomato-basil bagels. Been to Bagel Bakery a few more times since last review. Still lovin' it. I had been hearing a lot about this place from people and decided to check it out with a few friends. There was a line when we walked in ,but it wasn't long until we were able to order! There were so many options that it was quite overwhelming for my first visit. Everything looked and smelled so good! I ended up ordering an everything bagel with lox and was not disappointed. My friends ordered the bagel melts and they looked amazing. The food was out quickly and they gave us decent sized to go boxes for the road. The cashier was also nice and did not charge us for refills on the iced coffee which was nice. The only complaint I had about the everything bagel was that it was a tad bit salty, so if you are sensitive to that then I would try a different option! They had so much on the menu though it would not be hard to find something you like. I can't wait to come back and see how other things on the menu are. read more

This bagel shop is awesome! Great bagels, sandwiches, customer service. I would have given 5 stars, but I do not agree with the tipping policy. They give the associates tips to kids in Guatemala. Not that I do not want to help kids in Guatemala, it should be an option to give if you want to. I would much rather help the college kids who live here and made my awesome bagel. This place has some of the worst bagels I have ever eaten in my entire life, if you can even be as generous to call these bagels - more like burnt, tough, Crocs. Just beware if you go on a Monday, I can only assume whatever edible object I was just given was made last week sometime then thrown into the freezer, only to be used today to actually serve to real customers. I will usually eat whatever food I order, no matter what I order, but this was an exception - had to throw the entire thing away after I took 2 bites. My jaw felt like I was chewing on taffy for 5 hours. It's kind of embarrassing how a place like this can actually stay open and have people come in honestly. The bagels are very good, and other baked goods are generally fine. They offer several different coffee choices, some flavored coffees as well as three regional beans; however, all the regional beans are from Latin America. With three different insulated urns available, wouldn't it be nice to offer a wider variety. Maybe African (Kenya? Zanzibar? Ugandan?) or Indonesian (Sumatra? Java? Sulawesi?) coffees. There is far more difference there than there is among Guatamala, Honduras, and Columbia. read more

After trying nearly every bagel place in Gainesville, we finally came across this hidden gem. This city is full of mediocre bagels and, after spending an entire summer in Manhattan, my standards are pretty high. These bagels, however, are about as authentic as it gets. Nice and doughy on the inside but crusty on the outside, not too thick or too thin, awesome flavor selection, and delicious cream cheeses - the bagels at Bagel Bakery are on point. I will probably never try another bagel place in Gainesville because I'm so incredibly impressed with this one. People have commented on the price, but I'm willing to pay an extra $2 for something I actually enjoy eating. They use compostable cups and get their coffee from Guatemala, and the owner remembered us the second time we came here! In my opinion, it doesn't get any better. My family and I have visited Bagel Bakery on many occasions because my wife likes it, it's convenient, and she has a slight tendency to drag me to places I am not too crazy about. But I am done.... I have finally decided to write a review on this place and most importantly the people that work here because there seems to be a common recurrence. I will divide my review into 3 sections: Coffee and Food, Service, and Overall feel/ambiance. The coffee is strong, fresh and warm, and if I could have their coffee without having to interact with the immature, feisty, and pimple-faced young ladies behind the serving counter, I would return (more on the people further down). The food has never been that good. The eggs used in their sandwiches and wraps usually have that fluffy air-filled consistency like they were made from powdered eggs. You know what I mean, the type of eggs you would expect if you lived in outer space or maybe FEMA would hand out to citizens ravaged by a hurricane. It doesn't taste like eggs, it tastes synthetic. I used to have their bagel & lox until it started to turn into a caper and cream-cheese fest with very little smoked salmon. I mean this sandwich went from great to being nothing but a slice of tomato on cream-cheese and a pile of capers... Com'on guys, you keep forgetting the salmon. Their bagels used to be fresh and warm; no more. This last Sunday I ordered the cinnamon raisin bagel and it was as hard as a turtles shell (ie, old as heck). Seriously? If your bagels aren't fresh don't call your establishment a "Bagel Shop". Let's move on to the people: The majority of people that work at Bagel Bakery (we usually visit on Sundays) are ill-mannered, possess a bad attitude about working, and seem to have zero potential for improvement. The sandwich preparers are usually pretty inexperienced and their only focus is to get you, the customer, out of the way so they can move on to the next person. Its almost like they are being timed and you are delaying them if you ask for your sandwich to be toasted. My wife made the mistake of asking the bagel be toasted... the young lady behind the counter told her "you said don't toast it before". My wife responded: "sorry, I changed my mind. Can you please just throw it in the toaster for 30 seconds?". The young lady took the bagel, threw it in the garbage and proceeded to toast another (Folks, I promise, this is no exaggeration). Not a second later the cashier, an older chubby gentleman with glasses, who wears a T-shirt to too small for his frame yelled "Alright, lets get you out of here... What are you having?". We felt like we should publicly apologize for having a toasted sandwich or something... They completely screwed up our Sunday morning; the only positive that came out of it was that my wife has finally agreed not to return. Lastly, lets talk overall feel/ambiance: I am sorry to say this but these are some racist individuals. We witnessed an African-American family get treated with such disdain that I was embarrassed. It is not the first time either... I had seen something similar before, but just chucked it to 'someone having a bad day'. As a long time Gainesville resident, I am glad to say that Bagel Bakery is not representative of the overall Gainesville community. I am also struck by the pictures and words written on their walls about how doing business with the Natives in Nicaragua (or some other Central American nation) has helped them (the natives) increase their profits... That mural reeks of colonialism and it is written in a very condescending tone. Note to the Bagel Bakery owner(s), after various visits to your establishment and witnessing your staff treat minorities, I am appalled by the patronizing picture and words on your wall. In closing, the eggs are powdered, the bagels stale/hard, the staff is mean and seem to be on edge, and the ambience is reminiscent of a 1920's whites-only café where folks are belittled and spoken down to just because. Oh, I almost forgot, the coffee is pretty good. read more

I'm kind of not sure of what to say about these guys: they're a local business and seem dedicated to support local artists (they have artwork for sale form several hanging on their walls) and local suppliers of foodstuffs, plus local non-profits, all of which I like. However, their sandwich options are limited and pretty trite: they offer more or less the same things you may find at Rolly-Polly across the parking lot for probably less money. I mean things like a California turkey wrap, in example, which I had for lunch. Their food is ok, but not distinct at all nor did it taste especially fresh as I'd expect. The interior is ok but aside from the local art pretty standard for suburbia. I've not tried their bagels yet so I cannot comment on those at all. The staff IS in fact very polite and friendly as someone else noted, and that's awesome, but there's nothing about the food which to me places it above or seperate from what I can get elsewhere in the Millhopper area. read more

Terrible! They clearly do not know how to make bagels, as these were tasteless and harder to chew than steak. They put very little topping on the "bagel" and overcharge for everything. I bought their "fresh-squeezed" orange juice for over $4 that turned out to be Tropicana poured into a cup. I don't understand how this store is still in business. read more

I never write reviews unless the restaurant really warrants one. Bagel Bakery is a small bagel shop with great quality bagels but terrible service. Even when there is no line, I have waited for an unnecessary amount of time for someone to take my order. The people behind the counter seem disorganized and constantly behind. The coffee is sub-par. Also the prices seem too high for what you get. I mean, $4.00 for a bagel and cream cheese? Just this morning I ordered one bagel and cream cheese, I waited a solid 20 minutes with only a few others in line. The order came back with two bagels, both the wrong kind. Not to mention the person ahead of me found a hair in their bagel. This place either needs to improve or it is going to lose customers. I keep going back hoping it will be better but it never is. read more
