Finally made it to Brown Bean Baking, it was top of our list to try in Orcas Island but had to wait until the last day of our stay to try it and it was worth it. We got Veggie Quiche and Croque Monsieur. They were both sp good. I would definitely eat more veggie's if they tasted this good. Visited twice during our stay on the island. There was always a line when we visited, but it would move along quickly (~15 min for baked goods, longer for coffee). Definitely an influx of customers based on ferry arrival times. Plain croissant was alright, and we really enjoyed the peach croissant. Peach was from a jar, but tasty nevertheless. Fantastic ham and leek quiche. There was also an apple sausage pastry, which contained a split chicken apple sausage. Not the best room temp, and would probably pass on this. Would recommend any quiche, as well as interesting flavor combos that stand out to you. If you do order a savory, would recommend taking it home to heat up. Some staples, but a rotating array of pastries between our two visits. Before we left, stopped by again and got the orange morning bun - very tasty. Could definitely taste the orange zest in the sugar. Had I access to a toaster oven, this would have been even more incredible... Super friendly staff! What a treat! We visited on a Sunday morning and while many businesses were closed for the off-season, Brown Bear Baking was a cozy and welcoming spot. I used to love my trips to Orcas (especially when I would come out to ref volleyball) but it has been years since a visit since our family moved to Idaho. I was excited to visit Eastsound and did some research on the current food vibe. Being a caterer/baker myself I was super excited to check out Brown Bear Baking and "treat" our group to some of their bakes. Sadly we were pretty disappointed in 2/3 of our purchases. First of all, the sticky bun was underbaked, doughy with no spring to the roll. I will say that their "sticky" was delicious. On the other end of the spectrum the blueberry peach almond coffee cake was burnt and extremely dry. My daughter did enjoy her peanut butter cream filled sandwich cookie so, points for that. What makes me sad is that I am not sure when I will get a chance to return to see if it was an off day for them and also, food prices are SO high it is disappointing to basically throw away $15 worth of food. Lastly, I am not sure what it is...but what happened to "service with a smile"?....it seemed lacking at most of the places we patronized yesterday. read more

I have to say, what's all the fuss about? This is a perfectly acceptable bakery, but all the praise makes it sound like folks have never had a croissant before. The long line really isn't worth the anticipation for what was a so-so Apricot Danish, and a below par Ham & Cheese Croissant, where the ham was a single, tiny wafer thin slice and I didn't taste the cheese until about 8 bites in. The anticipation was killing us to get here because they're only open certain days of the week, but it was certainly worth the wait. Their pastries are delicious. The service was great and friendly. We even came a little later in the day and they still had plenty of stock. However, the faces at the register looked bored and uninterested at 8:00 in the morning, no greeting, no smile, no friendliness...as if they'd worked a 13 hr shift! Not even a "thank you" when we checked out. We bought our coffee at Teezer's, at Island Market, instead of giving more money to fund their lack of customer service. I had questions about their coffee offerings and decided it wasn't worth engaging more than necessary. Love this bakery! We came here for a birthday trip and I picked up a little fruit tart as a birthday treat. It was perfectly sweet with fresh fruit, tasted fresh even though I picked it up later in the day! We came back here the following day for coffee and pastries and had a wonderful time. The pastries are delicious, some of the best I've ever had. There is an outdoor seating area as well, dog friendly so we enjoyed the sunny space with our puppy. Overall, I'll definitely be back. Wow wow wow! If you're on Orca's Island this is a must stop place! From our delicious vanilla and hazelnut lattes to the mouth water salmon & veggie quiches, to the crisp and delicious Pain au Chocolat (chocolate pastry) everything was delightful. The croissant that had me coming back for more every time though was the croissant pêche! It was the perfect balance of fresh fruit and sweet pastry. The staff was kind and offered recommendations of their favorite dinner spots on the island. The vibe of the bakery was welcoming and had indoor and outdoor seating! The only "downside" was they had a smaller menu at the bakery than we found online. This may have been due to the fact we went on the first day it had reopened after winter break though. After an eventful and beautiful camping trip at Moran State Park, we stopped here for some breakfast treats before heading back on the ferry to Anacortes. It's nestled right in the heart of the small downtown area, and it's hard to miss with a decent courtyard of people all enjoying the yummy treats in the sun. So many yummy looking treats on display.
