While Dr. Subramanyam is skilled at his specialty, I found his ability to communicate to be lacking. The receptionist was unfriendly enough to others waiting that I decided not to ask her the questions I had. I didn't leave with any kind of diagnosis or advice other than not to take too much ibuprofen. The office did not forward the results to the referring doctor, causing a delay in follow-up care, and billed several times after I'd paid. On a less-troubling but still pretty troubling note: the exam room itself definitely does not give off an air of medical-grade cleanliness and is problematic in other ways. The ultrasound wand sits visibly in a kitchen Tupperware filled with yellow goo, and everything from the walls to the ceiling has a feel of decay to it. The door handle is broken, covered with dirty old plastic tape and rubber bands in addition to a well-worn sign on notebook paper taped above the door requesting that nobody lock it (even though you can't, due to the layers of rubber bands and tape). Get a new door and toss on a fresh coat of paint--you can write it off and it will inspire more faith in your patients, as that door opens straight into the waiting room. read more

Great doctor along with a sweet and helpful receptionist (Yuliana). Easy to schedule with on the phone, flexible when I showed up late, checked everything quickly yet thoroughly, and told me he'd forward my results to my doctor. His bedside manner is very stern and a tad cold - when he was super silent, I got nervous and started asking questions, and he basically told me to stop, and that he'll tell me what he wanted me to know - but he's just being efficient and getting the job done. If you want sweet bedside manner, he's not the doctor for you. If you need a quick and simple sonogram done, he's an expert who provides clear results. read more

My entire experience with Dr. Subramanyam's office was great. I wish he could do all my prenatal sonograms. My OBGYN sent me to him to have an early sonogram because they couldn't find baby's heartbeat. He very quickly found the heartbeat and showed me all the details of the embryo. He spent a good deal of time making sure everything looked perfect and was able to reassure us, while joking with my husband, that everything was perfect. Made an appointment 2 weeks ago for 8:30am. I arrive at the same time another woman does and she is seen before me. The secretary knows that I was upset and kept coming out to stay "10 minutes", "oh she just finished and we will be ready for you in 2 minutes". 10 minutes later I was seen - at 9am/30 minutes after my scheduled appointment. I was pissed esp since I WORK!!!! She knew that she was wrong for taking someone ahead of me which is why she kept coming out with time updates - that were inaccurate! The examination room needs to be updated. The secretary/nurse asked me to remove a few garments and lay on the table, which was not fully covered - there was a paper cloth like gauze for my bare ass but the remainder of the table was uncovered. There were also 2 pillows taped together that were dated and had a pink paper like cloth for me to rest my head on . The doctor came in and was very pleasant. He walked me through the procedure and talked to me throughout it. I'm all about service. While the doctor was nice the overall experience was not good and I will not return for check ups. read more

The Doctor was great. He desperately needs a different secretary. When I first arrived the receptionist/ secretary was so rude and abrasive, causing a patient in the waiting room to cry and go int hysterics over paperwork. She could have handled the situation very differently and avoided the confrontation. Then I received a bill for the same procedure AFTER I PAID IT several times. I had to call back twice with the check number that they cashed 6 months earlier. Making me believe that the receptionist is very bad with paperwork and organization, which is very dangerous considering that is her only job. Went to this doctor for a "do-over" of a sonogram on my legs at the recommendation of my primary care med. The first place I went to said my legs were hard to read, and were unable to finish the test. Dr S was quick and thorough and did a clear reading with no problems. He is not warm but he is very professional and treated me with respect. His receptionist was also extremely nice and accommodating. I was sent to Dr. Subramanyam for a sonogram to see if he could see my baby and to rule out an ectopic pregnancy, as it was very early in my pregnancy. I was pretty scared to be there to begin with. The dr has no bedside manner. He was all business. He was not friendly and did nothing to make me feel comfortable or at ease. I needed a vaginal sonogram and he handed me the probe and told me to insert it myself. I literally said "Are you kidding me?! You want me to put it in?! You're the doctor! Not me!" He did the sonogram and saw nothing on the screen. He very matter of factly told me it's probably a miscarriage. He then said "At your age," basically saying that I'm old and dried up. I'm 39. That is not old. Plenty of women have babies well into their 40's. He did not say any of that. He just told me I'm old and it's probably a miscarriage. I burst into tears right there. He then said, again, very matter-of-factly, "Tell me why you're upset." I told him exactly why I was so upset. He also did not give me clear answers to my questions and when I asked him to clarify, he repeated the same words he has just used that I had just told him I didn't understand. I went back to my gyn and told her I will not go back to him. When she said he's really an expert in his field, I said that's all well and good, but I will never go back to him, and I asked her to send me to any other dr, which she did. Btw, he was also wrong! 5 months later, and my baby has a strong healthy heartbeat and is developing beautifully, thank God. I'm due in May. read more

I saw Dr. Subramanyam for a sonogram more than a year and a half ago. I just received a bill from a collections agency for less than $100. I called the office, saying I had NEVER received a bill in the first place, had no idea there was a copay due, and why hadn't they contacted me. They confirmed they had the correct address, however the receptionist was rude, she eventually hung up on me when I asked to speak to their medical biller (and I was very calm and nice). Skip this practice completely if you don't want your credit possibly compromised. read more

I was referred to Dr. Bala by my OB-GYN. What I liked about Dr. Bala is that he was professional, direct, and didn't waste my time. Also, prior to arriving, I was generally nervous about the appointment. However, I felt very comfortable as soon as Dr. Bala walked into the room. He has a very professional presence and I immediately felt that I was in good hands. Needless to say, my entire experience with his office was seamless and his receptionist gave me clear instructions throughout the process which I appreciated. If only there were zero star option.... I agree with all the other negative reviews on here. First, the receptionist was terrible. She literally pulled me out of the bathroom when I was walking in, so that she could let in another patient first. Whatever. The doctor was worse. Perhaps he is a fine practitioner -- I was referred to him by my GYN, so presumably he is -- but he was incredibly condescending. I was in extreme pain. He barely answered my questions, and when he did, he applied rhetorical devices commonly reserved for a troublesome forth grader! I am surprised by Dr. Subramanyam's low rating. He helped to both diagnose and monitor my uterine fibroids over a period of several years. He was able to both conduct the appropriate diagnostic activities and then explain everything to me and answer questions. My OB/Gyn office highly recommended him and I can understand why. read more

I've been to see Dr. Subramanyam twice, now, in this month. He's a great doctor. Professional, explain everything clearly, precise, and very focused when he's working. I can tell by the way he speaks to me and the way he holds himself. I can see why my OB recommended him. His receptionists (two i've met), have both been professional, kind, gentle and accommodating. my first visit i was 30 min early, she let me have an earlier appt, my 2nd appt, i was 15 minutes late! I called and she was also very understanding and didn't give me any lip or anything. I trust this office. I've read other reviews but I believe my own experience. It's not a "luxurious" place. But neither is a Radiology appt. I got done what needed to get done in a fast, professional manner, what else can you ask for? read more

When I finally said to her, 'So, your'e saying that you don't know if you take my insurance and you're unwilling to find out.' she became very rude, said, 'Fine, I'll call them'. and hung up on me. Tried to make an appointment here, the receptionist was having phone problems and decided it wasn't worth it to book something when the line sounded so bad. I told her I would hang up and call back, which I did from another phone line. Since it was HER phone that was broken, there was the same problem. I feel like it would be morally irresponsible of me if i didn't write this review. I went to Bala with referral from my obgyn. There were immediate red flags. I called to make an appointment and the receptionist said there was nothing available for 2 weeks. Since i was in some pain i asked if there was anything sooner, she said no. I said id call back. Out of desperation i did and suddenly they had open availability. The same receptionist...heavy accent so i knew...asked me, when do you want to come? Whatttt.... My appointment was days later...suddenly. When i got there there were red flags after red flags. The same receptionist told me to go to the restroom to empty my bladder. I've had this ultrasound 2 weeks prior at Beth Israel, who i prefer (this was a second opinion visit) and there i had to fill up my bladder. So i was immediately confused but made my way to the creepy rest room, which far from the actual doctors office. When i got back the receptionist escorted me to the examination room, said undress waist down and lay there and cover up. What? No gown? Ok...red flag. I look at the examination bed and theres nothing covering it. There was a leather pillow that i believe was taped to the bed. And a training pad...the kind you train a dog with big enough to lay your behind on. There was a thin paperlike blanket to "cover up". Red flag, red flag red flag. Dr. Bala came in, receptionist never left! She was also the assistant? Were there no other patients in this place? Dr. Bala was ok..kind of cold, straight to the point. Often interrupted me when i was trying to answer his questions. The exam was agressive. He was pressing down hard on my pelvic area...i went for pelvic pain. Im pretty sure im going to wake up with bruises in the morning. It was crazy intense. Again, ive had this exam before...never happened like this. He was asking me to move my ovary...what? He was pretty dismissive in the end and then walked out. I was left there on the barely covered bed and i asked, is that it? Yep, nothing was given to clean oneself. All done. Just don't go. I was surprised by the negative reviews. I had no problem though I was told and I did read that maybe there were some bedside manner issues. I disagree. My feeling is this - if people are professional and courteous, I don't expect lifelong friendships. The receptionist and I got along just fine. The Dr. came into the room, introduced himself, and talked me through the entire sonogram procedure. I've been going to Dr. Subramanyam for the past twenty years . I have confidence in my gynecologist who referred me to him and confidence in his expertise. He is always very caring, and patient about answering questions and concerns. His staff has always been courteous and friendly to me. I was seen right away, but the doctor was completely unprofessional. While I was lying on the exam table being examined, I was obviously curious about everything he was seeing/doing. In response to my curiosity, the doctor told me to stop asking so many questions. This is an incredible unprofessional statement to say to your patient, especially because I wasn't asking that many questions. I am a physician and have sent patients to Dr. Subramayan for 25 years, I have sent my family to him and I have seen him myself. He is one of the best sonographers in the tristate area. If I had to make a difficult decision, and I did, based on his readings, I would not hesitate. If he charged three times the going rate, he would be worth it. read more

I'm very surprised at the low ratings that people are giving. I have to admit, at first these reviews had persuaded me into NOT going to Dr Subramanyam. However, after receiving vague, inconsistent results from West Side Radiology on my pelvic sonogram, I needed to go get a second opinion from another radiologist. I eventually made an appointment with him after two different doctors assured me that he was one of the best out there. I was expecting the worst when I got there, but was pleasantly surprised at how friendly he was. Yes, he's not a "warm and fuzzy" type of guy, and speaks in a low voice, but I found that to be very calming for me. I can only compare my experience with him to West Side Radiology because that's the only other place I've been to, but they were two completely different experiences. He guided me along every step of the way and explained to me what he was looking at while also showing me on the screen. He thoroughly answered all of my questions, and I left the office very satisfied. In regards to the review about them collecting fees up front, I've never been to a doctor's office where they haven't collected any fees up front. You should really check with your insurance carrier on how many allowances you have per year for waived fees. As for me, my sonogram was free under my insurance plan so they did not make me pay anything. read more

I really love Dr. Bala. I've been to see him twice (Referred by my gyn). The receptionist was very sweet to me and since I had the second appointment of the morning I didn't have to wait. I actually prefer his way of giving an ultrasound to others--you keep your top on and there is a sheet to cover your bottom half (I don't know why everyone with negative reviews thinks you need a robe.) There were also no foot stirrups which made me much more comfortable than I feel at a regular exam. I thought the puppy pad that you lay on was hilarious and very practical! I didn't mind it all at. Dr. Bala is very mild mannered and answered all my questions about what I was seeing on the screen. Overall it was quick and painless. read more

His usual secretary was away, and very unfortunately I was referred urgently by my OB-GYN, and the person I talked to refused to give me an appointment for two days. So I ended up spending one night in the ER. When I finally got to see him, he was the one and first who saw what the issue was. Sometimes the lowest ranking person can create a havoc. I agree completely with Francisca K. below. My internist wanted me to get an ultrasound test done on my leg to rule out a certain condition. Dr. Bala had examined me for gallstones about 7 years ago, and so I requested a referral to him even though he doesn't take my insurance and I'll be reimbursed less on an out-of-network basis. Rather than focus on things like waiting rooms (which is fine) and how loudly he speaks, isn't the most important thing the quality of the test? Dr. Bala is obviously an expert and explains all questions carefully while showing you the results on the screen. Also, his receptionist/billing assistant is very friendly and efficient and I left the office with all the information I need to submit the claim.
