It was such a beautiful day that we decided to take the ferry over to Bainbridge Island. It was a pretty easy process. Make sure you pay attention to the current schedules as they change in the fall in winter. Cost was a little over $10 for an adult ticket and if you were over 65 it's half price so bonus for my husband. You pay on the way over to the island and it's free to return. You don't even need to scan a ticket. This is one of those ferries where you can bring your bike or even drive your car, but we found the island to be pretty walkable so decided to just get some exercise. They do have a little restaurant and shop on board as well as a bar It's huge and there is plenty of seating as well as a deck on top if you want some amazing views It was quite popular to be at the front of the ship as you were coming into either location to get some great views of both the island and then the return to Seattle They were spot on time so don't be late! read more

Pros: - Free ferry service for walk-on (e.g., not driving) passengers on the return trip from Bainbridge to Seattle - Ferry has great indoor and outdoor seating - Ferry and ferry terminal both have a selection of foods and drinks for purchase. The ferry galley itself offered hot soups and meals (like burgers, chicken tenders, fries.) Cons: - Senior/disability tickets not sold online - When purchasing from a ticketing kiosk, a senior fare is simply listed as "disability" rather than "senior/disability" which threw some seniors off. I knew that the fares were synonymous and identically priced, so I just selected this for my passenger buddy. Would arrive at least 15 minutes before departure from either Seattle or Bainbridge terminal. And, as the website suggests, most ferries have plenty of room. We took the ferry to Bainbridge Island a few weeks ago during a large family trip to Seattle. My friend recommended the excursion, saying it would be great for our boys, in large part because of the ferry. She was totally right. We had a lovely day trip to the island, bookended by scenic, relaxing rides across the water. We didn't buy tickets in advance and showed up running to catch the 10:40 ferry on a Friday morning. We thought we'd barely made it, but there was some leeway built in while passengers disembarked and we waited to get on. Purchasing tickets was quick and easy, assisted by the nice people working the booth. The ferry was spacious and comfortable, with tons of open seating across two floors. There was an elevator, which let us go upstairs with a stroller. We claimed a couple of tables by a window and took turns sitting and walking around the deck. The ride was short, only about 40 minutes, and the views were great throughout, but especially as we left the terminal. Seattle looks beautiful from the water. Unfortunately, our two-year-old was more interested in the old fan in the cafeteria than in the marvelous ocean views, and I spent a good amount of time chasing him into that room. On the bright side, this was how I learned that the cafeteria sold Uncrustables. We bought one to go, and it ended up feeding our picky five-year-old while the rest of us ate fish and chips on the island. The ferry deposited us a short walk from the main downtown stretch of Bainbridge Island, where we whiled away a few pleasant hours. We caught the 2:55 ferry back, arriving with enough time to line up and watch the bikes and cars get off and enter the island in a little vehicular parade. We were back in Seattle less than an hour later, closing out our afternoon with the wonderful Overlook Walk. If you're spending any amount of time in Seattle, I'd highly recommend a day trip to Bainbridge Island, doubly so if you have kids. I've heard it gets busy on Saturdays and Sundays, but our Friday ferry experience was smooth, peaceful, and fun. read more

Quick and cost-effective way to cross the Puget Sound from Seattle to Bainbridge Island and back. We went on a Sunday and it wasn't crowded, no wait to get tickets, which were $10 round trip. The terminal in Seattle was spacious with lots of seating and clean. You scan the ticket when you go, but they didn't check on our return. Lots of seating, as well as booth seating with a table if you want to have a snack of drink. There's a small cafe and vending machines on the ferry if you didn't pack any. It takes about 35 minutes each way, so plenty of time to get some photo ops. There are large windows all around and a top level where you can walk around, but it was super windy! This is located on Pier 52 on the ferry terminal. This is no small fairy. It is a huge with ample amount of space fairy you're able to roam around there is a sun deck. There's also an indoors they have restaurants they have bathrooms. They have a galley you could go all the way to the front part of the ship or the back part on two different floors there's tons of photo opportunities that you could take. The ambience is very calm as it is very open space the service they're constantly monitoring the boat you're able to just walk around or stay seated indoor or outdoor. The Bainbridge Island Ferry had me living out my Grey's Anatomy dreams. We traveled between Seattle and Bainbridge for an afternoon of wine tasting. We drove a car onto the ferry. On the way there, we got in line about 40 minutes early, so we were able to easily get onto the ferry. However, on the way back, there were a lot of cars in line, so we weren't able to get on the first ferry we were waiting for. The ferries were also backed up, so we waited in line for a bit over an hour. We were in great company, so it was not an issue at all, but it's something to be aware of if you're on a time crunch. There's a lot of unpredictability that can come with the ferry, so you have to give yourself enough time! Once on the ferry, we got out of our cars and explored. The ferry gives gorgeous views of the shoreline including the Space Needle and observation wheel. There's plenty of space inside with lots of tables and chairs. We got a little booth and played card games. The ride itself is so short that I actually could've enjoyed a little more time on the ferry. For an area adjacent to food service, this is unsanitary and unacceptable. She claimed I was past the cutoff distance, even though it was completely dark outside with heavy window glare, making that impossible to verify. She was rude in her refusal and then continued serving customers after me, which made the decision feel arbitrary. This is not the first or second time I've noticed this behavior from the same employee. For a public service, repeated unprofessional and inconsistent conduct is unacceptable. read more

One of the things I learned about Washington is that it is a ferry and boat town. One of the main things to do while visiting Seattle is take the ferry to Bainbridge Island. Price- My dear friend Christina actually drove her car onto the Ferry and once you drive your car onto the Ferry, you drive off onto the island. She also paid for all 4 passengers. The Ferry is very fast, it takes only 30 minutes to get across to each side. It's the traffic you will have to deal with. Weather didn't cooperate so we didn't explore the island much. We just went for Thai food and icice-cream and then back so I can't really tell you about the island. It was such a cool experience for a first timer in Seattle. The Bainbridge Island Ferry was my high school (Shorewood High School) girls water polo team's mode of transportation to and from the Bainbridge Aquatics Center when we competed there for high school water polo games in 2009 and 2010. It was one of our further competition venues, and we had fun bonding while waiting in line for the ferry and then getting pumped up for the game on the passenger deck(s). My friend and I were stunned by the beautiful views and the size of this ferry! This ferry is a short ride to Bainbridge island and you can buy tickets at their little window. You pay a little over $9 per person and you only have to pay to get there since the return from Bainbridge to Seattle is included. If you have a car, you can do advance reservation which is recommended online. Their ferry terminal is really big, has a lot of the tourist information pamphlets that have all the activities and areas to explore in Washington. This ferry is a great way to bypass I5 traveling into Seattle from the South or exiting Seattle to the South. If you are traveling from South to North on I5, it is easy to exit to 101 at Olympia or Route 16 at Tacoma towards Gig Harbor. I love the ferry for the novelty, the experience traveling that way in any weather, the choice of decks, and people watching. One time, traveling from Bainbridge to Seattle, I struck up a conversation stretching outside the car waiting in the boarding lineup in fair weather. The woman commented about a recent visit to Portland with her partner for a lecture. Because I was at the lecture, it was clear she was partnered with famous glass artist, Chihuly*. But she didn't name drop in that Seattle Scandinavian, Northwest anti-celebrity, and just plain not showing off way we do. They have 2 ferry vessels assigned to Seattle-Bainbridge. I traveled by the Tacoma launched 1996. I can't believe how quiet it was, and it is not a new boat. The Tacoma has 2 vehicle decks, an enclosed main passenger deck, with outdoor decks fore and aft. Above is the viewing deck with enclosed weather-shielded, semi-shielded, and open decks galore. Then above that are the fore and aft pilot houses. In the Sound, if you want wind and weather on your face and in your hair, you can have it. Great photo ops too! I think of the ferry as romantic. They have a little cafe run by a concessionaire. They even have beer and wine, but not for my early route. You can bring on great food, much better, like the trains in Japan, from restaurants and delis on shore at either end. The Washington Ferry is a government job. I have always found the employees solid and professional. That starts with the incoming traffic directors, to the toll booth collectors, line-up directors, boarding/parking directors, boat crew, and all the arrival directors. All professionals and safety professionals. They dealt professionally with a vey unusual boat grounding on that route too. The Washington Ferry system is built for bikes and peds with fast special embark and disembark. Long ago, a friend lived in walking distance of the Bainbridge terminal and worked in downtown Seattle for a job. That would be cool. While visiting Seattle we decided to take a Ferry to Bainbridge Island. I recommend Get there at least an hour and half before the time you'd like to leave, seems like a long time but if you don't you'll wait even longer for the next one. There's bathrooms and bring your snacks or you'll be paying $4 for water. Everything went smooth driving onto the ferry, after parking on there you can get out of your vehicle and walk around the ferry, have snacks take pics and even have beer and wine:) We arrived at Bainbridge in an hour which went by really fast, drove off the ferry and went exploring. We stopped At Pegasus Coffee(separate review) and then went walking in the area. On to the next, went to Fort Ward Park, took some awesome pics there and enjoyed the nature walk immensely. OMG this was one of the highlights of my amazing work trip to Seattle mid October. My friends from work and I went to Bainbridge Island for a couple of hours on our last day. I am so glad we did. We got lucky and our last day had beautiful fall warm sunny weather. We just barely missed the ferry we were planning to take. It was more confusing to cross the street to get into the ferry terminal than we realized, we had intended to give ourselves more time to spare but lost track of time at breakfast. Even for pedestrians, give yourselves extra time to get onto the ferry. The ferry is big, was clean enough, ran on time, and all of the staff seemed helpful enough. The views from the ferry were incredible. Just riding the ferry back and forth is a highlight of the trip. Bainbridge island was AMAZING, and I am grateful that the ferry is so cheap (you only pay one way, the way from the island to Seattle is free). The island made it well worth the ride. The ferry is public transportation so it is a bit grimy. We walked on but you can also drive your car on, but I understand that the line to take your car on may take a lot longer. If you walk on you get on the ferry no problem - they're huge! The ride over offers awesome views of the skyline as well as the islands. The seats were pretty dirty and some were broken, but they offer seats inside, outside, and outside in wind shelters. Many people brought dogs on no problem. On a rare gorgeous, sunny, and warm day in May in Seattle, just the photo opportunities were worth the ferry ride. The visit to Bainbridge Island was almost like an added bonus. The ferry was large - it could hold 220+ cars and hundreds of walk-on passengers. Once you've parked your car, proceed to the top deck to enjoy the ocean breeze and the beautiful skyline of Seattle. There are many photo opportunities along the way, but the best ones are within minutes of departure. Reservations are not accepted for this route and it's first-come-first-served. We went on a weekday morning and arrived 30 minutes prior to departure with plenty of time to spare. On weekends and during summer peak seasons, it is recommended that you arrive at least one hour prior to departure time to ensure that you can get on. Late comers will have to wait for the next ferry. The ferry was clean and well maintained. Bathrooms were clean as well. The cafeteria was closed due to COVID (or maybe a lack of business since travelers were not yet out in full force.) There were plenty of seats outdoors and indoors. The day we went, the vehicle decks were completely full but there were few walk-on passengers, so the interior felt very spacious and comfortable. Depending on what you plan to do on the island, I recommend just walking on if you're spending all your time in the downtown area of Bainbridge Island, which is walking distance from the port. The space on the ferry is large, fitting as many cars as possible and takes off every hour. On the ferry, you can purchase refreshments, from snacks to beer and the ride itself takes half an hour. Plenty of seats on board, with a viewing deck on top. Again, take visitors for the picturesque Seattle skyline, and walk on board if you're only spending time in the downtown area to save money. read more

If you are a native or a visitor I would recommend riding the bainbridge ferry at least once. The ambiance is stellar, there are great views from every part of the boat, but also weather resistant refuges and indoor spaces for those who would like to avoid the heat or cold/rainy days. There are clean and convenient restrooms and vending machines while you wait as well. Before covid it was so nice to grab a snack and sit by the window. However, even without a snack the view is worth it. The employees are always friendly and helpful. They were kind and helped us get on board efficiently whether by foot, by bike, or by car. The price is reasonable for the trip, about $20-30 a car and $6 additional for every passenger over the driver. Overall, a nice ride, beautiful view and great fresh breath of air. Definitely recommend this ferry trip if you are looking for a nice day trip or even an overnight adventure. read more
