I had to get a specific mg. amount heart medication for my fur-baby over a weekend so I could alleviate her suffering as quickly as possible. The doctor didn't tell me how difficult that would be and I believe he knew. Anyways, I was actually laughed at at CVS and another pharmacy I can't remember the name. Made me angry because I don't think that loving non-humans is stupid or invalid. She's my little sweetheart. The only person who gave me hope and treated me with respect was Richard. He got what my sweet girl needed in a day which was a week faster than Costco said they would do if they could do and they just couldn't promise... Everyone I have dealt with in person at BP is helpful, efficient and kind. If that changes the so will this review, but I don't expect it to. I'm triggered because I tend to get a lot of shade thrown from pharmacists. I get they're twitchy because of the big responsibility of it all and legal culpability and wot not, but dang. I selected Balboa Pharmacy from the pharmacies listed by my health plan, my doctor sent a prescription there, and the first time I went there at 4 pm, they were closed (they were supposed to be open until 6 pm). I went again the next day around noon, and walked in to a somewhat dark, dirty, cluttered place with no one behind the counter. I heard people talking in back, so I waited, cleared my throat, and after a couple of minutes someone yelled over that they'd be right out. I waited more, then eventually they did come out with an amazingly dismissive attitude and told me they were closed. There was no closed sign on the door (which was open). I explained that the doctor called in a prescription to them, and the man said that they were going out of business in a couple of weeks and they couldn't help me. Weird, creepy, and rude. Lock the door, change your website, and post a "closed" sign. Don't waste sick people's time with your unprofessional behavior. read more

Today was the first time I went there. I needed to get meds for my dog. My Vet did not have them in stock so I looked up this place. The medicine ended up being about $13 less that 800-petmeds and they had it in stock. They were friendly and really fast considering it was Christmas eve. I'm glad I found them. read more

Customer Service poor - reads you rules Had to rent a wheelchair due to broken leg. Sent my 22 yr old niece out to get for me on a Saturday. Brought it back, it was too narrow for me to use, needed a wider one. Called back at 2:50pm, said we could be there by 3:05pm to return. Nope, they close promptly at 3pm and they wouldn't wait. Closed Sunday Tried explaining circumstances on Monday, got same attitude if we rented it for a minute or a day it was the same. And told us to read the receipt it was our contract. read more

They have nearly everything I need as a home health/hospice RN. I usually end up running in looking for a last minute dressing or catheter item that our supplier is back ordered on, or didn't arrive on time. The staff is helpful, knows where everything is. And if they don't carry something (rare) they can help me find the people that do. Excellent service. Pricing is a little on the high end (hence the 4* review). I called ahead before coming in and they carried my product. Bonus, they were open until 6 so I had time to make it there after work. This pharmacy makes me feel uncomfortable when I have had to come in here. The pharmacist is rude and questions why doctors write various prescriptions which doesn't make sense. It is very obvious that they cater to the same clients and anyone new is an outcast. I am not surprised to see that other people have had poor experiences there. Will not give you your money back on items even if not used and have your receipt due to Covid. Other stores with the same products will give you your money back like CVS and Amazon and Rite Aid. I start to go to this pharmacy 3 years ago, people are very helpful and friendly there, they speak 4 languages, before I go to fill usually I call 20 min in advance and when I'm there my prescription is ready. I've been going here for years, when the original owner was in charge and working there as a pharmacist, they were great, personable and friendly and helpful the management has changed since the passing of the owner but they are still very good at what they do, some of the staff could be a little more friendly, but Paul the previous owners son still is from what i understand partner in ownership and still works there, he is still very helpful and friendly. read more

I've been going there for 33 plus yrs. knew the owner & his young son.I've 2 boys of my own, now are grown men as is my phamasist's son. Was always at this pharmacy for one reason or another. My boys were very active in every sport and there were many different sports injuries, plus their illnesses. I got all my medicines there, too. I had a daughter when my 2nd born was 14yrs & still going to Balboa Pharmacy for illnesses for both son, daughter & myself. My pharmasist/owner/father/friend was no longer there. His son is now owner. Nice to walk into Balboa Pharmacy with smiles,professionalism and the new employees have taken very good care of us. Always polite and concerned. NEVER HAVE I HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE AT BALBOA PHARMACY. In Nov. 2010, I moved close to downtown, San Diego. I go to Allen's Pharmacy on 6th Ave. They're a small pharmacy and they are good. Very busy but never wait more than 20 minutes if walk in, if call ahead, I'm in & out. Still go to Balboa when visiting or shopping in Clairemont or Mission Bay, P.Beach, Kearny Mesa etc. Awesome as always. Allen's will stay my pharmacy if Balboa Pharmacy closes it's doors. I went here for the first time today after my doctors appointment. Why? It was close. Right when I walked in, I was greeted nicely. I thought, okay! This should go smoothly. WRONG. This wild looking blonde lady came up to me, I specifically asked how much would my RX cost to fill, CASH PAY, I HAVE NO INSURANCE. She said okay, let me ask the people in back. I waited. And waited , and waited. Ten minutes pass. I ask again if someone knows the price. (FYI, I am the ONLY customer in the store at this time) The blonde lady tells me that they are checking. I wait more. Then, I hear the pharmacist call my doctors office, asking things like ' why am I on this dose, is this a REAL prescription, is this the right quantity ...' I was blown away. All I asked for was the PRICE. So... after two different phone calls to my doctor, the weird blonde lady(that looks like she is a Hot Topic employee) comes back to me with a hand written price of $499.16 . I laugh and say I know its expensive, but I can get it at CVS for $211.00 . I ask for my Rx paper back, and say... ' All I asked you guys for was a PRICE CHECK. You had me standing here for almost 20 minutes, you called my doctors office twice, asked a bunch of unnecessary questions... maybe next time you can treat a NEW customer a little better. ' I shook my head, laughed, and left. Moral of the story? 1 , Over priced. 2 , little to no people skills, 3 , zero communication , 4 , just plain RUDE. We've been going to Balboa Pharmacy exclusively for nine years. Their customer service far exceeds the larger corporate pharmacy chains. If there is a problem with a written perscription they usually let you know right away before leaving. The pharmacists are professional and knowledgeable. The employees are efficient and friendly and I leave feeling like they are good neighbors. I have purchased high quality medical supplies there and I love the ethnic beauty creams especially from Russia. The only criticism I have is they're not open on Saturdays anymore. read more

I am always greeted with a SMILE! The pharmacists Sue and Gary and Robert are wonderful they have always gone out of their way to help me with anything that I need, and have made sure I could have my perscriptions done and ready when I needed them filled. They have taken the time to contact my Doctor's for any problems that have come up many times. I have to agree with everyone else... the customer service here is just awful. I try to support mom and pops, so I have given this place several chances. Poor service every time. Today was the last straw, though. My dr. called in a prescription yesterday. When I walked in this afternoon, it hadn't been filled. The lady behind the counter said they'd do it now, it'd just be a few minutes. 25 minutes later, I found out that they hadn't even bothered to start working on it yet. There were at least 4 people working back there (I saw 4, but heard more voices, so there may have been more) and I was the only customer in the whole store. I am sure they are only still in business because 1. they are a compounding pharmacy, and there aren't that many compounding pharmacies around. read more

I must agree with other Yelpers that this place is terrible! Excruciatingly poor customer service. They actually try to ignore customers. Prices are waaaay marked up. Merchandise is disorganized and scattered on hooks, shelves, and the floor. Seems like the people working there are overworked and underpaid so they don't give a crap. HORRIBLE SEVICE! Balboa Pharmacy has an abundant supply of medical equipment such as slings, wraps, joint support, etc. My husband and I struggled to figure out how to put on several complicated shoulder supports. We are both physically challenged. Three employees were present and business was slow. NOT ONE of them offered assistance although I was obviously tangled up in Velcro and clips. This went on for 30 minutes. Unless you are able-bodied (in which case you wouldn't need assistive devices) don't waste your time. read more

This place is the WORST pharmacy I have ever been to. I wouldn't go back here if you paid me. I went there because my doctor recommended it. When I went in the pharmacist ran my DEA report and said that I had too many doctors prescribing to me and he wouldn't fill my script. He practically yelled this in the store with other customers around. I had recently had back surgery so my GP was prescribing before the surgery, then my surgeon prescribed after my surgery and then my surgeon sent me to pain management that wrote that prescription. He made it sound like I was doctor shopping and humiliated me in front of other customers. He didn't even ask me about the doctors, even though none of those prescriptions overlapped. I then found out later that he had called my pain management doctor and told them that he wouldn't fill my prescription. I don't know if they can legally do that but I think it is definitely bad customer service. My pain management doctor didn't do anything about it because I was correct. Please don't give these people any of your hard earned money. All they do is embarrass people that are in pain and treat them like criminals. read more

I have had a wonderful experience with this pharmacy since day one. More then two years now. The staff is very efficient in all they do and very informative when I have had questions regarding questions on my medications. I've been treated with respect and I feel very comfortable when I come into this pharmacy. Another plus is that they have a delivery service if I'm not able to pick up my medications , they can have it delivered to my home. There is nothing negative I can say about this company. Probably only still in business because they are on the ground floor of a medical building with lots of doctors' offices. I walked in after my appointment thinking, "Oh this'll be an easy place to pick up some Epsom salts." Boy was I wrong--was ignored by about five employees busily doing anything but providing service to their one customer until I finally started to walk out in disgust. At that point someone noticed and asked if they could help me so I asked about the Epsom salts. She glumly led me to the row I'd already examined and picked up a milk carton about the size they give to elementary school kids in the lunchroom. The price for this tiny container that doesn't contain enough salt for even a single bath? $2.19. I walked out, saw a Rite-Aid in the same shopping center, and was immediately directed to aisle 14 where I found a 6 lb bag of MgSO4 for $5.99. Um, yeah, that's about 12 times as much Epsom salt, or more. Don't waste your time at Balboa Pharmacy. read more
