I've waited 10 years to write this review. I think it is important to tell my story. I've had to have every filling I had at Balcones Dental redone. I have TMJ since my horrific sedation procedure and it all cost me about $5,000. I spent $5,000 as a student at Balcones to be in pain and to have to have it all redone in the last 10 years. I hate to write a bad review because they were all nice to me, but it was a terrible experience for me personally. I hope they are better able to help people now. read more

I went to Balcones Dental and was told that I would need almost $10,000 worth of work done on my teeth. (and was basically told that at least 4 of my teeth were goners unless I had the work done right away. They showed my pictures of my teeth with rot all over them. ?!?!) With my insurance, it was about $5K. Completely freaked out, I got a second opinion somewhere else. The second dentist told me my teeth were in great condition, and that all I needed was a night guard ($300). I didn't tell him he was my "second opinion" dentist. Balcones charged (I think) $500 for a night guard. Second dentist was $300. I don't recommend them. UPDATE: It is 3 years later, and none of the teeth that I was told I would lose (by Balcones Dental) have had any problems/issues. I've been to several dentists, since, and have been told by them all that my teeth are in great shape. UPDATE: 4 years later. Teeth still fine. I've seen 3 different dentists since Balcones. Was curious as to their Yelp rating so came back on to share. Another comment: When I got the $10,000 bill worth of work and I said I "freaked out" I mean that I actually spent about 1/2 an hour hyperventilating and sobbing in their parking lot because I didn't have that kind of money and my teeth were apparently going to rot away. read more

I began crown work for a front tooth w Balcones Dental in January of this year, and the finished crown wasn't ready until May. Front teeth, I came to understand during the process and meetings w dental lab technicians, are notoriously difficult to match well. That may be, but nearly 5 months to complete the job, and numerous rude, unprofessional communications from Dr. Lindsay's office staff and hygienists along the way, made for a very bad experience. I would strongly recommend against going to this office for restorative dental treatments. I had had cleanings done there, as well as cavities filled, and those treatments were ok. BD did finally place the crown on my front tooth, but it's still not a great color match. When I asked one of Dr. Lindsay's hygienists to look at it with me in the mirror, and give me her honest opinion of what she saw, she said only, "I think it's as good as it's going to get." And the office manager, while I was on my way out the door after this last visit, said, "I'm sorry you're not happy." (Instead of, "It took us a long time to complete this work, and it's still not just right. That's unusual. I'm sorry.) Which to me was a final refusal of anyone in the office to take responsibility for what was an awful experience. I'm looking for a new dentist. read more

I paid $89 for a deal that included an exam, xrays, and a whitening kit. After the exam, Balcones told me that I needed over $5,000 of work in crowns alone! I couldn't believe it; I take excellent care of my teeth and have never needed any dental care other than cleanings for over 10 years. At the end of my visit, they asked me to refer a friend to get xrays and an exam--the same thing, minus the whitening kit, that I had just paid $89 for--for free. I went to another dentist a week later and that person did not find any problems, not even cavities, with the several teeth for which Balcones recommended I get crowns. I would absolutely get a second opinion for any treatments Balcones recommends that seem unusual or excessive. read more

I have a similar story to the other low ratings--I went in for a routine teeth cleaning and at the end Dr. Cantu came in to do my checkup. He said I needed 2 crowns where I had existing fillings and multiple new fillings, all of which were estimated to cost $2800 ($1700 after insurance). I was shocked and asked him to show me the problem areas on the x-rays the and he vaguely pointed around some areas and said that these kind of problems can't be seen on x-rays but will show up when the tooth is opened up. !! This didn't sound right with me and I wasn't about to spend this kind of money without a second opinion so I went to see another dentist. He took x-rays too and said yes, one filling had a cavity below but he could just replace the filling and the second filling just needed grinding down where there was a rough spot. Total: $84. I also got a mouth guard and bleaching trays made at Balcones and these turned out fine. And the teeth cleaning was fine too. Bottom line: be very wary of the procedures they recommend and get a second opinion before you commit to any of them. read more

I found Balcones Dental through the Bridal Extravaganza, the ladies represented the practice so well. I like how they will contact my insurance provider before they do any work, unlike my last dental place. I am always made to feel comfortable and they are very flexible with scheduling, they open at 7:30 how convenient! read more

From the recommendation of KOKE FM, and in dire need of a dentist visit, I called the main office line today Friday/Non-Holiday, and the VM says they are not open today. So I call the after-hours number and the lady answering was a total BITCH to me, the way she ridiculed me for calling this number. Why is a so-called reputable dentist closed on normal business day and why must they treat prospects with so dis-respect when inquiring?? Not impressed. read more

Dr. Cantu and the staff did a very good job on a previous crown. The only problem was that it cost more than I had paid because they had estimated my insurance would pay more. This happens after every procedure. Something is wrong here. Dr. Cantu said I had a few "small" cavities that needed filling, and so I scheduled an appointment. However, when I arrived, Dr. Cantu was still busy with another patient and Dr. Lindsay did the fillings. He virtually ground out my a tooth for a "small" filling and left it rough and odd shaped. He didn't do the other "small" fillings and said I needed two expensive crowns instead. Then I got a bill for more money--the insurance estimate again. I'm looking for another dentist. read more

I had to have an implant done after having a tooth break under a crown late in 2013. Having heard all the folks at KOKE FM go to Balcones Dental I decided to give Dr. Lindsay a try. I'll be the first to say the dentist office has never been a place I enjoyed very much but Dr. Lindsay and his staff made it very pleasant. They put me at ease the very first time I went in. Everything they promised was delivered. I have a new implant that matches well and it was done with my comfort in mind. I would not hesitate for a second to recommend Balcones Dental to my friends and family! read more

So, almost a week ago Friday, I tripped and fell while running. I hit my chin and chipped 4 of my front teeth. My regular dentist was closed on the day of my accident and I found Balcones Dental while searching for 'emergency dentist'. They immediately had me come in and I saw Dr. Johnson within 30 minutes of calling them. Everyone at the front desk, the dental assistant, and Dr. Johnson were so kind and amazing. I was scared, in shock, and pain. I noticed quickly that this staff is trauma informed (meaning that they have an understanding of how dental trauma impacts the nervous system). In addition, I am self-employed and self-pay for dental work. Balcones Dental offered an affordable rate/plan. I have been following up with them to monitor my healing progress. They generously have given me a great deal of time and information about what is going on in mouth and what to except when I have my fillings done on my chipped teeth. I'm not quite sure why these guys have such poor ratings, it's really kind of sad. I have had great experiences here at Balcones Dental and still am willing to make the trip from North Dallas just to get my dental work done here. I had an emergency front took that decided to break and crumble at work- called these guys and was seen in less than 2 hours. They did a build up so I looked somewhat normal again and told me that it for sure needed a root canal and then a crown. I could not stay to get the work done that day so made an appointment to have my work done. They let me split my payments between my two services(thank God) and did my cleaning as well. I wasn't wowed by my teeth cleaning but it had been a long while since my last one- so I pitty the girl who did it :(. Long story long- I went in for a consultation here in Dallas for JUST a crown on my other front tooth and it was going to cost me 3xs what my root canal, build up, and crown did with Balcones. Needless to say, I called right away and booked my appointment with BD for two weeks later. Nothing but great things to say about the billing staff, hygienists, and Dr. Lindsey. Balcones Dental is fantastic. They tell you the real deal and let you pick what you want to do. You don't have to spend a lot to have a great smile. The office staff is efficient and friendly. I have known Dr. Lindsay now for about 6 yrs and have always had a great experience when visiting his office. I am now doing the implant process on 4 teeth and everything so far has been exactly as described. OK, maybe not fun, but Dr. Lindsay and his staff are extremely professional. I actually flying regularly from Santa Barbara, CA. to Austin to have the implant procedure done. By far my favorite dentist office that I've visited in Austin. I never wait, the staff is always refreshingly friendly and professional. They take the time to explain every procedure and answer any questions around cost. Dr. Lindsay is up-front and thorough. I've had a few cavities filled here, and my favorite thing is that they will numb the specific tooth, rather than an entire side of my face. I will freely admit that I was terrified to go to the dentist... I hadn't been in six years after a horrible experience. But, my sister was getting married and mom laid down the law- "Go get your teeth cleaned." Everyone was so kind, all the way from making the appointment to Dr. Lindsey, Jamie and the entire team. Nobody made fun of my fear or told me that my teeth were going to fall out of my head. They let me know professionally and courteously what work they recommended, simply beginning with regular cleanings. Because I knew that I would need some significant work (I was also a terrible flosser), I was amazed when I found out that my teeth are actually in pretty darn good condition! They were very helpful in figuring out how to maximize my dental benefits and care, and how to help maintain and improve my dental health. Every time I go in, they remember who I am, and ask about my life. They remembered my sister's wedding, where I work, congratulated me on my engagement... I am so thankful to my friend who referred me here, and the staff who has made this a positive experience. Since I started my care here, two of my friends have been and they love it just as much. I went to this clinic for the first time today and I have to say that it was probably the best dental experience of my life! The office decor is inviting and the atmosphere is calm. I was greeted warmly by the ladies at the front desk and by everyone else in that office! Everything was thoroughly explained including treatment options and costs. The xrays were truly the gentlest ever, as was my cleaning. And as an added bonus, the dentist was the cutest!!!I had come from a really horrible dental clinic and this was the polar opposite. My husband and I have been going to see Dr. Lindsay for 3 years and are very happy with the service we have received. We have both had bad gum disease and bone loss and Dr. Lindsay has created a plan of action that has changed our dental habits and given us back our smiles. We've used Dr. Lindsay and his staff for over 20 years now. We've always found them to be very thorough and knowledgeable and using the latest in technology in their office and procedures. The staff explains things thoroughly and always advocates a preventive approach emphasizing consistent, routine care and cleaning anf checkups to avoid problems. You get an estimate of any costs and various options before proceeding with any work. I've seen some of the negative reviews and they all seem to come from folks who may not have seen a dentist in a long time. I think this makes for a difficult situation for both patient and dentist. There isn't a personal relationship so skepticism is high especially if you don;t like what you hear. And, many people have little or no dental insurance so the costs of care can be significant. Dr. Lindsay IS conservative in his approach in that he recommends early intervention rather than waiting for any problem to get bigger. But, the patient always has the choice. Small areas of decay can be difficult to spot and offices with older equipment/techniques may not spot what another office can. And, x-ray interpretations can vary. Ask anyone who routinely works with x-rays. I have never felt like Balcones Dental was trying to push a procedure just to make a buck. They have plenty of patients they are taking care of! That said, they know me and my family, our medical history, and who we are. And, as someone who has experienced the excruciating pain of an abscessed tooth which a medical doctor misdiagnosed as a sinus infection, I can tell you that I totally believe in an ounce of prevention. Waiting to get dental work done until the last minute is a way to increase the odds of needing a root canal or losing a tooth - both way more expensive than getting an early filling. I have recommended Balcones Dental to plenty of friends and will continue to do so in the future. read more

My husband and I both saw Dr. Lindsay several years ago. At first I was very impressed with Dr. Lindsay and his staff. The doctor always seemed caring and concerned, but it has been several years now and 2 of the root canals he did on me have failed--one of them had to be extracted, which now means I'm facing a very expensive implant. The one next to it will most likely need to be extracted soon. Very disappointing. Then there is the issue of my husband's visit with the woman who did his deep cleaning there (can't remember her name). She blew off a very expensive piece of cosmetic work from his front two teeth and didn't even acknowledge it. Because my husband was under light sedation at the time, he didn't realize it until after we got home. He is now facing a VERY expensive procedure to have that cosmetic apparatus put back in. Not only that, but he is ashamed to show his teeth when he smiles because they look absolutely terrible without that missing apparatus! The woman performing the cleaning didn't even tell him what she had done!! You don't mess up someone's previous dental work during a cleaning and not fess up to what happened. When I called the office to tell them what happened, they said that it must have been loose to begin with. It wasn't loose, and the woman performing the cleaning should have been more careful and definitely should have been honest with us about what she had done. We were very, very disappointed with what seemed at first like a top notch facility and top notch doctor. Now two failed root canals, an extraction, and a missing (very expensive) cosmetic apparatus that was previously affixed to my husband's teeth that we weren't even told came off during his cleaning, we are very, very disappointed. read more

I had such a fear of Dentists that I hadn't been in 13 years. I was so scared to go because of the pain, and the results of my years of neglect, not to mention the cost. They explain everything and the costs. I will confess that I cried a bit but only because of the fear. They made me so comfortable, that I now look forward to going and staying on a dental regimen. Aggressively over treated. Spent thousands in dental care and have been treated poorly over the phone by office staff. My implant crown failed after only 2 years and they are charging over $100 to glue it back in. They recommended a root canal on one tooth. I finally decided to get a second opinion after thousands in treatment with Dr Lindsay. My new dentist did a nerve test, determined my nerve was healthy and was able to do a filling on the tooth where balconies dental wanted to do a root canal. Do not trust this practice. The in house surgery center should have tipped me off. read more

I wouldn't recommend at all Balcones. The dental office is not there to look out for your best interest they do want to drain your insurance company and do not give you an accurate quote of what you will be paying out of pocket. You are left instead dealing with your insurance company and the dental office telling both telling you different stories and your insurance company giving you a dollar amount but the office telling you 3x more than the amount. To avoid any other person of having to deal with this just find another practice. read more

I first went to Balcones Dental without having an insurance plan. I was looking to replace an excellent dentist from my prior home out of state. I found him. Dr. Lindsay and the entire staff at Balcones Dental have provided great service and treatments. While root canals are never going to make my top ten list of things to do, mine at Balcones was the most pleasant of the four I have had. My search is over! I went here for a check up on a friends suggestion. I had been seeing another dentist for five years but switched due to an insurance change where we both work. The dentist found three cavities my other dentist never told me about. I did not believe him for obvious reasons. I was convinced he was trying to get my money. However, one weekend a couple of months later I woke up with a terrible toothache. I could not reach my old dentist so called the new one who answered! They called in medicine and saw me first thing Monday. Sure enough, I DID have a cavity and it was huge on my xray. I got a root canal and felt much better the next day. Dr. Lindsay explained that cavities don't hurt until they are deep to your nerve. Needless to say, I believe him now. I recommend them to whomever is reading this. read more

I went to this office out of convenience as I lived nearby. I have worked in the healthcare industry for over twenty years and I have never been treated as unprofessionally and rudely as I was at Balcones Dental in Austin, Texas. I saw the dentist over a year ago after not having dental care for a long time, but not having any emergent needs either. Dr Lindsey seemed to be a gentle, caring man. But he has a very harsh and mean office manager named Karen. She has a very strong personality and is a bully. When I first sat down with her to discuss a long term treatment plan, she repeatedly criticized my husbands insurance coverage as inadequate. Hardly a vote of confidence, I should have found another dentist that day, but Dr Lindsey was kind and I thought it would work out fine. About three months ago I cracked one of my molars that had an old filling in it from childhood. I called the office and they scheduled me to come in. I was told I would need a root canal. The office manger told me about Care credit and told me over and over to request $10,000 for the credit amount! I was able to get a much smaller line of credit and went in for my root canal. The root canal was performed and I went home. Two weeks later I called and told them my tooth still felt sensitve. I went in and Dr Lindsey explained that sometimes there is a fourth root involved and suggested I see an endodontist. I went to the front desk and they were very UNhelpful. I was able to convince them to call and refer me, but when I asked the office manager if they accept Care Credit there, she rudely told me that was something I would have to find out on my own. I told her it would be helpful if she could call over and ask, and she sighed very loudly then made the call. I asked her at this time for an itemized statement of services, which she did not give me. But it was her attitude that was concerning. She obviously appeared very bothered that I would make such a request! I went to the endodontist and he fixed the botched root canal. I called later that week and an appointment was made to get a temporary crown. She told me that I would be credited for the initial root canal and that I would only to need to pay for the crown. Since I paid out of pocket almost $600 initially, then put on Care Credit almost $2000, I again asked for an itemized statement just so I could keep track of things, again I did not receive this and was treated harshly for even asking such a question! The office manager was very defensive and talked down to me as if I were accusing her of something. I found this very strange. The temporary crown was placed on and a permanent crown was ordered. Two weeks went by and I got the call that the crown was in and when could I come in? I answered as soon as possible and was told the first available appointment would be in two and a half weeks! I replied that this was not possible and other arrangements would need to be made. I was called back that afternoon and scheduled to come in the next day. I went in the next day as scheduled and asked the receptionist again for an itemized statement when I leave today. He asked me what I had received prior and I answered nothing. I have never understood this to be a strange request? Usually, one is sent through the mail. As I sat in the lobby I heard the office manager speaking in a loud voice that here is the statement and that I had "nothing left" on my insurance policy. I had never even needed to know what was "left". The statement was requested for my own personal records. She made a huge deal out me asking for my bill! It was very embarrassing, and she didn't even speak to me directly, instead speaking in a harsh, loud tone about me as if I were such a bother to her! I was called back to the treatment area. I was told on the appointment before, that I had a cavity next to the tooth that would be crowned and that it would be best if I had it filled prior to having the permanent crown placed. I asked about this when I was in the chair but did not receive an answer. When the crown was placed on Dr Lindsey left the room without any post care instructuions about how to care for the crown . Instead the Bully office Mgr Karen came to me, handed me the folded statement and told me to "find another dentisit office". When I asked why, she said because of the rude remarks to the staff that I had made! I don't even know what the lady was talking about? I have never remarked to the staff about anything, except chit chat! There was never even an apology for the botched root canal or any inconvenience that I had undergone. I have never heard of a root canal treatment taking almost three months! The sad thing is that Dr Lindsey seems to be a sincerely decent man and that he allows this bully office manager to humilitate and speak cruelly to patients. This is exactly the sort of experience that scares people of going to the dentist! read more

This place is great and so convenient. Everyone there has been so super nice and friendly I feel like hanging out there! I'm very picky about dentists from some prior bad experiences but Dr. Cantu is great. And they do everything there. (No trips across town for root canals.) The facilities are nice and they even have their own dental plan. read more
