Priority loading for medical/post surgery is a joke. Just had a total hip replacement at a hospital in Seattle and was ready to be closest to the bathroom on the lower deck. What did WFS do? Purchased tickets to leave Friday Harbor on the 10th of July and return to Anacortes at 1:50 pm. This was to be a return after what can only be described as an abismal trip over where the ferry arrived hours late and then made unplanned stops and then out of nowhere spent over an hour deciding to do a man overboard drill making the journey from Anacortes take over 5hours. The return was worse. We were told the Ferry would be late and that we should check back in 30 minutes. This situation continued to occur for 4 hours until the Ferry arrived at nearly 6:00pm. When they arrived the Ferry sat for over half an hour after everyone was off and did not allow anyone to enter the boat. After the incredibly long wait and literally no communication after failure after failure after failure to state when or what was happening we spent Four and half hours sitting in our car at the dock. Now for the worst part. I understand things happen. I understand delays. I don't however understand not providing any communication other than sitting on the dock and waiting for an announcement from a PA system of and when they decide to communicate. The contempt they have for all the people traveling is mind boggling. There are simple solutions that would fix these matters. 1. Send a blast text to all travelers when the boat is 30 minutes away to return to their cars. 2. Provide on the ferry website the GPS location of the Ferry and a regularly updated departure and arrival times. 3. Competition. Amazon, UPS, FedEx all have steeped in and proven that having things delivered can be done far superior to the USPS does it and with right on time communication 4. Get with Uber and door dash and ask them to provide code that provides up to date arrival information through and app on your phone. So easy to fix and so poorly managed that if I weren't older now I would start a competitive business and put them out. They are the worst ren business I have seen decades, truly a disaster. Ok. So this place is really cool! It's a WHOLE PEIR of shops and bars. Kind of like our Aloha Tower BUT 10X's better!! Why?! Because it's 5x's the size than Aloha tower. AND... it has a lot of games. It has a huge huge arcade and a carousel that runs through the day. On top of the giant wheel, the ducks clothes at 10PM every day. The price to ride the Ferris wheel is $19. You need to have time and patience the last couple of years to ride the ferry, especially on a holiday. But if you have the time and the money. I think it was $38 to Bainbridge with 2 adult passengers. Hopefully one day when the construction is done there will be more than honey buckets for waiting travelers. Based on a text that I got from a blog about how to best friend 24 hours in Seattle I decided to take this very round trip tonight the island. I also ended up taking the perfect trip just at sunset. If you're not from the area it could be a little confusing to find the entrance because there's a lot of construction going on. Luckily a nice local person pointed me in the right direction. The ticket was about nine dollars round-trip. I paid at the window and walked down the corridor. There was a line of people waiting but then I heard one of the attendants mentioned to another rider that he could go around to the side door so I just followed that person to go inside. That allowed me to board sooner and I have to wait in the line. The ride takes about 30 minutes. It was a beautiful evening but a jacket was still needed. The different phases of the sunset or gorgeous. Then on the trip back you get to see the beautiful lights of the city. When you get to the island did you have to get off and get back in line if you don't plan on visiting the island like me. If you don't want to pay for one of the more expensive harbor cruises this is a nice alternative. read more

All the cruise companies were sold out so I opted to take the ferry. For $9 I got a 35 minute boat ride over to Bainbridge round trip. The ticket is valid for one round trip within a 3 month period and it is flexible so you can choose whatever schedule you like. The boats aren't at 100% capacity yet so you wait in a very long line to make sure you get on. When on the boat you can sit outside, inside, walk around and go to different levels. You can even drive your car on or ride a bicycle on board. Lots of people have dogs too! A great alternative and honestly better than a harbor cruise because you get to go explore somewhere else. FYI...Bainbridge is quaint and adorable. read more

I was impressed by the on-time performance of the ferry service, the cleanliness of the ferries we took, and the friendly/helpful service of the ferry crew members. Washington has been running a ferry system longer than anyone, but if they had told me that yesterday was their very first day, I'd believe it. No one seems to know anything they're doing. For the past several years, I've asked when they plan on returning the Port Townsend / Coupeville run to two-boat service, they always answer "next spring". Once again, spring has come and gone, and they still only have one boat working the Port Townsend / Coupeville run. This makes a trip to Port Townsend virtually impossible - unless you reserve a spot several weeks ahead. Reservations fill up that far in advance. Want to visit the San Juan Islands? Plan a year in advance! Retired WSF employees blame mis-management for their lack of performance. Failure to simply think ahead is the reason their service stinks today, when at one time they were the best in the business. read more

We are so very lucky in Washington, for a variety of reasons. One of them is the ferry system. Ok, yes, during peak times it is a nightmare to get on, but if you time it right it's such a nice mini-adventure on the water. My usual ferry is the Mukilteo-Clinton run. The new terminal is pretty nice and the ride is a short 20 minute trip. Nice views of Mt. Baker on a clear day. Note that food service is very limited due to COVID. If the wait coming back to Mukilteo is too long, there is the option to drive around the top of Whidbey and get on I-5 for a longer return drive. You can also access a ferry to Pt. The cafeteria stopped providing water free. Now its is $4 unless you go to the fountain-not handy. Beware the toll taker who miss it when you say Senior rate. Check your ticket! Overall the staff is quite friendly! They willingly apologize for the idiot management decisions they have to deal with. I have loved taking the ferries when in Seattle! In March, took the ferry to Bainbridge with my boyfriend during the day and it was quite lovely ride. In September, went to Brementon with my boyfriend and coworker during the evening. The ride into Brementon was quite nice and not as cold as I thought it would be. Caught the last ferry ride back to Seattle after enjoying a lovely evening on the island. The late evening ride was very quiet; only a few passengers. The fee to go to an island is quite reasonable. There are few things I love more than being on the water and WSDOT Ferry system is a gift to anyone who loves adventure, even if it's a simple jaunt over to Bainbridge for the afternoon. As long as you know how to read a schedule and have the ability to plan around high volume time slots, you will rarely ever have an issue. I've found the ferry system to be very reliable, inexpensive, convenient, and comfortable. Do delays happen? Sure. Boats break down, pandemics happen, and traffic jams occur (just like anywhere else you drive). For me, taking the ferry is a big part of really enjoying Seattle. I've taken the ferry to Bainbridge Island. The ferry runs even in rainy weather. Everything is organized. There are nice indoor seats, but it's fun to stand outside even if it's chilly. The views are gorgeous even on cloudy rainy days. It's so nice at night also. The ride from downtown Seattle to Bainbridge island is around 35 minutes. You'll meet lots of nice people from all over. The cost is $8.50 for adults. The return from Bainbridge Island to Seattle is free. The ferry terminal has some snack shops, and you can get Ivar's chowders on the ferry. The terminal in Seattle is at Pier 52. You can get there easily by bus or walking distance from the downtown area and Pioneer Square. It's so nice on the ferry. The air smells fresh. read more

WSF is a greedy business that will take your money. I use it to commute everyday and they don't have any passes that accomodate military! Also, all the galley's except Puyllayup are out of service and some of the vending machines don't work. I requested a refund for a ride a few weeks ago and they denied it. The vessel I took had machinical issues. They said I don't get the refund because they notified people about it. (Attached picture below). I requested a refund for the 0530 am ferry which I did not get to board due to these issues. They notified their customers at 0545 am. I spent a weekend in Orcas Island for Mike K. and Gino G.'s wedding last month. It was a beautiful place that required some travel--we flew up from L.A. to Seattle, then grabbed the ferry in Anacortes and headed out to the San Juan Islands. This ended up being pretty enjoyable in itself. We rented a car with friends and had fun on the road, and the ferry rides were quite pleasant, gorgeous journeys across the water. All the annoying parts happened before we boarded our first ferry. Melissa K. took care of booking the tickets so I can't speak to that process, but it did seem like there was a danger of tickets selling out if we didn't book them far enough in advance. (Mike and Gino didn't bombard guests with pre-wedding emails, but they did make triply sure that we were aware that the ferry rides took planning.) We were also told we had to get to the ferry terminal an hour before departure--there was some scary language in the confirmation email that made us think they might close the gate on us. We were cutting it close and spent the last hour of our drive half shitting ourselves about the timing, only to find there was absolutely no rush. Not only were we not even close to the last car to arrive for this ferry, the trip was delayed for over an hour. Our return trip ran on time, at least. I'll also note that I was impressed with the cleanliness of the Orcas terminal bathroom, though finding the one stall in five with toilet paper was like that guessing game where you have to find the marble hidden under one of five cups. I liked the embarking/disembarking process--I've only ridden on a few ferries in my life, so it was kind of fun and novel. I also really enjoyed the rides. We rode on two different ferries, both with large common areas with little snack stands and tons of seating. The first ferry had lots of jigsaw puzzles, which I discovered too late in the ride. When I looked for a puzzle on our return ferry, there were none available. Puzzles on every ferry, please. Of course, it was nice to go outside and walk around the deck, taking in the views and admiring the various excellent dogs ferrying to and from the San Juan Islands. Any inconveniences aside, the Washington State Ferries are pretty great, and I'm sure I'd appreciate them even more if I lived in the state. If you have any interest in visiting Orcas Island, I'd highly recommend the trip. Book that ferry and enjoy your getaway. read more

While, most trips on the Washington ferry are going to be a good experience, on July 7, 2024, I had the displeasure of experiencing the worst experience and doing this as a tourist. I was stranded at Friday Harbor with my wife and there was no communication from the staff that the ferry taken us back to Orcas Island at around 5:30pm was not gonna to come. Nor was there any useful information from the ferry staff, other than if you want to get back you can try to give a donation to a sea taxi that I found out wanted to charge us $400 to take us back to Orcas Island. The outcome was a patron that previously experienced this suggested going to Anacortes after looking at the following website https://wsdot.wa.gov/Ferries/RouteAlerts/ (Google: wsf Travel Alert) and take the ferry to Orcas Island from there to make sure it comes. To shorten this review about my miserable experience. Anacortes staff was more knowledgeable, and astronomically nicer, than all the staff was at Friday Harbor. Unfortunately, ferry did not get Anacortes on time because I have to go to all the islands and pick up all the people that were left, excuse me stranded, at all the other islands. unfortunately there's more, 45 minutes or an hour after the 9:50 pm was supposed to have arrived it showed up, picked us up and got on the way to get us to all of the stops so we arrived back in Orcas Island after midnight. so this ended up being a two day trip. While, I will take the Washington ferry in the future. I now know to always have a back up plan taking it, and I now know about this website. But it would be nice if as an organization, they fix their issues and have back up plans for patron. read more

Spend 15-20 minutes and you are there!! The Whidbey island is a little more tricky!! The wait sometimes make you sit on the side of the road for a while!! It's the ferry line that goes way out!! Check the times and avoid that an hour or two wait!! My favorite is to Lummi island! The smallest tug boat like ferry! Crossing takes about five minutes! And you're there!! I've been taking the Bainbridge Island Ferry often during the past two yrs. during this Pandemic. For tourists, It's an inexpensive way to cross Puget Sound if you walk on board. The View leaving Downtown is beautiful. For one thing, the Ferry system did not fully Shut down since People on the Olympic Peninsula and on Bainbridge Island really depend on it to get to Seattle. During 2020, the 3 pm ferry was good to Social distance since only a few people were onboard. I took the ferry Roundtrip and went back to Seattle without exploring Downtown Bainbridge since certain businesses were closed. They also began to ask the Auto Riders to stay in their cars and not go upstairs. In 2021, they began to allow the Auto riders to go up to take a break. Their Cafe and seating area remains closed. They uses to sell hot dogs, popcorn, ice cream and snacks there. So bring your own snacks or drinks. There are Chip, Candy, Soda and Coffee vending machines. My last trip was New Year's Day, 2022 to get to the Clearwater Casino. The Casino provides a free Shuttle Fri thru Sun to Player Club Card holders. On New Yr's Day, They cancelled one regularly afternoon ferry, so I had to kill time for a couple of hours. People were either sick with Cvid or on their Xmas vacation so they lacked staff. They do require masks but not Vax Cards. But I've seen people not wearing their masks last yr. on the ferry and Husky Fans coming back to Bainbridge. But on the New Yr's Day Voyage, majority of the People wore masks. read more

When I am by the waterfront there is one thing I enjoy more than admiring the water. It is being on a vessel floating on that water. The Washington State Ferries was an enjoyable way for me to enjoy the Puget Sound between Seattle and Bainbridge Island. The Washington State Ferries excells as both a mode of transportation and a scenic ride on the Puget Sound. As a transportation mode it connects the Washington Highway system between the Puget Sound communities and Victoria, British Columbia with the City of Seattle. The Bremerton-Seattle ferry route, which is the 304 route is actually a continuation of Washington State Route 304 in Bremerton. The ferries shave off several miles to a commute. For example, If a commuter were to drive around Puget Sound on commute between Seattle and Bainbridge Island, that would be 92 miles each way. Also, the ferry system is a far less stressful alternative than the traffic problems on the freeways and state highways. I used the Seattle-Bainbridge Island ferry route as a ride across Puget Sound. The ferry terminal, which is in the vicinity of Pier 55 and Marion Street is convenient to Pikes Place Market and Pioneer Square. Just like any ride, the headache is waiting on line and departing with money. Once the ferry started, the views from the outside observation deck treated my eyes to a moving post card of the downtown Seattle skyline including the Space Needle, Pikes Place, and Great Wheel towering over Puget Sound. When I looked the other way, I'd see Lower Queen Anne and the hills above. And when I looked the another direction, I saw the small town picturesque community of Bainbridge Island. What I also enjoyed about the ferry ride is that within a few minutes I went from hanging out in the major city of Seattle to exploring the small town island community of Bainbridge Island. Because the ferry operates frequently, I was able to take my time exploring the central business district on Bainbridge Island. The Washington State Ferry is certainly a ride that I want to experience again. The next time I plan to ride the Seattle to Bremerton Ferry which is a longer route that where I could enjoy more time on the water and looking at picturesque views. read more
