We found four Female puppies on the side of the road and had no idea what to do. The ladies where so helpful and kind! They couldn't take one of the little girls because she was hurt but made sure we left with a plan to help her. My name is Virginia recently I went here and I really wanted to get a dog. The people that work there are really great and help a lot. The dog I wanted was not a match I was disappointed. But the thing that impressed me the most is just how much all these people care about these dogs. I really appreciate the honesty of everyone that works there. For some reason this review never go posted. I wrote it at the time and it auto-saved. Sorry it's a year late... Ok, so I called the SPCA on Wednesday and asked about a specific puppy. I talked to a woman named Daryl, and she told me that the dog was in isolation due to kennel cough and that she might be available Saturday and that I could call back to check on her status. So, I did just that. I called today (Saturday) and asked about the same puppy. They told me that the dog had been adopted since 2/26/2014. I was very confused because Wednesday was 3/5/2014 and Today was 3/8/2014. I asked why Daryl hadn't told me that when I originally called. I decided to have my husband speak to them and told the employee let me have my husband speak to you. I handed my husband the phone, and the employee hung up on us. We called back, and guess who answered the phone- Daryl. My husband was on the phone this time and he asked her why all of this happened. She said "hold on my manager is trying to tell me what might have went wrong." So, we waited and she told us that she never talked to me. I got upset because I was lied to. My husband talked to her and she kept up this scam. I will not be going to their establishments. Please do not get attached to any animal if you find it on their website because the same thing could happen to you. read more

ZERO STARS! I'm an emergency room nurse and I could have googled how to treat a dog and get my own supplies and done a better job than this place. I would probably have saved the trip and gas! The lady in the front (whoever she is) was very rude and COLD HEARTED! My dog may be small, my dog may have been old and sick, but MY DOG IS FAMILY. The chubby Latina or hispanic woman who gave us service was not helpful or heart warming in this time of our lives... She seemed as if she hated her job. My beloved dog for 14 years was sick and she wasnt helpful at all...please dispose of this woman, she is not good for your business! We left this place because we felt as if they would not treat our dog with respect behind closed doors. I would have got services done here if the staff had some EMPATHY. My dog was there when I had anxiety through nursing school and was there when I was sad or stressed...she was especially there for my dad mostly. It was hard for us ALL. The one thing that made us go to another pet hospital (with REAL VETS) was that they didnt allow us to take her home with us...it felt as if they would just dispose of her body in the trash. Indefinately, we left and will never come back. We will never recommend this place to any animal owner. I am utterly UPSET and heartbroken with how heartless people are. We love our Mini Pin pup we adopted from SPCA. She is healthy and had her puppy shots. We were mourning our older dog that had passed away 3 months previously. I told the young man working there about our situation. He said, "I have the perfect dog for you." It was love at first sight when I first held PollyAnna. Every single person we came into contact with was so friendly and appeared to be truly compassionate about animals. I would suggest you checking out the SPCA. read more

Worst !!!!!! Place!!!! Ever!!!! ... they are super rude and lazy. I took in a stray and they turned him down because he was scared ! Like really what do you expect ??? One of the receptionist had a really bad attitude, she didn't even talk to me directly; she also made it very uncomfortable. All I can say is that I am disappointed. I was thinking in donating to that organization but after the experience I went through I will not support them. I do appreciate that they are a no kill shelter but I feel that their workers need to be better trained or they should get new people to run their organization. Another thing I feel like they just take in dogs that are easy to handle so they don't have to do much, which is sad because all animals need a second chance! read more

Staff was extremely rude and didn't have any information on the dogs I asked about. I went to look at a litter of pups specifically and had to show them their pictures on their own website because they had no idea they had them. Wouldn't let me take two litter mates into visit room to see who I might want and when I went to adopt one they couldn't find their paperwork. I was made to feel like an inconvience when all I wanted was to save a life. Appalling. read more

Horrible staff! Not only were they rude, they had the nerve to lie to my face. They are clueless about animals. I have a small dog I rescued and I'm currently trying to find a rescue to take him in. Not even 30 seconds after meeting him, they deemed him aggressive. This little dog has not one aggresive bone in his body. Dumbasses have no clue what they're doing. They really should hire more compassionate staff. In a way, I'm glad they didn't accept my dog. God knows how they treat the animals under their care. read more

The people in there are rude- especially the front desk. I think they are burnt out from their work. I suggest that they get more training in customer relations. Also management should do periodic assessments on their employees. read more

I have never had a good experience here. My first interaction with the organization was at their book sale held at the East Hills shopping center several years ago. There were two workers at the counter chatting, and not one time did they acknowledge me, even though I was one of only two customers in the whole store. I never forgot that bad taste in my mouth, but did respect that they are a no-kill organization. Later, about four years ago, I had to give up two kittens. I tried to do the most responsible thing I could by giving them to the SPCA where I knew their lives wouldn't be at stake. As I arrived, I did not have a carrier, just a box. They were active kittens, trying to climb out, but I was standing there, comforting them, while waiting to be helped. All of a sudden, one of the employees yells at me over the counter in front of everyone, "Keep them in the box! They can't be out of the box!" It was very humiliating at an already difficult time. Since these incidences happened years ago, I made the unwise decision to give them another chance this week. Upon entering the kennel, I was distracted by one of the cats. A worker immediately rudely says "Excuse me" as she walked past. She gave no greeting, just a "get out of my way" attitude. I walked back through the room and told another worker I wanted to see a particular cat. But she misunderstood me and just stared at me instead of offering to walk the kennels to find the one. When I asked about another cat, she gave me the information and abruptly left to help a family who had already been helped. She showed absolutely no interest in adopting to us, or at least being friendly. I will never support this organization, and find it an utter shame that it is the only no-kill shelter in Bakersfield. read more

A A few months ago I got a puppy she was eight weeks old. there were a total of eight puppies. this puppy came from a parent who had a disease neurological.the background of these animals are very important .I have spent the last seven weeks taking this puppy to the vet at least once a week to the emergency she probably isn't going to make it so I've invested all of my heart and close to $1000 in this puppy. I am not happy and fear this is not going to have a good ending. read more

I have always thought the SPCA was a great facility that gave dogs a chance to find a forever home. We decided to go in today to find a dog for our home and found one we loved. My 6 year old and 3 year old were beginning to get excited but we had to come back with our other dog to make sure it was a good fit. We arranged for the meet and the dog was placed on hold. We brought our dog back and they had a good meeting. No aggression whatsoever and this is even according to the employee who helped us. We said we would think about it but as we drove away and we turned the corner onto Rosedale we knew we wanted to adopt the dog. I called and told them we'd come right back after dropping our dog off at home to adopt and gave them the kennel number. They said ok. When we got there another family was playing with the same dog and their dog. They told us we'd have to do a silent bid. There was never any mention prior that it was first come first served so I was put on the phone with the manager. She ended up awarding us the dog because of this miscommunication. Then an employee comes in who helped us with the greet and tells the manager our dog has possession issues (news to us) and that the other dog interacted better. The manager changes her mind AGAIN and gives the dog to the other family. My 6 year old was in tears. How awful for both families. This other family had been coming for two days and didn't realize the dog wasn't on hold for them. They had small children as well. This is the most unprofessional facility and I would never recommend going to get your pet here unless you're looking for emotional turmoil. read more

I found s a stray cat, and decided to bring it here. she told me the fee was $30.00, but there was no room for cats anyway. First of all, why am I paying to turn in a cat that is not even mine? Maybe if she would've asked if I wanted to make a donation, that would've been different. She then suggested I take it way across town to the city shelter. I then said, I couldn't do that and would just let it go (in my neighborhood). She said "you know what's gonna happen - it's gonna die! She then told the other worker "just take the cat!" I said, "so she's gonna keep it?" "Yes, you can go!" she said rudely. I would've been better off just letting the cat roam the neighborhood than driving across town, being chewed out and then having to pay $30.00! Lesson learned. read more

I have been a fan of the SPCA for many years, I have donated, attended and supported events. We adopted a older poodle back in 2005 or 06 that we loved until he passed and I have found several lost dogs and donated money to SPCA to take them to find a good new adoptive home. My Siamese cat died after 14 years and I was devastated. I went to SPCA to adopt another Siamese, everyone was nice and the nice lady at the front desk said if he does not work out be sure bring him back right away, please don't let too much time go by she said....... I agreed. I took the sweet cat home and my small dog terrified the poor cat. I felt so bad for this beautiful cat that I took him back even thought I wanted him so much, returned him for his own good. I knew this precious animal would be happier without my aggressive little dog scaring him. Both of my small dogs are rescues and lived in harmony with my late cat. I could tell this new cat needed in a "only cat" home for sure. It was depressing for me since I needed a cat in my life again. Well when I went back in to surrender him around 24 hours later to he could have a better "forever home", it was a terrible experience. the woman at the back desk was openly upset with me, she made me feel like hell. Told me I did not give it enough time and then gave the cold shoulder while she finished the return paperwork. She displayed that she was very angry with me She was a very cold and rude person. Yet no one even helped me or explained to me how to transition a full grown cat into a household with 2 small dogs??? I am a grown 60 year old woman who has cats and dogs in my home my entire life with success and all of my animals have lived their full lives in harmony until they passed away, successfully. After I cool off I feel I need to discuss this incident with the director of SPCA. There is reason for this negative treatment of me or anyone else read more
