If you're planning on doing a roundtrip to Bainbridge on the Ferry, account for around 3 hours for the Ferry portion. For walk-ons, they recommend getting there at least 15 minutes in advance. For driving on, it is recommended to get there at least 30 minutes in advance. The ferry runs roughly every 50-60 minutes - the schedule is posted on their website. For us, we decided to drive. On the way to Bainbridge, the car price ($27.81) included the cost of the driver, but we had to pay an additional $11.69 for an adult passenger. The kids were free. On the way back to Seattle, we just had to pay the car price (return tickets are free). We spent well over 3 hours with the ferry due to getting there early to enter the queue, loading/unloading, a delay, and then the transit time on the Puget Sound. For the queue, cars are lined up in columns with employees directing traffic. Once we parked, we were free to explore the upper passenger levels. The ferry is massive, so there is plenty of seating inside and a good amount of railing space on the outside if you want an unobstructed view. In my opinion, of all the different scenic spots we tried to visit, this ride gave the best views of Seattle. Restrooms on board. Coolest sighting - if you watch the water, every now and then, you'll see an Egg Yolk Jellyfish. They're bright yellow and grow up to two feet in diameter. Is it worth it? From Seattle to Bainbridge, flawless. We intended to be on the 2:10 scheduled ride back to Seattle. They started letting us on about 30 minutes late. It's currently 2:39 and just got seated. Highly unprofessional. No communication at all -- announcement about a delay, the cause, when we can expect progress, apology, etc. Let's see when we actually depart. Apparently, just found out it's pretty common for it to be delayed by an hour. Then they should adjust their schedule accordingly. People make plans around schedules! Writing this as a visitor to the area and left with a bad memory of the experience due to the poor customer service from the employee at the toll booth before entering the drive in line for the ferry. Be aware as you are driving in that you cannot change lanes once you get closer to the entrance and if using Google Maps it will automatically take you towards the walk in lane. The employee at the toll booth was incredibly rude and borderline berated our car full of women when he informed us that changing lanes is a ticketed offense in the area. If you're on Bainbridge Island, or ended up there while you were on the Olympic Peninsula, you'll find the Bainbridge Island ferry a convenient way to get (back) to Seattle. I use the Bainbridge Island ferry frequently (1-2x/week). See plusses, minuses and recommendations below. Plusses: - If you're on foot, the ferry terminal is a short walk from downtown Bainbridge. Give yourself 10-15 minutes just to be safe. - There is no fee if you're on foot! (It's free for everyone from Bainbridge Island to Seattle.) - If you're driving, you only pay for the car. Passengers are free. - The ferries leave frequently, about every 45-60 minutes, with a 35-minute crossing. - One really big plus for the Bainbridge Island Ferry terminal: there is food available both inside and outside the terminal! The food is offered by Commuter Comforts, and is generally of pretty good quality. The outside booth has limited hours (mostly satisfying commuter traffic), but the inside has extended hours, from very early morning until 5:30/6:30 p.m. - There's tons of paid parking just outside the ferry terminal if you're parking on the Bainbridge side. - There are a bunch of Kitsap busses that go to and from the ferry terminal from all over the Island. Unfortunately, they only run during commute hours. Minuses: - Driving can be problematic, especially on busy weekends. Even if you make it to the ferry on time, you may still miss the ferry if it is full. (Walk on passengers never have to worry about this.) The ferry entry lane can back up quite aways on 305 on busy weekends. - Ferry traffic enters off of 305 across Winslow Way, in the lane to the very far right. This is confusing since the ferry lane goes through, but the right turn lane is to your left. So, always stay to your right if you're going to the ferry. - You cannot turn right into the ferry terminal off of Winslow Lane. You can be ticketed for this turn. - Uber is hit or miss on Bainbridge Island, and if you're fortunate to get one, it may be expensive. Don't count on Uber to be there for you. - There is no taxi service on Bainbridge. Recommendations: - Since it is hit or miss whether the ferry you're planning on taking will be on time, especially on a busy weekend, get the WSDOT app. It'll show where the ferries are and how late they're running, so you can plan accordingly. If you're not catching the ferry again, or not for a while, you can always delete the app. - If you're in Bainbridge downtown, allow about 10-15 minutes to get to the terminal, with lights and such, just in case. - If you're staying on Bainbridge and flying out of SeaTac, you can catch the ferry across and grab a cab just below the terminal on Alaska Way. They have a $46 guaranteed fare to the airport (currently). You can also catch the Light Rail too (for $3!!), but you'll have to hoof it up the hill on Cherry to Pioneer Square. Arrive early to get onto the ferry, because there will be a long line. On that Sunday, the wait to get past the ferry toll booth was a very long hour starting at a little after 2pm. We lined up on the shoulder of State Hwy 305, almost at High School Road to wait. We finally arrived back in Seattle at around 4:45. Shortly after we parked inside the ferry, we were allowed to go up to the cabin area to sit, eat, and watch the view. The inside of the cabin had plenty of tables to sit at, and there was a cafe that had decently-priced food and beer. There were lots of seats outside, too, but be prepared for the wind with a jacket and hair tie. The restrooms has many stalls and were clean. read more

Sometimes, there are long lines and long waits, but it is generally an efficient way to get from to and from BBI and Seattle. What I love about all of the ferrys, this one included, is that they take really good care of those who are disabled. I know this from personal experience and am grateful. The discount for folks with disabilities makes a big difference when one travels by ferry a lot. It's usually a very easy ride across. Access to some scenery, food, bathrooms, etc. Most of all, it beats driving around across the Narrows and such. read more

This is a really cool place to check out when visiting Seattle. The ferry is inexpensive, and a great way to see the Sunset. You also get great views of downtown Seattle and Mt. Rainier. The ferry is huge and people stick their cars in it! It's a really cool sight to see. I would do it again just for the ride to Bainbridge. Very relaxing....on the Island there are some nice little places to eat and drink at. There's a nice little brewery a few minutes walk from the Bainbridge terminal. Came by as we took a day trip to Bainbridge Island from Seattle. It was a pretty reasonable price for the one way and coming back there isn't a cost so that was nice. I ended up here by accident after setting and forgetting the GPS and turning on an audiobook to get back to SeaTac, but I'm glad I ended up at the Bainbridge Island ferry terminal. It saved me an hour or more of driving and it was a lovely day for it. Lining up and boarding was efficient and I didn't end up having to wait around the block in line. A K-9 unit was working their way around and stopped at my open trunk as I was rearranging ahead of the airport. The officer seemed to be pointing the dog to look at specific items and parts of the car and asked me repeatedly if I had ammunition. I repeated that I did not, then realized the dog was very interested in the bag holding a new sheepskin rug that still very much smells like a sheep. Once I told the officer this she lost interest and moved on. Yes, ma'am, Fido is being a dog in this trunk, not an officer. She complete ignored the open trunk of the vehicle ahead of me, so I'm guessing it was the dog's intense interest in my farm-scented luggage that she was focused on. Getting into and off the ferry was efficient and organized as you would expect. On the debarking end I'm not sure the appropriate way to cross lanes if you need to go the opposite direction of what lane you are randomly assigned (I needed to go right pretty much immediately and was in the left debarking lane). The guy behind in that right lane also needed to change so it worked out, but that does seem to be an inefficiency in an otherwise very orderly process. read more

The Bainbridge Ferry is my weekend go-to because it's got the latest sailing off the peninsula. I often miss Kingston's last sailing and it's a fairly short hop to Bainbridge where I was able to happily sail home. It's pretty great being one of four cars on the entire boat. Ferries from this terminal generally seem to run more on time that others; that being said, delays are inevitable so what can you do? The best thing (for me) about sailing into Seattle on the Bainbridge Ferry is the view of downtown Seattle as you arrive. On a clear night it is so pretty. read more

We took the ferry from Bainbridge Island to Seattle in late December. Other than taking the Vancouver ferry to Victoria years ago, I don't have much to compare this ferry to. It is was quick and easy. We arrived by car. It cost me under $20. My wife and daughter were free because we were headed to Seattle. After paying, they told us where to line up and wait. While waiting, they had security guards and bomb sniffing dogs walk around each vehicle. They had employees directing traffic to get onto the ferry. The ride across the sound was about 35 minutes. The boat seemed to be in good shape. We didn't sink. Some people remained in their car all throughout the ferry crossing. We decided to go up on deck. There were plenty of seats available. The seats were clean. The restroom aboard the ferry was also clean. It was a good experience taking the ferry from Bainbridge Island to Seattle with or without a car. read more

If I thought the Seattle Ferry Terminal doesn't have much while it's under construction, the Bainbridge Island Ferry Terminal has about the same and it's NOT under construction. Doh. There's a small seating area, bathrooms, and vending machines. Outside, before entering the terminal, there's a coffee hut. That's your best bet for a better-than-vending-machine bite. It was still open at 7:30pm on a Saturday night. To wait in line for the ferry, there are two lines - one on the inside which is somewhat of an elevated tunnel and one outside at ground level. I see no benefit of one vs. the other unless it's raining. Ferry tickets cover round trip. There are no ticket scanners on the Bainbridge side; it's only on the Seattle side. Bainbridge Island downtown is only a 5+ minutes walk from the ferry terminal. It's very easy to go for a visit. The views on the ferry is of course wonderful. They were patient with my several questions and then helped guide me on where to go so I wouldn't accidentally drive off the pier. I was here back in June where I was on the island to run a half marathon. You can go through the ferry terminal building and use the covered elevated walkway to queue up for the next ferry or from the road you can bypass that building and continue on to use the small short ramp up to the front of the line. They will rope of the walkway to the ferry when boarding has been closed. There was a small bench near the front of the line. At the time of boarding, there were no ticket scanners for this ferry terminal. read more

The ferry service is always busy, with. Business and vacation travel, it's great to make for a quick day trip away from the city or just to explore the peninsula. It's a gamble where you end up parked on the trip, but you can always get out of your car and check out the great views from any of the decks, they have food and drink service available on the top deck. Not cheap, but quick to get you across the sound. I've been on the Brainbridge as well as the Kingston routes now. Fun to do occasionally as a traveler. Great way for a tourist to see a lot of the sights around the Seattle and peninsula. This time I was lucky enough to be almost at the front, so great views of the area from the inside of the truck. Schedule is posted online and usually on time or close, it can get very busy both ways at times, so don't be in a hurry, just enjoy the ride. One of many ways to explore the beauty of the PNW. If you've never taken a ferry ride, now is the time! I love a good ferry ride, especially when I'm able to drive my car on board. Definitely order your ticket departing from Seattle to Bainbridge online ahead of time. They have plenty of open slots for when you can depart, and depending on the time of day, and day of the week they definitely fill up quickly. The ride across is fairly smooth, and once you've parked your car, you're invited to get out and walk around on the ferry and enjoy the refreshing air. Keep in mind that during the colder months, that it's even colder out on the water, and days where there's any amount of wind, you will feel even colder. You can always stay in your car until the end of the ride if you desire. Yes, they do have restrooms all around the ferry. My only disappointment both going and coming back from Bainbridge is that depending on where they place you in line, and you end up parking your vehicle you may not even be able to get out of the vehicle. It poses some issues should there be an emergency and you need to get out and are not able to. I watched them park a vehicle that had a handicap placard next to a wall, and obviously the door cannot be open and the person cannot get out. This should truly be addressed on multiple levels. The ride across ( both ways) takes 30 to 35 minutes and time flies by quickly. It's a fun little excursion, and I'm looking forward to enjoying it during warmer months. read more

Quick, easy, cheap, and clean. So much room for pedestrians all over the boat. Doesn't ever feel full. We were on foot so I am not sure how many motorist can fit after cyclist and motorcycles. On the way TO Bainbridge there was a fee of I believe $17 for pedestrians. On the way FROM Bainbridge it was FREE for pedestrians. I loved watching the off-boarding when we reached Bainbridge. Large group of Cyclist first, all the motorcycles second, motorist 3rd and all of us hoofing it got off last. It was just fun to watch. read more

Ferry that leaves Bainbridge Island to Seattle all day. $24.05 for my sedan and myself. The view of the Seattle skyline was cool even though I've lived here half my life. Deck gets cold if you stand on it, even in the summer, so bring a hoodie or jacket. No services at this ferry terminal. Construction still going on at the Seattle terminal. We did the ferry as walk on passengers and throughly enjoyed our trip as a sightseeing method. The views of the skyline were amazing with the gorgeous Mt Rainer to the side. Bring a windbreaker as it's gets chilly and windy on the deck. The ferries left on time both outgoing and inbound. If you have out of town visitors, it's a cheap thrill especially for visitors who come from land locked states. This terminal is nice. The one at the other side in Seattle is nasty in comparison. Here, it is clean in Bainbridge. Seattle smells like urine and is riddled by homeless folks. In Bainbridge the inside of the bathrooms barely smell of urine, where in Seattle, the whole area does. It's user friendly and feels safe and comfortable. read more

With modern day technologies there is no reason to not be able to communicate delays on the ferry. We checked and the time of departure was going to be 2:35. At 2:20 the ferry left as we were running to catch it. Then a person working at the dock said the next one would be there by 2:55. So we stayed. It's 3:31. We are still waiting to head back to Seattle. Don't use the ferry if you have to catch planes, make appointments or go to reservations. Absolutely should have updates access to accurate times.
