I have been gardening since my Grandfather started teaching me as far young as 5 or 6. I am currently 63 and have had gardens in many states in the US for many years. One day I searched... "vegetables dupagecounty" The first hit was Hacker's Glenbard Gardens. My Wife and I hit the Jackpot!!!!!!!! We had been getting our plants from places like Menards and Home Depot.....Not anymore! LOL My Wife and I are now going to get our vegetables and flowers from Hacker's for as long as we can. I bet Hacker's has more varieties than anywhere in the midwest. 72 Different varieties of Just Tomatoes alone !! Absolutely Incredible variety of flowers, vegetables, and practically everything you can think of plus specials! We also buy plants for our neighbors gardens. Way better prices than the big stores. Beautiful! This is my second trip in two days!! I never knew this super cool garden center and nursery was here!! I stopped in yesterday, just out of curiosity, and left with 3 bags of black mulch, 1 giant bag of amazing potting soil, and about 12 different herb and unique vegetable seedlings! Ron was so friendly and Dan helped me load up my car. Another staffer answered my questions about annuals versus perennials. I had a blast planting everything last night in my yard after work!! Then today, I went back on my lunch hour for more!! Dan helped me at check-out and Ben helped me load up my car with even more mulch and potting soil! It's great quality!! So rich. Better than the stuff I've bought at the hardware store. Also, I picked up 8 packets of seeds! I'm going to grow a bunch of cool squash and pumpkins!!! They had a huge variety of flower and vegetables seeds left, which is great since I'm really late getting my garden going this summer. Also, milkweed seeds, which I find are hard to locate!! They had like 5 packs of them!! I can't wait for everything to bloom!! I love that this shop is family owned. It's really one-of-a-kind. I'm definitely going back. Okay... Well I am upping my rating to 5 stars! Why? Because I think great customer service is that important and this establishment has it in spades 2nd visit... And Brian (owner) took the time to walk me around to show me all the different late blooming perrinials. As a novice gardener, that was much appreciated. I also realized during this trip that they had a bigger selection of flowers than I originally thought. He also replaced a flower that I had previously purchased from them that died. Brian gave me a box to carry my flowers in and offered to help me carry my purchases to my car. I read some reviews about paying a lot more here... I didn't think their prices were too bad. This place is the best, nice ppl and the quality of veggies is very good. Years ago I planted a variety of tomatoes from a variety of stores and Hacker's grew almost twice as big and more plentiful. Was looking for a poinsettia today and thought of Hacker's Glenbard Gardens in Lombard. Amazing! The most beautiful plants you have ever seen in red, white, pink and combinations. Just standing in the green house gave me "Christmasbumps." Prices are so reasonable, service is terrific. For a small fee, they will deliver in the area. You deserve a beautiful plant and so does your mom, your grandma and that nice lady down the street, and I think you should stop by Hacker's for sure! read more

I had been looking for some string beans and my usual haunts were sold out. These folks had 2 varieties of beans available and were friendly on the phone. I headed out to Lombard from the Woodfield Mall area. While it was mid June and past the season for planting they had some great choices beside the beans. I also picked up some Proven Winner annuals. Everyone at the nursery was helpful and courteous. All all of the 16 plants I purchased from them are thriving. Thank you! read more

Visited this place for the first time in 2021 and I loved it! I live about 25 miles away and have a local greenhouse in my area I like to support, but I will definitely be coming back here to get items that I cannot get elsewhere. The selection here is amazing, especially the heirloom tomatoes!! I also love that it is like going back to one of those greenhouses from my childhood. Family-run business, not some big box store with a bunch of teens who don't know anything. These people have obviously been doing this for decades and their selections shows they know what real gardeners are looking for. Highly recommend them. I've gone to Hacker's for over 20 years. I really like giving my business to local nurseries who seem to care about healthy plants, so my last visit last week has left me angry. It seems they care about healthy plants but not about the health of their customers. Not one person who worked at the nursery inside or out wore a mask. The vast majority of customers were still wearing masks yet it was not reciprocated by the personnel who work at the nursery. After that encounter I will take some time out from visiting their store, in fact I already made a trip to the Growing Place in Naperville. They also have healthy plants and every single person working there had a mask on, outside! Sad that I live in Lombard and I need to now give my business to Naperville since they apparently carE more about their customers health. read more

Despite those narrow aisles, I am upping my rating. Hacker's has given me years of consistent quality and lovingly raised plants. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable, somehow miraculously understanding exactly what I am trying to describe based on my lame descriptions of "it's about so high and uh, I think it flowers pink". Great selection of veggies - better than any other nursery around. I needed Chiltepin and Tabasco peppers this year. Could I be any pickier? And yes, they carried them. Hacker's has two things going for them: 1) they have excellent plant inventory and 2) they are a local business. Unlike the big box stores, Hacker's really takes care of their products. You can tell their plants have never been stressed out because they were under watered or exposed to early frost. Their stock is also pretty varied though can be limited in quantity and you can find some fun tropicals there to spice up the ubiquitous impatiens and hostas! I have also found their staff to be very helpful and can give you great tips about how to grow each variety...can't get that at HomeDepot or Walmart! We are avid gardeners and have won awards for our gardens. We trust Hackers. read more

Very well run nursery and friendly knowledgeable staff. More varieties of tomatoes, esp Heirloom, than I've ever seen. As mentioned in other reviews, the indoor greenhouse has really narrow aisles and it can get tricky with flower carts and people. Best bet is to go when it first opens on the weekend, or mid-morning/mid-afternoon on weekdays. and leave cart at the end of the aisles if possible. You'll thank me later . ;-) SHOP LOCAL! read more

My husband and I decided to plant a vegetable garden this year, and happened to pass by Hacker's on our way home and saw a large "vegetable plants" sign. So we figured we'd check out their selection. They had a huge variety of vegetables/herbs. We bought lettuce, chives, tomatoes, peppers, cucumber, zucchini, green beans, basil and cilantro. But there was so much more. We would have bought up everything if we had the space! The staff was very friendly and helpful and answered any questions we had. Since we are pretty amateur gardeners, we really needed some guidance. And Hacker's offered it. Although we weren't there for any floral plants, we did notice the high quality of the flower selection. The hanging baskets were HUGE! We'll definitely be coming back to get some of those beautiful beasts :) read more

This is a family-owned greenhouse with so much to choose from! I've been out for numerous visits throughout the year, and they always have a nice selection of seasonal plants and flowers, as well as supplies for gardening. During the busy season, just about every inch of the place is crammed with beautiful flowers and plants. They always look so much healthier than what you might find at a Home Depot or Menard's, too. Inventory here ranges from the typical annual/perennials, potted arrangements, fruit and veggie plants, cacti, fertilizers and potting/planting supplies, and bulbs in fall. The staff is INCREDIBLY knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. I have never once had a question that stumped them - and generally they will offer even more helpful hints and pointers once they've answered your initial question. They clearly all love what they do and speak with passion about their plants. They offer trolleys and boxes to help you select and carry your plants, but as other reviewers have noted, the aisles in the greenhouse are much too narrow to navigate down with a trolley. So you will need to carry your selections out to the trolley if you're purchasing a lot. Or, you can fill up boxes one at a time and leave them at the counter while you shop. I've bumped my review down to 4 rather than 5 stars simply because of the prices here. Since you're shopping local, you need to be prepared to pay more for it. They are small and can't support the rock bottom prices that the big box stores have on their plants. Therefore, you might be paying a bit more for small plants, all the way up to a LOT more for larger perennials. Prices do fluctuate a bit seasonally, but they will be higher than other big box nurseries. read more

After we parked the car, put our masks and gloves on, grab a cart & come in they tell us were closed. I've been a customer at Hacker's for about 30 years. They have the best selection of spring pansies, annuals and vegetables that I've ever seen. Their greenhouse is amazing. Beautiful perennial and annual flowers. Tomatoes - tons to choose from, especially heirloom. Wonderful herbs and vegetables. French Vanilla Marigolds, perennials and a wide range of roses that are competitively priced given their size and source. I've found a nice selection of hostas here but they're pricey compared to other places. I returned a few plants the other day and wow...they were pretty gumpy about it and I had my receipt! Fabulous selection of tomatoes, esp. the super-sweet "sunsugar" tiny yellow cherry tomato plant. We love the "chocolate" purple cherry tomato variety that one cannot find anywhere else. Beautiful place to visit - it's a joy to see flowers & vegetables in such a good condition. Would like them to offer more selection of Iris bulbs, and selection of peonies besides their already huge selection of hardy roses. read more

The wife and I happened to stumble upon Hackers a couple of years ago. We had just gotten out house and were ready to start re-doing all the plants. The selection here blew us away. Being first time home owners, we asked the people at Hackers for a little guidance. They happily gave us advice on what, and when to plant. We've went back every season since. Their selection is amazing, and changes as the seasons do. The people who work here are very knowledgeable, and willing to share their experience. No matter if you want vegetables, herbs, or flowers, this place has them. they also have a selection of fertilizer, soil, and,well, plant related accessories. Their prices are right in line with a lot of "big box" store, if not maybe a touch higher. But the quality and variety is where they shine. You need 15 different kinds of tomatoes? They have them. Want to plant a garden of nothing but hot peppers? You can have a rainbow of peppers with their selection. Even eggplants, I believe they have at least 6 I can recall off the top of my head.
