While I was on a trip with some of my Bulgarian friends, one of them pulled out a jar with a very familiar label of my most beloved Lutenica and a package of waffers called "Borovetc ". I was overjoyed when they informed me that there is a store in Lynnood that sells a lot of Bulgarian and other Eastern European country products. I searched online for more information on their hours of operation and since I couldnt find any I decided to just drive out there. I got there right when they were opening the store and I walked in the tiny little retail space. Browsing through the many familiar packages I felt excitement. Finally there is a place in town where I can go grab some of my favorite Bulgarian cookies, and we no longer have to rely on smuggled cured meats and jars of home made tasty goodness. I order a large bag of flour to be shipped to Florida, item got damaged it never made it to me, so the great customer service only gave me my money back for item and told me ( to made so sad ) out of $30 shipping because they believe I'm not entitled to all my money back. Balkan Market is a hidden gem. I discovered the wonders of eastern European food through my NY-native girlfriend & her European immigrant family, and I was instantly hooked on almost everything they fed me, but I was ESPECIALLY hooked on Ajvar. If you're not in the know, it's a vegetable spread made out of roasted peppers and eggplant, and it's incredible with & on everything. Ajvar is the best-kept secret of Macedonia. It became my new favourite food after my first taste, so I knew I had to find a place to get it back here in WA. Balkan Market is that place. Their selection of Ajvar is extensive, as well as related preserved pepper products. In addition to Ajvar, their stock of every other imaginable kind of food & snack is far reaching and cleanly laid out. Everything's easy to see, the store is clean and well-lit, and the prices are fair, especially considering they sell primarily imported and specialty items. Make sure you check out their meat selection as well- they have an excellent selection of smoked, cured, and preserved meat products, again, cleanly presented & sold at fair prices. If you're in the area & like eastern european foods, you owe it to yourself to check out a place as authentic as Balkan Market. Found this place on yelp while on a quest to find sour cabbage for sarmale. I was told to find any European deli (my boyfriend is Romanian, and I'm..well not lol), so I went there totally overwhelmed about pulling off this traditional dish. The woman who was there (and I'm assuming is the owner, since she has been the only person there the last two times) was very helpful. I was in and out pretty quickly, but it looked as if they have many tasty items, and espresso in the back. What made me sad is the entire street this market is on was a ghost town--both times I have been there every business has had an empty parking lot, and I have been the only customer in the market. A place like that should be much busier! It's the street one over (parallel) to the left of grocery outlet/bank of America...kind of hidden but my gps got me there just fine. Please please please go support your local small businesses, and check this place out. I'm happy I found this gem. read more

I love this place. My praising of this shop has led a friend and me to employ 'better than a Balkan market' as a synonym for excellent. However, people who do not have a special fondness in their heart for what was once Yugoslavia, would probably not be so enamored. The shop is a nearly exact replica of a prodavnica in Belgrade or Sarajevo (where the proprietor is from), its shelves stocked with smoki (like cheetos, but peanut-flavored and infinitely more delicious), ajvar (the most delicious condiment ever - a savory spread of eggplant, tomatoes, and red peppers) and the disgusting menthol candy that South Slavs love. For me, even better than the chance to buy foods I miss was chatting with the owner and her amusement at my joy in purchasing cockta and plazma keks. My trek to Burien was more than justified by the opportunity to practice my now-atrocious Bosno-Serbo-Croatian. read more

Bulgarian meats and more. The bf's parents usually buy meats from the sister location in Lynwood. We had some friends in town and wanted to surprise them with some homecountry flavors and visited this place. Meat selection was great! We got pork and lamb and our guests were very impressed! There was also Bulgarian chocolate and snacks that my bf went crazy for. Overall a lovely little shop with homeland treasures and we're planning to stop by again soon for more. read more

Oh, Balkan Market, how I love thee. It's like a stroll through my childhood every time I go there. I can't help but get bagfuls of stuff (mostly candy) and spend tons of money. As a Serbian in Seattle, I don't get a lot of chance to eat Serbian food unless I cook it myself. But even then there seems to always be an ingredient missing. And you can find it right here at the Balkan Market. The staff is so friendly and as soon as you start talking to them in Serbian/Bosnian/Croatian, they get even friendlier! I swear by Vegeta - the spice mix and I cook everything with it. If you're from the Balkans you'll know what I mean. If you're not, here are a few recommendations: Ajvar (roasted red pepper spread), Kajmak (milky fatty goodness), Sudzuk (heavenly bosnian sausage), Kesten dessert (chestnut puree candy bar), Suvi Vrat (cured meat that's out of this world) and of course Euro Krem (hazelnut/milk spread). OH and they also carry the Elderflower & Lemon Fanta! It's in a blue bottle and it beats any other flavors. I could write for hours. But I won't. I just have to say: thank you, Balkan Market! If you were born in former Yugoslavia or countries after the break-up you will find this place to have everything you can remember from your childhood as few folks described already. I usually go here to get Cedevita (croatian drink like tang that you mix with water; orange flavor), suho meso (smoked beef), smoki (like cheetos only better), rum plocice (rum chocolate bars), euro-cream (nutella like chocolate/vanila spread), coffee, Nature (msg free Vegeta seasoning) and few other things. They even have chevaps (tasty ground meat sausages). Owner of this place will actually even sell you roasted lamb by the pound, at Burien location I believe. He would even roast a whole lamb for you and cut it into pieces for about $70 handling fee. You bring your own lamb; you can buy frozen one at Lynnwood business Costco. It's amazing that you would even get this kind of service anywhere. This is not really advertised but you could get in touch with the owner and he'll hook you up. Got to love these kind of places :) Also what I find cool about this place is that they are not over-priced like some other similar places are. For example we get 500g of Zlatna Dzezva coffee here for $6.99 and exact same package is $8.50 in an international deli place in Bellevue. This tells me these guys are fair and reasonable and are not looking to take advantage of local consumers. Keep up the good work and thank you. read more

This seems to be the only place that I can find Milka bars, Jaffa cakes and Mikado chocolates. We went a little crazy our first time here--picking up Eurocrem and Napolitanko wafers...but where else would you find it? The gentleman that works here is super friendly--giving me other suggestions and letting me smell the (delicious) home made sausage links that are in the refrigerated containers. I'll definitely be picking those up the next time I BBQ. If you've been looking for sweets and treats that you haven't been able to find elsewhere, this is your last stop in Seattle! read more

My family is from Slovenia and I have been to Cro and Slo several times. We moved to WA about a year ago and it turns out this market has a lot of the goodies that we enjoy while we are over there. Lots of Milka and Kinder products "Happy Hippo". They have frozen Burek that you take home and bake that is actually really really good. Ivar, fefferoni peppers, Fanta Euro style,............ all kinds of good things. the location is really random but worth it. If your in the area you should give it a try. read more

Well, I know nothing about the stuff they sell here, BUT, my wife is Bulgarian and she actually was very happy with the selections and prices. She's a big fan of Lukanka and was happy they sold it here for a decent price. Also, all those Eastern European candies that she likes, and her tomato spread (forget what it's called), she was happy. I used to shop here a lot. But after buying expired candy and having the cashier walk away from the cash drawer and stop mid transaction to finish her conversation. This would happen a lot and not just to me but other customers as well. Just hit up the world market in Tukwila they got most of the same candies. The young guy who works the weekend is pleasant and has great customer service skills. read more
