The ambiance is more on the utilitarian side not super classy or trendy but where this place shines is in the food. We ordered the carne asada tacos and the chips and salsa. Everything was clearly homemade. The chips were fried fresh and brought to the table warm, and the salsa tasted like it had just been made. The flour tortillas were also fresh and full of flavor. Walked in and were seated right away. A couple across from us had what looked like tostada cups but they said it was the nachos. They looked really good and on the appetizer menu so I got them. Asked for the salsa flight but waiter said the prep guy did not come in that day so they had no salsa (none at all)! So o ordered the guacamole (which he competed). Also got a Jamaica juice that was so large I had to get a to go cup when we were ready to leave. The guacamole was house made but it did lack some flavor. It needed a punch of garlic and some salt. Only thing I could add was the salt from the table. Otherwise it was good and chunky. The nachos came out and they were massive. I was able to eat about 10 chips before giving up. My provider and I said we should have shared. They are loaded with meat, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, pico, and pickled red onions. Stopped in while traveling through this little town after looking for recommendations on Yelp. This is a great suggestion. The inside is very spartan and plain looking but don't let that fool you as the food I had was fantastic. The dining area is small with 3 booths, 3 high tops and 2 six seat tables. There was only two other parties when I arrived but the place filled up before I left. Only one waitress and one cook, so nothing happens quickly. I will say that the prices seemed a tad high to me for lunch, but not being from the area I don't have anything to compare them to. Chili's and salsa are not complementary so I passed on those. I ordered the Saazon Bowl. I chose the carne asada as my meat. It was $16. I had water to drink. Drinks here are $2.50. The food actually came out to me ahead of another table who was there when I arrived. It was very fresh and attractive. The carne asada was medium-rare and very tender. The bowl itself is a layer of refried beans, then white rice, then the meat, then fresh iceberg lettuce, and topped with pickled onions and queso fresco. You can tell that this restaurant is more contemporary because as someone else mentioned the inside is modern and sparse with only one picture for decoration. The music is at a good volume level. You do not get chips and salsa when you first walk in. In fact, if you want chips and salsa, you have to pay $3 for them. The tortilla chips seem homemade, but they are not salted. The salsa is very different than what you get at a typical Mexican restaurant. It's almost more of a vinegar base. It's got a little spice to it, but we really enjoyed it! My husband got the Sazzon Bowl. It was not at all what we expected. It was more of a salad with rice and meat in it. I got the shredded chicken tostadas. Our personal opinion is that the food did not have much flavor. In fact, the vegetables on the tostadas tasted watery like they've been soaking in water to keep them fresh, but the problem with that is that then they just taste watery and make the tortilla kind of soggy underneath. Decent flavor. It came with 3 tacos, and a small bowl of refried beans. The tortillas were blue, and I thought it was blue corn, but it's not. They are using food dye in the tortillas. My daughter ordered the BC Shrimp taco (NOTE: ONE TACO), my husband ordered the huarache (AGAIN: ONE HUARACHE), but it did come with a side of refried beans also and my son ordered the mulita (ONE. ITEM.). The refried beans were cold. My daughter ordered a bowl. All I can say is, the flavor of the food was good, but we all left there feeling robbed. The sodas were $2.50 each and they are served in a CAN. The taco, huarache and bowl, were all singular items and ranged from $9.00 - $16. The mulita was $10. Simple Mexican food in Alpine. We stopped by en route to Terlingua for an early dinner. Just a few patrons inside but our host / server J was very warm and welcoming. He made nice suggestion for our meal, and was quick to bring the food. We started with the stuff jalapeño peppers that came with different cheeses and some other stuff. About four these sliced in half. Pretty good. The chips and salsa are complimentary and we devoured the whole basket. Salsa was a little runny but the flavor was great. My husband got the carnitas tacos, which he said were slightly dry, but tasty. We definitely had to add salt, but I much prefer that to having over salted food which seems the norm. The guacamole was good - as was the salsa, but could had smaller onion chunks. ;-) The only down side was $3 for chips and salsa. That was a little shocking to us, but worth it- homemade chips, fresh, in house salsa. The atmosphere is clean and sparse... but clean! Easy to get to , and a million times better than the other options in Alpine that we've tried over the years and visits. Music was tasteful and not too loud, booth was clean and comfy! There were radishes on the guac and the Chicken tostados. I removed the radish to eat them. The waitress was having trouble with communicating, but had NO problem understanding the rest of the staff. The place was clean, quick, and pretty nice. About half the seats were taken, so suggest you get there a bit early. I started off with a Chili-Lime kind of agua fresca. It was strange, but in a tasteful way. Glad I tried it, but wouldn't have sought it out. We started with the gaucamole & chips. Not a lot of either, but they did offer to refill the chips. It had a powerful lime flavor which my dinner date loved, so it worked well. For dinner I had the chicken mole. I could go enchillada or emolada and had to go with the emolada. It was the RIGHT choice. The owner/manager came by and said it was his favorite. I definitely could see why. Authentic mole sauce was just wonderful with the flavorful chicken and sweet thick masa of the emolada. The rice & beans were way above average too so the entire thing went down well. To start things off I ordered this To-Go. I got the Elite Asado, Huaraches shredded beef, and the Sazzon Bowl. The Elite Asado has so many beautiful colors and was very well presented. The Huaraches shredded beef was a bright red color with avocado and pickled onions on top, The meat was good quality and I loved the beans served with it. The Sazzon Bowl on the other hand was a 0/10. There was barely any meat, and it had no flavor whatsoever, the entire bowl had maybe 15 ingredients and it all was bland. I expect there to be a lot more lettuce in it, and for there to be crips lemon flavor, cilantro to be more prominent and the lack of meat made it seem like I was just eating garnish mixed with beans. for $15 dollars I was a little upset. The staff were so sweet, and gave me some great tips on what to do in the area. There was a spicy salsa that I got to try, and I was glad that they told me that it was extra spicy because I would have been crying from the heat if not! Stopped by this place on the way to big bend, this is the only town before heading to big bend. The service is great and friendly. The food is mediocre, the waiter recommended the octopus taco that he said it's the best he had ever had. He said took 18 hours to make, then I found out that including 6 hours to thaw the frozen octopus and then 6 hours to marinate and 6 hours to cook. Well... I guess it means octopus is not fresh. The place had one couple in it and I waited for 28 minutes for them to tell me they didn't have cream cheese for one of my 3 orders. They gave me my ceviche and chorizo stuffed poppers. When I got to my rental, I realized they forgot to give me chips for the ceviche. I tried calling and they seem to not have a working number that continuously rings. When I opened the ceviche, it was not ceviche but more like a vegetable salad with walnuts, zucchini, celery, mango and 1/10 of it was actual little chunks of fish. This is NOT ceviche. It seemed thrown together with what was lying around the kitchen and the small amount of fish that they still had available. They could have just said they were out of ceviche too. I've been here in the past when they first opened and it was great. Sucks that this place isn't the same. I'm giving a 4 only because my first basket of chips were stale...booo...BUT, they immediately brought fresh chips that were the bomb. Also, the beans had a slight burn to them, but that can happen to any of us. The place is overall the BEST you can hope to find on the road: fast, clean, friendly & delicious.
