I have fond memories of visiting Holly B's as a kid--I mean, who can say no to fresh baked treats?? Craving a peaceful Sunday to myself I took a day trip to Lopez and had to stop by. I arrived a little before noon and there were several options to choose from... sweet pastries, cookies, bread and a couple savory baked treats as well. Slightly overwhelmed (and very hungry) I asked for a few suggestions. After hearing some of the staff favorites I went with a baguette, almond butterhorn pastry, and molasses cookie. (I normally try to eat plant-based but couldn't resist the nostalgia.) Off I went to the beach, after picking up some spinach artichoke dip and plump blueberries from Blossom Grocery. The baguette was delicious, definitely my favorite of the three! A delightful texture and flavor. It was perfection dunked straight into the spinach artichoke dip. Needless to say I inhaled half of the baguette in one sitting--the remainder was enjoyed as toasts over the next couple of days. Later on in the afternoon I went IN on the almond butterhorn. This pastry was recommended heated up, which I believe would be a good choice if you have the option. The helpful lady behind the counter offered to warm it for me, but I was planning on consuming it after a slightly more healthy snack aka baguette, dip, and blueberries. Anywho. I'm glad I tried the butterhorn, but I typically prefer less sweet options and would choose to try something different next time around. Since I was on a roll, I made quick work of the molasses cookie after dinner. The cookie was a generous size, plus it was both soft/chewy as well as flavorful. I would happily enjoy one or three of these again! Prices are pretty standard for island goods, and the shop itself is small so take your treats outside, that is if you can resist chowing down immediately. I am looking forward to visiting again soon, hopefully this summer with my family! read more

Back when Holly Bower (the original Holly B) owned and ran Holly B's Bakery, the place was vibrant and fantastic, with so many delicious breads and pastries on its shelves that Ms. Bower even published a book of her favorite recipes, "With Love & Butter: An Island Cookbook and Memoir." It was common to see long lines of happy customers snaking out the door. But since the bakery's sale in 2016, things are not the same. Having visited Lopez Island for the past twenty-plus years and having partronized the old Holly B's regularly, it's a pity that the new bakery's pastries are nothing really special, merely passable. We noticed this last year but thought we'd give the new owners and bakers a chance to get things up to speed. Not so. I wish the new Holly B's had changed its name to something else since it's really nothing like the old Holly B's that many who come to Lopez have grown to love and support over the years. Still, in the "friendly island" spirit of Lopez, I'll give the new place three stars. The bakery is only OK. But it certainly isn't Holly B's. read more

We tried their Garden swirl and the famous Almond Butterhorn. Both were not that buttery and somewhat bland but we liked them as what they were. Their pastries were good to go for our bike trip. We visited the next morning again before boarding the ferry and this time we had the fruit scone. The berries in it were very juicy. We really enjoyed sharing this scone. Lopez Island was a stop along our San Juan sailing junket. We planned to be here on Saturday morning to coincide with the farmers market and stopped by Holly B's for sustenance. The business is a small, walk-up window and there was a line but it was worth the wait. Cinnamon roll was incredible, brownies were fresh and awesome, and the ginger snap cookies were every bit as good! I've been coming to Holly B's for as long as I can remember and it's THE place to start your morning on Lopez. Going to Lopez without a cinnamon roll from Holly B's is unheard of in our family. Not too gooey, not too dry but just right. They are filled with plump, sweet raisins and almonds. They are not too sweet either...they are the perfect, classic, cinnamon roll. The ham and gruyere croissants are also quite good and the marionberry cheesecake bar I tried for the first time was excellent!! Be sure to bring plenty of cash because you can't use your plastic at Holly B's. read more

To Holly: We love your bakery--the quality of the product is usually simply delicious and we have come many times over the years. We just visited the bakery and were asked to use credit card rather than the cash I was offering. Then she asked me to tip. Then instead of the 10% I said clearly, I was cheerfully thanked for the 20% button she pushed. We won't be using credit cards again and certainly not tipping the next few visits. Very disappointing. Best. Cinnamon rolls. Ever. It's perfectly crusty on the outer side, moist and soft in the inside. There are sliced almonds and raisins with each layer. It's definitely sweet, but not overly so. It's highly addicting - my boyfriend and I kept going back and Shared three over the course of a day. We also tried the Nutella brioche, but it was a bit bland, dough texture wasn't so special, and a bit dry. If you are visiting this place I would suggest sticking with their famous cinnamon rolls. Cinnamon rolls with no yummy white glaze? Sad and confusing. After I got over that disappointment, I ordered a ham and gruyere croissant, which did not disappoint. It was perfectly warmed and very flaky and soft. The Almond Butterhorn that I shared with my boyfriend paired perfectly with my Americano from the coffee shop next door and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. One would expect a bakery to sell good bread. Holly B's does that. We paid $6.15 for a small loaf and it was worth every cent, if not more. Their baked goods looked sensational and the young bloke who served us spoke to us of his breads in the same way as a seasoned sommelier would talk of wines. Funny story: my wife and I decided to eat breakfast here, but being a super hungry bicyclist, I had about 4 different types of pastries. We had an open tab here and just kept getting more and more. One of my coworkers, who frequents Lopez Island, said to me "you MUST go to Holly B's while you're up there." She said it as if it's an order, a life-or-death sort of situation...you will eat the baked goods at Holly B's or you will DIE. To be safe, we ate there once a day. YOU NEVER KNOW. It started innocent enough - we were up on a Wednesday and we wanted to take home pastries for Thursday morning's breakfast. He got a rhubarb and berry pastry, I got the cheese and salsa pastry. Thursday morning's breakfast ruled. Friday morning, we figured that we needed to carb load for the hiking, so we went and got some more pastries to go with the coffee - in this case, a bran muffin filled with raisins and cherries for him, a cinnamon roll for me. I heard they were famous. A note on the cinnamon roll - this was one of the best I've had. Instead of dousing the sweet, sticky bun with cream cheese frosting like everyone else does, they stuffed it full of raisins and almond slivers. The cinnamon and sugar formed an almost caramel glaze. It was light and not oily. I want to live on those. Saturday morning, we wanted a bite before the Market - you don't want to be around food while you're hungry, right? The boyfriend got the chocolate croissant (SO GOOD) and I got the andouille sausage croissant. The difference, btw, in croissants alone was amazing - his was a sweeter pastry, mine was definitely more savory. (I kind of wanted a cinnamon roll again, but you know...the waist line and all that...) Sunday we decided to hit them up before heading to wait in line for the ferry. We got one each of their rugelachs - one lemon, one raspberry. SO GOOD. And now it's Monday and I'm back here on the main land at work...and all I can think about is those pastries. Asked for wifi password they said they don't give it out, to go buy some coffee next door and the coffee shop will give it to me (what??) then the two attendants looked at each other and kind of shared a laugh. Every year my partner and I attend his family reunion on Lopez Island and every year the family begins Saturday morning with a trip to Holly Bs. Holly Bs serves up homemade hot and fresh sweet and savory breads and pastries. And to keep it simple they only offer regular or decaf coffee. Our staple is the ham and gruyere croissant followed by an almond butterhorn and washed down with an 8oz black cofffee while sitting outside on the family style benches and tables. The croissant is buttery and flaky and filled with the right amount of cubed pieces of ham and melted gruyere. The butterhorn is sticky and sweet and densely loaded with butter and slivered almonds. The coffee is how I like it: hot, black, and strong. And the service is fast and friendly and efficient. Any place that rocks out to Bowie at 10a.m. is A-Ok in my book. Holly Bs has a cozy homey central meeting place feel to it and it really is. Sit here long enough and you'll more than likely run into just about everyone who lives on the island. Every year I look forwards to my annual visit to Holly B's and it never disappoints. So next time you're on Lopez Island during the summer, stop by Holly B's in the morning and then head on over to the Saturday market afterwards. If only they had a location by the ferry terminal. What a wonderful spot that would be to wile away the hours while waiting for the ferry. read more

We have been coming here for over 25 years. It used to be amazing. There is new ownership now. Our two cinnamon rolls were very dry. And the rest of our purchases were ok. The bread we got was good. The other big disappointment we got was the attitude and service we got from the female manager. I overheard three other groups today also commenting how attitude was up and quality was down. We were very impressed with this great bakery. Everyone was super friendly. We came back multiple days while we were on Lopez. Watch out, she is closed on Tuesdays so keep that in mind! We were highly disappointed Tuesday morning when we showed up! Our gang tried cookies (chocolate chip, almond white chocolate), the almond butterhorns, fruit pastries -- and the GREAT pizza for lunch. The pizza has a great thick crust. It goes quickly. They bake in the morning, so they don't bake in the afternoon. So if they're out -- they're out for the day. They also sell day old products for a cheaper price. Mediocre quality baked goods seemed more from the box than scratch (and ink work / piercings on wait Staff looked very pedestrian quality.) Maybe trying for some sorta hipster - Trump-esque 'Make America Great Again' thing ... just not working. Not worth the wait, even if there is no wait, head next door to coffee shop or Lopez Village Market (bakery inside). We stopped here for the first time on Monday early afternoon. The folks working here were nice enough but I found the food not so great. We had the ham & cheese scones, they were good but dry. We also ordered two coconut haystack cookies and they were dry and had very little flavor. We also tried the brownies and they were REALLY dry, no nuts and just tasted like something you would get from a grocery store. We didnt finish the cookies or the brownies. read more
