We tried their Garden swirl and the famous Almond Butterhorn. Both were not that buttery and somewhat bland but we liked them as what they were. Their pastries were good to go for our bike trip. We visited the next morning again before boarding the ferry and this time we had the fruit scone. The berries in it were very juicy. We really enjoyed sharing this scone. Thanks Holly B's bakery for helping us to creat such lovely memories on Lopez Island. We fell in love with the Island even more thanks to you guys!

Really good bakery. Not super sweet, which I really liked and the brownie was really yummy. There could be more variety though.

Lopez has a pastry bakeshop again!…read more Back in the 20thC Holly B's was everything. Over time tastes and ownership changed and the cinnamon rolls morphed into something that were sad. But finally, I returned this weekend to check out the new thing in town and WOW! We are back in business. The cinnamon smell wafting out onto the front porch was promising. And the bake goods delivered on that promise. New flavors sure, (bacon-gruyere hooray!) but the pastry is flaky, the moist breakfast quick breads are packed with flavor (hazelnut-spice), the cinnamon rolls have bounce again and there are even tasty options that are gluten free. Also snagged some fancy spiced granola and planning on ordering holiday pies. The bakeshop on Lopez is back. And I now have pastry flakes I need to go vacuum up.

To be honest, it could and would taste better if it was served warm aka microwaved for 20 seconds. The flavor of this savory scone was decent. Texture wise, it was dense and somewhat dry. Because it was served cold, after the fifth bite, I had a nostalgic déjà vu feeling, I was back in my fifth grade and sitting in math class after PE, where the classroom was full of a bunch of boys' sweat and smell That's how a cold savory cheese scone tastes and smells to me. So if you're ordering it, perhaps ask the staff if they can warm it up for you.

I tried the honey ginger matcha (with soy milk), a pretty decent drink for fall. The ginger added an extra touch of spice to the matcha, yet it wasn't overwhelming. I'm not a coffee drinker so what sells me is unique drinks, worthwhile to visit. We tried the pistachio white chocolate mocha and rosey matcha. I loved that they gave me the option to add whipped cream for the mocha to make it more aesthetic and complete. The mocha didn't have much notes of pistachio but it was fairly sweet and creamy. The rosey matcha had a more apparent flavor but otherwise felt fairly standard for a matcha. There's another major coffee shop in Lopez Island nearby, so either here or there would be good candidates for coffee or other drinks that are more innovative than the standard I wish they published prices for the seasonals since we were left to guess and wait for the total, in which case may be awkward to ask for a breakdown of the drink prices. For my visit, we paid $12.31 approx for 2 drinks

I've never had one so amazingly light, soft and perfectly just-sweet-enough. Wonder if they will ship them...? We stopped by Leaven for breakfast one morning on our trip getting a savory crêpe each and a couple pastries. Didn't even make it though breakfast before we knew we had to do a repeat the very next day because it was so good. Crepes are French style and are clearly made with skill and talent. The space is bright and cheery with very friendly staff. I see other reviews mentioning waits during busy times or complaints but experienced nothing of the sort. We were a bit off peak and didn't have that issue but I can honestly say I'd be HAPPY to wait for the food at Leaven. This is really something special and whoever is behind it has a gift.

Our photographer suggested Leaven as a place we could take photos at since we love going to cafes together. We ordered a Cauliflower Crepe, Cauliflower Danish, and Matcha Latte. The crepe was delicious! I love have a savory crepe once in a while, and this crepe had the perfect amount of creaminess from the cheese, crunchiness from the cauliflower and onions, and freshness from the arugula. The same could be said about the danish. They had great components of a creperie/cafe. The Matcha Latte though, was not up to par. It seems it wasn't whisked well, so it tasted grainy. Overall, not taking a point off for it because what they specialize in was so great! Besides the food, the space was pretty lively. During our photoshoot, there was live music and every table was taken up. Leaven seems like a great space for a hangout or catch up with someone. Honestly, If I lived in the area, I would always be down for their crepes.

I was excited to visit Eastsound and did some research on the current food vibe. Being a caterer/baker myself I was super excited to check out Brown Bear Baking and "treat" our group to some of their bakes. Sadly we were pretty disappointed in 2/3 of our purchases. First of all, the sticky bun was underbaked, doughy with no spring to the roll. I will say that their "sticky" was delicious. On the other end of the spectrum the blueberry peach almond coffee cake was burnt and extremely dry. My daughter did enjoy her peanut butter cream filled sandwich cookie so, points for that. What makes me sad is that I am not sure when I will get a chance to return to see if it was an off day for them and also, food prices are SO high it is disappointing to basically throw away $15 worth of food. Lastly, I am not sure what it is...but what happened to "service with a smile"?....it seemed lacking at most of the places we patronized yesterday.

The service was warm and…read morethoughtful, and the personalized touch to our place settings was such a lovely surprise. You can tell this restaurant cares deeply about craft... not just in execution, but in intent. The menu didn't feel like it was trying to cater to trends or preferences. It felt like the chef had a clear point of view, and the food followed that vision. I appreciated that a lot. The salmon and veal were both beautifully executed. And though we don't drink alcohol, we were offered two beautiful non-alcoholic pairings (one sparkling, one rose) rather than the usual soda fallback. It made us feel cared for, not sidelined :) Pastry-wise, the brioche, olive oil cake, and macaron were all excellent. I'm lowkey regretting not staying until Sunday to try the pastry pop-up. Before the final course, we were offered a lemon and lovage sorbet as a palette cleanser. Somehow it made me laugh because it reminded me exactly of a Chinese herbal remedy (藿香正气水) I used to take in the summer in China. Not a critique, just a funny flavor memory I wasn't expecting in a fine dining environment and so uniquely contextual to my own cultural background. That said, for an elevated experience, I do think every touchpoint matters. And this is why I'm taking off one star. The bathroom missed the mark. The lights are on a timer (which I didn't realize until they shut off while I was inside and I thought it was motion activated. I ended up waving my arms like a wacky inflatable tube man haha), and somehow there was only one paper towel left, and the soap dispenser was visibly dirty. Small details, but noticeable in an otherwise polished evening. All in all, this is clearly a passionate team doing thoughtful work. With just a bit more attention to the details beyond the table, it could be truly seamless.

This place was absolute perfection from start to finish. Relaxed but upscale environment. Friendly, knowledgeable and attentive staff. The sommelier was also great. He was so clearly loving his job and it showed. He described each wine and its characteristics with enthusiasm and excitement. This was the first time I'd ever had wines that were so nicely paired with each course. Quite eye opening, for me at least. You can take a look at my menu pics to see what each dish was and its accompanying wine. However, keep in mind the menu changes often and they close for the Winter season in November. We had the very best time and if you're in the SJI and like good things, this is a place you must go. We plan to come back again soonish. Thanks!
