I've visited this place four different times, and every single time I've been impressed by the variety of inventory. It's honestly a hidden gem. I love walking through the store and discovering all the unique items they carry, you can get lost in the sauce for sure. That said, the experience with the staff has consistently been disappointing. Across all four visits, the employees have ranged from cold to outright unfriendly and rude. We usually visit with our kids, and it often feels like our mere presence is an inconvenience. Asking for help or advice seems to irritate them even more, which makes the shopping experience unnecessarily uncomfortable. My wife and I have been debating going back now that spring is here because the inventory truly is fantastic, but we're honestly bracing ourselves for the same salty attitudes we've come to expect. Pricing is also a bit above market value, leaning toward overpriced, though that's becoming more common everywhere these days. read more

First off, I am not one to leave a negative review, so I will focus on the positives. My partner was immediately helped by a gentleman and guided to what she was looking for. Of which, there was plenty of variety. I was impressed with the variety of items available for my selections as well, but they saved me a lot of time, trouble and money, in that they won't be selling me anything. Things to improve: Greet your customers warmly when they come in whether you despise them or not. Being rude and curt is a clear sign you are not interested in maintaining customers. read more

Great flowers and staff that knows what they're doing. During the week is best other the staff can be very busy.

On the positive side, this place has nice pre-planted, potted arrangements to take and go for patio decor in the spring and summer. They come at a fairly premium price. Annuals are good quality, perennials are fairly good quality, never have found them to be water neglected. The check out staff are more than happy to sell those big pots and a small brood of annuals you might choose. On the negative side, as a fairly avid gardener who is always looking to expand my perennial garden, I now limit my trips here to last resort. The check out staff are particularly toxic and passive aggressive. You will see this deep in some other reviews. Do not ask them guidance on the perennials or anything beyond the nearby annuals and pots. If staff are in a particularly bad mood that day, you will get snapped at or a mumbled response. When you do make your own selections of perennials and brace yourself for check out with your full cart, plan on having a flower stalk broken as they ring you up or have them not offer to place the selections in boxes so as to not dirty your car. They WILL offer sage wisdom on each perennial at checkout, however. Funny thing is that 100% of the time, this advice has never materialized. read more

I am a horticulturist and landscape designer and for 30yrs Vern Goers is the only place I buy my annuals for the best selection and quality for a fair price. Also a good selection of many perennials, succulents that are hard to find as well containers displays for indoors and out. This friendly family owned greenhouse has family members with long time staff designers and horticulturist to help with any questions asked. I highly recommend. read more

I've been packing my planters with Vern's blooms for a decade so the fact that I haven't reviewed them as a favorite local business is a huge oversight on my part! Love the small drive-up atmosphere. The open tables allow you to walk around, and mix and match plants to "build" your planter combos. They have everything from smaller plants and flowers, a hearty section of herbs, perennials and even small decorative shrubs and bushes. They sell decorative planter urns and boxes as well. Their signature self-assembly low cardboard trays of various sizes make it easy tote your plants home. The call-in curb-side orders this spring lifted my spirits more than imaginable during this bleak time. Not "cheap" but definitely not as expensive as some other local places in Hinsdale/Burr Ridge. I'll be coming back for many planting seasons to come. read more

I drive to them from the north side (which has 2 massive garden stores chalet and lurvey) because I adore the plants, people and knowledge so much. A family business like Vern Goers is only able to continue generation after generation bc of the wonderful people. truly have only had positive experiences with their entire staff. A great place. I deducted one star based on their higher than average pricing but everything else was perfect. The parking lot is gravel and holds nine cars. Many customers parked on the paved residential street. The layout is a bit scattered with plants at multiple stages of growth throughout the grounds. I found some of the most striking varieties and colors were in plants that weren't to full bloom yet so pay attention to the rows and flats of just green growth. They don't have huge numbers of any one plant. I picked up a few geraniums in shades I've not seen elsewhere. This is clearly their specialty. Some fluorescent pink and red will be splashed on my front yard this year. Pricing is a bit high with a small potted geranium or petunia being $5.50. Prices go up from there. The only thing I got that was well priced were the sweet potato vines and some snapdragons. Soil is way over priced and a trip to Home Depot or such will also be needed. read more

Wow. Have shopped there for years. Great local business. Staff has always been helpful and friendly. But not today. Unfortunately for no reason we were treated rudely. Couldn't find a product. Asked someone. Still couldn't locate so walked back and asked again. This time we were escorted 1/2 way, she pointed and said "it's right down there!" When we said we looked 3 times down there she was very annoyed, walked us down. The plant was a different variety and a completely color. Rather than explain it she just basically berated us for not knowing this. Rude, insulting person. Might want to find a new career. read more

Going to Vern Goers is the first signal of Spring for me. This family run greenhouse has been in Hinsdale forever- in fact- it is now so surrounded by giant homes you forget that this area used to be considered "the country" by the city folk. It may be the only bit of "country" still left in Hinsdale. Start your adventure by grabbing one of the wagons up front to load up with your finds, and with the wagon swaying and squeaking behind you, begin to walk the property to see what treasures you can discover. There are acres of greenhouses and you quickly learn that one is for impatiens and one is for geraniums and one is for begonias and so on. . . . They have a pretty good selection of perennials (both shade and sun), annuals and they also carry a full selection of prearranged pots that you can just buy and place at your home. I like wandering behind the greenhouses as you never know what you will find- like a climbing hydrangea or that certain shade plant that you wanted. The people helping you are great- full of knowledge and advice and if they don't know something- they will quickly find someone who does. If you have not been here before- once you have collected your plants to purchase, you check out at one of the tables up front. Just stand patiently and they will hand write up your order and give you plastic sheets to protect your car. They will also help you load your car if help is needed. Goers is not cheap- you can get similar product at less convenient places around. But I like that they are family owned, take part in almost every charity fund raiser that is happening in Hinsdale, and know what they are talking about as it relates to your garden. Ahh- Spring is here and I am looking forward to pulling my dusty wagon through the greenhouses at Goers as I paint my garden's palette with color. Look for me- I 'll be the one with dirt all over my shirt, but a smile on my face as I wander through this gardener's paradise! read more

I have been coming here for 30 years. This is the 3rd year i have used vern goers to fill my window flower boxes. I have always used their recommendations for flowers to use for sunny locations/shady locations and go with their choices. This year the flower boxes are barely hanging on. It is only June and there are little blooms and some are dying. The choice of flowers did not work with window boxes. There are very few vining flowers to cascade over the box, and too many flowers growing upright. I am so disappointed. I paid $600.00 dollars for 6 boxes and I will never use them again. Hands-down best place to purchase summer annuals in the Hinsdale / Willowbrook / Burr Ridge area. This family-owned establishment (now 3rd generation) is the real-deal. My family has purchased annuals from them for decades. Many of their plants (certainly not all, but many) are grown in-house by their master gardener who has been with them since the 1980s. The plants are always in top-notch condition which you will not find at most other places in this area. These people know about plants -- and more importantly will take the time to help you! They are often crazy-busy in May and June, so if you think you will need help best to get there very early as they are opening so they can help you (by mid-day in high season they are typically swamped). Excellent selection of bedding annuals and perennials, and a fantastic selection of veggie plants -- tomatoes, peppers, cukes, eggplants, melons, etc. Also a large selection of smaller flowering shrub-type plants like hydrangea, butterfly bush, etc. This is not a nursery (it is a greenhouse - six or seven of them actually!), so they do not have big trees or large evergreen type shrubs so if you are looking for those you'll have to shop somewhere else. But if you are looking for annuals, perennials, veggies, roses, or flowering shrubs, this is THE place to go! read more

My parents wanted to plant some wildflowers native to the Chicago area near their garden in order to attract more pollinators. I did some online research and narrowed down exactly what they needed regarding amount of sun/shade and moisture of soil. I sent out an email to a couple of nurseries near their home. Vern Goers responded within a few hours providing availability and pricing. We went to their nursery and were able to get exactly what we wanted. The staff was very nice and knowledgeable. My Mom told me that she has been going to Vern Goers for years, but I didn't remember their nursery until I got there to pick up the wildflowers. I instantly remembered as a kid running around the rows of displays while my Mom would be shopping. Anyways, this is a great nursery and I will be sure to keep Vern Goers at the top of my list for future needs. read more

WHY......oh why oh why haven't I paid a visit to this wonderful greenhouse before now?? The selection of flowers and plants here is second to none. The grounds are beautiful. It's tucked back in a residential part of Hinsdale so it's quiet and serene, as well. I strolled along for a good half an hour before grabbing a flat cart to load up with what I had picked out. I found the prices to be very reasonable.The thing that is so wonderful about Vern Goers is their selection of PERENNIALS! They're healthy, well cared for, and just the right size in terms of maturity. I'm sorry to name drop, but when you consider what places like Home Depot have to offer: sad, droopy, half-dead plants that are so pot-bound, you can just tell they are from last year and never sold. The perennials at VG are astounding in comparison! I've had them in my garden for almost 3 weeks now and they look very pretty and happy. I can't wait for a few years to pass when they will have filled in and be gorgeous. Thank you, VG, for giving me the garden I've always wanted! Didn't know about this tucked in a. Sigh or hood garden center, and I had a late start on a small herb garden. They had no chive plants left but I got a pretty REI-colored sage plant and some accent tiny flower plants. Got an adorable tiny succulent holder ceramic elephant that I get lots of compliments on. I'll be back early in planting season next year, might go back for fall mums. I do recommend you give this place a try. read more

I dropped by just a few days ago, wanting to add some native plants to my garden. Things like goldenrod, wild geraniums, yellow coneflowers...which I never seem to find at Home Depot. This being August, my hopes were not high. However, these guys had just about everything I was looking for. Even though I limited myself to only the plants that came in the cheaper 4" pots, I ended up buying 6 times as many as I'd planned to and actually had to cut myself off. In short, this is THE place to go if you are looking for native plants in the vicinity of Hinsdale. What a tiny gem tucked away in a Hinsdale neighborhood! I do not have a green thumb and I get overwhelmed when I think about planting anything. So I knew I needed guidance that I would not receive at a Home Depot. When I asked for help I was directed to Sandy who I was told was "the best." All I can say is WOW! Sandy looked at a photo of where I needed some plants and from there she did all the work! She brought out different plants and flowers and showed us different design options, which was really helpful. My husband and I had our 8 month old and 2 year old in tow so it was difficult for us to give our full attention. But Sandy just did her thing and made the process less overwhelming and more fun! She then schooled us on how to plant our beautiful flowers and care for them. She also provided ideas for winter planting in our new pot and even hauled mulch to our car! Sandy went above and beyond our expectations which is what motivated me to write this review. My only tip is to bring some cash because we felt horrible that we couldn't tip her. She deserved it! We will definitely be going back for our future planting needs!! read more

Today I left Verns, not because I didn't want to buy something (the greenhouse is fantastic and the plants are beautiful) but because of the poor customer service I received. Not one but THREE separate associates disregarded me when I asked for help. I asked each associate, "Excuse me, are you helping someone?". None of them smiled or made eye contact. Each said, "Yes!" and walked past me without making another statement. I don't know about you but all I was looking for was "We are very busy right now, I am helping another customer but someone will be with you as soon as possible. Thank you for waiting!". I am happy to pay a premium for products and support local business but not if I don't feel appreciated. I can easily go down the street and pay a lower price for the same product. I went in right before Father's Day and asked for an easy to care for plant for my 93 year old father in Assisted Living. I explained that he has a south facing window and emphasized that I need something that is plain-old easy to care for. I was given a hibiscus. I went to see Dad a couple weeks later and it is virtually dead with mostly brown leaves and no blooms. I took it back, asking what I can do to revive it and was told that the plant I was sold is an OUTDOOR plant. When I said that I had given instructions that it was to go on a south windowsill the clerk just kept repeating, "It's an outdoor plant. I don't know who would do that. I don't know who would do that. I don't know who would do that." No acknowledgement that they had done the wrong thing in selling this to me, no offer to exchange it, nothing. No taking responsibility for their mismatch in the sale, no offer to stand behind what they had sold. She offered to SELL me something else. Their prices are astronomical too. I went there willing to pay top dollar specifically to get good advice on this particular purchase and got such outlandish advice I would have been better off buying any old plant at Walmart. Will not go back, do not recommend. read more
