I came here in 2017, and the reason I'm writing the review now is because Tim Merrick caused me so much pain that I'm still dealing with it today. I was the passenger in a car accident where I suffered only some minor whiplash that hurt my neck and shoulder. For 2 years, the pain was a sore, nagging pain that would feel better with massages. My family suggested I go to a chiropractor. I went to one who was respectful and seemed to help, but then he moved and retired to Florida. I found Tim since he was local and his reviews seemed good. The first thing I noticed was that he couldn't seem to focus. When I was describing the accident and the pain, his eyes would dart from place to place, like he was thinking about something else. I should have left then. Later, I learned from him talking nonstop that he was a life coach, among other titles, and that he seemed more interested in becoming a life coach than a chiropractor, especially when he learned that I had some stress from work - I mean, who doesn't? After he adjusted my back, which went fine, he asked to adjust my neck. I said no thanks, I thought the back adjustment was enough. He kept saying "trust me, you will feel better." I still said no, so he convinced me to lie down so he could feel for tight spots. So I trusted him on that and while he was pressing on my neck and telling me to relax, all of sudden he twisted my neck and cracked one side. I freaked out. He said he'd have to adjust the other side or my neck "wouldn't be aligned" so I reluctantly let him finish 2 more cracks. Worse few moments of my life, even worse than the accident. He made my neck pain significantly worse to the point where I now have sharp pains. I had to spend extra to get multiple scans and a neck brace. This pain started less than 48 hours after his "neck adjustment." For 2 years, I was only dealing with sore pains and then suddenly, it felt like someone was stabbing me every time I tried to turn my neck. Honestly, this never went away. My doctor is an orthopedic surgeon and told me never to get neck adjustments again. They are not for everyone. Anyways, I'm still getting emails from this place nonstop and there's no place to unsubscribe. It looks like someone else might be running the place. Side note, I love dogs and I have 2 dogs myself, but I find it offputting when there is a little dog running around the place, especially in a medical setting where patients might be allergic. read more

I decided to give the Groupon deal a try after seeing some decent reviews on Yelp. I went in not expecting much and I was pleasantly surprised. The office is nice and clean. I love the colors on the walls! The staff is also very nice and professional. So here's how it went down: I came in early so I had to wait until my appointment time. Then I noticed that I could get a free brainwave entertainment session for checking into yelp. I told the employee behind the counter and he didn't seem to know that they were doing that deal. Despite that, he set me up on the session. I didn't even know what a brainwave entertainment session was but I wasn't going to turn down anything that is free. I gave it a try and my word to describe it is 'interesting.' I could see how it can work for certain types of people but it didn't really work for me. It was a good experience though. Afterwards, it was time for my alignment. I was seen my the new doctor (sorry I forgot her name) sharply at the appointed time. It was my first alignment and I must say that it was a weird yet good experience. The doctor is nice and very down to earth. First she examined my posture from where I was standing. Then I stepped onto two scales to see my weight distribution between the two hemispheres of my body. Finally she did my adjustment. She did say the effect of the adjustment was temporary and that I needed to come back in order to slowly establish a pattern of posture similarly to a person that must go to a gym more than once in order to be in shape. I can't look past the fact that they were indeed trying to get me to come back regularly but I can't blame them. I know one of the reasons for the Groupon is to get new patients. After my alignment I had my massage. I also can't remember the name of the masseur but he was excellent. He was insightful, genuine and professional. Overall, I give my experience 5 stars! read more

I came with the Groupon deal. The staff and chiropractor are nice. The staff asked me to fill out a form on an iPad since it's my first time here. The form took some time since it's kinda long. The chiropractor told me that my spine was rotated because I use my brain too much. He could help me with that but he doesn't know if I would feel better or worse after adjustment. I came here because I got a really good deal on Groupon and I was not disappointed. The doctor (adjuster, whose name I forgot), cracked me everywhere crackable. That session lasted about 20 minutes before the masseur did his thing. The masseur is skilled plus he's good to the eyes :D. He uses the Swedish deep tissue massage which helps with muscle stiffness. Overall, they were professional and punctual. I would recommend to anyone who's curious or otherwise. read more

I saw Dr. Denis Martino and she is very passionate about chiropractic and knowledgeable about it for sure. She gave me a brief introduction and cracked my spine and I felt awesome afterwards! I wish I could give this place 10 stars! I booked this appointment with a groupon deal a few weeks ago. I admit, I was half-expecting subpar service since I was getting discounted treatment but not...at..all! I was having some trouble booking online, so I called and spoke with Maria who was very kind and helpful. She helped me book my appointment and answered all my questions. When I arrived for my appointment, Maria greeted me with a smile and even chatted with me while I filled out the e-forms. The wait was not even 5 minutes before Dr. Merrick called me in. He was very sweet and had an excellent bedside manner. He conducted the exam while explaining everything he was doing and how my body was responding.He was gentle and thorough and I felt so much lighter on my feet when he was done. I even felt like I was walking taller than I was before :) But wait....THERE'S MORE! Theeennn, I was called in by Jay the masssage therapist for a full hour medical massage. He introduced himself, I was asked about my allergies and my pressure preferences, and then I changed for the massage table...Words.. cannot.. describe how incredible an experience that massage was. I get massages pretty often and have been getting them for years, but never have I had a massage quite as fantastic as this one. I've never been more happy to tip a masseuse in my life. I scheduled a follow up and of course another massage and as I left the building, I can honestly say I felt like a million bucks. I'm not sure what the 2 other reviewers are talking about. Making an appointment online was a snap - I dealt with two different receptionists when I emailed with questions and both were friendly and helpful. While it is true I didn't receive a confirmation of my appointment - I figured this was because there were overwhelmed with Living Social people so I emailed to confirm and I received a prompt reply and apology. Dr. Merrick has an awesome bedside manor (and a tiny adorable rescue puppy!) and thanks to him I now feel like I understand what all my back pain ish is all about and I have hope for a future without back pain. I used my deal this morning and already made my next appointment! I'm so happy that I found this place, and that it is so close to my office. Dr. Tim is awesome, down to earth, so welcoming and understanding. He really takes the time to listen to what you want, and need, and he does all that he can for you to reach your healing goals. Dr. Tim and his staff create an environment that allows you to accept their healing energies. I find that weekly adjustments and massages really help me to heal from not only rigorous physical activity, but also from daily stressors. My massage therapist (I cannot recall his name) was INCREDIBLE - very likely the best deep tissue/sports massage that I have ever received. Well it's been a while since I've visited Dr. Tim. Well, let me tell you, this guy is absolutely positively awesome. I used a Living Social deal for this and got an adjustment, a massage, a book recommendation, and a new outlook on life. He's very soft spoken and asks all the right questions. I would definitely be a regular customer of his, if I didn't live in Queens. I love the color palette of this place, well painted walls, and exceptionally clean. He runs a tight ship it seems. To all the other Yelpers who purchased Living Social deals, you have to be mindful that his office ends up selling over 1,200+ vouchers in some cases, at the rate of 30 mins per appointment, that's over 600 hours of booked time. If he works a 40 hour workweek M-F that's over 15 straight days of appointments. He's a very busy bee if I say so myself. Cut the guy a little slack really. read more

I have seen several chiropractors, some great, some awful, and I have to say Dr. Merrick ranks with the great ones. The office has a calming energy about it. I walked in, and it felt like all the stress I was carrying from the street went away. The decor is very easy on the eyes. The woman at the front desk was kind and helpful. I was a few minutes late, but they didn't give me any grief for it. For me, one of the most telling signs about a chiropractor is their manner during the consultation. I have had doctors who were pushy, or who didn't seem to really listen, or who tried to show off their knowledge by over-explaining things and/or talking down to me... Dr. Merrick didn't display any of these traits. He was incredibly nice, not pushy, very knowledgeable, but without any air of ego. He is down to earth, but still very professional. Then on to the adjustment table. He spent a bit of time evaluating what needed to be corrected, then he made all of the adjustments. He was pretty thorough. He also explained to me some of the ways my tense neck muscles were affecting my posture and whatnot. Granted I was new to the Chiropractic experience but I have since seen a handful of other Chiropractors and it has only made this practice seem that much worse. Thank god I found another chiropractor elsewhere in Manhattan who focused more on stretching exercises and things I could do to feel better without needing to visit an office 3 times a week, as Dr. Merrick suggested would be the only ideal plan of action "in my case". [Both future Chiropractors I visited informed me that my back problems were extremely minor and I would benefit more from stretching and working on my posture then I would getting an alignment multiple times a week.] Dr. Merrick would spend about 3 minutes making an adjustment [and 5 minutes explaining what was wrong with my back and how he could fix it with a few more appointments a week] collect my co-pay, then try to sell me some of the other services in their office (acupuncture, massages, cupping, ect) [CORRECTION: He would allow the eastern medicine therapist they shared an office and a waiting room with to pitch me on her 'insurance covered' message, acupuncture, cupping services] http://www.yelp.com/biz/chiens-acupuncture-and-wellness-center-new-york-2 Judging from some of the other reviews on here he seems to do the trick for some people, so dont let my review stop you from giving him a chance. I thought it was such a great office. I had no issues with appointments, and I used my living social voucher for this. I ended up staying with them because they know their stuff. They take time to explain everything to you, have nice facilities, the front desk is super helpful and polite and Dr. T is a great guy. This was my first chiropractor appointment and I have to say, I think they're onto something! I'm not sure how to explain it, but after getting a few adjustments (including some scary-feeling, but ultimately relieving cracks of the neck) I feel great already! The chiropractor is extremely friendly and helpful. The massage therapist was great as well. I mentioned to her that I had a few knots on my right shoulder blade, so she made a point to focus on that part. It hurt like hell, but she definitely got the knots out! I, also with many yelpers, came to this place via LivingSocial. While I did have some issues scheduling in the beginning, I really can't complain because I can only imagine the enormous amount of traffic created by this deal - I mean, it's a pretty sweet deal! Crazy horrible. First, Dr Tim, who was great, is retired & no longer with this business. Alive & Well is now run by Dr Gerry , who is totally incompetent, gives mediocre chiropractic adjustments that are the same every week, and tries to sell you on more visits. After signing on for a package in good faith, I decided not to continue due to the subpar adjustments and constant sales pitch trying to get me in more frequently, in addition my mother had passed away & I had to deal with settling her estate in Pennsylvania. Dr Gerry flipped out and screamed at me for not wanting to continue, yelling do I know his rent is $12,000!?! Then he compared what I paid to the patient just before me. Never have I experienced this kind of crazy unprofessionalism, to say the least. Not even any expression of condolence for what I, the patient, was going through, much less chiropractic care. I originally came across Alive & Well through a Living Social coupon. I actually found the online scheduling to be quite simple. Yes, I did have to schedule about a month in advance to get an appointment, but that is not at all uncommon when purchasing a Living Social coupon for a service provided in New York City. If concerned with being able to use the deal quickly, I would suggest giving them a call before buying. Unlike some of the posts here suggest, the staff at Alive & Well are some of the most caring and compassionate people that I have met and I am certain that they would be glad to let you know how far out they are booked for the coupons. I would also suggest contacting Living Social directly for refunds, not the business itself, if you were unable to use a coupon. Another thing to consider is that the massage therapist is actually a separate business housed together with the chiropractic side under one roof. A long wait time to book a massage is not a reflection of the chiropractic services offered at Alive & Well. But on to the important stuff, the truly remarkable care that I received at Alive & Well. Having had no prior chiropractic experience, I was tempted into buying the Living Social deal because of the massage. The massage was great, but what struck me about my experience was Dr. Tim and the chiropractic consultation. His mindful demeanor along with his knowledge of the mind-body connection convinced me to come back for a second visit. The improvement in my overall health and attitude, along with the welcoming environment provided by Dr. Tim, Dr. Ryan, the staff, (and Gracie the sweetest rescue dog) was what kept me coming back. I was a patient of Dr. Tim's for two months before unfortunately moving from NYC recently. My only regret is that I had not found them earlier in my time there! Alive & Well is a relaxing getaway from the hustle and bustle of daily city life. They focus on healing the body as a whole and emphasize the importance of chiropractic to reduce the stresses of everyday life. I originally came here just to try chiropractic care, but I now have become a regular patient of Dr. Tim for over 2 years. Going to get regular adjustments has changed my life and the way my body feels. When I first began going, I had just finished physical therapy for a pinched nerve and I was still feeling some ill effects of the injury. After the first appointment, I immediately started seeing results. The pain was beginning to go away, my posture got better, and I just felt more healthy overall. After several months, the pain from my pinched nerve was minimal. Dr. Tim has also recommended and demonstrated a few things to help me stay pain-free, like breathing exercises and stretches. Between these exercises and the regular adjustments, I'm feeling better than ever! The receptionists are very nice and its very easy to make an appointment as long as you make it a few days in advance. This was my first chiropractic adjustment and probably my fifth or sixth massage. Dr. D seems like an extremely smart woman who knows her stuff. She did some quick adjusting and explained the compelling reasons to have routine chiropractic care. My massage therapist, Yo (her company is called "Yossage"), was simply fantastic. She was thorough and very knowledgeable. An additional perk for me was that she played some really nice, relaxing jazz music (but made sure to ask if it suited me before she started the massage). I appreciate their online appointment setup capability, along with email reminders. I hadn't expected quite a nice ambience--had expected a more medical environment but it was more spa-like, which I appreciated. I hope to return again soon! read more

Dr. Tim has a Midas Touch. He is incredibly gifted at what he does. My body starts to relax the moment he puts his hands on my back. Folks, if you notice, the 1-star reviews are from people who purchased a Groupon-type deal and then couldn't get in to see him because he was overbooked. Dr. Tim is a gifted chiropractor. I've had several good chiropractors in my life and he's far and away the best. Sensitive and gentle, but firm and gets good results. When you're in his hands you feel very well taken care of, and your body can let go more easily to the adjustments. His staff is also very accommodating and friendly. There is also another treasure in this clinic, who is the massage therapist, John. I had been going to Dr. Tim for several years but just recently discovered John, who, I can honestly say is the best massage therapist I've had. John puts a lot of work in and explained everything he was doing--after asking if I wanted to know. I ended up getting an excellent lesson in massage therapy. If you have shoulder and/or back pain, this guy really knows how to get it out. He spends a long time warming up the area first, so the muscles can relax more easily when the massage starts. I had a living social coupon for a one hour massage and called 3 weeks before the deadline. I was informed that there were NO appointments for the next 3 weeks and they would not issue me a refund. Nor would they let me book now for a later appointment. They would, only, give me $30 off a full priced, $100 massage. (They are currently selling more coupons on Living Social, even though they can't meet the demand for the coupons they've already sold.) When I complained, she said I could speak to the owner but then the man (Paul) who answered my call just hung up on me. When I have a treat, I often like to have something to look forward to. That is why I "waited until the last minute" (3 weeks beforehand). I don't even understand his response, which ignores the rudeness and difficulty of working with them. read more

Purchased a LivingSocial deal for a one hour massage but didn't even get to use it. I had an appointment that I needed to cancel so tried calling several times the day before but kept getting a busy signal, no recording. Same thing on the day of my appointment. Busy. Finally, after being on hold for over 20 minutes the day after got through and the receptionst told me my voucher was no longer valid since I didn't show. They never even called me to remind me of the appointment otherwise I would have been able to tell them I needed to cancel. She insisted I would have got a recording if I would called called, lie, it goes right to busy signal. Very poor customer service. I had brought a deal from groupon to come here. When I went to make an appointment every appointment was booked that I had to wait two months just to get an appointment. MISTAKE #1. Why should I have to wait so long just to receive an appointment!!!!! Today was the day that I had my appointment however someone in my family passed away to so I'm unable to make it. I called and tried to reschedule and they told me no because I had to do it in 24hrs in advance. If I knew I was going to lose somebody yesterday then I would of cancel the appointment. I tried to explain to the person on the phone that I had a lost in my family and he was very rude and dismissive. I would never do business or refer anyone to this place. I came here July 201e on a groupon (yes I'm super late) my experience was the absolute best. I walked in with trouble sittting upstraigh and walked out feeling very well put together. I wasn't slouching for days it sucked that my insurance at the time did not cover treatments but I'm hoping to go back in the near future. The masssage was the absolute best and I was made to feel comfortable since the whole experience was my first time. Although many of the reviews sound amazing, companies should not promise services at a discounted rate if they may be unable to provide the service. This business had a deal advertised on Living Social and is now unable to take any bookings for the next month that have to do with that deal. Instead of issuing a refund, they said they would only take $30 off another regular priced service that they offered. The point of buying the deal was to have a discounted service and if they can't provide it, I think they should coordinate a refund or extension of the deadline with Living Social. Highly disappointed that there was no attempt to work something out so that people who purchased this deal could still receive what they paid for and possibly become great customers. I have been to quite a few chiropractors and massage therapists over the years. Dr. Merrick was very knowledgeable and personable. He really took time to listen to my health history in detail, and answered my questions. The adjustment was great, very unique compared to what they do at other chiropractic offices. He thinks about chiropractic from a neurological standpoint, not just an orthopedic standpoint. I really liked the two scales, where you stand with one foot on each scale to see if your weight is evenly balanced. Having the temperature taken on my right hand vs. my left hand was also enlightening. Brainwave entrainment was interesting, somewhat relaxing, but also odd. I got Eric Dahl LMT for the massage. Eric had slurred speech and continually moved his entire body when he spoke, which was extremely distracting and disturbing. The full body massage wasn't bad, though. I would've preferred not to have the scented lotion, but forgot to ask that it not be used until it was too late, so I can't complain about that. The sheets had also been washed with very perfumy detergent that I found unpleasant. There is a sign at the desk asking you to tip after your massage, then the massage therapist asks you to leave a tip, then on your way out, whoever is at the desk at the time asks you again to leave a tip. It's overkill! Alive & Well's prices for chiropractic adjustments are comparable to others in Manhattan. They give you a price sheet and let you decide for yourself; there is no high pressure sales pitch. The office is decorated to look like a spa, not a medical office. If you are complaining that you can't get an appointment for a couple of months, you've never bought a healthcare Groupon or Living Social in NYC!!! A doctor's office is not like a restaurant. 1-3 month wait times are very, very common at medical offices overwhelmed by voucher buyers. I had to wait just a few days for an appointment at Alive & Well, whereas I've waited much longer at other doctor's offices where I was paying full price. Just because a business can't fit you in to their schedule tomorrow does NOT mean they are a scam. read more

They are not just booked up 3 months on the weekends; they are booked up 3 months period, but they were very quick to offer the face value (which is to say NOTHING, the price I paid, NOT the value of the coupon) towards an exam I told them I would wait for the massage, I just wanted to see the doctor and they wouldn't unbundle. It's clear this is a Living Social scam. DEMAND YOUR MONEY BACK FROM LIVING SOCIAL. And don't ever go to a business this slimy. I signed up for this deal specifically because I needed t see a chiropractor and called to schedule with in a week of getting the deal. Many people do wait until the end of a deal to schedule so all this proves is that even from the beginning they had no intention of honoring their deal. And, Tim, whether I called the office a minute after the deal hit or a minute before it expired, you took my money in agreement to provide a service so don't you dare talk about personal responsibility. I purchased a Living Social voucher for Alive and Well Chiropractic Center about a month ago. When I called last week, I was put on hold for a very long time (about 10 minutes), so I hung up and called back. Then, I was put on hold again. Finally, someone was able to help me schedule an appointment. She was not very kind and seemed annoyed. We finally scheduled an appointment in May and right before hanging up, she said that I would have my adjustment at this appointment and at the end of that appointment, I could schedule my massage appointment. I communicated that I would like the adjustment and the massage in the same appointment. Again, she seemed very annoyed, which I did not understand. She told me that there were no appointments until June. Then, I said that I can do July. She exclaimed, "JULY! Oh, I am not taking appointments for JULY!". What kind of doctors office does not take appointments 2 months in advance? Especially in New York City? She expressed I would have to keep calling back to see if I can make an appointment in July. If the appointments are full, I am out of luck. No thanks. I don't want to go to a doctors office that has rude people. I got a refund from Living Social. read more

I LOVE this place. I've recommended it to anyone with pain - whether it be chronic pain or just general overworked, not taking care of yourself enough-pain. I've had migraines for 10 years - sometimes as bad as 3 times a week. For the past 5 months I've had no migraines - headaches yes but they go away with Excedrin and stretching. It's unbelievable. I bought a groupon special but couldn't use it since they were booked for 2 months. First of all if they can't handle the revenue they shouldn't sell so many groupons. So I waited and finally got an appointment since they close early I had to take off from my work. Finally when it was the day of my appointment doctor decided to leave early so they wanted me to make 2 trips to the office. Apparently they have been calling me last night to change my appointment, I might have entered one of the digits of my phone number wrong but they couldn't e-mail me. They e-mailed me twice last week to confirm my appointment and I was really looking forward to this appointment. Very unprofessional. read more

Horrible place. Got a deal from Living Social, and the only way you can book is online thru their Booking system. However there not a single day available. Call and asked whats wrong, the lady said that you will have check the online booking everyday, they add available schedules everyday. PS: The booking system online, you have to manually click the specific day to check if there is any slot. And its extremely slow...... Such a disappointment. I also called in pretend that i will pay cash, guess what, some other receptionist said, i could go there tomorrow afternoon. Well, If you got a Voucher, try your best to get your $ back, because they will not let you redeem it before end of the earth!!!! On the other hand, Living Social was been very helpful on the refund. 5 Star for Living Social, 0 for Alive $ Well Bullshit. read more
