While other folks from the New Jersey/New York area might claim to be bagel experts, I'm definitely not one of them. That being said, however... I do love bagels, and love when I find a good bagel out here in California. These were good bagels. I've been in here two or three times now, and only once were they running pretty low on options. But they have so many bagel choices to begin with, it only made me have to think ever so slightly longer about what I wanted and it wasn't too much of a nuisance. Along with some unique flavors (cheese, jalapeno, etc.) they also have wheat and sesame wheat bagels, which I'm a fan of. They also have a cool variety of cream cheeses. I bought a small tub of strawberry cream cheese and ate it with a cheddar bagel on Christmas morning. And as weird as it sounds, the combination was DAMN good. The employees are always sweet and helpful. They get you in and out quickly, but I've never felt rushed or pushed at all. They also sell drinks that I haven't really taken a look at... juices, teas... and some other food items (full sandwiches) but honestly I just go for the bagels. Oh! And when I moved out here I wasn't prepared for how expensive certain things are in California. I came here once and bought two bagels and two small tubs of cream cheese and wouldn't have been surprised if I had spent $10-$12 for it all. But it was something like $6.50. Not bad! read more

Super tasty bagels! I got the pesto bagel sandwich with egg, turkey, cheese, and avocado. The bagel was nice and soft and I really liked the pesto on top. The egg was nice and fluffy and there was good amount of avocado. Even on a noon weekend, there was still quite a few people. There is a huge selection of bagels: everything bagels, cheddar, asiago, cinnamon, marinara, blueberry, chocolate chip, sun dried tomato, and so much more. They had a wide selection of bagels you can choose from, and a large menu to customize what to add in your bagel. I usually go for the asiago bagel with cream cheese. Go for the BSC Special and you'll get a chicken sandwich full of goodies--tomatoes, sprouts, cucumbers, pickles, avocado, lettuce. All super fresh for about $7. Bagel Street Cafe is an amazing family-run establishment just a half block from the Downtown Berkeley station that have good prices for bagels and breakfast foods. The Wallis is one of my favorites, which is a smoked salmon spread with onion, tomato, and capers on a dutch crunch roll. The food comes out pretty quickly so if you're always on the crunch on time like me, you're in luck. There are so many other varieties of bagels to try and it may be a bit overwhelming but my suggestion is to choose the one that resonates best with you initially! The toasty and crunchy first bite brings you a tremendous dopamine surge and the softness inside complements it well. All in all, 10/10 for a POC family-owned business and I hope to come back soon for a quick bite! read more

A hidden gem in Berkeley! This is a small, family owned business that serves quick breakfasts. They have many different flavored bagels, which can be toasted and spread with cream cheese upon request. The service is quick, the price isn't that expensive, and the bagels are GREAT! I recommend the Marinara and Asiago Spinach (I like the savory bagels.) The bagels stay soft and slightly crispy, and it's toasted perfectly so the cream cheese won't melt into a runny mess if you don't eat it immediately. One morning while frantically searching for a place to grab breakfast before work, I randomly stumbled across Bagel Street Cafe. I'm sure I'd seen it before, but this was the first time it struck me as a place to step in. Selection of bagels -- great! So many options and the bagels are pretty cheap! I reaaaaaally wanna try a chocolate chip one. They also have eggwiches -- bagels with eggs, and other things if you want them (such as bacon and sausage, mmm). I ended up getting the pizza bagel (when pizza's on a bagel, you can have pizza anytime! I'm not the only one that gets that stuck in my head anytime I hear pizza bagel, right?). Takes about 5 minutes to toast it with the cheese melted, but it's pretty yummy, pretty cheap (with pepperoni, $3.79), and the service is pretty friendly! All in all, pretty good! Scenario: You're on the west side of campus (VLSB, LSA, LKS, etc) and you only have 10 minutes to spare. Like you HAVE to be back on campus in 10 minutes. But you're starvingggg. So you consider your options: A) Starve B) Bagel Street Cafe, and of course you opt for B. The service at this bagel shop cannot be topped. When I order a toasted bagel + cream cheese I'm literally in and out of the shop in 3-4 minutes regardless of the length of the line, or time of day. And what's even better is that the bagels here taste great (like wake-up-early-to-grab-a-bagel-before-class great), and are a cheap bite (less than $3 with cream cheese). Love this place!! I work nearby and can always count on a great bagel to get me through my shift. I love their super combo with cream cheese, or a turkey sandwich on a rye bagel, depending on the time of day. Truthfully though-I have never had anything there that I didn't enjoy. Their breakfast bagels are huge-lot of egg, good amount of meat and cheese-definitely reasonably priced. Overall great food, but I haven't even begun to rave about the customer service. The whole team that works there are so nice and quick, they know what you want when you want in the door and have it for you in no time flat. I feel pretty guilty writing this review. I'm a big fan of Cafe Rio next door--actually, Cafe Rio used to occupy Bagel Street Cafe's current space--and just coming here felt like a betrayal. But I experienced the experience, and once was enough to ensure that I won't return. So why three stars? Well, it's efficient, and they do have plenty of bagels and bagel options. I must give credit where credit is due, but this place also feels like a downtown-financial-district-of-a-huge-American-city hole in the wall, but Downtown Berkeley is not Downtown Houston, or even Downtown San Francisco. A place here needs character, not an assembly-line mentality. I'm not talking about friendliness. The bagels and bagel sandwiches may be more expensive at Cafe Rio; but would you rather spend more money or chip away, however slightly, at your soul? The choice is yours. read more

My office is on the same street, so I'm here at least once a week. The family that runs this place is extremely nice and is one of the reasons I like coming here so much. The bagels aren't the best ever, but they're good, and there is a wide, interesting selection. I have had four types of bagel sandwiches here: - bagel with cream cheese: Can't go wrong, and they don't go overboard with the cream cheese like a lot of places do. - veggie bagel sandwich: This comes with plain cream cheese, onions, sprouts, avocado, lettuce and tomato. It can be really messy, but it's delicious. - eggwich with cheese: These are good, but the eggs are very plain. I always end up adding salt and pepper. - pizza bagel (plain and with veggies): I'd recommend getting the honey corn bagel for this! It's like a real pizza. This place is great! It's located on Center street between Oxford and Shattuck so it's very close to campus. It's extremely convenient for college students like myself to grab a quick bite before heading off to campus. The owner is extremely fast. He takes orders very quickly and multiple orders at a time! He clearly has a great memory. When there's a rush of customers, he works quickly and efficiently to get all the orders out. I have been here numerous times although I typically try different things on the menu. However, there are regulars that come to the place daily and the owner has all their orders memorized, which I find pretty impressive. In terms of food, there is a very large variety. On top of bagels, they have a lot of drinks (including freshly made orange juice) and pastries (including croissants, apple turnovers, muffins, cookies, etc.). I've tried most of those items and enjoyed them. When I'm in a rush, I usually just order an eggwich with turkey ham. They have a huge variety of bagels but I usually go with wheat or the asiago. They have some seasonal flavors like pumpkin too! The order will come with the bagel with a general amount of egg, meat, and cheese (which you can add on). Overall, it's a great combination for a breakfast sandwich and I can usually go enter and exit in 5-10 minutes with my order. When I have more time, I actually really like to order their pizza bagels. The pizza bagels are not referring to like the bagel bites but to full sized bagels. Once again, you choose whatever bagel you want and they cut it in half to make your two pizza bagels. They have a variety of flavors but they are all great! The prices for all the menu items are also very reasonable if not on the lower side for breakfast. Overall, this place is fantastic and you should definitely give it a try! read more

I've always been meaning to try this place because everyone always seems to be stopping here for a quick bagel fix. They have a huge selection of bagels and a large variety of bagel spreads. I chose the Banana Nut Bagel with Cream Cheese, toasted. They only take Cash if your order is less than $5. The cream cheese wiped out the banana nut flavor, but it was still a delicious breakfast. I was super hungry in between class so I stopped at Bagel Street for something really quick! I got a blueberry bagel with vegetable cream cheese and the bagel tasted really fresh and not too dense while the cream cheese wasn't too salty or unhealthy tasting. The bagel was on par with Noah's bagels. The wait time was pretty short, I was in and out of the store in 5 minutes. Something to keep in mind is that they won't let you pay with credit/debit unless you are spending $4. When I got to the register I was yelled at for trying to pay with card and told that I have to buy something else or use cash. So I bought an average tasting coffee to get my total up to $4.64. This is a great place! I've been coming here a lot for breakfast for a few reasons. 1. It's fast 2. It's pretty cheap 3. It's got great variety 4. It's really good quality If you come in the morning, there is a wonderful assortment of bagels. They give you a pretty good amount of cream cheese with your toasted bagel, which I, an avid cream cheese lover, can appreciate. My boyfriend is partial to the pizza bagel. Any bagel of your choice, topped in marinara, cheese, pepperoni (it's extra), and more cheese all toasted until it's melty perfection. This isn't fast though, so I wouldn't recommend ordering it if you're in a rush and late to class. Our favorite is the Eggwich Deluxe. It's any bagel you want, toasted with your choice of meat (I think ham, bacon, and sausage - but I always go for sausage), a ton of super fluffy yummy egg, and cheddar cheese. This place is great!!! They have a HUGE variety of bagels, although if you go later in the day, they won't have much options left. They're all GOOD and come in a variety of ways! I usually get the egg salad, since I'm a totally lover of eggs, and it's just...no words to describe it! WONDERFUL!!! They're really fast too so if you're in a hurry to get to class and need food, this will be the best place to stop at! Also, there is no credit card limit, from what I can tell. Good bagels and excellet Thai iced tea. On my first visit around 5 PM i had a plain bagel, and it was just ok, a little stale maybe. On my second visit around 11 AM, I had a garlic bagel toasted with scalion cream cheese, capers, lettuce and tomato. It was very good but if you are used to NY style bagels, these are not very noshy. When i asked if they were boiled first, they said steamed. My third try was just before noon. I chose the last salt bagel lightly toasted with butter, and it didn't disappoint. By 11:50 the place was packed with people getting sandwiches and bagel dogs. My suggestion is to get here in the morning and enjoy a Thai tea with your bagel. read more

Anybody who has read my reviews on Bay Area bagel shops knows that being from Jersey I am hard to please. This place, while definitely better than Noah's (an abomination in my book) is circling in the distant outer orbital reaches of the greater bagel galaxy. The do get high marks for variety, and if you go for something like a cheddar jalapeno you will fair better IMO than typical varieties. On the positive side the owners are cheerful and the service is excellent. I love grabbing lunch at this place, because it's conveniently close to the library. It's actually perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
