Well I messed up. I moved here to Sumter 2 days ago. My apartment is on the same street as Baker's Sweets and their tantilizing sign quickly caught my attention. I resisted the urge for all of 20 hours. Being that I'm in a new city with no friends and not much to do, I decided to indulge in some baked goods. A lemon bar, red velvet cookie, and fun-fetti cookie later, I'm full, happy, and satisfied. I'll be back, more times than I'll probably admit. So this was my first time to Sumter and I realized how soon I wanted to leave after I got here since there's not a whole lot out here at least I thought. I was looking for a coffee shop and of course breakfast and came across Baker's. Absolutely loved it. I had the Bacon & Bleu cheese stuffed burger which was awesome. I came back for a 2nd time had breakfast and which was also a winner. Coffee is great. Most of all the atmosphere and service was the greatest highlight. I now live in WV, but whenever I'm back in town, I make it a point to treat myself to their coffee. I usually get the spunky monkey and it is really good! I didn't think I'd like the banana flavor, but I love it because it isn't overwhelming. Can't seem to find anything with this exact flavor where I live now. I highly recommend going just for their coffee. I can't speak for the food because I haven't had any. The staff are very friendly and prices are reasonable. I grew up in Sumter and loved going to Baker Sweets when I lived there. However, yesterday when I went for lunch with my mom and grandma, EVERYONE we spoke to that worked there was SO RUDE. I could not get out of there fast enough. I have been a server before and there is no reason anyone should ever be as rude and sarcastic as these girls were. They most certainly should have stuck with what they are good at - baking cakes, pastries and cupcakes. The menu is void of originality and the food completely lackluster. Baked potato soup obviously from a can. Standard quiche tasteless. What a shame. Could have been so promising, but whoever put together the menu should not be in the food service business. Disappointing, with an existing business, the right person in charge of the menu items could have had a runaway success. This is the second time I have paid for a special order product from your establishment and been utterly disappointed!!! I will ensure to never enter your door again!!!! The baked goods are delicious! The coffees are pretty good as well. I prefer the Oregon Chai tea myself. Service ranges.Most of the time, it is great but there have been times one of the baristas in particular seems to feel it is a terrible inconvenience to take an order. It isn't as if I was making requests or changes to the order either. What I dislike about the place now is that you must purchase a minimum of $10 in order to use a debit/credit card. So, when I run in for a quick cup of coffee or treat, I have to have the Baker's Sweets gift card instead of swiping my debit card. I almost never have cash on me. Came here for dinner and the food was good. Only complaint about the dinner was that they had run out of a few items, which were of course what I wanted to order. Chicken and cheddar sandwich was good even though they ran out of cheddar and I had to have it with Swiss. The dessert part... Not as good as the food. I bought a vanilla cupcake with vanilla frosting and the frosting was so bad that I didn't even eat the cupcake. I don't know if it was old or what but I threw it out. Ordered two pecan pies on Saturday. Staff told us they would be ready on Tuesday at 4:00. Husband gets there and they can't find our order. So they give him two pecan pies out of the refrigerator "chill" area that has directions of how to reheat to warm up again. Very disappointed! read more

Great place for breakfast. I had the quiche with fruit. The crust was flaky and the pie was flavorful. My side of fruit included 3 huge strawberries, ample slices of oranges, and melon. My SIL had the breakfast skillet that looked delicious and it was confirmed to be so. My brother had a platter that was also delicious. In addition to the restaurant they have a bakery counter with the most amazing treats. I bought a three items to take home and sample - a brownie, an eclair, and a piece of caramel cake. All three were superb. I was afraid the cake might be too sweet, but it wasn't. Will definitely make this place a stop when I'm in Sumter. read more

Awesome pastries! Great service and since the menu has changed I thoroughly enjoy the breakfast and omelets. My all time favorite was the peach cobbler muffin!!! To die for but it is no longer available. The corn crab chowder is also a favorite along with the baked potato soup. read more

Oh...my...gosh...!!! Went to Baker's Sweets today for lunch and it was swwweeeeeeeettttt!!! I had the loaded baked potato soup - rich and creamy, a touch of red pepper (I think) and loads of cheddar...yum! The building is small but looks like a sandwich shop you might see in a downtown metro area. It was packed to the gills; with people coming and going for take out orders, too. Last but by NO means, least was dessert. I mean, the place isn't called Baker's Sweets for nothing. I had the most divine chocolate truffle cake I've ever eaten. It was a beautiful triangle of decadent layers of marbled cake with a white (was it cream cheese?) filling in between the first and second layers and a chocolate (moose like) filling in between the second and third layers. Coffee and pastries are over priced. The girls behind the counter have nooooo clue what they're doing. The cafe side was not fully equipped for making a latte so I got to order something else. I had such an unforgivably awful experience my first time here that unfortunately I will never visit again. From the front to the kitchen it was a disaster for me, and it was so bad that 3 strikes were delivered in one fateful takeout order. After ordering and waiting 20 minutes I was eager to fly home and eat lunch with my family. I arrived home and saw that the two slices of coveted cheesecake that I had paid for were missing. I flew back, and was met first with incredulity then a half hearted apology as my cheesecake was still sitting out on the counter. I flew home. The kids meal had two paltry pieces of chicken and a mound of soggy, unappetizing fries. His butter muffin that was supposed to be included was not there at all. My husbands' order of an Italian dip was ok, nothing special, and again with the soggy fries. My Reuben was ho-hum, with barely any dressing, and the broccoli salad I was looking forward to was replaced with- you guessed it- another freaking mound of gross fries. I'm too pissed right now to even try the cheesecake because if it sucks I'm gonna lose it. All for $40. I've been had!! I didn't have the energy to go back for the third time today or to give a spit enough to call and complain. Complain for what? A comp meal at a place that I won't go back to? Nope. Nopity nope nope. I'm so, sooo very disappointed as I had waited a while to finally try this place, it's close to home, etc. C'est la vie. :( read more

The food here is not especially exceptional. The menu is boring and not extensive. The caesar salad is not a true caesar salad, it comes sometimes with mixed lettuces not romaine. The chicken salad tastes like paper and is bland and the service is slow. Not exceptional, just okay for lunch. Coffee is okay, but the lady that works the coffee bar is not very customer oriented so it usually takes a while to get her attention. read more

As far as sweets this place is the best in town. A Starbucks is opening in town and I strongly urge you to skip them over and find this cafe/bakery just a few blocks over. Very crowded on a Saturday morning. Server was a little slow to take our order but efficient getting drink and food order at the same time. I eat at Baker's Sweets about once a month and am really a big fan of the place. Overall, it's an excellent restaurant and bakery. Favorite items include the vegetarian quiche, ciabatta club sandwich, and loaded baked potato soup. Within the last year they have expanded their space and their menu and I have been less than thrilled with the new offerings. I've had the chicken tenders, shrimp and grits, and today had the cinnamon roll French toast and while each one was good, none of those items excited me enough to have them again. The breakfast skillet that I had last month was quite good though. It really is impossible to "go wrong" with any item here though. Especially the desserts. Baker's sweet is a nice little bakery, they have a pretty good cake/cookie etc. selection, also a few different breads and coffee. I have never sat down to eat lunch there though, so I can't speak about that. They are always busy, so you might have to wait a couple of minutes, but the staff is always friendly. I would give 5 stars, but for some reason I'm not a big fan of the coffee beans they're using and getting the coffee always takes long. read more

I've gone to this restaurant on two separate occasions. First time I ordered a burger and fries.. It was just ok. My fries were not hot despite my explicit request. Apparently my waitress was new at the time and she was feeling over whelmed so she let the floor and never returned for my checked. We waited on her for about 20 mins before just asking another server to run the tabs. second time, I order the French toast huge disappointment. Sumter is super small and there aren't many options for decent food. Lots of folks around here love it and I have no idea why. My best guess is.. What treat to have this place nearby. The service is always stellar and the sweets are too die for. My favorites are the cakes, cheese danish, and the coffee toffee drink. We also take out their red pepper Gouda soup frequently. The cakes are a steal at the price they sell them for. The praline cake is what they are known for and it's almost at every party or function I attend. Any other bakery in a larger city would be double what this place charges for its baked goods. I also love trying all their gourmet coffees. Military Monday gives 10% of your bill. I am looking forward to ordering my daughters birthday cake here soon! read more

I had the best experience at Baker's Sweets. My wedding cake was ordered from them and let me stress, I was an out of town Bride from NYC. To say the least.... Their staff is very professional! Everything went so smoothly. The only bad side was they were unable to deliver my cake because they were booked up for like 3 months with deliveries( this how you know they're the best). The design of my cake was exactly like the picture and it was SOOOOOO GOOOD, it was the talk of the wedding! I HIGHLY recommend this place!!!!
