Rochester people probably are sick of hearing this from NYC area (or Tri-State) people whining about the bagels around here. Brownsteins was a good option for many years when I would come out here for work but alas they are closed. Bagel Land is now the option... really small bagels and they don't have sliced lox (?!?!) just a lox-cream cheese schmear. I'm so glad our friend recommended this place to us because we're now obsessed! Last week I came in to order the bagel dog with cheese, however they didn't have any so they recommended that I try the bacon scallion cream cheese and I'm so glad I did! I love having it on a sesame bagel. It's so flavorful and the bagels remind me of bagels on Long Island. Despite the line being long, the service is quick so you don't have to wait for long. It's a small shop but they're very efficient. I kept getting sick from Philadelphia cream cheese despite taking Lactaid pills, due to my severe lactose-intolerance. However, I didn't get sick from Bagel Land's cream cheese after taking Lactaid pills. This is the first cream cheese I can enjoy again without fear of my lactose-intolerance getting the better of me. I have been buying my bagels at Bagel Land for a number of years. I love their bagels, and even at $1.25, the price is reasonable compared to other places which sell bagels. I read a review complaining that the bagels are small. Compared to the traditional bagels I grew up with downstate, the bagels at Bagel Land are huge. They are not supposed to be the size of a spare tire! Many people are obese in this country because customers think that bigger is better and want everything super-sized. Someone else complained that Bagel Land doesn't sell sliced lox. Bagel Land is a bagel bakery, not a full service restaurant. If the employees served slices of smoked salmon, the lines would be out the door every day! Even if you buy it pre-sliced, separating the pieces without ripping them to shreds is extremely difficult. It's not a task which lends itself to a fast-food takeout environment. Since the pandemic, it has been difficult for Joe, the owner to find and keep competent staff. There is always a help-wanted sign on display. The shortened hours started after the pandemic. Like Wegmans, Bagel Land never resumed its pre-pandemic hours There have been many times when Joe has been short-staffed. People call in sick, or just don't show up for work. Waiting on customers at Bagel Land is a decent job for a high school or college student, but not exactly a career path. While it would be ideal if young people were to treat temporary part-time jobs such as this as rehearsal for when they graduate and start work at their full-time jobs, and act as responsible adults should act, not everyone has been taught a work-ethic these days. There is bound to be turnover. Sometimes, Joe is all alone, trying to keep up with the steady flow of customers, hoping that the person working the next shift will show up for work. Like pizza, bagels started out as an ethnic food, but as it joined the mainstream, it adapted. Just as you would not find pizza with pineapple topping in a traditional Italian pizzeria, you would not find huge or cinnamon bagels in a traditional Jewish Deli. Traditionally, bagels were not toasted. If you want your bagels toasted, with sliced lox, and no extra wait, buy the bagels, take them home, and add your own cream cheese and smoked salmon. (Alas, nobody serves old-fashioned "belly lox", which was saltier and less expensive, because it was brined, not smoked. Smoked salmon tastes better, anyway. My relatives were too cheap to spend the money for the expensive stuff.) If you buy the bagels and do the work at home, you also save the NY State tax, which is levied as soon as an employee slices your bagel. You can call ahead to order, even if you only want 2 or 3 bagels. Go, Joe! read more

Their bagels are still amazing and their prices are really affordable. The bagels are always warm when I get them regardless of what time of day I go. They're delicious day of but just one day later they get pretty hard pretty fast. The only thing that I would change is I wish they were open a little bit later. They close at three and I always seem to end up in the area just past that :( But besides that, I love this place. read more

I've been a customer of Bagel Land for years and they've always been so-so. However, their old toaster broke a few months ago and they took forever to replace it. All of their customers were stuck with cold bagels. Blech. Joe finally got a new toaster but now everyone claims to forget how to work it when its very busy. How convenient. Ordered a cinnamon sugar bagel and they CLEARLY used salt instead is sugar. It was as disgusting as you think it was. When I called bagel land to tell them about the bagel, the young man that answered the phone responded with "oh ok". No sorry, no can we replace your bagel, no come back and we can correct this. Absolutely ridiculous! AND the toaster wasn't working to top it all off, so the other bagels we got were cold. I hate to "downgrade" a business in a review, especially one whose product I appreciate and to where I will most likely return, but our experience at Bagel Land yesterday was frustrating enough that here I am. When the young person who was making prepared bagels received our order (fire salt bagel with Sriracha honey cream cheese, egg bagel with maple bacon cream cheese, and cheddar chive bagel with spicy veggie cream cheese), they messed it up twice. The second mess up I didn't even realize until we were back in the car and, let me tell you, those bagel/cream cheese combinations do not go well as mix and match. I was disappointed that we didn't get what we paid for. They really need a better system for prepared bagels, though. Just calling out the orders is a lot for any person to try and retain. I will also give the young person who was working the benefit of the doubt and say that perhaps they were new. They were slower than is typical, couldn't seem to be able to tell the bagels apart (those three bagels definitely look different from each other), didn't ask for clarification before preparing the bagels, and the bagels were sort of weirdly toasted (but that could have been the toaster itself). But, to that point, if it's a busy Sunday morning (as pretty much every Sunday here is) and they have messed up a couple times, maybe pulling them to run a different task until the store empties out/the rush calms down is a good idea. Next time, perhaps we will try writing down our order to assist whomever is working. And/Or clarify what we've ordered even if we aren't asked. And hopefully I'll be able to update my review again! read more

Bagel Land in Brighton is one, if not the best, bagel shop in town. Great selection of bagels and the largest variety of cream cheeses I think I've ever seen! Nice staff that greet you as you walk in the door and are super fast and efficient. Parking can be a little tricky at times but people come and go fast so you shouldn't have to wait long for a parking spot, if at all. I love the bagels at Bagel Land. They are all very good and when warm can't be beat. My only issue is that they tend to wear gloves, handle money and pick the bagels with the same gloves on. You need to specifically ask them to use a tissue to pick and bag the bagels or they use the soiled gloves. Not a very sanitary practice. read more

Been coming here since the 1970s. They are a Brighton institution. Unfortunately, 2023 into 2024 has not been good to them. The current biggest issue is their baker, who is now routinely burning the bagels, especially the cinnamon-raisin. These end up dark brown on the top and charred on the bottom to the point where they are tough and bitter. Even the sesame bagels are just sub par these days. It shouldn't be hard to not burn a bagel but this is happening all the time. You will do better if you know what you want before you go inside. Lines can routinely go out the door and at least one employee is impatient and can be verbally abusive if you take up a lot of their time (they hate toasting your bagel on-site and are intolerant if you seem not to know what you want.) I guess you get a little NYC attitude along with your NYC-style bagels! On the good side, they are cheaper than the competition, which wants as much as $4 more a dozen. They have very little overhead. I hope they find a new baker soon. read more

I had a fun experience showing up here at 5am for a bagel. I was up way too early and visiting the area, so found this place and wanted to go. Service was very friendly and homey - probably because they were just opening. To decided to get two bagels with cream cheese. The bagels were pretty great and close to the style I like. Worst bagels in Rochester, if you want really good bagels then go to Balsam Bagels or order for pick up at Brownstein. I was out of bagels and Balsam was closed for vacation so decided to pick up a few at Bagel Land, big mistake. They are half the size of either Brownstein or Balsam. The Bailys were not only small but hard, Brownstein has the best Bailys, soft, huge and perfect in everyway. I would not go back to Bagel Land for anything.
