These guys are AMAZING. I originally hired them because they were recommended by my home warranty company for our water heater replacement. They went above and beyond to install our new water heater correctly and up to code--Clint also inspected all of our plumbing by going into the crawl space to make sure the water heater was our actual issue. The old plumbing was also done incorrectly and they fixed this while they were here. They even built out a whole new compartment for the water heater (dry wall, vents, etc). I cannot say enough good things about Clint and Damien! They are also very good at small projects like building garage shelves and a workbench (which they volunteered to do after I asked if they might be able to). We had purchased a whole house filter from Amazon.com and we had intended to install it ourselves. Ounce we started thinking more about it we realized we needed some help. Our first try was to hire a local handyman but his installation was pretty bad. The system leaked and was done with crap PVC pipe. After that we were stuck pretty bad because we had to turn off the water for the whole house at times which was very inconvenient. We knew we needed a plumber so we started browsing through Yelp for plumbers. We are in Fairfax but when I saw the listing for Payless plumbers in Richmond I thought give it a try. We gave them a call and at first they said they were all booked up. But by the time we got off the phone they said they would try to shift other customers around. They called back shortly and were able to come out that very day. They installed the filter very professionally for a reasonable amount of money and it works great. read more

Very courteous and professional. All of a sudden my kitchen sink on the trash compactor size was plugged. Called Payless and got Clint right away on his cell phone - he offered to walk me through how to check to see if I could declog it myself over the phone which I thought was very nice seeing he was on the roof on another job at the time. Long and short of it he did eventually end up coming out and it turned out that a tumbler had fallen into the sink drain and was causing the stoppage. The tumbler was transparent so it wasn't obvious at all from just looking into the drain it appeared as if there was nothing causing the blockage at the entrance. After about a minute or so Clint stuck his hand in - something I was reluctant to do - pulled out the glass and voila! But here's the best part - I asked him how much I owed him for coming out and he said no charge! Heartily can recommend Payless and Clint and will certainly be using him when I have a real plumbing issue next time. read more

Clint is the BEST!! He not only fixed my toilet which had a longer chain than it needed to have causing water to continue to overflow whenever you flush the toilet but he even tweaked my shower pressure for me free of charge when he noticed it was lower than normal. Having to wait for my landlord's staff is always a pain and results in missing work since they come on their schedule, not mine. Clint fixed all these items in what seemed like a minute. I didn't think people like this were still around any more! We had a problem with a toilet that was leaking from the bottom into the floor. I called the number late enough that I assumed I would leave a voice mail message for a call-back in the morning, and found myself talking to a real person! I described the problem and where we are, and he said he was headed home from another job and could come look at it right away -- was it too late for me? I couldn't believe it. Clint arrived about a half-hour later, looked over the problem, and quoted me a price that was more than fair, especially for a late call with no notice. He fixed the leak, and we talked about how to keep it from happening again and how I wanted to repair the damaged floor. I gave him my card and asked him for an estimate to do that job later this year. From now on, Clint is going to be our go-to plumber. Oh Man! We had had our 2nd floor toilet plugged up for (embarrassed) MONTHS and with each week, we feared the reprocussions. I had tried gallons of Drano and even bought a 6 ft snake. Our bathroom tub wasn't draining, so we tried to snake it out ourselves, but managed to get the snake stuck in the pipes. I had my regular plumber and a handyman come out to look at it first; both of them told me that repair would have to be done from under the house, but that the crawl space was too small for them to work in. They told me I would have to rip out the floor or "find a smaller plumber". They could do nothing to help me. I called Clint in desperation, and he came out the same day. Even though he is about the same size as the other two men, Clint said he would have no problem doing the work. He has this kind of energetic can-do attitude that turned that whole project around. His friendly confidence was just what I needed to ease my heightened anxiety. Clint scheduled the work for the following morning, and was able to complete all the repairs that day, despite the very cramped conditions he had to work in. While under the house, he found some rotting sub floor sections and a broken vent; he took pictures of everything and patiently explained it all to me. When he was done with the repair job, he offered to snake out the main sewer line, and he even ran a camera through the main and talked us through the condition of our pipes. By the time he left, we had a good understanding of the problems with our plumbing and our options to fix them. While plumbing problems are no fun, working with Clint was an excellent experience. We found Payless Plumbing via ServiceMagic.com for one of our rental properties when the tenant complained of a clogged toilet and slow draining bath tub. Clint immediately contacted us within a few minutes of our submitting a request for a plumber, which was great. He was the most HONEST in giving us an estimate over the phone and went out to our property the next morning to inspect the situation and give us a more accurate quote (he gives free estimates). Clint's estimate was half the cost the other plumbers were quoting, saving us over $1,000! He was very responsive and patient in educating us and our property manager on what the problem was, his strategy for identifying the cause and fixing it and the cost depending on the extent of the damage and repair. Clint's pricing for smaller jobs, like clearing the standard clogged toilet, was cheaper than the other quotes we had gotten from other plumbers. Unfortunately, our job ending up being a big one, requiring 2 people and a full day, but Clint kept the cost very reasonable (vs. the other plumbers who exaggerated the situation/repair needed/cost), kept us updated on his progress, and stuck to his timeline. AMAZING!! Clint and his team did an outstanding job. I had some major sewer line work which required installing a new clean out and repipe (pipe-burst) my sewer line. As a owner of a plumbing company in the Bay Area, I can truly admire your craftsmanship. This is based on your photos only but I can see you put the love into your work and follow code. There aren't many companies that care about pipes being straight and neatly strapped. Also, you solder your copper pipes vs using crimp or pex tubing. Plumbing is an art and it brings me joy to see companies that cares how their plumbing looks, even though it will be covered or buried and maybe never seen again. Had a small leak in plumbing above water heater, next day it became much worse. Needed a plumber quickly, a friend recommended Clint, made a call and Clint was able to come to the rescue after he finished a job he was on. It was well after regular work hours but he came, drove from Richmond to ElCerrito for a part, fixed the leak and charged a very reasonable minimal fee. Why can't Yelp let us give MORE than 5 stars???? I gave this business five stars in September of this year and, after completing another job for us, I wish I could give them even more! We had monstrous water damage in our bathroom and Clint and Mark restored and repaired all the problems for a VERY fair price. They repaired the leaks in the bathtub and sink, completely replaced the sub-floor, bolted the toilet back down and covered the floor with new tile. And they worked until almost 11 pm. to get it finished! (This was within the 8 hour estimate they gave us and it was one dirty, nasty job.) For the first time in years, the plumbing in our bathroom is trouble free. The business name may be "Payless" but there is NOTHING cheap, shoddy or "bargain basement" about their work. We were limping along with our sad, leaky, barely functioning kitchen faucet. The appointment with the plumber to replace the fixture had been scheduled a week ago. Talk about door to door service. His office is right around the corner from the house I and restoring, so he going to get my repeat business forever. I hired him to work on damaged pipes and dry wall in the bathroom when he noticed something was wrong with the water heater in the Kitchen. The sleeve was incorrect on for the heater installed and was leaking CO2! When he went to fix the sleeved we noticed a breach in the actual heater from a bolt used to fasten incorrect sleeveing. The whole thing had to be replaced and I had a tenant waiting to move in!! He helped me get a good water heater while helping me keep the cost down from this unexpected expense. We found Payless Plumbing through the TheHomeFixers.com website. Clint Baker responded very quickly to our call for a local plumber in our area. We needed a new water heater. That was in January. We did not act on it immediately because the old water heater was still working & didn't seem to be leaking. By the time we decided to work with him two months later, his price has gone up by $200 as he has gotten very busy by then. We made an appointment with Clint to start work one week ahead but he found out he was double-booked a day before the appointment. He had to juggle his schedule and was able to keep our appt with us. He arrived on time on schedule with a new water heater, unloaded the water heater and immediately started draining the water heater with a garden hose he had brought along. While the water heater was draining, he went out to get parts and said he would be back soon. When he came back, the water heater was still draining and he said it should have been stopped by then as it was only a 40-gal tank and should not have taken so long. It so happened that the water to the house was not completely shut off - my hubby's fault - he didn't shut it off tight enough. After that was fixed, the water heater was finally empty. Clint said he didn't have his regular truck with him on that day, so he ended up going to the plumbing store two more times for more supplies - he found out his portable acetylene tank was empty for soldering, then he didn't have the correct length of stainless steel hose connections. The hoses were too long and we asked him to change them to fit the proper size. Clint was graceful enough and he went back to the same plumbing store for exchanges. Thank goodness we live very close to all kinds of hardware stores. We like Clint and Payless Plumbing and will do business with him again. We would have given him 5 stars if he had come better prepared with proper spare parts. His prices are quite reasonable and he is easy to work with. In the past four months I have had contact with three different plumbers regarding my Eichler slow drain. I won't name them right now, suffice it to say that I have put them on my DO NOT ever call again. I have asked for many references, got a few names and stumbled on Payless and Cliff. Conducted test, brought in EMUD to witness test and arranged for Stege (local sanitary district) to inspect clean out before closing up. The cut into the concrete was done neatly as was the filling, placement of the cover and mortaring flush with the driveway. Excellent Service and a Life Saver! Clint helped me out of a big time jam this evening! I got home pretty late from work to find that our Bathtub faucet had gone from drip-mode (which started 2 days ago) to a full out stream of water. (Of course this happens now as we're in a serious drought throughout the state). No matter how much I tried to turn off the water and put pressure the handle, it would stop for a bit and then just keep on pouring. Even though it was already 8:30pm I tried calling a plumbing company down the block... answering machine. Tried another, and got a hold of a nice guy but he wasn't about to make the house call this late. Then, I gave Payless a call. This should have been my first move, but truly 3rd time is a charm. Despite being after normal hours, Clint answered the call. He was about to head home for the nite from another job but was able to diagnose the problem over the phone [single-handle shower/bath faucet, Delta brand ... our "cartridge" had worn out.] I didn't know what this was, but I've since learned that this is the critical part that sits in the wall behind the handle. He came by the house and fixed our problem like a pro. Water was no longer gushing out of the faucet and we had water running to the rest of the house. So, I walk away from this experience very grateful for Clint's help, very thankful for his availability, and all the knowledge he shared in the process.
