I had read that the lumber supply here competes with big box. That is most vertically not true. For one thing, they only carry pine. For another they stock limited dimensions, don't have 2x2 for example. Also guy said they didn't have prime. The rest of the store looked pretty dumpy like about to go out of business. Suggest going to whitmore ace in downers which is much nicer thought they also don't have much for lumber. Rest of store is really nice though and well stocked. read more

I called to return one at 7:55pm I said "Hey I was just there I just wanted to return something I bought super quick I'll be there in 2 minutes" the girl cashier responded "we won't be able to do that" I told her "I'm 2 minutes away I'll get there right before I won't be any bother" and she responded "yeah but we close at 8 so that's not possible" in the rudest tone and sass, I was not expecting a service so badly. Bales Ace has a pretty good selection of items for being a smaller neighborhood store, but the lumber yard definitely rivals any of the big box stores.There is always someone knowledgeable around to help, and they treat their customers right. I was in need of a drywall saw and couldn't find one. An employee walked me to the correct aisle and showed me the selection. The best/most well put together one was on sale the previous week, and even though the promotion was over they gave me the sale price. You can tell they really know their stuff. When I run into problems on a project, I can just describe the problem and they can offer an easy and cost-effective solution. Best thing, you really can tell they enjoy doing their jobs. All the employees are super friendly. Some things might cost a little more here than other stores, but when you're dealing with friendly and knowledgeable people, you don't mind spending a little more. read more

I had a not-so-great customer experience several years ago. Just a teen cashier who was more interested in texting her friends than helping customers, but it irritated me. I almost wrote a scathing review, but decided to listen to my better angels and let it go. I'm glad I did, because a year ago, I needed something and didn't have time to go to the big box, so I went back to Bales. This store went above and beyond to help me. Since then, I've been back countless times and every time they have been extremely helpful...and accessible! We discovered a leak on our laundry room water valve, and went into Bales Ace to purchase a replacement part. Soooo glad we did! We don't have any plumbing knowledge at all but fortunately we stopped at the back counter to ask the difference for some of the replacement valves they were selling. One of the staff, Sally, was so very helpful! She explained the different types of valves (we had originally selected the wrong type), and then advised us that we might not even have to replace the unit. She described what the problem might be, and we went home with two options to try. Her advice ended up working without need for the replacement part at all. They may not have made a sale for the replacement valve, but that kind of knowledge and customer service is what makes us going to Bales Ace Hardware first, before other stores! read more

Bales is our destination an average of twice a week between business and personal needs. They have exactly what we need and the personnel are knowledgeable and helpful. We really appreciate the ability to park a few feet away, find what we need in a couple of minutes and then check out quickly. Time is money and the economics make sense to us. read more

Very nicely stocked, especially considering the smaller size, but the real value is in the helpful staff. They always have excellent suggestions for ways to solve your problems; I've had some odd little issues crop up in our place, and they've been invaluable. I even laughed a little when one employee warned me about how hard it is to match cream paint colors, but then took my large swatch, eyeballed it, did a quick mix, painted on the swatch, and matched it the first try! read more

I've usually had very good service here, and Stan is very knowledgeable and polite. Unfortunately, I took my doors to be re-screened and had a terrible experience with one of the other long-time employees. I dropped the doors off on Friday at 3:00 and was promised I was "first in line" and it would be completed "first thing tomorrow'. I was surprised that it would be $80 to re-screen two regular sized screen doors, but agreed anyway. After not receiving a call by 2:00 on Saturday, I stopped in and asked for an update. I was told by the same employee that the doors wouldn't be done until at least Tuesday. When I said that he promised me it would be done "first thing," he accused me of lying and became belligerent. I took the screens back and got a refund. I've always gone to Bales Ace Hardware knowing they are much more expensive than Home Depot or Menards, but did so anyway because it's locally owned and usually offered good service. After this experience, I'm not going back. read more

These guys are the best! I needed a huge mirror cut to a certain dimension. They went out of their way to accommodate me. They helped me unload the massive mirror, cut it, and helped put it back in my vehicle. Samantha in particular was very helpful and was not afraid to give it a shot. When all said and done.
