There is nothing quite possibly as sublime as finding a great pastry while on vacation. There is also something magical about finding a rocky outcropping in the summer's morning sun, near the shores of a great water to enjoy a quiet breakfast. There's something even more special about doing all of this with someone you love, who also treasures this kind of an experience. And then, when all of these other-worldly elements come together, Mother Nature gives a little wink, and sends a big orca whale to that very shoreline to blow water out of its spout, rise, and slap their tail back into the water. This was my experience, and while it goes well beyond pastries, it was indeed enhanced by them. There I was, pulling up to the island on the ferry, in search of a breakfast, and Yelp directed me here. It's just outside of the main part of Friday Harbor proper, so it's not something I think I would have found otherwise. But that means that parking was a breeze. We went in, and saw the menu board first. You should note that not all menu items are available at the same time. The cases hold that which already prepared, and then pay attention to other menu items and what time of day there are available. We got here just after 8am so no lunch was ready. We decided on three items for the two of us; why sample only two? We got a ham and cheese croissant, a pecan tart, and a cheese claw. We resisted the urge to eat right away and instead drove to Lime Kiln State Park and settled in near the lighthouse. We found a sunny rock, sat down, and started digging in. With flaky and sweet baked goods in hand, we watched an orca surface out in front of us, and devoured each of our selections with excited energy. The ham and cheese croissant is a solid win for breakfast. It was warm, salty, sweet, and perfect. The pecan tart was sticky cinnamony, and nutty and made for a great meal topper. But for my money, it's all about that cheese claw. Cheese claw, cheese claw, cheese claw. We tried to show restraint but no sooner had the orca swam out of sight than did we finish our breakfast there on the rocks. It was one of those mornings that, in the dark days of winter or the long days at work, I will close my eyes and revisit in my mind, over and over again. read more

There are certain things you start to believe don't exist on the San Juan islands, one in particular being affordable food that is also delicious. This place finally proved it is possible. To top it all off, we had customer service that went above and beyond. We went in around 10:20 am on a monday wanting two things, key lime pie and pizza by the slice. Upon entering we found out pizza isn't normally made until 11am, and the key lime tarts had not been made yet. The very nice girl at the counter said maybe she could push some things through for us. She asked us what pizzas we were looking at, and checked with the baker, and then said within 10 minutes we could have our wish come true. She also said they would make sure the key lime pies were done before our Ferry time so we could grab one for the road. Since I still wanted something sweet I grabbed an apple tart. It was best to wait about 20 minutes so the crust could soften. So very good, and I don't normally like apple pastries. The filling was an almond paste. The pizzas we picked up were the Caprino fresco, and the La Prima. The Caprino was very light with peppers and fresh basil and arugula. The lemon oil drizzle added a zesty element and the mozzerla blended it altogether. The la Prima really made the artichoke the star, and it was so rich and flavorful. The crust they make for their pizzas is also amazing. Chewy and bubbly, thin, but not limp. It's perfection. Also pizza by the slice is a quarter of a pizza, so the prices they have are super reasonable. Fast forward before we have to catch the ferry, we run in grab our keylime which is ready just like they said...and we order two new pizza's. The potato pizza and the island pepperoni. The potatoe pizza stays away from being bland by encorporting jalapenos and Gorgonzola. The island pepperoni look simple, but is a flavor bomb. The pepperoni has a great spice to it, and the Gorgonzola adds a fun element, while the mozzarella keeps it from being over powering. This place is a true gem on the island, and it also has ample seating and a view of the airport. read more

Parking: Private lot. Pizza is served starting at 11 AM, but we wanted to get going on our hike so we got breakfast goodies around 10:40 AM and came back later for pizza at 2:00 PM. By 10:40 AM, they were already out of cheese claws, almond croissants, and ham and cheese croissants. The menu board is just a teaser of what could have been, so just focus on what's actually available inside the case. They forgot one of our items in the morning, but gave it to us when we returned in the afternoon. If you don't have plans to circle back, double check your order before leaving just in case! Sour Cream Coffee Cake $4: We were intrigued by the sour cream part, but it still tasted like a standard coffee cake. Peanut Butter Cookie $3: A little dry in my opinion. Oatmeal Molasses Cookie $3.25: It's actually oatmeal raisin and I haven't had one of those cookies in forever, so I really enjoyed it. We got another one our second visit. Lemon Tea Bread $6.75: This was my boyfriend's pick to make up for missing out on our first choice pastries. Maybe I'd feel differently if I sat down and had this with a cup of tea, but as a morning pastry on the go I wasn't into it. Banana Bread Loaf $6.25: Another pick by my boyfriend. I generally feel neutral about banana bread in general so I didn't care for it much. Croissant $3.75: It was nice and flakey. Would have loved to try it heated up. Or with almond or ham and cheese. Sigh. If only we had woken up earlier. Island Pepperoni Slice $6.50: The house made pepperoni was interesting. The texture was more similar to sausage but still sliced thin like pepperoni. I don't really like sausage so I'd get regular pepperoni next time. The blend of mozzarella and Gorgonzola cheese was really good. The crust also had a lovely crunch. The pizza slice is heated up when you order, and they sliced it into 2 pieces to fit into the to go basket. Caprino Fresco Slice $6.50: I just tried a bite but didn't really like it due to the red peppers. I was too lazy to pick them off, so let my boyfriend have it all. Roasted Pecan Chocolate Chip $3.50: I think I had bad luck and didn't get any bites with pecan in it. Palmier $2.50: I just tried a bite since I don't usually eat palmiers, but it tasted the same as I remember other palmiers tasting. ***** My Star Ratings: 1 Star - Terrible. Just thinking about it makes me angry. 2 Stars - Meh. Unlikely for me to return. 3 Stars - OK. Open to coming back, but wouldn't go out of my way to. 4 Stars - Yummy! Will definitely return if I haven't already. 5 Stars - AMAZING!!! Would plan my day or even a trip around eating here. read more

This was the highlight of my stay in Friday Harbor. I had the cheese claw and a roasted pecan chocolate chip cookie. I loved the rich cheese claw with the crispy pastry flakes on top. The cookie was delicious too. I really wish I had come here for breakfast so I could have enjoyed it more than once. I also got to try the salsiccia pizza for lunch. It was so flavorful! A must stop! Don't think twice just go try everything! We ended up coming here twice but I could have eaten here everyday. Literally everything from here was delicious. I can't even decide which pizza I liked the most because they were all top notch. The cheese, potato and mushroom were all amazing. Trying more than one is great idea. The key lime pie was wow! I don't typically like lime or lemon desserts but this one knocked it out of the park! The brown butter apple tart was good but not my favorite. Apples just aren't my thing but if you love apple pie get this! I also tried the almond tarragon cake. I forgot to take a picture because I ate it so fast. I wasn't too sure about the idea of it. We stopped by here two days in a row. Pizza had delicious crust. Mushroom and the Primo were a touch sweet for my taste but everyone enjoyed it. The sausage was delicious. My only complaints are that we wanted to get some sandwiches to go to bring with us on our day trip around the island but they don't start making them until after 11am. Took home a frozen salsiccia but got there too late for the sourdough. They did have the multigrain so we got one and had it sliced. We are from San Francisco with many great artisanal bakeries and Bakery San Juan ranks right up there with the best of the best. The multigrain seemed very dense but was very well balanced with a nutty chew and great flavor. It was wonderful fresh, toasted, and made great sandwiches as well. The pizza was awesome... I followed the baking instructions and it turned out perfect - thin crust, quality toppings, and wonderful sauce. They are fastidiously following COVID protocols and the bakery itself is spotless. Great thin, crispy crust pizzas - many with unique toppings. Service is super fast since they just toss the already made pizzas in the oven for a few minutes. And they sell it by the slice. It's the only place on the island we have found where you can get a meal for under $10. If you go at noon, I recommend you brave the line that goes out the door as it moves very quickly. They have ample indoor and outdoor seating as well. read more

Exactly as another Yelp Reviewer has written - this place is an island gem! I dream of the food from here and cannot wait for another opportunity to go back. My boyfriend and I stopped here for lunch just before the noon rush. There were plenty of options available, all looking very delicious and appetizing. As someone who does their best to consume as little meat as possible, I was very pleased to see multiple vegetarian pizza options. Immersed in the smell of baked goods and pizza -what a beautiful combination- we ordered pizza, a cookie and a loaf of bread. Travis got a slice of both the Island Pepperoni and Potato pizza, while I got a slice of La Prima. We were both very surprised and delighted to see that a single slice of pizza was actually two slices of pizza - very awesome lunch portions! Travis loved both of his pizzas, simply calling them "amazing." I was able to manage a bite off of his potato pizza and enjoyed it, but the La Prima is by far my preferred slice! Garnished with fresh basil, red chile flakes and artichoke, it was a very light but definitely filling flavor of pizza. As for my afternoon dessert, I got one of their Oatmeal Molasses cookie - sooooooo good. I would pay the ferries it would take to get back just to eat that alone. It's large, has a great balance of oatmeal and raisins and it's not overwhelming sweet despite sugar being half its name. We have slowly eaten through the loaf of multigrain bread we bought. We actually managed to bring some home. It's a great loaf, but a little savory for my personal liking. I definitely prefer to eat it with a spread, but it's still a very good and hardy. The atmosphere of the Bakery is nice too. Ample indoor seating with bright windows to let all of that summer sunshine in, with some outside seating available too. I believe the bakery has been in business for just over ten years, but it looks brand new. Definitely, definitely coming back. read more

One thing I really appreciate about Bakery San Juan is that they have tape lines on the floor and signs all over about keeping social distance. They also have contactless payment and fiberglass dividers set up so we felt super safe visiting, even though they seem to stay very busy with people coming in and out to order. The ham and cheese croissant was one of the best I've ever had. My husband is a big sharer and I could tell he was being quiet because he wanted the croissant all to himself. Lol I had the cheese claw, a take on a cream cheese danish that was flaky and decadent with a lemony finish. Next time I'll try a slice of their delicious looking pizza or pick up a loaf of bread, some cheese from their cooler, and a bottle of wine. I really don't understand all of the great reviews on this one When you walk in, they have a large open space with nothing in it. It could use some tables (Covid is over). The lights are so dim in that area that I could barely read the caulk board with the food items so I gave up and went up to speak to the employee behind the fortress of walls. The employee looked annoyed that I wasn't sure what to order. I had never been there before, how about selling me something? I'm there to spend money. Well that wasn't going to happen. I just ordered a couple things I could see through the case. I thought that both pastry items were fine but nothing special. Came here for breakfast at 8am on a Monday. Drip coffee is fine. At the time we arrived they didn't have all their pastries out yet and said it would be a 1.5 hour wait for chocolate almond croissants, so I was a little disappointed. The selection was pretty limited when we were there. We tried their cheese croissant which is a sweet pastry with cream cheese. My dad tried their ham and cheese croissant. I got a berry streusel muffin which was fine. Nothing amazing. There was lots of table space for us to sit. The bathroom was overall okay but the sink was strangely very dirty, like someone had washed dirty paintbrushes or something in it. read more

The girl behind the microphone seemed annoyed that we were asking for things that were sold out (which we had no way of knowing since it wasn't notated anywhere) and was just kinda rude, which made the whole experience worse. Good Grub here. My kids enjoyed the treats that they ordered. It's a small establishment. They are now expanding maybe to grow a little larger. Not what I had expected.
