You come here to see it, to photograph it, to stand in front of it and understand why it's been standing for decades. Late afternoon light works. Early morning light works. You would think that a beach is a beach, but South Florida beaches vary greatly. Some have buildings, some have big crowds, some are great for families, and some have a very natural setting with no buildings at all. One beach that has smaller crowds is Crandon Park's North Beach. Crandon Park Beach has two sections, North & South Beach. Crandon's two beaches are among the most popular beaches in South Florida and cover two miles along the Atlantic side of Key Biscayne The south and north ends of Key Biscayne each contain a large park. Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park makes up the southern portion of the island and contains the Cape Florida Lighthouse. The lighthouse, built in 1825, is Miami Dade County's oldest structure. The northern part of the island contains a golf course, marina, tennis center, Nature Center, the Bear Cut Preserve, and Crandon Park Beach. Crandon Park Beach is much more a local's beach and much less touristy. The waves are stronger at North Beach, and you'll see kiteboarders flocking to this beach, though you can't bring your own boards.

Today the Collins Waterfront Architectural Historic District includes 110 buildings and structures near Collins Avenue. The earliest dates to 1922 and the majority were built in the late 1940's, 1950's and 1960's. Architectural styles include moderne, Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival architecture, and the local Miami Modern style called MiMo, a type of mid century modernism architecture style that developed after WWII from the 1940's to the 1960's. Its hallmark is modern simplicity of form influenced by South Florida. Many of the buildings in this district are large resort hotels. The district is defined by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and 24th Street, Indian Creek Drive, Pine Tree Drive, and the Collins Canal. One of my favorite things about Miami Beach is the Miami Beach Boardwalk, a paved pathway that runs for seven miles, the length of Miami Beach. It begins at 87th terrace and Collins Ave at the border of Surfside and takes you south through North Beach, Mid Beach, and ending at the Ocean Drive Promenade in South Beach in South Pointe Park. Along the boardwalk are parks, hotels, condos, and restaurants. On one side you have a stunning view of the Atlantic Ocean and on the other, a front row seat to the hustle and bustle of Miami Beach. For the convenience of those traveling the boardwalk there are benches and water stations. You also often see people setting up tents and selling things like jewelry. While the historic buildings and boardwalk are important draws for the area, the crown jewel of Miami Beach is the beach itself. Wide white sand beaches meet the clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean beckoning sun worshippers, waders, and swimmers. There are many beach front parks offering amenities like lifeguards, restrooms, and volleyball courts, fitness equipment showers, and playgrounds. Pay parking is available in area lots and along the street via kiosks and apps.

The location is fixed, adjacent to the 80th St lifeguard station. I loved the vibes and magnetism of the crowd. Everybody here comes with one mission, dancing and having fun. One thing I noticed, apparently you can bring your own drum (s) or another musical instrument and join the group. It's really fun. I can't wait to return.

Bay Harbor Islands is a charming 383 acre island town in Biscayne Bay. It is made up of two…read moreislands, originally known as Broadview and Bay Harbor for the streets that run around the perimeter of each island. Today they are known as the West and East Islands. Fun fact, a condo in Bay Harbor Islands was used for the exterior of Dexter Morgan's apartment in the Showtime's TV show Dexter. The Bay Harbor Islands Tot Lot is off of Broadview Dr. on West Island. It was dedicated in the memory of Vice Mayor Louis Haas MD. The tot lot may be small in size but it has great amenities. There is a shade covered tree house themed playground and a second blue and red playground. There is also a splash pad, benches, and covered picnic pavilion with picnic tables. My favorite part of the park was the view of Biscayne Bay and the Broad Causeway which takes you on and off the island. There is no parking area but I found a spot in front of a house next to the tot lot that was being built. There is also no restrooms. This park is primarily used by neighborhood residents but if you want a great water view, stop by.

The town has unique shops and restaurants, family-friendly parks, special events, and great access to the beach. The Surfside Walking Path runs from 87th Terrace to 96th Street parallel to the beach. There is a bike path alongside it. The walking and bike path are some of the best places to take in the fresh sea air and enjoy the views in Surfside. Along the way you will enjoy stunning views of the ocean as you pass by architectural gems like the Four Seasons Surf Club completed by Pritzker Prize winning architect, Richard Meier, the Arquitectonica designed Fendi Chateau, and ARTE designed by Italian architects Antonio Citterio and Patricia Viel. At the beach entrance at 95th Street you can find Ké, the Mother Turtle art sculpture which is the mascot for the town. On the day I visited people of all ages were strolling, jogging, biking, and walking their dogs, The Surfside Walking Path is a great way to inspire and enjoy healthy movement in people who may otherwise shy away from a gym.

It is beautiful and runs from Bal Harbour to Surfside. Its roughly a mile long from 88th to 96th Street. Take a stroll from 88th Street through Bal Harbour up to Haulover Inlet, and you'll be rewarded with one of Miami-Dade's best beach views at the rock jetty. I also spotted this huge sculpture.

This brings back such great memories as I used to walk here as a little girl with my grandparents and great-aunts and great-uncles collecting buckets of seashells. Today, it is nice to watch the sunrise or listen to music as the sunsets. Great place to enjoy the views in Miami Beach.
