I adore visiting BS every time I visit my parents! The baked goods are heavenly; however, despite the coffee selection, they are all very weak in flavor. (I'm a coffee connoisseur, so I just travel with my coffee beans and grind them for my parents, so we can fully enjoy these sweets at home!) The staff is very friendly, and they are very timely with their orders! The prices are INCREDIBLY reasonable. I'd give a five star rating if it wasn't for the weak coffees. Before we relocated to Sumter, I told my husband if this town doesn't have a Target or a Starbucks then I don't think I could live here. Well, the town has neither and I got stuck here anyway, but I am so grateful that I found Bakers Sweets. I'm not crazy about it's location...only because the town needs to hurry up with all the road work on Alice Drive and sometimes the parking lot is a pain coming into. I love their muffins, cakes, and cannolis...though sometimes the muffins are a bit dry for my liking. The inside is cute. The service has always been fast and friendly. My only complaint is one time I had to use their restroom and one of their employees had just finished smoking something in there and left ashes everywhere...a huge no no in my book...but it's not stopping me from coming back. I love this Mom & Pop place! Anytime I have company in town, I have to treat them here. I avoid this place like it spreads the plague. The coffee drinks are usually horrible and never made right. The pastries are normally ok, but I try not to risk my heart. The last time that I went there hoping that this place had improved, i ordered my muffin and couldn't really taste much around the overwhelming butter flavors that were swimming inside. The coffee tasted like sludge. People joke that the truck stops have coffee like that and here was a place that did. I actually stop by the gas station for the coffee cravings now. I love it here. They have a great assortment of drinks and a great assortment of dairy substitutes. They also have a really nice assortment of baked goods and they offer gluten-free baked goods which was very important when my mother visited because she cannot have gluten she's celiac. And she was over the moon about this place because she struggles so hard to find sweets when she's out and about that accommodate her gluten allergy. And I have a difficult time finding fun drinks that have good Dairy substitutes and they offer a variety of substitutes which I find to be very important and I think that sets them apart from the chain coffee shops very well. I'm also a really big fan of local businesses so any time that I can find a local business that accommodates my food needs I will go out of my way to go to them and give them my business. I've visited this establishment many times in the few years I've lived in Sumter. Never had a bad baked good. The red velvet items can be a little dry other than that its all good! For a child's first birthday they will give you a free jumbo cupcake. Now that they've expanded not only in size but also the menu they have a coffee bar, larger dining room and baked goods counter also serve beer and wine. Service is always good but they can take a little while on the food when busy. Lunch menu is good but not amazing. Sandwiches are good and food is always fresh. Wish they were open on Sunday mornings bc if you want muffins and such on Sunday you have to buy them on Saturday. One of the few restaurants in the area I'm going to miss when I move. read more

I ordered my wedding cake from this place, gave them a detailed idea as well as pictures to work from. I placed the order and paid for the cake months before the wedding, the day, I also ordered a much smaller gluten free cake with simple roses on top....the day I picked up both cakes I cried, they looked HORRIBLE, the small gluten free cake looked like it had been crushed in the box so the icing was dimpled and the "roses" squished. Not only were the roses not true roses but just rosettes but the cake itself was very gummy, almost like it was undercooked. My wedding cake itself was an absolute mess, it looked nothing like the pictures or description I had provided but it again had Rosette's on top of it, not actual icing roses. I brought it to the attention of the "manager" and he took it in the back have it fixed, so I waited and waited and waited, finally it came back out with better looking rosettes but still not actual roses and now it had a huge chunk of icing missing from the top where they had tried to fix it. I was devastated and very upset about all of the nonsense, I was offered a refund on my smaller cake only and no compensation for the wedding cake. But I needed the cake so I purchased real live roses and removed the horrible rosettes that were on top of the cake and did my best to cover up the huge gouges in the icing and the now pound of missing rosettes from the top of the cake. My attempt worked well enough that I was no longer embarrassed for others to see the cake and it was consumed. Though taste wise the icing is sickening sweet and then they spray some sort of finishing spray on the icing that makes it taste salty and unpleasant. As for service from the case or buying coffee in general, service is very slow and they almost seem to ignore you. They are very expensive and just generally not great, when they first opened their small new store near pinewood they were amazing, now I guess they let greed get in the way and don't care anymore. I used to work in sumter and gave this place a try several times during lunch hours, mainly because of other recommendations. My overall opinion is that it is mediocre and over priced for what you get. They're charging big city prices for the lunch items sound good but are not executed as they should be or tend to be very bland. The bakery section is better than their restaurant fare. read more

Very disappointed in our dinner tonight. We came in at 7:30 and from the moment we sat down, we felt rushed. Our waitress, Kelsey was ready to get us fed and outta there as soon as she could..." Are you ready to order or do you need another second?" The food came out and was delicious as expected.....with the exception of my fiances bowl of soup...the one we were told was the last one...coming out cold! Not cool, cold. He didn't say a word, not wanting to be rude, figuring he would take it home and warm it later. The check was dropped at the table halfway through the meal...and she asked him if he wanted a to go Pepsi, as his glass was almost empty. He replied no, I'd actually like a refill.At this point we decide to get some dessert to take home with us, since the waitress was ready to go.... we didn't want to bother her with it. We normally have the famous pecan praline cake with ice cream. Once my fiance gave the waitress our check, he walked over to the counter to pick up some cake for us to take home. He was asked if he had paid for it at the table. He replied no, to which this young lady behind the counter replied sorry our drawer is already broken down... What! He broke down at that point and informed her that we felt rushed out of here the whole time. She said oh I'm sorry would you like to speak to a manager? Even when business is slow expect a long wait while they struggle to handle even a few customers. Bakers Sweets is the best bakery in Sumter. Seriously, the moment you walk in, you are hit with the aroma of sweet coffee lattes and 5-layer chocolate cake. They have a large selection of sandwiches, soups, and bakery treats, including danishes, brownies, cookies, cakes, eclairs, and muffins. You can order a slice or a whole cake or pie. The prices are very good for the quality that is served. I tried the red velvet cookie w/ vanilla icing and my wife tried the cheese danish. It was the freshest and tastiest confections we have tried from a bakery. The coffee is similar to Joe Muggs and the specialty drinks are very rich in taste and whipped up to perfection. I tried the Almond Joy coffee which really tasted like the candy bar. The seating is somewhat limited and it is usually crowded at all times so you will have to be patient. I would give them a zero stars but unfortunately Yelp does not have that as an option. My first experience with Baker Sweets (by the way, they came highly recommended) was with my request for a wedding cake. They took our money ($25) for the consultation but within a few hours (after leaving) we were informed that they did not have anyone to deliver our cake on our special day (seriously? so you did not know this when we filled out the paperwork/contract with you?). After pleading with them to work with us, Devin (manager) agreed to deliver it himself with the understanding that he would not & could not be responsible if something were to happen to the cake. Of course, he told us the alternative would be for us to have someone else (family/friend) pickup the cake instead (NOT!). After a lot of back and forth for several weeks (5-6) and numerous phone calls that never returned, we finally found someone else to make our cake for our special day. A few weeks ago, we were in Sumter again looking for a place to have breakfast...I guess I'm a glutton for punishment as I was intrigued by the great reviews this place had for their breakfast so yes, we decided to check them out and give them another chance to redeem themselves in our eyes; however, past behaviors usually dictate future behaviors. Our food came out cold (they weren't even that busy). Ordered eggs scrambled WITH cheese but instead we were served hard, cold eggs with a cold slice of cheese slice broken up into pieces and dropped on top. Requested a new order and yes, you guessed, they came out the exact same way! Funny how a few tables over from us, two young gentlemen who arrived way after we did, ordered eggs as well and their eggs were so fresh & hot, we could see (from across the room mind you) the steam coming out of the little bowl the eggs were served in. I began to think perhaps this was some cruel joke being played on us because it was incredibly hard to believe that with the great reviews this place gets online, were actually receiving the worst service ever (there were 4 of us). Although we never had the chance to ask our waitress to speak to the manager (Devin), he showed up at our table to inform us that he understood some items had been returned to the kitchen & proceeded to apologize for the chef's mistakes and then took $9 bucks off of our bill. I could on with this review but it's not worth it as me nor my family plan to ever patronize this establishment again...there are other decent, professional eating establishments in Sumter who actually care for ALL of their patrons. read more

Sandwiches are a bit pricey, but very good. In fact, they're so big, you can split it with someone, get a bowl of soup, and you have yourself an affordable meal. Soups are very good by the way. As for the sweets, they're good, but nothing to live for. I don't drink coffee, so I can't comment on that. Baker's Sweets is a failure in comparison to Starbucks, their drinks are MORE expensive than Starbucks and recipes are inconsistent, every time you order even in the "barista" (if you can call them that at Baker's Sweets) is the same person your drink will taste DIFFERENT and it will never compare to Starbucks. For their regular coffee they have a small self service area. The customer service is atrocious even if you are the only one there it takes several minutes to have your order ready after it is taken. I am always dissapointed when I go there and will be very thankful when I have a better alternative in Sumter, SC. Brick-street Cafe was a better choice, and much nicer atmosphere but their building was closed ---TRAGEDY! Asked for a for a lemon cake with strawberry cream cheese icing requested cream cheese icing several times to make sure they could do what I wanted. The cake was made with strawberry butter cream icing. When I called to complain about the cake I was told this is how we make strawberry icing. It would have been nice to know this before I paid 29.00 for a cake. read more
